70a8fc999d stop using fnmatch (either native or compat)
Since v1.8.4 (about six months ago) wildmatch is used as default
replacement for fnmatch. We have seen only one fix since so wildmatch
probably has done a good job as fnmatch replacement. This concludes
the fnmatch->wildmatch transition by no longer relying on fnmatch.

ab03803c02 git-compat-util.h: #undef (v)snprintf before #define them
When we detect that vsnprintf / snprintf are broken, we #define them
to an alternative implementation. On OS X, stdio.h already
re-define them in `git-compat-util.h'.

956623157f strbuf: introduce starts_with() and ends_with()
prefixcmp() and suffixcmp() share the common "cmp" suffix that
typically are used to name functions that can be used for ordering,
but they can't, because they are not antisymmetric:

        prefixcmp("foo", "foobar") < 0
        prefixcmp("foobar", "foo") == 0

We in fact do not use these functions for ordering. Replace them
with functions that just check for equality.

Add starts_with() and end_with() that will be used to replace
prefixcmp() and suffixcmp(), respectively, as the first step. These
are named after corresponding functions/methods in programming
languages, like Java, Python and Ruby.

In vcs-svn/fast_export.c, there was already an ends_with() function
that did the same thing. Let's use the new one instead while at it.

d6cbf2fa7a Merge branch 'rj/cygwin-clarify-use-of-cheating-lstat'
Cygwin port added a "not quite correct but a lot faster and good
enough for many lstat() calls that are only used to see if the
working tree entity matches the index entry" lstat() emulation some
time ago, and it started biting us in places. This removes it and
uses the standard lstat() that comes with Cygwin.

Recent topic that uses lstat on packed-refs file is broken when
this cheating lstat is used, and this is a simplest fix that is
also the cleanest direction to go in the long run.

7c3ecb3254 Don't close pack fd when free'ing pack windows
Now that close_one_pack() has been introduced to handle file
descriptor pressure, it is not strictly necessary to close the
pack file descriptor in unuse_one_window() when we're under memory
pressure.

Jeff King provided a justification for leaving the pack file open:

   If you close packfile descriptors, you can run into racy situations
   where somebody else is repacking and deleting packs, and they go away
   while you are trying to access them. If you keep a descriptor open,
   you're fine; they last to the end of the process. If you don't, then
   they disappear from under you.

   For normal object access, this isn't that big a deal; we just rescan
   the packs and retry. But if you are packing yourself (e.g., because
   you are a pack-objects started by upload-pack for a clone or fetch),
   it's much harder to recover (and we print some warnings).

Let's do so (or uh, not do so).

f66450ae94 cygwin: Remove the Win32 l/stat() implementation
Commit adbc0b6b ("cygwin: Use native Win32 API for stat", 30-09-2008)
added a Win32 specific implementation of the stat functions. In order
to handle absolute paths, cygwin mount points and symbolic links, this
implementation may fall back on the standard cygwin l/stat() functions.
Also, the choice of cygwin or Win32 functions is made lazily (by the
first call(s) to l/stat) based on the state of some config variables.

Unfortunately, this "schizophrenic stat" implementation has been the
source of many problems ever since. For example, see commits 7faee6b8,
79748439, 452993c2, 085479e7, b8a97333, 924aaf3e, 05bab3ea and 0117c2f0.

In order to avoid further problems, such as the issue raised by the new
reference handling API, remove the Win32 l/stat() implementation.

380395d094 mingw: rename WIN32 cpp macro to GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE
Throughout git, it is assumed that the WIN32 preprocessor symbol is
defined on native Windows setups (mingw and msvc) and not on Cygwin.
On Cygwin, most of the time git can pretend this is just another Unix
machine, and Windows-specific magic is generally counterproductive.

Unfortunately Cygwin *does* define the WIN32 symbol in some headers.
Best to rely on a new git-specific symbol GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE instead,
defined as follows:

	#if defined(WIN32) && !defined(__CYGWIN__)
	# define GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE
	#endif

After this change, it should be possible to drop the
CYGWIN_V15_WIN32API setting without any negative effect.

c19a490e37 usage: allow pluggable die-recursion checks
When any git code calls die or die_errno, we use a counter
to detect recursion into the die functions from any of the
helper functions. However, such a simple counter is not good
enough for threaded programs, which may call die from a
sub-thread, killing only the sub-thread (but incrementing
the counter for everyone).

Rather than try to deal with threads ourselves here, let's
just allow callers to plug in their own recursion-detection
function. This is similar to how we handle the die routine
(the caller plugs in a die routine which may kill only the
sub-thread).

4698c8feb1 config: allow inaccessible configuration under $HOME
The changes v1.7.12.1~2^2~4 (config: warn on inaccessible files,
2012-08-21) and v1.8.1.1~22^2~2 (config: treat user and xdg config
permission problems as errors, 2012-10-13) were intended to prevent
important configuration (think "[transfer] fsckobjects") from being
ignored when the configuration is unintentionally unreadable (for
example with EIO on a flaky filesystem, or with ENOMEM due to a DoS
attack). Usually ~/.gitconfig and ~/.config/git are readable by the
current user, and if they aren't then it would be easy to fix those
permissions, so the damage from adding this check should have been
minimal.

Unfortunately the access() check often trips when git is being run as
a server. A daemon (such as inetd or git-daemon) starts as "root",
creates a listening socket, and then drops privileges, meaning that
when git commands are invoked they cannot access $HOME and die with

 fatal: unable to access '/root/.config/git/config': Permission denied

Any patch to fix this would have one of three problems:

  1. We annoy sysadmins who need to take an extra step to handle HOME
     when dropping privileges (the current behavior, or any other
     proposal that they have to opt into).

