The smudge/clean filter API expect an external process is spawned
to filter the contents for each path that has a filter defined. A
new type of "process" filter API has been added to allow the first
request to run the filter for a path to spawn a single process, and
all filtering need is served by this single process for multiple
paths, reducing the process creation overhead.

JGit can show a fake ref "capabilities^{}" to "git fetch" when it
does not advertise any refs, but "git fetch" was not prepared to
see such an advertisement. When the other side disconnects without
giving any ref advertisement, we used to say "there may not be a
repository at that URL", but we may have seen other advertisement
like "shallow" and ".have" in which case we definitely know that a
repository is there. The code to detect this case has also been
updated.

When cloning an empty repository served by standard git, "git clone" produces
the following reassuring message:
$ git clone git://localhost/tmp/empty
Cloning into 'empty'...
warning: You appear to have cloned an empty repository.
Checking connectivity... done.
Meanwhile when cloning an empty repository served by JGit, the output is more
haphazard:
$ git clone git://localhost/tmp/empty
Cloning into 'empty'...
Checking connectivity... done.
warning: remote HEAD refers to nonexistent ref, unable to checkout.
This is a common command to run immediately after creating a remote repository
as preparation for adding content to populate it and pushing. The warning is
confusing and needlessly worrying.
The cause is that, since v3.1.0.201309270735-rc1~22 (Advertise capabilities
with no refs in upload service., 2013-08-08), JGit's ref advertisement includes
a ref named capabilities^{} to advertise its capabilities on, while git's ref
advertisement is empty in this case. This allows the client to learn about the
server's capabilities and is needed, for example, for fetch-by-sha1 to work
when no refs are advertised.
This also affects "ls-remote". For example, against an empty repository served
by JGit:
$ git ls-remote git://localhost/tmp/empty
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000 capabilities^{}
Git advertises the same capabilities^{} ref in its ref advertisement for push
but since it never did so for fetch, the client didn't need to handle this
case. Handle it.

A server hanging up immediately to mark access being denied does not
send any .have refs, shallow lines, or anything else before hanging
up. If the server has sent anything, then the hangup is unexpected.
That is, if the server hangs up after a shallow line but before sending
any refs, then git should tell me so:
fatal: The remote end hung up upon initial contact
instead of suggesting an access control problem:
fatal: Could not read from remote repository.
Please make sure you have the correct access rights
and the repository exists.
Noticed while examining this code. This case isn't likely to come up
in practice but tightening the check makes the code easier to read and
manipulate.

The two alternative ways to spell "ssh://" transport have been
deprecated for a long time. The last mention of them has finally
removed from the documentation.

Disown ssh+git and git+ssh
Some people argue that these were silly from the beginning (see
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/285590/focus=285601
for example), but we have to support them for compatibility.
That doesn't mean we have to show them in the documentation. These
were already left out of the main list, but a reference in the main
manpage was left, so remove that.
Also add a note to discourage their use if anybody goes looking for them
in the source code.

Sometimes it is necessary to force IPv4-only or IPv6-only operation
on networks where name lookups may return a non-routable address and
stall remote operations.
The ssh(1) command has an equivalent switches which we may pass when
we run them. There may be old ssh(1) implementations out there
which do not support these switches; they should report the
appropriate error in that case.
rsync support is untouched for now since it is deprecated and
scheduled to be removed.

We sometimes sprintf into fixed-size buffers when we know
that the buffer is large enough to fit the input (either
because it's a constant, or because it's numeric input that
is bounded in size). Likewise with strcpy of constant
strings.
However, these sites make it hard to audit sprintf and
strcpy calls for buffer overflows, as a reader has to
cross-reference the size of the array with the input. Let's
use xsnprintf instead, which communicates to a reader that
we don't expect this to overflow (and catches the mistake in
case we do).

If we are cloning an untrusted remote repository into a
sandbox, we may also want to fetch remote submodules in
order to get the complete view as intended by the other
side. However, that opens us up to attacks where a malicious
user gets us to clone something they would not otherwise
have access to (this is not necessarily a problem by itself,
but we may then act on the cloned contents in a way that
exposes them to the attacker).
Ideally such a setup would sandbox git entirely away from
high-value items, but this is not always practical or easy
to set up (e.g., OS network controls may block multiple
protocols, and we would want to enable some but not others).
We can help this case by providing a way to restrict
particular protocols. We use a whitelist in the environment.
This is more annoying to set up than a blacklist, but
defaults to safety if the set of protocols git supports
grows). If no whitelist is specified, we continue to default
to allowing all protocols (this is an "unsafe" default, but
since the minority of users will want this sandboxing
effect, it is the only sensible one).
A note on the tests: ideally these would all be in a single
test file, but the git-daemon and httpd test infrastructure
is an all-or-nothing proposition rather than a test-by-test
prerequisite. By putting them all together, we would be
unable to test the file-local code on machines without
apache.

