c2bc6e6ab0 commit-graph: create options for split files
The split commit-graph feature is now fully implemented, but needs
some more run-time configurability. Allow direct callers to 'git
commit-graph write --split' to specify the values used in the
merge strategy and the expire time.

Update the documentation to specify these values.

8d84097f96 commit-graph: expire commit-graph files
As we merge commit-graph files in a commit-graph chain, we should clean
up the files that are no longer used.

This change introduces an 'expiry_window' value to the context, which is
always zero (for now). We then check the modified time of each
graph-{hash}.graph file in the $OBJDIR/info/commit-graphs folder and
unlink the files that are older than the expiry_window.

Since this is always zero, this immediately clears all unused graph
files. We will update the value to match a config setting in a future
change.

c523035cbd commit-graph: allow cross-alternate chains
In an environment like a fork network, it is helpful to have a
commit-graph chain that spans both the base repo and the fork repo. The
fork is usually a small set of data on top of the large repo, but
sometimes the fork is much larger. For example, git-for-windows/git has
almost double the number of commits as git/git because it rebases its
commits on every major version update.

To allow cross-alternate commit-graph chains, we need a few pieces:

1. When looking for a graph-{hash}.graph file, check all alternates.

2. When merging commit-graph chains, do not merge across alternates.

3. When writing a new commit-graph chain based on a commit-graph file
in another object directory, do not allow success if the base file
has of the name "commit-graph" instead of
   "commit-graphs/graph-{hash}.graph".

1771be90c8 commit-graph: merge commit-graph chains
When searching for a commit in a commit-graph chain of G graphs with N
commits, the search takes O(G log N) time. If we always add a new tip
graph with every write, the linear G term will start to dominate and
slow the lookup process.

To keep lookups fast, but also keep most incremental writes fast, create
a strategy for merging levels of the commit-graph chain. The strategy is
detailed in the commit-graph design document, but is summarized by these
two conditions:

  1. If the number of commits we are adding is more than half the number
of commits in the graph below, then merge with that graph.

  2. If we are writing more than 64,000 commits into a single graph,
then merge with all lower graphs.

The numeric values in the conditions above are currently constant, but
can become config options in a future update.

As we merge levels of the commit-graph chain, check that the commits
still exist in the repository. A garbage-collection operation may have
removed those commits from the object store and we do not want to
persist them in the commit-graph chain. This is a non-issue if the
'git gc' process wrote a new, single-level commit-graph file.

After we merge levels, the old graph-{hash}.graph files are no longer
referenced by the commit-graph-chain file. We will expire these files in
a future change.

118bd57002 commit-graph: add base graphs chunk
To quickly verify a commit-graph chain is valid on load, we will
read from the new "Base Graphs Chunk" of each file in the chain.
This will prevent accidentally loading incorrect data from manually
editing the commit-graph-chain file or renaming graph-{hash}.graph
files.

The commit_graph struct already had an object_id struct "oid", but
it was never initialized or used. Add a line to read the hash from
the end of the commit-graph file and into the oid member.

10bd0be173 commit-graph: remove Future Work section
The commit-graph feature began with a long list of planned
benefits, most of which are now complete. The future work
section has only a few items left.

As for making more algorithms aware of generation numbers,
some are only waiting for generation number v2 to ensure the
performance matches the existing behavior using commit date.

It is unlikely that we will ever send a commit-graph file
as part of the protocol, since we would need to verify the
data, and that is expensive. If we want to start trusting
remote content, then that item can be investigated again.

While there is more work to be done on the feature, having
a section of the docs devoted to a TODO list is wasteful and
hard to keep up-to-date.

e4b75d6a1d trace2: rename environment variables to GIT_TRACE2*
For an environment variable that is supposed to be set by users, the
GIT_TR2* env vars are just too unclear, inconsistent, and ugly.

Most of the established GIT_* environment variables don't use
abbreviations, and in case of the few that do (GIT_DIR,
GIT_COMMON_DIR, GIT_DIFF_OPTS) it's quite obvious what the
abbreviations (DIR and OPTS) stand for. But what does TR stand for?
Track, traditional, trailer, transaction, transfer, transformation,
transition, translation, transplant, transport, traversal, tree,
trigger, truncate, trust, or ...?!

The trace2 facility, as the '2' suffix in its name suggests, is
supposed to eventually supercede Git's original trace facility. It's
reasonable to expect that the corresponding environment variables
follow suit, and after the original GIT_TRACE variables they are
called GIT_TRACE2; there is no such thing is 'GIT_TR'.

All trace2-specific config variables are, very sensibly, in the
'trace2' section, not in 'tr2'.