  2. We annoy sysadmins who want to set HOME when dropping privileges,
     either by making what they want to do impossible, or making them
     set an extra variable or option to accomplish what used to work
     (e.g., a patch to git-daemon to set HOME when --user is passed).

  3. We loosen the check, so some cases which might be noteworthy are
     not caught.

This patch is of type (3).

Treat user and xdg configuration that are inaccessible due to
permissions (EACCES) as though no user configuration was provided at
all.

An alternative method would be to check if $HOME is readable, but that
would not help in cases where the user who dropped privileges had a
globally readable HOME with only .config or .gitconfig being private.

This does not change the behavior when /etc/gitconfig or .git/config
is unreadable (since those are more serious configuration errors),
nor when ~/.gitconfig or ~/.config/git is unreadable due to problems
other than permissions.

0117c2f043 Make core.sharedRepository work under cygwin 1.7
When core.sharedRepository is used, set_shared_perm() in path.c
needs lstat() to return the correct POSIX permissions.

The default for cygwin is core.ignoreCygwinFSTricks = false, which
means that the fast implementation in do_stat() is used instead of
lstat().

lstat() under cygwin uses the Windows security model to implement
POSIX-like permissions. The user, group or everyone bits can be set
individually.

do_stat() simplifes the file permission bits, and may return a wrong
value. The read-only attribute of a file is used to calculate the
permissions, resulting in either rw-r--r-- or r--r--r--

One effect of the simplified do_stat() is that t1301 fails.

Add a function cygwin_get_st_mode_bits() which returns the POSIX
permissions. When not compiling for cygwin, true_mode_bits() in
path.c is used.

Side note:

t1301 passes under cygwin 1.5.

The "user write" bit is synchronized with the "read only" attribute
of a file:

    $ chmod 444 x
    $ attrib x
    A    R     C:\temp\pt\x

    cygwin 1.7 would show
    A          C:\temp\pt\x

In order to fix the compilation errors, we use the same solution adopted
in that earlier commit. In particular, we set _WIN32_WINNT to 0x0502
(which would target Windows Server 2003) prior to including the winsock2.h

Also, we delete the compat/vcbuild/include/sys/poll.h header file, since

5ded807f7c fix clang -Wunused-value warnings for error functions
Commit a469a10 wraps some error calls in macros to give the
compiler a chance to do more static analysis on their
constant -1 return value. We limit the use of these macros
to __GNUC__, since gcc is the primary beneficiary of the new
information, and because we use GNU features for handling
variadic macros.

However, clang also defines __GNUC__, but generates warnings
with -Wunused-value when these macros are used in a void
context, because the constant "-1" ends up being useless.
Gcc does not complain about this case (though it is unclear
if it is because it is smart enough to see what we are
doing, or too dumb to realize that the -1 is unused). We
can squelch the warning by just disabling these macros when
clang is in use.

b2d05e0653 git-compat-util.h: do not #include <sys/param.h> by default
Earlier we allowed platforms that lack <sys/param.h> not to include
the header file from git-compat-util.h; we have included this header
file since the early days back when we used MAXPATHLEN (which we no
longer use) and also depended on it slurping ULONG_MAX (which we get
by including stdint.h or inttypes.h these days).

It turns out that we can compile our modern codebase just file
without including it on many platforms (so far, Fedora, Debian,
Ubuntu, MinGW, Mac OS X, Cygwin, HP-Nonstop, QNX and z/OS are
reported to be OK).

Let's stop including it by default, and on platforms that need it to
be included, leave "make NEEDS_SYS_PARAM_H=YesPlease" as an escape
hatch and ask them to report to us, so that we can find out about
the real dependency and fix it in a more platform agnostic way.

e208f9cc75 make error()'s constant return value more visible
When git is compiled with "gcc -Wuninitialized -O3", some
inlined calls provide an additional opportunity for the
compiler to do static analysis on variable initialization.
For example, with two functions like this:

  int get_foo(int *foo)
  {
	if (something_that_might_fail() < 0)
		return error("unable to get foo");
	*foo = 0;
	return 0;
  }

  void some_fun(void)
  {
	  int foo;
	  if (get_foo(&foo) < 0)
		  return -1;
	  printf("foo is %d\n", foo);
  }

If get_foo() is not inlined, then when compiling some_fun,
gcc sees only that a pointer to the local variable is
passed, and must assume that it is an out parameter that
is initialized after get_foo returns.

However, when get_foo() is inlined, the compiler may look at
all of the code together and see that some code paths in
get_foo() do not initialize the variable. As a result, it
prints a warning. But what the compiler can't see is that
error() always returns -1, and therefore we know that either
we return early from some_fun, or foo ends up initialized,
and the code is safe. The warning is a false positive.

If we can make the compiler aware that error() will always
return -1, it can do a better job of analysis. The simplest
method would be to inline the error() function. However,
this doesn't work, because gcc will not inline a variadc
function. We can work around this by defining a macro. This
relies on two gcc extensions:

  1. Variadic macros (these are present in C99, but we do
     not rely on that).

  2. Gcc treats the "##" paste operator specially between a
     comma and __VA_ARGS__, which lets our variadic macro
     work even if no format parameters are passed to
     error().

Since we are using these extra features, we hide the macro
behind an #ifdef. This is OK, though, because our goal was
just to help gcc.

0fcec2ce54 format-patch: make rfc2047 encoding more strict
RFC 2047 requires more characters to be encoded than it is currently done.
Especially, RFC 2047 distinguishes between allowed remaining characters
in encoded words in addresses (From, To, etc.) and other headers, such
as Subject.

Make add_rfc2047() and is_rfc2047_special() location dependent and include
all non-allowed characters to hopefully be RFC 2047 conformant.

