"git gc" and "git repack" did not close the open packfiles that
they found unneeded before removing them, which didn't work on a
platform incapable of removing an open file. This has been
corrected.

under the "-s" or "-c" mode, it didn't.

"git submodule update" ought to use a single job unless asked, but
by mistake used multiple jobs, which has been fixed.

This adds --date=human, which skips the timezone if it matches the
current time-zone, and doesn't print the whole date if that matches (ie
skip printing year for dates that are "this year", but also skip the
whole date itself if it's in the last few days and we can just say what
weekday it was).
For really recent dates (same day), use the relative date stamp, while
for old dates (year doesn't match), don't bother with time and timezone.
Also add 'auto' date mode, which defaults to human if we're using the
pager. So you can do
git config --add log.date auto
and your "git log" commands will show the human-legible format unless
you're scripting things.
Note that this time format still shows the timezone for recent enough
events (but not so recent that they show up as relative dates). You can
combine it with the "-local" suffix to never show timezones for an even
more simplified view.

While the scripted `git rebase` still has to rely on the
`git-rebase--am.sh` script to implement the glue between the `rebase`
and the `am` commands, we can go a more direct route in the built-in
rebase and avoid using a shell script altogether.
This patch represents a straight-forward port of `git-rebase--am.sh` to
C, along with the glue code to call it directly from within
`builtin/rebase.c`.
This reduces the chances of Git for Windows running into trouble due to
problems with the POSIX emulation layer (known as "MSYS2 runtime",
itself a derivative of the Cygwin runtime): when no shell script is
called, the POSIX emulation layer is avoided altogether.
Note: we pass an empty action to `reset_head()` here when moving back to
the original branch, as no other action is applicable, really. This
parameter is used to initialize `unpack_trees()`' messages.

Create a test variable GIT_TEST_PACK_SPARSE to enable the sparse
object walk algorithm by default during the test suite. Enabling
this variable ensures coverage in many interesting cases, such as
shallow clones, partial clones, and missing objects.

The '--sparse' flag in 'git pack-objects' changes the algorithm
used to enumerate objects to one that is faster for individual
users pushing new objects that change only a small cone of the
working directory. The sparse algorithm is not recommended for a
server, which likely sends new objects that appear across the
entire working directory.
Create a 'pack.useSparse' setting that enables this new algorithm.
This allows 'git push' to use this algorithm without passing a
'--sparse' flag all the way through four levels of run_command()
calls.
If the '--no-sparse' flag is set, then this config setting is
overridden.

When creating a pack-file using 'git pack-objects --revs' we provide
a list of interesting and uninteresting commits. For example, a push
operation would make the local topic branch be interesting and the
known remote refs as uninteresting. We want to discover the set of
new objects to send to the server as a thin pack.
We walk these commits until we discover a frontier of commits such
that every commit walk starting at interesting commits ends in a root
commit or unintersting commit. We then need to discover which
non-commit objects are reachable from uninteresting commits. This
commit walk is not changing during this series.
The mark_edges_uninteresting() method in list-objects.c iterates on
the commit list and does the following:
* If the commit is UNINTERSTING, then mark its root tree and every
object it can reach as UNINTERESTING.
* If the commit is interesting, then mark the root tree of every
UNINTERSTING parent (and all objects that tree can reach) as
UNINTERSTING.
At the very end, we repeat the process on every commit directly
given to the revision walk from stdin. This helps ensure we properly
cover shallow commits that otherwise were not included in the
frontier.
The logic to recursively follow trees is in the
mark_tree_uninteresting() method in revision.c. The algorithm avoids
duplicate work by not recursing into trees that are already marked
UNINTERSTING.
Add a new 'sparse' option to the mark_edges_uninteresting() method
that performs this logic in a slightly different way. As we iterate
over the commits, we add all of the root trees to an oidset. Then,
call mark_trees_uninteresting_sparse() on that oidset. Note that we
include interesting trees in this process. The current implementation
of mark_trees_unintersting_sparse() will walk the same trees as
the old logic, but this will be replaced in a later change.
Add a '--sparse' flag in 'git pack-objects' to call this new logic.
Add a new test script t/t5322-pack-objects-sparse.sh that tests this
option. The tests currently demonstrate that the resulting object
list is the same as the old algorithm. This includes a case where
both algorithms pack an object that is not needed by a remote due to
limits on the explored set of trees. When the sparse algorithm is
changed in a later commit, we will add a test that demonstrates a
change of behavior in some cases.