When executing user-specified programs, we generally always
want to use a shell, for flexibility and consistency. One
big exception is executing $GIT_SSH, which for historical
reasons must not use a shell.
Once upon a time the logic in git_connect looked like:
if (protocol == PROTO_SSH) {
... setup ssh ...
} else {
... setup local connection ...
conn->use_shell = 1;
}
But over time the PROTO_SSH block has grown, and the "local"
block has shrunk so that it contains only conn->use_shell;
it's easy to miss at the end of the large block. Moreover,
PROTO_SSH now also sometimes sets use_shell, when the new
GIT_SSH_COMMAND is used.
Let's just set conn->use_shell when we're setting up the "conn"
struct, and unset it (with a comment) in the historical GIT_SSH
case. This will make the flow easier to follow.

When we "switch" to another local repository to run the server
side of a fetch or push, we must clear the variables in
local_repo_env so that our local $GIT_DIR, etc, do not
pollute the upload-pack or receive-pack that is executing in
the "remote" repository.
We have never done so for ssh connections. For the most
part, nobody has noticed because ssh will not pass unknown
environment variables by default. However, it is not out of
the question for a user to configure ssh to pass along GIT_*
variables using SendEnv/AcceptEnv.
We can demonstrate the problem by using "git -c" on a local
command and seeing its impact on a remote repository. This
config ends up in $GIT_CONFIG_PARAMETERS. In the local case,
the config has no impact, but in the ssh transport, it does
(our test script has a fake ssh that passes through all
environment variables; this isn't normal, but does simulate
one possible setup).

The git_connect function has code to handle plink and tortoiseplink
specially, as they require different command line arguments from
OpenSSH (-P instead of -p for ports; tortoiseplink additionally requires
-batch). However, the match was done by checking for "plink" anywhere
in the string, which led to a GIT_SSH value containing "uplink" being
treated as an invocation of putty's plink.
Improve the check by looking for "plink" or "tortoiseplink" (or those
names suffixed with ".exe") only in the final component of the path.
This has the downside that a program such as "plink-0.63" would no
longer be recognized, but the increased robustness is likely worth it.
Add tests to cover these cases to avoid regressions.

The ssh:// syntax was added in 2386d658 (Add first cut at "git
protocol" connect logic., 2005-07-13), it accepted
ssh://user@2001:db8::1/repo.git, which is now legacy.
Over the years the parser was improved to support [] and port numbers,
but the combination of ssh://user@[2001:db8::1]:222/repo.git did
never work.
The only only way to use a user name, a literall IPV6 address and a port
number was ssh://[user@2001:db8::1]:222/repo.git
(Thanks to Christian Taube <lists@hcf.yourweb.de> for reporting this long
standing issue)
New users would use ssh://user@[2001:db8::1]:222/repo.git,
so change the parser to handle it correctly.
Support the old legacy URLs as well, to be backwards compatible,
and avoid regressions for users which upgrade an existing installation
to a later Git version.

When we connect to a git-daemon at a given host and port, we
actually send the string "localhost:9418" to the other side,
which allows it to do virtual-hosting lookups. For testing
and debugging, we'd like to be able to send arbitrary
strings, rather than the hostname we actually connected to.
Using "insteadOf" config does not work for this purpose, as
the hostname determination happens at a very low level,
right before we feed the hostname to our lookup routines.
You could use /etc/hosts or similar to get around this, but
we cannot do that portably from our test suite.
Instead, this patch provides an environment variable that
can be used to send an arbitrary string.

It may be impractical to install a wrapper script for GIT_SSH
when additional parameters need to be passed. Provide an alternative
way of specifying a shell command to be run, including command line
arguments, by means of the GIT_SSH_COMMAND environment variable,
which behaves like GIT_SSH but is passed to the shell.
The special circuitry to modify parameters in the case of using
PuTTY's plink/tortoiseplink is activated only when using GIT_SSH;
in the case of using GIT_SSH_COMMAND, it is deliberately left up to
the user to make any required parameters adaptation before calling
the underlying ssh implementation.

Most struct child_process variables are cleared using memset first after
declaration. Provide a macro, CHILD_PROCESS_INIT, that can be used to
initialize them statically instead. That's shorter, doesn't require a
function call and is slightly more readable (especially given that we
already have STRBUF_INIT, ARGV_ARRAY_INIT etc.).