This especially fixes a problem, where RFC 822 specials (e. g. ".") were
left unencoded in addresses, which was solved with a non-standard-conforming
workaround in the past (which is going to be removed in a follow-up patch).

96b9e0e313 config: treat user and xdg config permission problems as errors
Git reads multiple configuration files: settings come first from the
system config file (typically /etc/gitconfig), then the xdg config
file (typically ~/.config/git/config), then the user's dotfile
(~/.gitconfig), then the repository configuration (.git/config).

Git has always used access(2) to decide whether to use each file; as
an unfortunate side effect, that means that if one of these files is
unreadable (e.g., EPERM or EIO), git skips it. So if I use
~/.gitconfig to override some settings but make a mistake and give it
the wrong permissions then I am subject to the settings the sysadmin
chose for /etc/gitconfig.

Better to error out and ask the user to correct the problem.

This only affects the user and xdg config files, since the user
presumably has enough access to fix their permissions. If the system
config file is unreadable, the best we can do is to warn about it so
the user knows to notify someone and get on with work in the meantime.

Right now we do not know if the noise reduction is necessary, but it

76759c7dff git on Mac OS and precomposed unicode
Mac OS X mangles file names containing unicode on file systems HFS+,
VFAT or SAMBA. When a file using unicode code points outside ASCII
is created on a HFS+ drive, the file name is converted into
decomposed unicode and written to disk. No conversion is done if
the file name is already decomposed unicode.

Calling open("\xc3\x84", ...) with a precomposed "Ä" yields the same
result as open("\x41\xcc\x88",...) with a decomposed "Ä".

As a consequence, readdir() returns the file names in decomposed
unicode, even if the user expects precomposed unicode. Unlike on
HFS+, Mac OS X stores files on a VFAT drive (e.g. an USB drive) in
precomposed unicode, but readdir() still returns file names in
decomposed unicode. When a git repository is stored on a network
share using SAMBA, file names are send over the wire and written to
disk on the remote system in precomposed unicode, but Mac OS X
readdir() returns decomposed unicode to be compatible with its
behaviour on HFS+ and VFAT.

The unicode decomposition causes many problems:

- The names "git add" and other commands get from the end user may
  often be precomposed form (the decomposed form is not easily input
  from the keyboard), but when the commands read from the filesystem
  to see what it is going to update the index with already is on the
  filesystem, readdir() will give decomposed form, which is different.

- Similarly "git log", "git mv" and all other commands that need to
  compare pathnames found on the command line (often but not always
  precomposed form; a command line input resulting from globbing may
  be in decomposed) with pathnames found in the tree objects (should
  be precomposed form to be compatible with other systems and for
  consistency in general).

- The same for names stored in the index, which should be
  precomposed, that may need to be compared with the names read from
  readdir().

NFS mounted from Linux is fully transparent and does not suffer from
the above.

As Mac OS X treats precomposed and decomposed file names as equal,
we can

 - wrap readdir() on Mac OS X to return the precomposed form, and

 - normalize decomposed form given from the command line also to the
   precomposed form,

to ensure that all pathnames used in Git are always in the
precomposed form. This behaviour can be requested by setting
"core.precomposedunicode" configuration variable to true.

The code in compat/precomposed_utf8.c implements basically 4 new
functions: precomposed_utf8_opendir(), precomposed_utf8_readdir(),
precomposed_utf8_closedir() and precompose_argv(). The first three
are to wrap opendir(3), readdir(3), and closedir(3) functions.

The argv[] conversion allows to use the TAB filename completion done
by the shell on command line. It tolerates other tools which use
readdir() to feed decomposed file names into git.

When creating a new git repository with "git init" or "git clone",
"core.precomposedunicode" will be set "false".

The user needs to activate this feature manually. She typically
sets core.precomposedunicode to "true" on HFS and VFAT, or file
systems mounted via SAMBA.

2f70587502 ident: report passwd errors with a more friendly message
When getpwuid fails, we give a cute but cryptic message.
While it makes sense if you know that getpwuid or identity
functions are being called, this code is triggered behind
the scenes by quite a few git commands these days (e.g.,
receive-pack on a remote server might use it for a reflog;
the current message is hard to distinguish from an
authentication error). Let's switch to something that gives
a little more context.

While we're at it, we can factor out all of the
cut-and-pastes of the "you don't exist" message into a
wrapper function. Rather than provide xgetpwuid, let's make
it even more specific to just getting the passwd entry for
the current uid. That's the only way we use getpwuid anyway,
and it lets us make an even more specific error message.

The current message also fails to mention errno. While the
usual cause for getpwuid failing is that the user does not
exist, mentioning errno makes it easier to diagnose these
problems. Note that POSIX specifies that errno remain
untouched if the passwd entry does not exist (but will be
set on actual errors), whereas some systems will return
ENOENT or similar for a missing entry. We handle both cases
in our wrapper.

cfc755d30e Compile fix for MSVC: Do not include sys/resources.h
Do not include header files when compiling with MSVC that do not
exist and which are also not included when compiling with MINGW.
A direct consequence is that git can be compiled again with MSVC
because the missing "sys/resources.h" is no longer included.

Instead of current

	#ifndef mingw32 is the only one that is strange
        ... everything for systems that is not strange ...
        #else
        ... include mingw specific tweaks ...
        #endif
        #ifdef msvc is also strange
        ... include msvc specific tweaks ...
        #endif

it turns things around and says what it wants to achieve in a more direct
way, i.e.