OTOH, we don't gain anything at all by omitting the last three
characters of "trace" from the names of these environment variables.

So let's rename all GIT_TR2* environment variables to GIT_TRACE2*,
before they make their way into a stable release.

b373e4d29b Documentation/technical/protocol-v2.txt: fix formatting
Asciidoctor versions v1.5.7 or later print the following warning while
building the documentation:

      ASCIIDOC technical/protocol-v2.html
asciidoctor: WARNING: protocol-v2.txt: line 38: unterminated listing block

This highlights an issue (even with older Asciidoctor versions) where
the 'Initial Client Request' header is not rendered as a header but in
monospace. I'm not sure what exactly causes this issue and why it's
an issue only with this particular header, but all headers in
'protocol-v2.txt' are written like this:

   Initial Client Request
  ------------------------

i.e. the header itself is indented by a space, and the "underline" is
two characters longer than the header.

Dropping that indentation and making the length of the underline match
the length of the header apparently fixes this issue.

While at it, adjust all other headers 'protocol-v2.txt' as well, to
match the style we use everywhere else.

The page rendered with AsciiDoc doesn't have this formatting issue.

a4d3a283db trace2: write to directory targets
When the value of a trace2 environment variable is an absolute path
referring to an existing directory, write output to files (one per
process) underneath the given directory. Files will be named according
to the final component of the trace2 SID, followed by a counter to avoid
potential collisions.

This makes it more convenient to collect traces for every git invocation
by unconditionally setting the relevant trace2 envvar to a constant
directory name.

1a85b49b87 parse-options: make OPT_ARGUMENT() more useful
`OPT_ARGUMENT()` is intended to keep the specified long option in `argv`
and not to do anything else.

However, it would make a lot of sense for the caller to know whether
this option was seen at all or not. For example, we want to teach `git
difftool` to work outside of any Git worktree, but only when
`--no-index` was specified.

Note: nothing in Git uses OPT_ARGUMENT(). Even worse, looking through
the commit history, one can easily see that nothing even
ever used it, apart from the regression test.

So not only do we make `OPT_ARGUMENT()` more useful, we are also about
to introduce its first real user!

5af7417bd8 commit-graph: rename "large edges" to "extra edges"
The optional 'Large Edge List' chunk of the commit graph file stores
parent information for commits with more than two parents, and the
names of most of the macros, variables, struct fields, and functions
related to this chunk contain the term "large edges", e.g.
write_graph_chunk_large_edges().  However, it's not a really great
term, as the edges to the second and subsequent parents stored in this
chunk are not any larger than the edges to the first and second
parents stored in the "main" 'Commit Data' chunk. It's the number of
edges, IOW number of parents, that is larger compared to non-merge and
"regular" two-parent merge commits. And indeed, two functions in
'commit-graph.c' have a local variable called 'num_extra_edges' that
refer to the same thing, and this "extra edges" term is much better at
describing these edges.

So let's rename all these references to "large edges" in macro,
variable, function, etc. names to "extra edges". There is a
GRAPH_OCTOPUS_EDGES_NEEDED macro as well; for the sake of consistency
rename it to GRAPH_EXTRA_EDGES_NEEDED.

We can do so safely without causing any incompatibility issues,
because the term "large edges" doesn't come up in the file format
itself in any form (the chunk's magic is {'E', 'D', 'G', 'E'}, there
is no 'L' in there), but only in the specification text. The string
"large edges", however, does come up in the output of 'git
commit-graph read' and in tests looking at its input, but that command
is explicitly documented as debugging aid, so we can change its output
and the affected tests safely.

0bbc0bc574 {fetch,upload}-pack: sideband v2 fetch response
Currently, a response to a fetch request has sideband support only while
the packfile is being sent, meaning that the server cannot send notices
until the start of the packfile.

Extend sideband support in protocol v2 fetch responses to the whole
response. upload-pack will advertise it if the
uploadpack.allowsidebandall configuration variable is set, and
fetch-pack will automatically request it if advertised.

If the sideband is to be used throughout the whole response, upload-pack
will use it to send errors instead of prefixing a PKT-LINE payload with
"ERR ".

This will be tested in a subsequent patch.

2d103c31c2 pack-protocol.txt: accept error packets in any context
In the Git pack protocol definition, an error packet may appear only in
a certain context. However, servers can face a runtime error (e.g. I/O
error) at an arbitrary timing. This patch changes the protocol to allow
an error packet to be sent instead of any packet.

Without this protocol spec change, when a server cannot process a
request, there's no way to tell that to a client. Since the server
cannot produce a valid response, it would be forced to cut a connection
without telling why. With this protocol spec change, the server can be
more gentle in this situation. An old client may see these error packets
as an unexpected packet, but this is not worse than having an unexpected
EOF.