Use xmemdupz() to allocate the memory, copy the data and make sure to
NUL-terminate the result, all in one step. The resulting code is
shorter, doesn't contain the constants 1 and '\0', and avoids
duplicating function parameters.
For blame, the last copied byte (o->file.ptr[o->file.size]) is always
set to NUL by fake_working_tree_commit() or read_sha1_file(), so no
information is lost by the conversion to using xmemdupz().

It's a common idiom to match a prefix and then skip past it
with a magic number, like:
if (starts_with(foo, "bar"))
foo += 3;
This is easy to get wrong, since you have to count the
prefix string yourself, and there's no compiler check if the
string changes. We can use skip_prefix to avoid the magic
numbers here.
Note that some of these conversions could be much shorter.
For example:
if (starts_with(arg, "--foo=")) {
bar = arg + 6;
continue;
}
could become:
if (skip_prefix(arg, "--foo=", &bar))
continue;
However, I have left it as:
if (skip_prefix(arg, "--foo=", &v)) {
bar = v;

to visually match nearby cases which need to actually
process the string. Like:

This avoids magic numbers when we allocate fixed-size argv
arrays, and makes it more obvious that we are not
overflowing.
It is also the first step to fixing a memory leak. When
git_connect returns a child_process struct, the argv array
in the struct is dynamically allocated, but the individual
strings are not (they are either owned elsewhere, or are
freed). Later, in finish_connect, we free the array but
leave the strings alone.
This works for the child_process created by git_connect, but
if we use transport_take_over, we may also end up with a
child_process created by transport-helper's get_helper.
In that case, the strings are freshly allocated, and we
would want to free them. However, we have no idea in
finish_connect which type we have.
By consistently using run-command's internal argv-array, we
do not have to worry about this issue at all; finish_command
takes care of it for us, and we can drop our manual free
entirely.
Note that this actually makes the get_helper leak slightly
worse; now we are leaking both the strings and the array.
But when we adjust it in a future patch, that leak will go
away entirely.

Make the function is_local() in transport.c public, rename it into
url_is_local_not_ssh() and use it in both transport.c and connect.c
Use a protocol "local" for URLs for the local file system.
One note about using file:// under Windows:
The (absolute) path on Unix like system typically starts with "/".
When the host is empty, it can be omitted, so that a shell scriptlet
url=file://$pwd
will give a URL like "file:///home/user/repo".
Windows does not have the same concept of a root directory located in "/".
When parsing the URL allow "file://C:/user/repo"
(even if RFC1738 indicates that "file:///C:/user/repo" should be used).

The documentation (in urls.txt) says that
"ssh://host:/~repo",
"host:/~repo" or
"host:~repo"
specify the repository "repo" in the home directory at "host".
This has not been working for "host:/~repo".
Before commit 356bec "Support [address] in URLs", the comparison
"url != hostname" could be used to determine if the URL had a scheme
or not: "ssh://host/host" != "host".
However, after 356bec "[::1]" was converted into "::1", yielding
url != hostname as well. To fix this regression, don't use
"if (url != hostname)", but look at the separator instead.
Rename the variable "c" into "separator" to make it easier to read.

The main purpose is to trace the URL parser called by git_connect() in
connect.c
The main features of the parser can be listed as this:
- parse out host and path for URLs with a scheme (git:// file:// ssh://)
- parse host names embedded by [] correctly
- extract the port number, if present
- separate URLs like "file" (which are local)
from URLs like "host:repo" which should use ssh
Add the new parameter "--diag-url" to "git fetch-pack", which prints
the value for protocol, host and path to stderr and exits.

Since day one, function git_connect() had a limit on the command line of
the command that is invoked to make a connection. 7a33bcbe converted the
code that constructs the command to strbuf. This would have been the
right time to remove the limit, but it did not happen. Remove it now.
git_connect() uses start_command() to invoke the command; consequently,
the limits of the system still apply, but are diagnosed only at execve()
time. But these limits are more lenient than the 1K that git_connect()
imposed.

One long-standing flaw in the pack transfer protocol used by "git
clone" was that there was no way to tell the other end which branch
"HEAD" points at, and the receiving end needed to guess. A new
capability has been defined in the pack protocol to convey this
information so that cloning from a repository with more than one
branches pointing at the same commit where the HEAD is at now
reliably sets the initial branch in the resulting repository.

commit 6000334 (clone: allow cloning local paths with colons in them -
2013-05-04) made it possible to specify a path that has colons in it
without file://, e.g. ../foo:bar/somewhere. But the check was a bit
sloppy.
Consider the url '[foo]:bar'. The '[]' unwrapping code will turn the
string to 'foo\0:bar'. In effect this new string is the same as
'foo/:bar' in the check "path < strchrnul(host, '/')", which mistakes
it for a local path (with '/' before the first ':') when it's actually
not.
So disable the check for '/' before ':' when the URL has been mangled
by '[]' unwrapping.