	#if mingw32
        #include "compat/mingw.h"
	#elif msvc
        #include "compat/msvc.h"
	#else
        ... all the others ...
	#endif

which makes it a lot simpler.

d1c69255a1 real_path: do not assume '/' is the path seperator
real_path currently assumes it's input had '/' as path seperator.
This assumption does not hold true for the code-path from
prefix_path (on Windows), where real_path can be called before

Fix real_path so it doesn't make this assumption. Create a helper

2f6c9760de magic pathspec: futureproof shorthand form
The earlier design was to take whatever non-alnum that the short format
parser happens to support, leaving the rest as part of the pattern, so a
version of git that knows '*' magic and a version that does not would have
behaved differently when given ":*Makefile". The former would have
applied the '*' magic to the pattern "Makefile", while the latter would
used no magic to the pattern "*Makefile".

Instead, just reserve all non-alnum ASCII letters that are neither glob
nor regexp special as potential magic signature, and when we see a magic
that is not supported, die with an error message, just like the longhand
codepath does.

With this, ":%#!*Makefile" will always mean "%#!" magic applied to the
pattern "*Makefile", no matter what version of git is used (it is a
different matter if the version of git supports all of these three magic
matching rules).

Also make ':' without anything else to mean "there is no pathspec". This
would allow differences between "git log" and "git log ." run from the top
level of the working tree (the latter simplifies no-op commits away from
the history) to be expressed from a subdirectory by saying "git log :".

ebae9ff95d compat: add missing #include <sys/resource.h>
Starting with commit c793430 (Limit file descriptors used by packs,
2011-02-28), git uses getrlimit to tell how many file descriptors it
can use. Unfortunately it does not include the header declaring that
function, resulting in compilation errors:

 sha1_file.c: In function 'open_packed_git_1':
 sha1_file.c:718: error: storage size of 'lim' isn't known
 sha1_file.c:721: warning: implicit declaration of function 'getrlimit'
 sha1_file.c:721: error: 'RLIMIT_NOFILE' undeclared (first use in this function)
 sha1_file.c:718: warning: unused variable 'lim'

The standard header to include for this is <sys/resource.h> (which on
some systems itself requires declarations from <sys/types.h> or
<sys/time.h>). Probably the problem was missed until now because in
current glibc sys/resource.h happens to be included by sys/wait.h.

MinGW does not provide sys/resource.h (and compat/mingw takes care of
providing getrlimit some other way), so add the missing #include to
the "#ifndef __MINGW32__" block in git-compat-util.h.

26db0f2e3a compat: fall back on __va_copy if available
Since an obvious implementation of va_list is to make it a pointer
into the stack frame, implementing va_copy as "dst = src" will work on
many systems. Platforms that use something different (e.g., a size-1
array of structs, to be assigned with *(dst) = *(src)) will need some
other compatibility macro, though.

Luckily, as the glibc manual hints, such systems tend to provide the
__va_copy macro (introduced in GCC in March, 1997). By using that if
it is available, we can cover our bases pretty well.

Discovered by building with CC="gcc -std=c89" on an amd64 machine:

 $ make CC=c89 strbuf.o
 [...]
 strbuf.c: In function 'strbuf_vaddf':
 strbuf.c:211:2: error: incompatible types when assigning to type 'va_list'

ab8632ae36 compat: provide a fallback va_copy definition
va_copy is C99. We have avoided using va_copy many times in the past,
which has led to a bunch of cut-and-paste. From everything I found
searching the web, implementations have historically either provided
va_copy or just let your code assume that simple assignment of worked.

So my guess is that this will be sufficient, though we won't really
know for sure until somebody reports a problem.

1368f65002 compat: helper for detecting unsigned overflow
The idiom (a + b < a) works fine for detecting that an unsigned
integer has overflowed, but a more explicit

	unsigned_add_overflows(a, b)

might be easier to read.

Define such a macro, expanding roughly to ((a) < UINT_MAX - (b)).
Because the expansion uses each argument only once outside of sizeof()
expressions, it is safe to use with arguments that have side effects.

The odb_mkstemp and odb_pack_keep functions open files under the

Move these functions to environment.o, closer to their dependencies.

Attempting to mmap (via git-add or similar) a file larger than 4GB on
32-bit Linux systems results in a repository that has only the file

When xsize_t was introduced to handle this truncation in dc49cd7 (Cast

6555b196f0 Fix _XOPEN_SOURCE problem on DragonFly
As on FreeBSD, defining _XOPEN_SOURCE to 600 on DragonFly BSD 2.4-RELEASE
or later hides symbols from programs, which leads to implicit declaration
of functions, making the return value to be assumed an int. On architectures
where sizeof(int) < sizeof(void *), this can cause unexpected behaviors or
crashes.
This change won't affect other OSes unless they define __DragonFly__ macro,
or older versions of DragonFly BSD as the current git code doesn't rely on
the features only available with _XOPEN_SOURCE set to 600 on DragonFly.

64b1cb74f8 Introduce usagef() that takes a printf-style format
Some new callers would want to use printf-like formatting, when issuing
their usage messages. An option is to change usage() itself also be like
printf(), which would make it similar to die() and warn().

But usage() is typically fixed, as opposed to die() and warn() that gives
diagnostics depending on the situation. Indeed, the majority of strings
given by existing callsites to usage() are fixed strings. If we were to
make usage() take printf-style format, they all need to be changed to have
"%s" as their first argument.

So instead, introduce usagef() so that limited number of callers can use
it.

435bdf8c7f Make usage of windows.h lean and mean
Centralize the include of windows.h in git-compat-util.h, turn on
WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN to avoid including plenty of other header files
which is not needed in Git. Also ensure we load winsock2.h first,
so we don't load the older winsock definitions at a later stage,
since they contain duplicate definitions.

When moving windows.h into git-compat-util.h, we need to protect
the definition of struct pollfd in mingw.h, since this file is used
by both MinGW and MSVC, and the latter defines this struct in
winsock2.h.