Commit 9472935d81 (add: introduce "--renormalize", 2017-11-16) taught
git-add to pass HASH_RENORMALIZE to add_to_index(), which then passes
the flag along to index_path(). However, the flags taken by
add_to_index() and the ones taken by index_path() are distinct
namespaces. We cannot take HASH_* flags in add_to_index(), because they
overlap with the ADD_CACHE_* flags we already take (in this case,
HASH_RENORMALIZE conflicts with ADD_CACHE_IGNORE_ERRORS).
We can solve this by adding a new ADD_CACHE_RENORMALIZE flag, and using
it to set HASH_RENORMALIZE within add_to_index(). In order to make it
clear that these two flags come from distinct sets, let's also change
the name "newflags" in the function to "hash_flags".

When communicating with a remote server or a subprocess, use
expanded numbers rather than numbers with scaling suffix in the
object filter spec (e.g. "limit:blob=1k" becomes
"limit:blob=1024").
Update the protocol docs to note that clients should always perform this
expansion, to allow for more compatibility between server
implementations.

If there is already a .git/ADD_EDIT.patch file, we fail to truncate it
properly, which could result in very funny errors.
Of course, this file should not be left lying around. But at least in
one case, there was a stale copy, larger than the current diff. So the
result was a corrupt diff.
Let's just truncate the file when we write it and not worry about it too
much.

When parsing a tree, we read the object ID directly out of the tree
buffer. This is normally fine, but such an object ID cannot be used with
oidcpy, which copies GIT_MAX_RAWSZ bytes, because if we are using SHA-1,
there may not be that many bytes to copy.
Instead, store the object ID in a separate struct member. Since we can
no longer efficiently compute the path length, store that information as
well in struct name_entry. Ensure we only copy the object ID into the
new buffer if the path length is nonzero, as some callers will pass us
an empty path with no object ID following it, and we will not want to
read past the end of the buffer.

"git checkout [<tree-ish>] path..." learned to report the number of
paths that have been checked out of the index or the tree-ish,
which gives it the same degree of noisy-ness as the case in which
the command checks out a branch.

This kills the_index dependency in get_oid_with_context() but for

point and limit the use of get_oid() in builtin/ instead of forcing
all get_oid() call sites to carry struct repository.

assumes $GIT_DIR/index. Move all call sites to repo_read_index()

This command is probably the first one that operates on a repository
other than the_repository, in f9ee2fcdfa (grep: recurse in-process
using 'struct repository' - 2017-08-02). An explicit 'struct
repository *' was added in that commit to pass around the repository
that we're supposed to grep from.
Since 38bbc2ea39 (grep.c: remove implicit dependency on the_index -
2018-09-21). 'struct grep_opt *' carries in itself a repository
parameter for grepping. We should now be able to reuse grep_opt to
hold the submodule repo instead of a separate argument, which is just
room for mistakes.
While at there, use the right reference instead of the_repository and
the_index in this code. I was a bit careless in my attempt to kick
the_repository / the_index out of library code. It's normally safe to
just stick the_repository / the_index in bultin/ code, but it's not
the case for grep.

If $GITHEAD_1234abcd is set in the environment, we use its value as a
"better branch name" in generating conflict markers. However, we pick
these better names early in the process, and the return value from
getenv() is not guaranteed to stay valid.
Let's make a copy of the returned string. And to make memory management
easier, let's just always return an allocated string from
better_branch_name(), so we know that it must always be freed.

We pass the result of getenv("GIT_DIR") to init_db() and assume that the
string remains valid. But that's not guaranteed across calls to setenv()
or even getenv(), although it often works in practice. Let's make a copy
of the string so that we follow the rules.
Note that we need to mark it with UNLEAK(), since the value persists
until the end of program (but we have no opportunity to free it).
This patch also handles $GIT_WORK_TREE the same way. It actually doesn't
have as long a lifetime and is probably fine, but it's simpler to just
treat the two side-by-side variables the same.

cmd_config() points our source filename pointer at the return value of
getenv(), but that value may be invalidated by further calls to
environment functions. Let's copy it to make sure it remains valid.
We don't need to bother freeing it, as it remains part of the
whole-process global state until we exit.