By doing this, clients of upload-pack can now reliably tell what ref
a symbolic ref points at; the updated test in t5505 used to expect
failure due to the ambiguity and made sure we give diagnostics, but
we no longer need to be so pessimistic. Make sure we correctly learn
which branch HEAD points at from the other side instead.

The definition of "struct ref" in "cache.h", a header file so
central to the system, always confused me. This structure is not
about the local ref used by sha1-name API to name local objects.
It is what refspecs are expanded into, after finding out what refs
the other side has, to define what refs are updated after object
transfer succeeds to what values. It belongs to "remote.h" together
with "struct refspec".
While we are at it, also move the types and functions related to the
Git transport connection to a new header file connect.h

"git clone foo/bar:baz" cannot be a request to clone from a remote
over git-over-ssh specified in the scp style. Detect this case and
clone from a local repository at "foo/bar:baz".
* nd/clone-local-with-colon:
clone: allow cloning local paths with colons in them
Usually "foo:bar" is interpreted as an ssh url. This patch allows to
clone from such paths by putting at least one slash before the colon
(i.e. /path/to/foo:bar or just ./foo:bar).
file://foo:bar should also work, but local optimizations are off in
that case, which may be unwanted. While at there, warn the users about
--local being ignored in this case.

The packet_read function reads from a descriptor. The
packet_get_line function is similar, but reads from an
in-memory buffer, and uses a completely separate
implementation. This patch teaches the generic packet_read
function to accept either source, and we can do away with
packet_get_line's implementation.
There are two other differences to account for between the
old and new functions. The first is that we used to read
into a strbuf, but now read into a fixed size buffer. The
only two callers are fine with that, and in fact it
simplifies their code, since they can use the same
static-buffer interface as the rest of the packet_read_line
callers (and we provide a similar convenience wrapper for
reading from a buffer rather than a descriptor).
This is technically an externally-visible behavior change in
that we used to accept arbitrary sized packets up to 65532
bytes, and now cap out at LARGE_PACKET_MAX, 65520. In
practice this doesn't matter, as we use it only for parsing
smart-http headers (of which there is exactly one defined,
and it is small and fixed-size). And any extension headers
would be breaking the protocol to go over LARGE_PACKET_MAX
anyway.
The other difference is that packet_get_line would return
on error rather than dying. However, both callers of
packet_get_line are actually improved by dying.
The first caller does its own error checking, but we can
drop that; as a result, we'll actually get more specific
reporting about protocol breakage when packet_read dies
internally. The only downside is that packet_read will not
print the smart-http URL that failed, but that's not a big
deal; anybody not debugging can already see the remote's URL
already, and anybody debugging would want to run with
GIT_CURL_VERBOSE anyway to see way more information.
The second caller, which is just trying to skip past any
extra smart-http headers (of which there are none defined,
but which we allow to keep room for future expansion), did
not error check at all. As a result, it would treat an error
just like a flush packet. The resulting mess would generally
cause an error later in get_remote_heads, but now we get
error reporting much closer to the source of the problem.

Most of the callers of packet_read_line just read into a
static 1000-byte buffer (callers which handle arbitrary
binary data already use LARGE_PACKET_MAX). This works fine
in practice, because:
1. The only variable-sized data in these lines is a ref
name, and refs tend to be a lot shorter than 1000
characters.
2. When sending ref lines, git-core always limits itself
to 1000 byte packets.
However, the only limit given in the protocol specification
in Documentation/technical/protocol-common.txt is
LARGE_PACKET_MAX; the 1000 byte limit is mentioned only in
pack-protocol.txt, and then only describing what we write,
not as a specific limit for readers.
This patch lets us bump the 1000-byte limit to
LARGE_PACKET_MAX. Even though git-core will never write a
packet where this makes a difference, there are two good
reasons to do this:
1. Other git implementations may have followed
protocol-common.txt and used a larger maximum size. We
don't bump into it in practice because it would involve
very long ref names.
2. We may want to increase the 1000-byte limit one day.
Since packets are transferred before any capabilities,
it's difficult to do this in a backwards-compatible
way. But if we bump the size of buffer the readers can
handle, eventually older versions of git will be
obsolete enough that we can justify bumping the
writers, as well. We don't have plans to do this
anytime soon, but there is no reason not to start the
clock ticking now.
Just bumping all of the reading bufs to LARGE_PACKET_MAX
would waste memory. Instead, since most readers just read
into a temporary buffer anyway, let's provide a single
static buffer that all callers can use. We can further wrap
this detail away by having the packet_read_line wrapper just
use the buffer transparently and return a pointer to the
static storage. That covers most of the cases, and the
remaining ones already read into their own LARGE_PACKET_MAX
buffers.