We need to keep the windows.h include in compat/win32.h, since its
shared by both MinGW and Cygwin, and we're not touching Cygwin in
this commit. The include in git-compat-util.h is protected with an
ifdef WIN32, which is not the case when compiling for Cygwin.

Don't define _XOPEN_SOURCE
Do    define _SGI_SOURCE

Defining _XOPEN_SOURCE prevents many of the common functions and macros

declarations, _BUT_ provides a horribly broken snprintf(). SGI does have
a working snprintf(), but it is only provided when _NO_XOPEN5 evaluates
to zero, and this only happens if _XOPEN_SOURCE is defined which, as
mentioned above, prevents many other common functions and defines.

4cb18a49df git-compat-util.h: tweak the way _XOPEN_SOURCE is set on Solaris
On Solaris, when _XOPEN_EXTENDED is set, its header file forces the
programs to be XPG4v2, defeating any _XOPEN_SOURCE setting to say we are
XPG5 or XPG6. Also on Solaris, XPG6 programs must be compiled with a c99
compiler, while non XPG6 programs must be compiled with a pre-c99 compiler.

So when compiling on Solaris, always refrain from setting _XOPEN_EXTENDED,
and then set _XOPEN_SOURCE to 600 or 500 based on whether a c99 compiler
is being used or not.

30d8080ca7 Teach Solaris that _XOPEN_SOURCE=600 really menas XPG6
In git-compat-util.h, we do

    #define _XOPEN_SOURCE 600
    #define _XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED 1

unless we are on BSD or SCO.

On OpenSolaris (200811), /usr/include/sys/feature_tests.h has this nice
table:

    Feature Test Macro				     Specification
    ------------------------------------------------  -------------
    _XOPEN_SOURCE                                         XPG3
    _XOPEN_SOURCE && _XOPEN_VERSION = 4                   XPG4
    _XOPEN_SOURCE && _XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED = 1           XPG4v2
    _XOPEN_SOURCE = 500                                   XPG5
    _XOPEN_SOURCE = 600  (or POSIX_C_SOURCE=200112L)      XPG6

Later in the same header, compilation with -c99 is made to fail if _XPG6 is
not set, like this:

    #if defined(_STDC_C99) && (defined(__XOPEN_OR_POSIX) && !defined(_XPG6))
    #error "Compiler or options invalid for pre-UNIX 03 X/Open applications \
            and pre-2001 POSIX applications"
    #elif ...

The problem is that they check things in an order that is inconvenient for
us. When they see _XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED, they declare that we are XPG4v2,
regardless of the value of _XOPEN_SOURCE.

To work around this problem, do not define _XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED on
Sun's.

34779c535c Windows: Skip fstat/lstat optimization in write_entry()
Commit e4c72923 (write_entry(): use fstat() instead of lstat() when file
is open, 2009-02-09) introduced an optimization of write_entry().
Unfortunately, we cannot take advantage of this optimization on Windows
because there is no guarantee that the time stamps are updated before the
file is closed:

  "The only guarantee about a file timestamp is that the file time is
   correctly reflected when the handle that makes the change is closed."

(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms724290(VS.85).aspx)

The failure of this optimization on Windows can be observed most easily by
running a 'git checkout' that has to update several large files. In this
case, 'git checkout' will report modified files, but infact only the
timestamps were incorrectly recorded in the index, as can be verified by a
subsequent 'git diff', which shows no change.

Dmitry Potapov reports the same fix needs on Cygwin; this commit contains
his updates for that.

b130a72b27 MinGW: implement mmap
Add USE_WIN32_MMAP which triggers the use of windows' native
file memory mapping functionality in git_mmap()/git_munmap() functions.

As git functions currently use mmap with MAP_PRIVATE set only, this
implementation supports only that mode for now.

On Windows, offsets for memory mapped files need to match the allocation
granularity. Take this into account when calculating the packed git-
windowsize and file offsets. At the moment, the only function which makes
use of offsets in conjunction with mmap is use_pack() in sha1-file.c.

Git fast-import's code path tries to map a portion of the temporary
packfile that exceeds the current filesize, i.e. offset+length is
greater than the filesize. The NO_MMAP code worked with that since pread()
just reads the file content until EOF and returns gracefully, while
MapViewOfFile() aborts the mapping and returns 'Access Denied'.
Working around that by determining the filesize and adjusting the length
parameter.

c567383b1e Create USE_ST_TIMESPEC and turn it on for Darwin
Not all OSes use st_ctim and st_mtim in their struct stat. In
particular, it appears that OS X uses st_*timespec instead. So add a
Makefile variable and #define called USE_ST_TIMESPEC to switch the
USE_NSEC defines to use st_*timespec.

This also turns it on by default for OS X (Darwin) machines. Likely
this is a sane default for other BSD kernels as well, but I don't have
any to test that assumption on.

c06ff4908b Record ns-timestamps if possible, but do not use it without USE_NSEC
Traditionally, the lack of USE_NSEC meant "do not record nor use the
nanosecond resolution part of the file timestamps". To avoid problems on
filesystems that lose the ns part when the metadata is flushed to the disk
and then later read back in, disabling USE_NSEC has been a good idea in
general.

If you are on a filesystem without such an issue, it does not hurt to read
and store them in the cached stat data in the index entries even if your
git is compiled without USE_NSEC. The index left with such a version of
git can be read by git compiled with USE_NSEC and it can make use of the
nanosecond part to optimize the check to see if the path on the filesystem
hsa been modified since we last looked at.

6e180cdcec Make sure objects/pack exists before creating a new pack
In a repository created with git older than f49fb35 (git-init-db: create
"pack" subdirectory under objects, 2005-06-27), objects/pack/ directory is
not created upon initialization. It was Ok because subdirectories are
created as needed inside directories init-db creates, and back then,
packfiles were recent invention.