We save the result of $GIT_INDEX_FILE so that we can restore it after
setting it to a new value and running add--interactive. However, the
pointer returned by getenv() is not guaranteed to be valid after calling
setenv(). This _usually_ works fine, but can fail if libc needs to
reallocate the environment block during the setenv().
Let's just duplicate the string, so we know that it remains valid.
In the long run it may be more robust to teach interactive_add() to take
a set of environment variables to pass along to run-command when it
execs add--interactive. And then we would not have to do this
save/restore dance at all. But this is an easy fix in the meantime.

where the %S at the end is a new placeholder that prints out the ref
(tag/branch) for each commit.
Using %d might seem like an alternative but it only shows the ref for the last
commit in the branch.

On Windows, files cannot be removed nor renamed if there are still
handles held by a process. To remedy that, we introduced the
close_all_packs() function.
Earlier, we made sure that the packs are released just before `git gc`
is spawned, in case that gc wants to remove no-longer needed packs.
But this developer forgot that gc itself also needs to let go of packs,
e.g. when consolidating all packs via the --aggressive option.
Likewise, `git repack -d` wants to delete obsolete packs and therefore
needs to close all pack handles, too.

When the scaffolding for protocol version 2 was initially added in
8f6982b4e1 ("protocol: introduce enum protocol_version value
protocol_v2", 2018-03-14). As seen in:
git log -p -G'support for protocol v2 not implemented yet' --full-diff --reverse v2.17.0..v2.20.0
Many of those scaffolding "die" placeholders were removed, but we
hadn't gotten around to fetch-pack yet.
The test here for "fetch refs from cmdline" is very minimal. There's
much better coverage when running the entire test suite under the WIP
GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION=2 mode[1], we should ideally have better
coverage without needing to invoke a special test mode.

As part of an ongoing effort to make rebase have more uniform behavior,
modify the merge backend to behave like the interactive one, by
re-implementing it on top of the latter.
Interactive rebases are implemented in terms of cherry-pick rather than
the merge-recursive builtin, but cherry-pick also calls into the
recursive merge machinery by default and can accept special merge
strategies and/or special strategy options. As such, there really is
not any need for having both git-rebase--merge and
git-rebase--interactive anymore. Delete git-rebase--merge.sh and
instead implement it in builtin/rebase.c.
This results in a few deliberate but small user-visible changes:
* The progress output is modified (see t3406 and t3420 for examples)
* A few known test failures are now fixed (see t3421)
* bash-prompt during a rebase --merge is now REBASE-i instead of
REBASE-m. Reason: The prompt is a reflection of the backend in use;
this allows users to report an issue to the git mailing list with
the appropriate backend information, and allows advanced users to
know where to search for relevant control files. (see t9903)
testcase modification notes:
t3406: --interactive and --merge had slightly different progress output
while running; adjust a test to match the new expectation
t3420: these test precise output while running, but rebase--am,
rebase--merge, and rebase--interactive all were built on very
different commands (am, merge-recursive, cherry-pick), so the
tests expected different output for each type. Now we expect
--merge and --interactive to have the same output.
t3421: --interactive fixes some bugs in --merge! Wahoo!
t9903: --merge uses the interactive backend so the prompt expected is
now REBASE-i.

Uninitialized submodules have nothing valueable for us to be worried
about. They are just SHA-1. Let "worktree remove" and "worktree move"
continue in this case so that people can still use multiple worktrees
on repos with optional submodules that are never populated, like
sha1collisiondetection in git.git when checked out by doc-diff script.
Note that for "worktree remove", it is possible that a user
initializes a submodule (*), makes some commits (but not push), then
deinitializes it. At that point, the submodule is unpopulated, but the
precious new commits are still in
$GIT_COMMON_DIR/worktrees/<worktree>/modules/<submodule>
directory and we should not allow removing the worktree or we lose
those commits forever. The new directory check is added to prevent
this.
(*) yes they are screwed anyway by doing this since "git submodule"
would add submodule.* in $GIT_COMMON_DIR/config, which is shared
across multiple worktrees. But it does not mean we let them be
screwed even more.

In the Git pack protocol definition, an error packet may appear only in
a certain context. However, servers can face a runtime error (e.g. I/O
error) at an arbitrary timing. This patch changes the protocol to allow
an error packet to be sent instead of any packet.
Without this protocol spec change, when a server cannot process a
request, there's no way to tell that to a client. Since the server
cannot produce a valid response, it would be forced to cut a connection
without telling why. With this protocol spec change, the server can be
more gentle in this situation. An old client may see these error packets
as an unexpected packet, but this is not worse than having an unexpected
EOF.
Following this protocol spec change, the error packet handling code is
moved to pkt-line.c. Implementation wise, this implementation uses
pkt-line to communicate with a subprocess. Since this is not a part of
Git protocol, it's possible that a packet that is not supposed to be an
error packet is mistakenly parsed as an error packet. This error packet
handling is enabled only for the Git pack protocol parsing code
considering this.