The packets sent during ref negotiation are all terminated
by newline; even though the code to chomp these newlines is
short, we end up doing it in a lot of places.
This patch teaches packet_read_line to auto-chomp the
trailing newline; this lets us get rid of a lot of inline
chomping code.
As a result, some call-sites which are not reading
line-oriented data (e.g., when reading chunks of packfiles
alongside sideband) transition away from packet_read_line to
the generic packet_read interface. This patch converts all
of the existing callsites.
Since the function signature of packet_read_line does not
change (but its behavior does), there is a possibility of
new callsites being introduced in later commits, silently
introducing an incompatibility. However, since a later
patch in this series will change the signature, such a
commit would have to be merged directly into this commit,
not to the tip of the series; we can therefore ignore the
issue.
This is an internal cleanup and should produce no change of
behavior in the normal case. However, there is one corner
case to note. Callers of packet_read_line have never been
able to tell the difference between a flush packet ("0000")
and an empty packet ("0004"), as both cause packet_read_line
to return a length of 0. Readers treat them identically,
even though Documentation/technical/protocol-common.txt says
we must not; it also says that implementations should not
send an empty pkt-line.
By stripping out the newline before the result gets to the
caller, we will now treat the newline-only packet ("0005\n")
the same as an empty packet, which in turn gets treated like
a flush packet. In practice this doesn't matter, as neither
empty nor newline-only packets are part of git's protocols
(at least not for the line-oriented bits, and readers who
are not expecting line-oriented packets will be calling
packet_read directly, anyway). But even if we do decide to
care about the distinction later, it is orthogonal to this
patch. The right place to tighten would be to stop treating
empty packets as flush packets, and this change does not
make doing so any harder.

Originally we had a single function for reading packetized
data: packet_read_line. Commit 46284dd grew a more "gentle"
form, packet_read, that returns an error instead of dying
upon reading a truncated input stream. However, it is not
clear from the names which should be called, or what the
difference is.
Let's instead make packet_read be a generic public interface
that can take option flags, and update the single callsite
that uses it. This is less code, more clear, and paves the
way for introducing more options into the generic interface
later. The function signature is changed, so there should be
no hidden conflicts with topics in flight.
While we're at it, we'll document how error conditions are
handled based on the options, and rename the confusing
"return_line_fail" option to "gentle_on_eof". While we are
cleaning up the names, we can drop the "return_line_fail"
checks in packet_read_internal entirely. They look like
this:

only ever return an error value if return_line_fail was true

Some capabilities were asked by fetch-pack even when upload-pack did
not advertise that they are available. Fix fetch-pack not to do so.

We already take care to parse key/value capabilities like
"foo=bar", but the code does not provide a good way of
actually finding out what is on the right-hand side of the
"=".
A server using "parse_feature_request" could accomplish this
with some extra parsing. You must skip past the "key"
portion manually, check for "=" versus NUL or space, and
then find the length by searching for the next space (or
NUL). But clients can't even do that, since the
"server_supports" interface does not even return the
pointer.
Instead, let's have our parser share more information by
providing a pointer to the value and its length. The
"parse_feature_value" function returns a pointer to the
feature's value portion, along with the length of the value.
If the feature is missing, NULL is returned. If it does not
have an "=", then a zero-length value is returned.
Similarly, "server_feature_value" behaves in the same way,
but always checks the static server_feature_list variable.
We can then implement "server_supports" in terms of
"server_feature_value". We cannot implement the original
"parse_feature_request" in terms of our new function,
because it returned a pointer to the beginning of the
feature. However, no callers actually cared about the value
of the returned pointer, so we can simplify it to a boolean
just as we do for "server_supports".

When we get disconnected while expecting a response from the remote
side because authentication failed, we issued an error message "The
remote side hung up unexpectedly."
Give hint that it may be a permission problem in the message when we
can reasonably suspect it.

If a server accessed through ssh is denying access git will currently
issue the message
"fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly"
as the last line. This sounds as if something really ugly just happened.
Since this is a quite typical situation in which users regularly get
we do not say that if it happens at the beginning when reading the
remote heads.
If its in the very first beginning of reading the remote heads it is
very likely an authentication error or a missing repository.
If it happens later during reading the remote heads we still indicate
that it happened during this initial contact phase.

If we encounter an address part shaped like "[HOST]:PORT", we skip the opening
bracket and replace the closing one with a NUL. The variable host then points
to HOST and we've cut off the PORT part. Thus, when we go looking for it using
host a bit later, we can't find it. Start at end instead, which either points
to the colon, if present, or is equal to host.