After the said commit, new codepaths started relying on the presense of
objects/pack/ directory in the repository. This was exacerbated with
8b4eb6b (Do not perform cross-directory renames when creating packs,
2008-09-22) that moved the location temporary pack files are created from
objects/ directory to objects/pack/ directory, because moving temporary to
the final location was done carefully with lazy leading directory creation.

Many packfile related operations in such an old repository can fail
mysteriously because of this.

This commit introduces two helper functions to make things work better.

 - odb_mkstemp() is a specialized version of mkstemp() to refactor the
   code and teach it to create leading directories as needed;

 - odb_pack_keep() refactors the code to create a ".keep" file while
   create leading directories as needed.

adbc0b6b6e cygwin: Use native Win32 API for stat
lstat/stat functions in Cygwin are very slow, because they try to emulate
some *nix things that Git does not actually need. This patch adds Win32
specific implementation of these functions for Cygwin.

This implementation handles most situation directly but in some rare cases
it falls back on the implementation provided for Cygwin. This is necessary
for two reasons:

- Cygwin has its own file hierarchy, so absolute paths used in Cygwin is
  not suitable to be used Win32 API. cygwin_conv_to_win32_path can not be
  used because it automatically dereference Cygwin symbol links, also it
  causes extra syscall. Fortunately Git rarely use absolute paths, so we
  always use Cygwin implementation for absolute paths.

- Support of symbol links. Cygwin stores symbol links as ordinary using
  one of two possible formats. Therefore, the fast implementation falls
  back to Cygwin functions if it detects potential use of symbol links.

The speed of this implementation should be the same as mingw_lstat for
common cases, but it is considerable slower when the specified file name
does not exist.

Despite all efforts to make the fast implementation as robust as possible,
it may not work well for some very rare situations. I am aware only one
situation: use Cygwin mount to bind unrelated paths inside repository
together. Therefore, the core.ignoreCygwinFSTricks configuration option is
provided, which controls whether native or Cygwin version of stat is used.

25fe217b86 Windows: Treat Windows style path names.
GIT's guts work with a forward slash as a path separators. We do not change
that. Rather we make sure that only "normalized" paths enter the depths
of the machinery.

We have to translate backslashes to forward slashes in the prefix and in
command line arguments. Fortunately, all of them are passed through
functions in setup.c.

A macro has_dos_drive_path() is defined that checks whether a path begins
with a drive letter+colon combination. This predicate is always false on
Unix. Another macro is_dir_sep() abstracts that a backslash is also a
directory separator on Windows.

112db553b0 Shrink the git binary a bit by avoiding unnecessary inline functions
So I was looking at the disgusting size of the git binary, and even with
the debugging removed, and using -Os instead of -O2, the size of the text
section was pretty high. In this day and age I guess almost a megabyte of
text isn't really all that surprising, but it still doesn't exactly make
me think "lean and mean".

With -Os, a surprising amount of text space is wasted on inline functions
that end up just being replicated multiple times, and where performance
really isn't a valid reason to inline them. In particular, the trivial
wrapper functions like "xmalloc()" are used _everywhere_, and making them
inline just duplicates the text (and the string we use to 'die()' on
failure) unnecessarily.

So this just moves them into a "wrapper.c" file, getting rid of a tiny bit
of unnecessary bloat. The following numbers are both with "CFLAGS=-Os":

Before:
	[torvalds@woody git]$ size git
	   text data bss dec hex	filename
	 700460	  15160	 292184	1007804	  f60bc	git

After:
	[torvalds@woody git]$ size git
	   text data bss dec hex	filename
	 670540	  15160	 292184	 977884	  eebdc	git

so it saves almost 30k of text-space (it actually saves more than that
with the default -O2, but I don't think that's necessarily a very relevant
number from a "try to shrink git" standpoint).

It might conceivably have a performance impact, but none of this should be
_that_ performance critical. The real cost is not generally in the wrapper
anyway, but in the code it wraps (ie the cost of "xread()" is all in the
read itself, not in the trivial wrapping of it).

This patch adds support to compile and run git on 12 additional platforms.
The platforms are based on UNIX Systems Labs (USL)/Novell/SYS V code base.
The most common are Novell UnixWare 2.X.X, SCO UnixWare 7.X.X,
OpenServer 5.0.X, OpenServer 6.0.X, and SCO pre OSR 5 platforms.

Looking at the the various platform headers, I find:

	#if defined(_KERNEL) || !defined(_POSIX_SOURCE) \
	     && !defined(_POSIX_C_SOURCE) && !defined(_XOPEN_SOURCE)

which hides u_short and other typedefs that other header files on these
platforms depend on. WIth _XOPEN_SOURCE defined, sources that include
system header files that depend on the typedefs such as u_short cannot be
compiled on these platforms.

__USLC__ indicates UNIX System Labs Corperation (USLC), or a Novell-derived
compiler and/or some SysV based OS's.

__M_UNIX indicates XENIX/SCO UNIX/OpenServer 5.0.7 and prior releases
of the SCO OS's. It is used just like Apple and BSD, both of these
shouldn't have _XOPEN_SOURCE defined.

43fe901b71 compat: Add simplified merge sort implementation from glibc
qsort in Windows 2000 (and various other C libraries) is a Quicksort
with the usual O(n^2) worst case. Unfortunately, sorting Git trees
seems to get very close to that worst case quite often:

    $ /git/gitbad runstatus
    # On branch master
    qsort, nmemb = 30842
    done, 237838087 comparisons.

This patch adds a simplified version of the merge sort that is glibc's
qsort(3). As a merge sort, this needs a temporary array equal in size
to the array that is to be sorted, but has a worst-case performance of
O(n log n).