Following this protocol spec change, the error packet handling code is
moved to pkt-line.c. Implementation wise, this implementation uses
pkt-line to communicate with a subprocess. Since this is not a part of
Git protocol, it's possible that a packet that is not supposed to be an
error packet is mistakenly parsed as an error packet. This error packet
handling is enabled only for the Git pack protocol parsing code
considering this.

All config extensions are described in technical/repository-version.txt.
I made a mistake of adding it in config.txt instead. This patch moves

Since repository-version.txt is not part of officially generated

There are no users of OPT_DATE except for test-parse-options; its

It also has a bug: it does not specify PARSE_OPT_NONEG, but its callback
does not respect the "unset" flag, and will feed NULL to approxidate()

should set the timestamp to some sentinel value (e.g,. "0", or

But since there are no callers, deleting it means we don't even have to

3255089ada ieot: add Index Entry Offset Table (IEOT) extension
This patch enables addressing the CPU cost of loading the index by adding
additional data to the index that will allow us to efficiently multi-
thread the loading and conversion of cache entries.

It accomplishes this by adding an (optional) index extension that is a
table of offsets to blocks of cache entries in the index file. To make
this work for V4 indexes, when writing the cache entries, it periodically
"resets" the prefix-compression by encoding the current entry as if the
path name for the previous entry is completely different and saves the
offset of that entry in the IEOT. Basically, with V4 indexes, it
generates offsets into blocks of prefix-compressed entries.

3b1d9e045e eoie: add End of Index Entry (EOIE) extension
The End of Index Entry (EOIE) is used to locate the end of the variable
length index entries and the beginning of the extensions. Code can take
advantage of this to quickly locate the index extensions without having
to parse through all of the index entries.

The EOIE extension is always written out to the index file including to
the shared index when using the split index feature. Because it is always
written out, the SHA checksums in t/t1700-split-index.sh were updated
to reflect its inclusion.

It is written as an optional extension to ensure compatibility with other
git implementations that do not yet support it. It is always written out
to ensure it is available as often as possible to speed up index operations.

Because it must be able to be loaded before the variable length cache
entries and other index extensions, this extension must be written last.
The signature for this extension is { 'E', 'O', 'I', 'E' }.

The extension consists of:

- 32-bit offset to the end of the index entries

- 160-bit SHA-1 over the extension types and their sizes (but not
their contents). E.g. if we have "TREE" extension that is N-bytes
long, "REUC" extension that is M-bytes long, followed by "EOIE",
then the hash would be:

SHA-1("TREE" + <binary representation of N> +
    "REUC" + <binary representation of M>)

0ed8d8da37 doc hash-function-transition: pick SHA-256 as NewHash
From a security perspective, it seems that SHA-256, BLAKE2, SHA3-256,
K12, and so on are all believed to have similar security properties.
All are good options from a security point of view.

SHA-256 has a number of advantages:

* It has been around for a while, is widely used, and is supported by
just about every single crypto library (OpenSSL, mbedTLS, CryptoNG,
  SecureTransport, etc).

* When you compare against SHA1DC, most vectorized SHA-256
implementations are indeed faster, even without acceleration.

* If we're doing signatures with OpenPGP (or even, I suppose, CMS),
we're going to be using SHA-2, so it doesn't make sense to have our
security depend on two separate algorithms when either one of them
alone could break the security when we could just depend on one.

So SHA-256 it is. Update the hash-function-transition design doc to
say so.

After this patch, there are no remaining instances of the string
"NewHash", except for an unrelated use from 2008 as a variable name in
t/t9700/test.pl.

4af32207bc rerere: teach rerere to handle nested conflicts
Currently rerere can't handle nested conflicts and will error out when
it encounters such conflicts. Do that by recursively calling the
'handle_conflict' function to normalize the conflict.

Note that a conflict like this would only be produced if a user
commits a file with conflict markers, and gets a conflict including
that in a susbsequent operation.

The conflict ID calculation here deserves some explanation:

As we are using the same handle_conflict function, the nested conflict
is normalized the same way as for non-nested conflicts, which means
the ancestor in the diff3 case is stripped out, and the parts of the
conflict are ordered alphabetically.

The conflict ID is however is only calculated in the top level
handle_conflict call, so it will include the markers that 'rerere'
adds to the output. e.g. say there's the following conflict:

    <<<<<<< HEAD
    1
    =======
    <<<<<<< HEAD
    3
    =======
    2
    >>>>>>> branch-2
    >>>>>>> branch-3~

it would be recorde as follows in the preimage:

    <<<<<<<
    1
    =======
    <<<<<<<
    2
    =======
    3
    >>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>

and the conflict ID would be calculated as

    sha1(1<NUL><<<<<<<
    2
    =======
    3
    >>>>>>><NUL>)

Stripping out vs. leaving the conflict markers in place in the inner
conflict should have no practical impact, but it simplifies the
implementation.