We have been carefully choosing feature names used in the protocol
extensions so that the vocabulary does not contain a word that is a
substring of another word, so it is not a real problem, but we have
recently added "quiet" feature word, which would mean we cannot later
add some other word with "quiet" (e.g. "quiet-push"), which is awkward.
Let's make sure that we can eventually be able to do so by teaching the
clients and servers that feature words consist of non whitespace
letters. This parser also allows us to later add features with parameters
e.g. "feature=1.5" (parameter values need to be quoted for whitespaces,
but we will worry about the detauls when we do introduce them).

The get_remote_heads function reads the list of remote refs
during git protocol session. It dates all the way back to
def88e9 (Commit first cut at "git-fetch-pack", 2005-07-04).
At that time, the idea was to come up with a list of refs we
were interested in, and then filter the list as we got it
from the remote side.
Later, 1baaae5 (Make maximal use of the remote refs,
2005-10-28) stopped filtering at the get_remote_heads layer,
letting us use the non-matching refs to find common history.
As a result, all callers now simply pass an empty match
list (and any future callers will want to do the same). So
let's drop these now-useless parameters.

Sockets may never receive notification of some link errors,
causing "git fetch" or similar processes to hang forever.
Enabling keepalive messages allows hung processes to error out
after a few minutes/hours depending on the keepalive settings of
the system.
This is a problem noticed when running non-interactive
cronjobs to mirror repositories using "git fetch".

Change check_ref_format() to take a flags argument that indicates what
is acceptable in the reference name (analogous to "git
check-ref-format"'s "--allow-onelevel" and "--refspec-pattern"). This
is more convenient for callers and also fixes a failure in the test
suite (and likely elsewhere in the code) by enabling "onelevel" and
"refspec-pattern" to be allowed independently of each other.
Also rename check_ref_format() to check_refname_format() to make it
obvious that it deals with refnames rather than references themselves.

In 63a995b (Do not log unless all connect() attempts fail), a
mechanism to only log connection errors if all attempts failed
was introduced for the IPv6 code-path, but not for the IPv4 one.
Introduce a matching mechanism so IPv4-users also benefit from
this noise-reduction.
Move the call to socket after filling in sa, to make it more
apparent that errno can't change in between.

In ba50532, the variable 'cnt' was added to both the IPv6 and the
IPv4 version of git_tcp_connect_sock, intended to identify which
network adapter the connection failed on. But in the IPv6 version,
the variable was never increased, leaving it constantly at zero.
This behaviour isn't very useful, so let's fix it by increasing
the variable at every loop-iteration.

IPv6 hosts are often unreachable on the primarily IPv4 Internet and
therefore we shouldn't print an error if there are still other hosts we
can try to connect() to. This helps "git fetch --quiet" stay quiet.

The git_connect function returns two ends of a pipe for
talking with a remote, plus a struct child_process
representing the other end of the pipe. If we have a direct
socket connection, then this points to a special "no_fork"
child process.
The code path for doing git-over-pipes or git-over-ssh sets
up this child process to point to the child git command or
the ssh process. When we call finish_connect eventually, we
check wait() on the command and report its return value.
The code path for git://, on the other hand, always sets it
to no_fork. In the case of a direct TCP connection, this
makes sense; we have no child process. But in the case of a
proxy command (configured by core.gitproxy), we do have a
child process, but we throw away its pid, and therefore
ignore its return code.
Instead, let's keep that information in the proxy case, and
respect its return code, which can help catch some errors
(though depending on your proxy command, it will be errors
reported by the proxy command itself, and not propagated
from git commands. Still, it is probably better to propagate
such errors than to ignore them).
It also means that the child_process field can reliably be
used to determine whether the returned descriptors are
actually a full-duplex socket, which means we should be
using shutdown() instead of a simple close.

Without this patch at least IBM VisualAge C 5.0 (I have 5.0.2) on AIX
5.1 fails to compile git.
enum style is inconsistent already, with some enums declared on one
line, some over 3 lines with the enum values all on the middle line,
sometimes with 1 enum value per line... and independently of that the
trailing comma is sometimes present and other times absent, often
mixing with/without trailing comma styles in a single file, and
sometimes in consecutive enum declarations.
Clearly, omitting the comma is the more portable style, and this patch
changes all enum declarations to use the portable omitted dangling
comma style consistently.