The complexity that was removed is:

* Doing direct stores for word-size and -aligned data.
* Falling back to quicksort if the allocation required to perform the
  merge sort would likely push the machine into swap.

Even with these simplifications, this seems to outperform the Windows
qsort(3) implementation, even in Windows XP (where it is "fixed" and
doesn't trigger O(n^2) complexity on trees).

2600973f2c pre-POSIX.1-2001 systems do not have <sys/select.h>
POSIX.1-2001 has declaration of select(2) in <sys/select.h>, but
in the previous version of SUS, it was declared in <sys/time.h>

This introduces NO_SYS_SELECT_H macro in the Makefile to be set

not exist on them.

We could check _POSIX_VERSION with 200112L and do this
automatically, but earlier it was reported that the approach
does not work well on some vintage of HP-UX. Other systems may
get _POSIX_VERSION itself wrong. At least for now, this manual

698a68be7b Uninline prefixcmp()
Now the routine is an open-coded loop that avoids an extra
strlen() in the previous implementation, it got a bit too big to
be inlined. Uninlining it makes code footprint smaller but the
result still retains the avoidance of strlen() cost.

9e79f00f06 Simplify strchrnul() compat code
strchrnul() was introduced in glibc in April 1999 and included in
glibc-2.1. Checking for that version means the majority of all git
users would get to use the optimized version in glibc. Of the
remaining few some might get to use a slightly slower version
than necessary but probably not slower than what we have today.

Unfortunately, __GLIBC_PREREQ() macro was not available in glibc 2.1.1
which was short lived but already supported strchrnul(). Odd minority
users of that library needs to live with our compatibility inline version.

b21b9f1de3 add memmem()
memmem() is a nice GNU extension for searching a length limited string
in another one.

This compat version is based on the version found in glibc 2.2 (GPL 2);
I only removed the optimization of checking the first char by hand, and
generally tried to keep the code simple. We can add it back if memcmp
shows up high in a profile, but for now I prefer to keep it (almost
trivially) simple.

Since I don't really know which platforms beside those with a glibc
have their own memmem(), I used a heuristic: if NO_STRCASESTR is set,
then NO_MEMMEM is set, too.

cf606e3ddd git name-rev writes beyond the end of malloc() with large generations
When using git name-rev on my kernel tree I triggered a malloc()
corruption warning from glibc.

apw@pinky$ git log --pretty=one $N/base.. | git name-rev --stdin
*** glibc detected *** malloc(): memory corruption: 0x0bff8950 ***
Aborted

This comes from name_rev() which is building the name of the revision
in a malloc'd string, which it sprintf's into:

	char *new_name = xmalloc(len + 8);
	[...]
		sprintf(new_name, "%.*s~%d^%d", len, tip_name,
				generation, parent_number);

This allocation is only sufficient if the generation number is
less than 5 digits, in my case generation was 13432. In reality
parent_number can be up to 16 so that also can require two digits,
reducing us to 3 digits before we are at risk of blowing this
allocation.

This patch introduces a decimal_length() which approximates the
number of digits a type may hold, it produces the following:

Type                 Longest Value          Len  Est
----                 -------------          ---  ---

long long            -9223372036854775808    20   21

This is then used to size the new_name.

d1efefa46f Actually handle some-low memory conditions
Tim Ansell discovered his Debian server didn't permit git-daemon to
use as much memory as it needed to handle cloning a project with
a 128 MiB packfile. Filtering the strace provided by Tim of the
rev-list child showed this gem of a sequence:

  open("./objects/pack/pack-*.pack", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE <unfinished ...>
  <... open resumed> )              = 5

OK, so the packfile is fd 5...

  mmap2(NULL, 33554432, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, 5, 0 <unfinished ...>
   <... mmap2 resumed> )             = 0xb5e2d000

and we mapped one 32 MiB window from it at position 0...

   mmap2(NULL, 31020635, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, 5, 0x6000 <unfinished ...>
   <... mmap2 resumed> )             = -1 ENOMEM (Cannot allocate memory)

And we asked for another window further into the file. But got
denied. In Tim's case this was due to a resource limit on the
git-daemon process, and its children.

Now where are we in the code? We're down inside use_pack(),
after we have called unuse_one_window() enough times to make sure
we stay within our allowed maximum window size. However since we
didn't unmap the prior window at 0xb5e2d000 we aren't exceeding
the current limit (which probably was just the defaults).

But we're actually down inside xmmap()...

So we release the window we do have (by calling release_pack_memory),
assuming there is some memory pressure...

   munmap(0xb5e2d000, 33554432 <unfinished ...>
   <... munmap resumed> )            = 0
   close(5 <unfinished ...>
   <... close resumed> )             = 0

And that was the last window in this packfile. So we closed it.
Way to go us. Our xmmap did not expect release_pack_memory to
close the fd its about to map...

   mmap2(NULL, 31020635, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, 5, 0x6000 <unfinished ...>
   <... mmap2 resumed> )             = -1 EBADF (Bad file descriptor)

And so the Linux kernel happily tells us f' off.

   write(2, "fatal: ", 7 <unfinished ...>
   <... write resumed> )             = 7
   write(2, "Out of memory? mmap failed: Bad "..., 47 <unfinished ...>
   <... write resumed> )             = 47

And we report the bad file descriptor error, and not the ENOMEM,
and die, claiming we are out of memory. But actually that mmap
should have succeeded, as we had enough memory for that window,
seeing as how we released the prior one.