Reimplement the `bisect_start` shell function partially in C and add
`bisect-start` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from
git-bisect.sh .
The last part is not converted because it calls another shell function.
`bisect_start` shell function will be completed after the `bisect_next`
shell function is ported in C.
Using `--bisect-start` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell
function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand will be retired and will be called by some
other methods.
Also introduce a method `bisect_append_log_quoted` to keep things short
and crisp.
Note that we are a bit lax about command-line parsing because the helper
is not supposed to be called by the user directly (but only from the git
bisect script).

Reimplement the `get_terms` and `bisect_terms` shell function in C and
add `bisect-terms` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from
git-bisect.sh .
Using `--bisect-terms` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell
function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will
be called by some other methods.
Also use error() to report "no terms defined" and accordingly change the
test in t6030.
We need to use PARSE_OPT_KEEP_UNKNOWN here to allow for parameters that
look like options (e.g --term-good) but should not be parsed by
cmd_bisect__helper(). This change is safe because all other cmdmodes have
strict argc checks already.

check_and_set_terms() sets and receives two global variables namely
TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD in the shell script. Luckily the file BISECT_TERMS
also contains the value of those variables so its appropriate to evoke the
method get_terms() after calling the subcommand so that it retrieves the
value of TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD from the file BISECT_TERMS. The two
global variables are passed as arguments to the subcommand.

Note: bisect_write() uses two variables namely TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD
from the global shell script thus we need to pass it to the subcommand
using the arguments. We then store them in a struct bisect_terms and
pass the memory address around functions.
Add a log_commit() helper function to write the contents of the commit message
header to a file which will be re-used in future parts of the code as
well.
Also introduce a function free_terms() to free the memory of `struct
bisect_terms` and set_terms() to set the values of members in `struct
bisect_terms`.

While 'quiet' and 'interactive' may sound like antonyms, the interactive
machinery actually has logic that implements several
interactive_rebase=implied cases (--exec, --keep-empty, --rebase-merges)
which won't pop up an editor. The rewrite of interactive rebase in C
added a quiet option, though it only turns stats off. Since we want to
make the interactive machinery also take over for git-rebase--merge, it
should fully implement the --quiet option.
git-rebase--interactive was already somewhat quieter than
git-rebase--merge and git-rebase--am, possibly because cherry-pick has
just traditionally been quieter. As such, we only drop a few
informational messages -- "Rebasing (n/m)" and "Successfully rebased..."
Also, for simplicity, remove the differences in how quiet and verbose
options were recorded. Having one be signalled by the presence of a
"verbose" file in the state_dir, while the other was signalled by the
contents of a "quiet" file was just weirdly inconsistent. (This
inconsistency pre-dated the rewrite into C.) Make them consistent by
having them both key off the presence of the file.

The post-rewrite hook is supposed to be invoked for each rewritten
commit. The fact that a commit was selected and processed by the rebase
operation (even though when we hit an error a user said it had no more
useful changes), suggests we should write an entry for it. In
particular, let's treat it as an empty commit trivially squashed into
its parent.
This brings the rebase--am and rebase--merge backends in sync with the
behavior of the interactive rebase backend.

In commit f57696802c ("rebase: really just passthru the `git am`
options", 2018-11-14), the handling of `git am` options was simplified
dramatically (and an option parsing bug was fixed), but it introduced
a small regression in the error message shown when options only
understood by separate backends were used:
$ git rebase --keep --ignore-whitespace
fatal: cannot combine interactive options (--interactive, --exec,
--rebase-merges, --preserve-merges, --keep-empty, --root + --onto) with
am options (.git/rebase-apply/applying)
$ git rebase --merge --ignore-whitespace
fatal: cannot combine merge options (--merge, --strategy,
--strategy-option) with am options (.git/rebase-apply/applying)
Note that in both cases, the list of "am options" is
".git/rebase-apply/applying", which makes no sense. Since the lists of
backend-specific options is documented pretty thoroughly in the rebase
man page (in the "Incompatible Options" section, with multiple links
throughout the document), and since I expect this list to change over
time, just simplify the error message.

