34f5130af8 Merge branch 'jc/merge-bases'
Optimise the "merge-base" computation a bit, and also update its
users that do not need the full merge-base information to call a
cheaper subset.

* jc/merge-bases:
reduce_heads(): reimplement on top of remove_redundant()
  merge-base: "--is-ancestor A B"
get_merge_bases_many(): walk from many tips in parallel
  in_merge_bases(): use paint_down_to_common()
merge_bases_many(): split out the logic to paint history
in_merge_bases(): omit unnecessary redundant common ancestor reduction
  http-push: use in_merge_bases() for fast-forward check
  receive-pack: use in_merge_bases() for fast-forward check

a20efee9cf in_merge_bases(): support only one "other" commit
In early days of its life, I planned to make it possible to compute
"is a commit contained in all of these other commits?" with this
function, but it turned out that no caller needed it.

Just make it take two commit objects and add a comment to say what
these two functions do.

d318a3997a Merge branch 'jk/maint-reflog-walk-count-vs-time'
Gives a better DWIM behaviour for --pretty=format:%gd, "stash list", and
"log -g", depending on how the starting point ("master" vs "master@{0}" vs
"master@{now}") and date formatting options (e.g. "--date=iso") are given
on the command line.

reflog-walk: always make HEAD@{0} show indexed selectors

f026c7563a log: respect date_mode_explicit with --format:%gd
When we show a reflog selector (e.g., via "git log -g"), we
perform some DWIM magic: while we normally show the entry's
index (e.g., HEAD@{1}), if the user has given us a date
with "--date", then we show a date-based select (e.g.,
HEAD@{yesterday}).

However, we don't want to trigger this magic if the
alternate date format we got was from the "log.date"
configuration; that is not sufficiently strong context for
us to invoke this particular magic. To fix this, commit
f4ea32f (improve reflog date/number heuristic, 2009-09-24)
introduced a "date_mode_explicit" flag in rev_info. This
flag is set only when we see a "--date" option on the
command line, and we a vanilla date to the reflog code if
the date was not explicit.

Later, commit 8f8f547 (Introduce new pretty formats %g[sdD]
for reflog information, 2009-10-19) added another way to
show selectors, and it did not respect the date_mode_explicit
flag from f4ea32f.

This patch propagates the date_mode_explicit flag to the
pretty-print code, which can then use it to pass the
appropriate date field to the reflog code. This brings the
behavior of "%gd" in line with the other formats, and means
that its output is independent of any user configuration.

fbc08ea177 revision: insert unsorted, then sort in prepare_revision_walk()
Speed up prepare_revision_walk() by adding commits without sorting
to the commit_list and at the end sort the list in one go. Thanks
to mergesort() working behind the scenes, this is a lot faster for
large numbers of commits than the current insert sort.

Also introduce and use commit_list_reverse(), to keep the ordering
of commits sharing the same commit date unchanged. That's because
commit_list_insert_by_date() sorts commits with descending date,
but adds later entries with the same date entries last, while
commit_list_insert() always inserts entries at the top. The
following commit_list_sort_by_date() keeps the order of entries
sharing the same date.

Jeff's test case, in a repo with lots of refs, was to run:

  # make a new commit on top of HEAD, but not yet referenced
  sha1=`git commit-tree HEAD^{tree} -p HEAD </dev/null`

  # now do the same "connected" test that receive-pack would do
git rev-list --objects $sha1 --not --all

With a git.git with a ref for each revision, master needs (best of
five):

	real	0m2.210s
	user	0m2.188s
	sys	0m0.016s

And with this patch:

	real	0m0.480s
	user	0m0.456s
	sys	0m0.020s

13f8b72d8c Convert commit_tree() to take strbuf as message
There wan't a way for commit_tree() to notice if the message the caller
prepared contained a NUL byte, as it did not take the length of the
message as a parameter. Use a pointer to a strbuf instead, so that we can
either choose to allow low-level plumbing commands to make commits that
contain NUL byte in its message, or forbid NUL everywhere by adding the
check in commit_tree(), in later patches.

0c37f1fce6 log: --show-signature
This teaches the "log" family of commands to pass the GPG signature in the
commit objects to "gpg --verify" via the verify_signed_buffer() interface
used to verify signed tag objects. E.g.

    $ git show --show-signature -s HEAD

shows GPG output in the header part of the output.

ba3c69a9ee commit: teach --gpg-sign option
This uses the gpg-interface.[ch] to allow signing the commit, i.e.

    $ git commit --gpg-sign -m foo
You need a passphrase to unlock the secret key for
    user: "Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>"
4096-bit RSA key, ID 96AFE6CB, created 2011-10-03 (main key ID 713660A7)

    [master 8457d13] foo
     1 files changed, 1 insertions(+), 0 deletions(-)

The lines of GPG detached signature are placed in a new multi-line header
field, instead of tucking the signature block at the end of the commit log
message text (similar to how signed tag is done), for multiple reasons:

 - The signature won't clutter output from "git log" and friends if it is
in the extra header. If we place it at the end of the log message, we
would need to teach "git log" and friends to strip the signature block
   with an option.