Originally when I developed the sliding window mmap feature I had
this exact same bug in fast-import, and I dealt with it by handing
in the struct packed_git* we want to open the new window for, as the
caller wasn't prepared to reopen the packfile if unuse_one_window
closed it. The same is true here from xmmap, but the caller doesn't
have the struct packed_git* handy. So I'm using the file descriptor
instead to perform the same test.

dc49cd769b Cast 64 bit off_t to 32 bit size_t
Some systems have sizeof(off_t) == 8 while sizeof(size_t) == 4.
This implies that we are able to access and work on files whose
maximum length is around 2^63-1 bytes, but we can only malloc or
mmap somewhat less than 2^32-1 bytes of memory.

On such a system an implicit conversion of off_t to size_t can cause
the size_t to wrap, resulting in unexpected and exciting behavior.
Right now we are working around all gcc warnings generated by the
-Wshorten-64-to-32 option by passing the off_t through xsize_t().

In the future we should make xsize_t on such problematic platforms
detect the wrapping and die if such a file is accessed.

c4001d92be Use off_t when we really mean a file offset.
Not all platforms have declared 'unsigned long' to be a 64 bit value,
but we want to support a 64 bit packfile (or close enough anyway)
in the near future as some projects are getting large enough that
their packed size exceeds 4 GiB.

By using off_t, the POSIX type that is declared to mean an offset
within a file, we support whatever maximum file size the underlying
operating system will handle. For most modern systems this is up
around 2^60 or higher.

bc6b4f52fc Add a compat/strtoumax.c for Solaris 8.
Solaris 8 was pre-c99, and they weren't willing to commit to
the strtoumax definition according to /usr/include/inttypes.h.

This adds NO_STRTOUMAX and NO_STRTOULL for ancient systems.
If NO_STRTOUMAX is defined, the routine in compat/strtoumax.c
will be used instead. That routine passes its arguments to
strtoull unless NO_STRTOULL is defined. If NO_STRTOULL, then
the routine uses strtoul (unsigned long).

this pollutes the namespace a bit.

bb79103194 Use fixed-size integers for the on-disk pack structure.
Plain integer types without a fixed size can vary between platforms. Even
though all common platforms use 32-bit ints, there is no guarantee that
this won't change at some point. Furthermore, specifying an integer type
with explicit size makes the definition of structures more obvious.

9130ac1e19 Better error messages for corrupt databases
This fixes another problem that Andy's case showed: git-fsck-objects
reports nonsensical results for corrupt objects.

There were actually two independent and confusing problems:

 - when we had a zero-sized file and used map_sha1_file, mmap() would
   return EINVAL, and git-fsck-objects would report that as an insane and
   confusing error. I don't know when this was introduced, it might have
   been there forever.

 - when "parse_object()" returned NULL, fsck would say "object not found",
   which can be very confusing, since obviously the object might "exist",
   it's just unparseable because it's totally corrupt.

So this just makes "xmmap()" return NULL for a zero-sized object (which is
a valid thing pointer, exactly the same way "malloc()" can return NULL for
a zero-sized allocation). That fixes the first problem (but we could have
fixed it in the caller too - I don't personally much care whichever way it
goes, but maybe somebody should check that the NO_MMAP case does
something sane in this case too?).

And the second problem is solved by just making the error message slightly
clearer - the failure to parse an object may be because it's missing or
corrupt, not necessarily because it's not "found".

22bac0ea52 Increase packedGit{Limit,WindowSize} on 64 bit systems.
If we have a 64 bit address space we can easily afford to commit
a larger amount of virtual address space to pack file access.
So on these platforms we should increase the default settings of
core.packedGit{Limit,WindowSize} to something that will better
handle very large projects.

Thanks to Andy Whitcroft for pointing out that we can safely
increase these defaults on such systems.

c4712e4553 Replace mmap with xmmap, better handling MAP_FAILED.
In some cases we did not even bother to check the return value of
mmap() and just assume it worked. This is bad, because if we are
out of virtual address space the kernel returned MAP_FAILED and we
would attempt to dereference that address, segfaulting without any
real error output to the user.

We are replacing all calls to mmap() with xmmap() and moving all
MAP_FAILED checking into that single location. If a mmap call
fails we try to release enough least-recently-used pack windows
to possibly succeed, then retry the mmap() attempt. If we cannot
mmap even after releasing pack memory then we die() as none of our
callers have any reasonable recovery strategy for a failed mmap.

97bfeb34df Release pack windows before reporting out of memory.
If we are about to fail because this process has run out of memory we
should first try to automatically control our appetite for address
space by releasing enough least-recently-used pack windows to gain
back enough memory such that we might actually be able to meet the
current allocation request.

This should help users who have fairly large repositories but are
working on systems with relatively small virtual address space.
Many times we see reports on the mailing list of these users running
out of memory during various Git operations. Dynamically decreasing
the amount of pack memory used when the demand for heap memory is
increasing is an intelligent solution to this problem.

8c82534d89 Default core.packdGitWindowSize to 1 MiB if NO_MMAP.
If the compiler has asked us to disable use of mmap() on their
platform then we are forced to use git_mmap and its emulation via
pread. In this case large (e.g. 32 MiB) windows for pack access
are simply too big as a command will wind up reading a lot more
data than it will ever need, significantly reducing response time.

To prevent a high latency when NO_MMAP has been selected we now
use a default of 1 MiB for core.packedGitWindowSize. Credit goes
to Linus and Junio for recommending this more reasonable setting.

Like the existing error() function the new warn() function can be

85023577a8 simplify inclusion of system header files.
This is a mechanical clean-up of the way *.c files include
system header files.

 (1) sources under compat/, platform sha-1 implementations, and
     xdelta code are exempt from the following rules;

 (2) the first #include must be "git-compat-util.h" or one of
     our own header file that includes it first (e.g. config.h,
     builtin.h, pkt-line.h);

 (3) system headers that are included in "git-compat-util.h"
     need not be included in individual C source files.

 (4) "git-compat-util.h" does not have to include subsystem
     specific header files (e.g. expat.h).