The conversion of the script version of rebase took messages that were
prefixed with "error:" and passed them along to die(), which adds a
"fatal:" prefix, thus resulting in messages of the form:
fatal: error: cannot combine...
which seems redundant. Remove the "error:" prefix from the builtin
version of rebase, and change the prefix from "error:" to "fatal:" in
the legacy script to match.

such that we can eliminate access to 'the_repository'.
Also remove the TODO in release_commit_memory, as commit->util was

v2.11.0-rc3~3^2~1 (stripspace: respect repository config, 2016-11-21)
improved stripspace --strip-comments / --comentlines by teaching them
to read repository config, but it went a little too far: when running
stripspace outside any repository, the result is
$ git stripspace --strip-comments <test-input
fatal: not a git repository (or any parent up to mount point /tmp)
That makes experimenting with the stripspace command unnecessarily
fussy. Fix it by discovering the git directory gently, as intended
all along.

When a submodule is deinit'd, the working tree is gone, so the setting of
core.worktree is bogus. Unset it. As we covered the only other case in
which a submodule loses its working tree in the earlier step
(i.e. switching branches of top-level project to move to a commit that did
not have the submodule), this makes the code always maintain
core.worktree correctly unset when there is no working tree
for a submodule.
This re-introduces 984cd77ddb (submodule deinit: unset core.worktree,
2018-06-18), which was reverted as part of f178c13fda (Revert "Merge
branch 'sb/submodule-core-worktree'", 2018-09-07)
The whole series was reverted as the offending commit e98317508c
(submodule: ensure core.worktree is set after update, 2018-06-18)
was relied on by other commits such as 984cd77ddb.
Keep the offending commit reverted, but its functionality came back via
4d6d6ef1fc (Merge branch 'sb/submodule-update-in-c', 2018-09-17), such
that we can reintroduce 984cd77ddb now.

In a028a1930c (fetching submodules: respect `submodule.fetchJobs`
config option, 2016-02-29), we made sure to keep the default
behavior of fetching at most one submodule at once when not setting
the newly introduced `submodule.fetchJobs` config.
This regressed in 90efe595c5 (builtin/submodule--helper: factor
out submodule updating, 2018-08-03). Fix it.

The compiler reports this because show_gitcomp() never actually
returns a value:
"parse-options.c", line 520: warning: Function has no return
statement : show_gitcomp
We could shut the compiler up. But instead let's not bury exit() too
deep. Do the same as internal -h handling, return a special error code
and handle the exit() in parse_options() (and other
parse_options_step() callers) instead.

It would be cumbersome to type out that option all the time, so let's
offer the convenience of a config setting: rebase.rescheduleFailedExec.
Besides, this opens the door to changing the default in a future version
of Git: it does make some sense to reschedule failed `exec` commands by
default (and if we could go back in time when the `exec` command was
invented, we probably would change that default right from the start).

A common use case for the `--exec` option is to verify that each commit
in a topic branch compiles cleanly, via `git rebase -x make <base>`.
However, when an `exec` in such a rebase fails, it is not re-scheduled,
which in this instance is not particularly helpful.
Let's offer a flag to reschedule failed `exec` commands.

We indent with TABs and sometimes for fine alignment, TABs followed by
spaces, but never all spaces (unless the indentation is less than 8
columns). Indenting with spaces slips through in some places. Fix
them.
Imported code and compat/ are left alone on purpose. The former should
remain as close as upstream as possible. The latter pretty much has
separate maintainers, it's up to them to decide.

Currently when git-fetch is asked to recurse into submodules, it dispatches
a plain "git-fetch -C <submodule-dir>" (with some submodule related options
such as prefix and recusing strategy, but) without any information of the
remote or the tip that should be fetched.
But this default fetch is not sufficient, as a newly fetched commit in
the superproject could point to a commit in the submodule that is not
in the default refspec. This is common in workflows like Gerrit's.
When fetching a Gerrit change under review (from refs/changes/??), the
commits in that change likely point to submodule commits that have not
been merged to a branch yet.
Fetch a submodule object by id if the object that the superproject
points to, cannot be found. For now this object is fetched from the
'origin' remote as we defer getting the default remote to a later patch.
A list of new submodule commits are already generated in certain
conditions (by check_for_new_submodule_commits()); this new feature
invokes that function in more situations.
The submodule checks were done only when a ref in the superproject
changed, these checks were extended to also be performed when fetching
into FETCH_HEAD for completeness, and add a test for that too.

Put the allow_exclude_promisor_objects flag in setup_revision_opt. When
it was in rev_info, it was unclear when it was used, since rev_info is
passed to functions that don't use the flag. This resulted in
unnecessary setting of the flag in prune.c, so fix that as well.