We generally treat these as equivalent to "/path/to/repo"
and "host:path_to_repo" respectively. However, they are URLs
and as such may be percent-encoded. The current code simply
uses them as-is without any decoding.
With this patch, we will now percent-decode any file:// or
ssh:// url (or ssh+git, git+ssh, etc) at the transport
layer. We continue to treat plain paths and "host:path"
syntax literally.

git tries to read a password from the terminal in imap-send and
when talking to a http server that requires authentication.
When a GUI is driving git, however, the end user is not paying
attention to the terminal (there may not even be a terminal).
GUI would appear to hang forever.
Fix this problem by allowing a password-retrieving command
to be specified in GIT_ASKPASS

Move the list of GIT_* environment variables that are local to a
repository into a static list in environment.c, as it is also
useful elsewhere. Also add the missing GIT_CONFIG variable to the
list.
Make it easy to use the list both by NULL-termination and by size;
the latter (excluding the terminating NULL) is stored in the
local_repo_env_size define.

Allow using "["<host>"]":<port> and "["<host>"]" notations in git://
host addresses. This is needed to be able to connect to addresses
that contain ':' (e.g. numeric IPv6 addresses). Also send the host
header []-wrapped so it can actually be parsed by remote end.

now be aware that they must not read replace refs.

In 41cb7488 Linus moved this function to connect.c for reuse inside
of the git-clone-pack command. That was 2005, but in 2006 Junio
retired git-clone-pack in commit efc7fa53. Since then the only
caller has been fetch-pack. Since this ACK/NAK exchange is only
used by the fetch-pack/upload-pack protocol we should move it back
to be a private detail of fetch-pack.

There are a few remaining ones, but this fixes the trivial ones. It boils
down to two main issues that sparse complains about:
- warning: Using plain integer as NULL pointer
Sparse doesn't like you using '0' instead of 'NULL'. For various good
reasons, not the least of which is just the visual confusion. A NULL
pointer is not an integer, and that whole "0 works as NULL" is a
historical accident and not very pretty.
A few of these remain: zlib is a total mess, and Z_NULL is just a 0.
I didn't touch those.
- warning: symbol 'xyz' was not declared. Should it be static?
Sparse wants to see declarations for any functions you export. A lack
of a declaration tends to mean that you should either add one, or you
should mark the function 'static' to show that it's in file scope.
A few of these remain: I only did the ones that should obviously just
be made static.
That 'wt_status_submodule_summary' one is debatable. It has a few related
flags (like 'wt_status_use_color') which _are_ declared, and are used by
builtin-commit.c. So maybe we'd like to export it at some point, but it's
not declared now, and not used outside of that file, so 'static' it is in
this patch.

Since 1.4.4.5 (49ba83fb67 "Add virtualization support to git-daemon")
git daemon enters an infinite loop and never terminates if a client
hides any extra arguments in the initial request line which is not
exactly "\0host=blah\0".
Since that change, a client must never insert additional extra
arguments, or attempt to use any argument other than "host=", as
any daemon will get stuck parsing the request line and will never
complete the request.
Since the client can't tell if the daemon is patched or not, it
is not possible to know if additional extra args might actually be
able to be safely requested.
If we ever need to extend the git daemon protocol to support a new
feature, we may have to do something like this to the exchange:

This requires the client to create two TCP connections to talk to
an older git daemon, however all daemons since the introduction of
daemon.c will safely reject the unknown "git://v2" command request,
so the client can quite easily determine the server supports an
older protocol.

OpenSSH uses -p to specify custom ports, while PuTTY plink and
TortoisePlink use -P. Git now detects if plink is in GIT_SSH and
modify its flags as necessary.
We call plink with -batch, so that it will error out with an error
message instead of waiting for user input. As reported in msysGit
issue 96, plink wants to interact with the user asking if a host
key should be accepted, but this just blocks the terminal, since
plink tries to get the answer from stdin. However, stdin is
already connected to Git that wants to send input to the remote
command.
But we do not pass -batch to TortoisePlink, because TortoisePlink
uses a GUI to communicate with the user, and it does not understand
-batch.

inet_ntop is not protocol independent.
getnameinfo(3) is part of POSIX and is available when getaddrinfo(3) is.
This code is only compiled when NO_IPV6 isn't defined.
The old method was buggy anyway, not every ipv6 address was converted
properly because the buffer (addr) was too small.

Since ef90d6d (Provide git_config with a callback-data parameter,
2008-05-14), git_config() takes a callback data pointer that can be
used to pass extra parameters to the parsing function. The codepath
to parse configuration variables related to git proxy predates this
facility and used a pair of file scope static variables instead.
This patch removes the need for these global variables by passing the
name of the host we are trying to access as the callback data.

In addition to checking if the provided port is numeric, also check
that the string isn't empty and that the port number is within the
valid range. Incidentally, this silences a compiler warning about
ignoring strtol's return value.