8fa8a4f1ec Merge branch 'jt/partial-clone-fsck-connectivity'
Partial clone support of "git clone" has been updated to correctly
validate the objects it receives from the other side. The server
side has been corrected to send objects that are directly
requested, even if they may match the filtering criteria (e.g. when
doing a "lazy blob" partial clone).

* jt/partial-clone-fsck-connectivity:

662148c435 midx: write object offsets
The final pair of chunks for the multi-pack-index file stores the object
offsets. We default to using 32-bit offsets as in the pack-index version
1 format, but if there exists an offset larger than 32-bits, we use a
trick similar to the pack-index version 2 format by storing all offsets
at least 2^31 in a 64-bit table; we use the 32-bit table to point into
that 64-bit table as necessary.

We only store these 64-bit offsets if necessary, so create a test that
manipulates a version 2 pack-index to fake a large offset. This allows
us to test that the large offset table is created, but the data does not
match the actual packfile offsets. The multi-pack-index offset does match
the (corrupted) pack-index offset, so a future feature will compare these
offsets during a 'verify' step.

32f3c541e3 multi-pack-index: write pack names in chunk
The multi-pack-index needs to track which packfiles it indexes. Store
these in our first required chunk. Since filenames are not well
structured, add padding to keep good alignment in later chunks.

Modify the 'git multi-pack-index read' subcommand to output the
existence of the pack-file name chunk. Modify t5319-multi-pack-index.sh
to reflect this new output and the new expected number of chunks.

Defense in depth: A pattern we are using in the multi-pack-index feature
is to verify the data as we write it. We want to ensure we never write
invalid data to the multi-pack-index. There are many checks that verify
that the values we are writing fit the format definitions. This mainly
helps developers while working on the feature, but it can also identify
issues that only appear when dealing with very large data sets. These
large sets are hard to encode into test cases.

e0d1bcf825 multi-pack-index: add format details
The multi-pack-index feature generalizes the existing pack-index
feature by indexing objects across multiple pack-files.

Describe the basic file format, using a 12-byte header followed by
a lookup table for a list of "chunks" which will be described later.
The file ends with a footer containing a checksum using the hash
algorithm.

The header allows later versions to create breaking changes by
advancing the version number. We can also change the hash algorithm
using a different version value.

We will add the individual chunk format information as we introduce
the code that writes that information.

a0c9016abd upload-pack: send refs' objects despite "filter"
A filter line in a request to upload-pack filters out objects regardless
of whether they are directly referenced by a "want" line or not. This
means that cloning with "--filter=blob:none" (or another filter that
excludes blobs) from a repository with at least one ref pointing to a
blob (for example, the Git repository itself) results in output like the
following:

error: missing object referenced by 'refs/tags/junio-gpg-pub'

and if that particular blob is not referenced by a fetched tree, the
resulting clone fails fsck because there is no object from the remote to
vouch that the missing object is a promisor object.

Update both the protocol and the upload-pack implementation to include
all explicitly specified "want" objects in the packfile regardless of
the filter specification.

a9aa3c0927 commit-graph: fix documentation inconsistencies
The commit-graph feature shipped in Git 2.18 has some inconsistencies in
the constants used by the implementation and specified by the format
document.

The commit data chunk uses the key "CDAT" in the file format, but was
previously documented to say "CGET".

The commit data chunk stores commit parents using two 32-bit fields that
typically store the integer position of the parent in the list of commit
ids within the commit-graph file. When a parent does not exist, we had
documented the value 0xffffffff, but implemented the value 0x70000000.
This swap is easy to correct in the documentation, but unfortunately
reduces the number of commits that we can store in the commit-graph.
Update that estimate, too.

516e2b76bd upload-pack: implement ref-in-want
Currently, while performing packfile negotiation, clients are only
allowed to specify their desired objects using object ids. This causes
a vulnerability to failure when an object turns non-existent during
negotiation, which may happen if, for example, the desired repository is
provided by multiple Git servers in a load-balancing arrangement and
there exists replication delay.

In order to eliminate this vulnerability, implement the ref-in-want
feature for the 'fetch' command in protocol version 2. This feature
enables the 'fetch' command to support requests in the form of ref names
through a new "want-ref <ref>" parameter. At the conclusion of
negotiation, the server will send a list of all of the wanted references
(as provided by "want-ref" lines) in addition to the generated packfile.
