9081a421a6 checkout: fix "branch info" memory leaks
The "checkout" command is one of the main sources of leaks in the test
suite, let's fix the common ones by not leaking from the "struct
branch_info".

Doing this is rather straightforward, albeit verbose, we need to
xstrdup() constant strings going into the struct, and free() the ones
we clobber as we go along.

This also means that we can delete previous partial leak fixes in this
area, i.e. the "path_to_free" accounting added by 96ec7b1e70 (Convert
resolve_ref+xstrdup to new resolve_refdup function, 2011-12-13).

There was some discussion about whether "we should retain the "const
char *" here and cast at free() time, or have it be a "char *". Since
this is not a public API with any sort of API boundary let's use
"char *", as is already being done for the "refname" member of the
same struct.

The tests to mark as passing were found with:

    rm .prove; GIT_SKIP_TESTS=t0027 prove -j8 --state=save t[0-9]*.sh :: --immediate
    # apply & compile this change
    prove -j8 --state=failed :: --immediate

I.e. the ones that were newly passing when the --state=failed command
was run. I left out "t3040-subprojects-basic.sh" and
"t4131-apply-fake-ancestor.sh" to to optimization-level related
differences similar to the ones noted in[1], except that these would
be something the current 'linux-leaks' job would run into.

883b98efad t2*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"
Carefully excluding t2106, which sees independent development elsewhere
at the time of writing, we transition above-mentioned tests to the
default branch name `main`. This trick was performed via

	$ (cd t &&
	   sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
		-e 's/Master/Main/g' -- t2*.sh &&
	   git checkout HEAD -- t2106\*)

This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

334afbc76f tests: mark tests relying on the current default for init.defaultBranch
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.

To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in

- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,

- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
  initialize the default branch,

- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,

- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
  uses `master`)

This trick was performed by this command:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
	t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh

After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

	$ git checkout HEAD -- \
		t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
		t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \
		t/t1305-config-include.sh t/t1309-early-config.sh \
		t/t1402-check-ref-format.sh t/t1450-fsck.sh \
		t/t2024-checkout-dwim.sh \
		t/t2106-update-index-assume-unchanged.sh \
		t/t3040-subprojects-basic.sh t/t3301-notes.sh \
		t/t3308-notes-merge.sh t/t3423-rebase-reword.sh \
		t/t3436-rebase-more-options.sh \
		t/t4015-diff-whitespace.sh t/t4257-am-interactive.sh \
		t/t5323-pack-redundant.sh t/t5401-update-hooks.sh \
		t/t5511-refspec.sh t/t5526-fetch-submodules.sh \
		t/t5529-push-errors.sh t/t5530-upload-pack-error.sh \
		t/t5548-push-porcelain.sh \
		t/t5552-skipping-fetch-negotiator.sh \
		t/t5572-pull-submodule.sh t/t5608-clone-2gb.sh \
		t/t5614-clone-submodules-shallow.sh \
		t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
		t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

8125a58b91 t: switch $_z40 to $ZERO_OID
Switch all uses of $_z40 to $ZERO_OID so that they work correctly with
larger hashes. This commit was created by using the following sed
command to modify all files in the t directory except t/test-lib.sh:

  sed -i 's/\$_z40/$ZERO_OID/g'

2859dcd4c8 lock_ref_sha1_basic: handle REF_NODEREF with invalid refs
We sometimes call lock_ref_sha1_basic with REF_NODEREF
to operate directly on a symbolic ref. This is used, for
example, to move to a detached HEAD, or when updating
the contents of HEAD via checkout or symbolic-ref.

However, the first step of the function is to resolve the
refname to get the "old" sha1, and we do so without telling
resolve_ref_unsafe() that we are only interested in the
symref. As a result, we may detect a problem there not with
the symref itself, but with something it points to.

The real-world example I found (and what is used in the test
suite) is a HEAD pointing to a ref that cannot exist,
because it would cause a directory/file conflict with other
existing refs. This situation is somewhat broken, of
course, as trying to _commit_ on that HEAD would fail. But
it's not explicitly forbidden, and we should be able to move
away from it. However, neither "git checkout" nor "git
symbolic-ref" can do so. We try to take the lock on HEAD,
which is pointing to a non-existent ref. We bail from
resolve_ref_unsafe() with errno set to EISDIR, and the lock
code thinks we are attempting to create a d/f conflict.

Of course we're not. The problem is that the lock code has
no idea what level we were at when we got EISDIR, so trying
to diagnose or remove empty directories for HEAD is not
useful.

To make things even more complicated, we only get EISDIR in
the loose-ref case. If the refs are packed, the resolution
may "succeed", giving us the pointed-to ref in "refname",
but a null oid. Later, we say "ah, the null oid means we are
creating; let's make sure there is room for it", but
mistakenly check against the _resolved_ refname, not the
original.

We can fix this by making two tweaks:

  1. Call resolve_ref_unsafe() with RESOLVE_REF_NO_RECURSE
     when REF_NODEREF is set. This means any errors
     we get will be from the orig_refname, and we can act
     accordingly.

     We already do this in the REF_DELETING case, but we
     should do it for update, too.

  2. If we do get a "refname" return from
     resolve_ref_unsafe(), even with RESOLVE_REF_NO_RECURSE
     it may be the name of the ref pointed-to by a symref.
     We already normalize this back to orig_refname before
     taking the lockfile, but we need to do so before the
     null_oid check.

While we're rearranging the REF_NODEREF handling, we can
also bump the initialization of lflags to the top of the
function, where we are setting up other flags. This saves us
from having yet another conditional block on REF_NODEREF
just to set it later.

4be49d7568 checkout,clone: check return value of create_symref
It's unlikely that we would fail to create or update a
symbolic ref (especially HEAD), but if we do, we should
notice and complain. Note that there's no need to give more
details in our error message; create_symref will already
have done so.

While we're here, let's also fix a minor memory leak in
clone.

3442ea4a75 git checkout: do not allow switching to a tree-ish that is not a commit
"git checkout -b newbranch $commit^{tree}" mistakenly created a new branch
rooted at the current HEAD, because in that case, the two structure fields
used to see if the command was invoked without any argument (hence it
needs to default to checking out the HEAD) were populated incorrectly.

Upon seeing a command line argument that we took as a rev, we should store
that string in new.name, even if that does not name a commit. This will
correctly trigger the existing safety logic.

323e00fd46 checkout: Don't crash when switching away from an invalid branch.
When using alternates, it is possible for HEAD to end up pointing to
an invalid commit. git checkout should be able to recover from that
situation without crashing.