The current behavior of git-daemon is to simply close the connection on
any error condition. This leaves the client without any information as
to the cause of the failed fetch/push/etc.
This patch allows get_remote_heads to accept a line prefixed with "ERR"
that it can display to the user in an informative fashion. Once clients
can understand this ERR line, git-daemon can be made to properly report
"repository not found", "permission denied", or other errors.

With all calls to alloc_ref() gone, we can remove it and then we're free
to give alloc_ref_from_str() the shorter name. It's a much nicer
interface, as the callers always need to have a name string when they
allocate a ref anyway and don't need to calculate and pass its length+1
any more.

Replace pairs of alloc_ref() and strcpy() with alloc_ref_from_str(),
simplifying the code.
In connect.c, also a pair of alloc_ref() and memcpy() is replaced --
the additional cost of a strlen() call should not have too much of an
impact. Consistency and simplicity are more important.
In remote.c, the code was allocating 11 bytes more than needed for
the name part, but I couldn't see them being used for anything.

"git push" enhancement allows the receiving end to report not only its own
refs but refs in repositories it borrows from via the alternate object
store mechanism. By telling the sender that objects reachable from these
extra refs are already complete in the receiving end, the number of
objects that need to be transfered can be cut down.
These entries are sent over the wire with string ".have", instead of the
actual names of the refs. This string was chosen so that they are ignored
by older programs at the sending end. If we sent some random but valid
looking refnames for these entries, "matching refs" rule (triggered when
running "git push" without explicit refspecs, where the sender learns what
refs the receiver has, and updates only the ones with the names of the
refs the sender also has) and "delete missing" rule (triggered when "git
push --mirror" is used, where the sender tells the receiver to delete the
refs it itself does not have) would try to update/delete them, which is
not what we want.
This prepares the send-pack (and "push" that runs native protocol) to
accept extended existing ref information and make use of it. The ".have"
entries are excluded from ref matching rules, and are exempt from deletion
rule while pushing with --mirror option, but are still used for pack
generation purposes by providing more "bottom" range commits.

If on Windows a path is specified as C:/path, then this is also a valid
SSH URL. To disambiguate between the two interpretations we take an URL
that looks like a path with a drive letter as a local URL.

git_config() only had a function parameter, but no callback data
parameter. This assumes that all callback functions only modify
global variables.
With this patch, every callback gets a void * parameter, and it is hoped
that this will help the libification effort.

This change removes all obvious useless if-before-free tests.
E.g., it replaces code like this:
if (some_expression)
free (some_expression);
with the now-equivalent:
free (some_expression);
It is equivalent not just because POSIX has required free(NULL)
to work for a long time, but simply because it has worked for
so long that no reasonable porting target fails the test.

In ba227857(Reduce the number of connects when fetching), we checked
the return value of git_connect() to see if the connection was
successful.
However, for the git:// protocol, there is no need to have another
process, so the return value was NULL.
Now, it makes sense to assume the rule that git_connect() will return
NULL if it fails (at the moment, it die()s if it fails), so return
a dummy child process.

The list of remote refs in struct transport should be const, because
builtin-fetch will get confused if it changes.
The url in git_connect should be const (and work on a copy) instead of
requiring the caller to copy it.
match_refs doesn't modify the refspecs it gets.
get_fetch_map and get_remote_ref don't change the list they get.
Allow transport get_refs_list methods to modify the struct transport.
Add a function to copy a list of refs, when a function needs a mutable
copy of a const list.
Add a function to check the type of a ref, as per the code in connect.c

This prepares the API of git_connect() and finish_connect() to operate on
a struct child_process. Currently, we just use that object as a placeholder
for the pid that we used to return. A follow-up patch will change the
implementation of git_connect() and finish_connect() to make full use
of the object.
Old code had early-return-on-error checks at the calling sites of
git_connect(), but since git_connect() dies on errors anyway, these checks
were removed.

Currently alloc_ref() expects the length of the refname plus 1
as its parameter, prepares that much space and returns a "ref"
structure for the caller to fill the refname. One caller in
transport.c::get_refs_from_bundle() however allocated one byte
less.
It may be a good idea to change the calling convention to give
alloc_ref() the length of the refname, but that clean-up can be
done in a separate patch. This patch only fixes the bug and
makes all callers consistent.
There was also one overallocation in connect.c, which would not
hurt but was wasteful. This patch fixes it as well.

We might make it something like: "if you use an url, we don't default to
local", so the difference would be that
git clone file:///directory/to/repo
would work the way it does now, but
git clone /directory/to/repo
would default to "-l" behaviour. That kind of would make sense (and should
be easy to implement.
This adds support for "file://" URL to underlying connect
codepath to make it happen.