When constructing a struct repository for a submodule for some revision
of the superproject where the submodule is not contained in the index,
it may not be present in the working tree currently either. In that
situation giving a 'path' argument is not useful. Upgrade the
repo_submodule_init function to take a struct submodule instead.
The submodule struct can be obtained via submodule_from_{path, name} or
an artificial submodule struct can be passed in.
While we are at it, rename the repository struct in the repo_submodule_init
function, which is to be initialized, to a name that is not confused with
the struct submodule as easily. Perform such renames in similar functions
as well.
Also move its documentation into the header file.

Commit d8981c3f88 ("format-patch: do not let its diff-options affect
--range-diff", 2018-11-30) taught `show_range_diff()` to accept a
NULL-pointer as an indication that it should use its own "reasonable
default". That fixed a regression from a5170794 ("Merge branch
'ab/range-diff-no-patch'", 2018-11-18), but unfortunately it introduced
a regression of its own.
In particular, it means we forget the `file` member of the diff options,
so rather than placing a range-diff in the cover-letter, we write it to
stdout. In order to fix this, rewrite the two callers adjusted by
d8981c3f88 to instead create a "dummy" set of diff options where they
only fill in the fields we absolutely require, such as output file and
color.
Modify and extend the existing tests to try and verify that the right
contents end up in the right place.
Don't revert `show_range_diff()`, i.e., let it keep accepting NULL.
Rather than removing what is dead code and figuring out it isn't
actually dead and we've broken 2.20, just leave it for now.

An error message that sugggests how to give correct arguments to
"git push" has been updated.

The advice message to tell the user to migrate an existing graft
file to the replace system when a graft file was read was shown
even when "git replace --convert-graft-file" command, which is the
way the message suggests to use, was running, which made little
sense.

"git rebase --stat" to transplant a piece of history onto a totally
unrelated history were not working before and silently showed wrong
result. With the recent reimplementation in C, it started to instead
die with an error message, as the original logic was not prepared

"git rebase" reimplemented recently in C accidentally changed the

When rebasing to a commit history that has no common commits with the
current branch, there is no merge base. In diffstat mode, this means
that we cannot compare to the merge base, but we have to compare to the
empty tree instead.
Also, if running in verbose diffstat mode, we should not output
Changes from <merge-base> to <onto>
as that does not make sense without any merge base.
Note: neither scripted nor built-in versoin of `git rebase` were
prepared for this situation well. We use this opportunity not only to
fix the bug(s), but also to make both versions' output consistent in
this instance. And add a regression test to keep this working in all
eternity.

The scripted version of "rebase" honored the `GIT_REFLOG_ACTION`,
and some automation scripts expected the reflog entries to be
prefixed with "rebase -i", not "rebase", after running "rebase -i".
This regressed in the reimplementation in C.
Fix that, and add a regression test, both with `GIT_REFLOG_ACTION`
set and unset.
Note: the reflog message for "rebase finished" did *not* honor
GIT_REFLOG_ACTION, and as we are very late in the v2.20.0-rcN phase,
we leave that bug for later (as it seems that that bug has been with
us from the very beginning).

Stop leaking how the primary output of format-patch is customized to
the range-diff machinery and instead let the latter use its own
"reasonable default", in order to correct the breakage introduced by
a5170794 ("Merge branch 'ab/range-diff-no-patch'", 2018-11-18) on
the 'master' front. "git format-patch --range-diff..." without any
weird diff option started to include the "range-diff --stat" output,
which is rather useless right now, that made the whole thing
unusable and this is probably the least disruptive way to whip the
codebase into a shippable shape.
We may want to later make the range-diff driven by format-patch more
configurable, but that would have to wait until we have a good
design.

The advice to run 'git replace --convert-graft-file' added in
f9f99b3f7d ("Deprecate support for .git/info/grafts", 2018-04-29)
didn't add an exception for the 'git replace --convert-graft-file'
codepath itself.
As a result we'd suggest running --convert-graft-file while the user
was running --convert-graft-file, which makes no sense. Before:
$ git replace --convert-graft-file

A regression in Git 2.12 era made "git fsck" fall into an infinite
loop while processing truncated loose objects.

Operations on promisor objects make sense in the context of only a
small subset of the commands that internally use the revisions
machinery, but the "--exclude-promisor-objects" option were taken
and led to nonsense results by commands like "log", to which it
didn't make much sense. This has been corrected.