 - Teaching new versions of "git log" and "gitk" to optionally verify and
show signatures is cleaner if we structurally know where the signature
block is (instead of scanning in the commit log message).

 - The signature needs to be stripped upon various commit rewriting
operations, e.g. rebase, filter-branch, etc. They all already ignore
unknown headers, but if we place signature in the log message, all of
these tools (and third-party tools) also need to learn how a signature
   block would look like.

 - When we added the optional encoding header, all the tools (both in tree
and third-party) that acts on the raw commit object should have been
fixed to ignore headers they do not understand, so it is not like that
new header would be more likely to break than extra text in the commit.

A commit made with the above sample sequence would look like this:

    $ git cat-file commit HEAD
    tree 3cd71d90e3db4136e5260ab54599791c4f883b9d

5231c633f2 commit: copy merged signed tags to headers of merge commit
Now MERGE_HEAD records the tag objects without peeling, we could record
the result of manual conflict resolution via "git commit" without losing
the tag information. Introduce a new "mergetag" multi-line header field to
the commit object, and use it to store the entire contents of each signed
tag merged.

A commit header that has a multi-line payload begins with the header tag
(e.g. "mergetag" in this case), SP, the first line of payload, LF, and all
the remaining lines have a SP inserted at the beginning.

In hindsight, it would have been better to make "merge --continue" as the
way to continue from such an interrupted merge, not "commit", but this is
a backward compatibility baggage we would need to carry around for now.

ae8e4c9ce1 merge: make usage of commit->util more extensible
The merge-recursive code uses the commit->util field directly to annotate
the commit objects given from the command line, i.e. the remote heads to
be merged, with a single string to be used to describe it in its trace
messages and conflict markers.

Correct this short-signtedness by redefining the field to be a pointer to
a structure "struct merge_remote_desc" that later enhancements can add
more information. Store the original objects we were told to merge in a
field "obj" in this struct, so that we can recover the tag we were told to
merge.

baf18fc261 Accept tags in HEAD or MERGE_HEAD
HEAD and MERGE_HEAD (among other branch tips) should never hold a
tag. That can only be caused by broken tools and is cumbersome to fix
by an end user with:

  $ git update-ref HEAD $(git rev-parse HEAD^{commit})

which may look like a magic to a new person.

Be easy, warn users (so broken tools can be fixed if they bother to
report) and move on.

Be robust, if the given SHA-1 cannot be resolved to a commit object,
die (therefore return value is always valid).

9553d2b263 format-patch: preserve subject newlines with -k
In older versions of git, we used rfc822 header folding to
indicate that the original subject line had multiple lines
in it. But since a1f6baa (format-patch: wrap long header
lines, 2011-02-23), we now use header folding whenever there
is a long line.

This means that "git am" cannot trust header folding as a
sign from format-patch that newlines should be preserved.
Instead, format-patch needs to signal more explicitly that
the newlines are significant. This patch does so by
rfc2047-encoding the newlines in the subject line. No
changes are needed on the "git am" end; it already decodes
the newlines properly.

6bf139440c clean up calling conventions for pretty.c functions
We have a pretty_print_context representing the parameters
for a pretty-print session, but we did not use it uniformly.
As a result, functions kept growing more and more arguments.

Let's clean this up in a few ways:

  1. All pretty-print pp_* functions now take a context.
This lets us reduce the number of arguments to these
functions, since we were just passing around the
     context values separately.

  2. The context argument now has a cmit_fmt field, which
was passed around separately. That's one less argument
     per function.

  3. The context argument always comes first, which makes
     calling a little more uniform.

This drops lines from some callers, and adds lines in a few
places (because we need an extra line to set the context's
fmt field). Overall, we don't save many lines, but the lines
that are there are a lot simpler and more readable.

9cba13ca5d standardize brace placement in struct definitions
In a struct definitions, unlike functions, the prevailing style is for
the opening brace to go on the same line as the struct name, like so:

 struct foo {

Indeed, grepping for 'struct [a-z_]* {$' yields about 5 times as many
matches as 'struct [a-z_]*$'.

4b05548fc0 enums: omit trailing comma for portability
Without this patch at least IBM VisualAge C 5.0 (I have 5.0.2) on AIX
5.1 fails to compile git.

enum style is inconsistent already, with some enums declared on one
line, some over 3 lines with the enum values all on the middle line,
sometimes with 1 enum value per line... and independently of that the
trailing comma is sometimes present and other times absent, often
mixing with/without trailing comma styles in a single file, and
sometimes in consecutive enum declarations.

Clearly, omitting the comma is the more portable style, and this patch
changes all enum declarations to use the portable omitted dangling
comma style consistently.

40d52ff77b make commit_tree a library function
Until now, this has been part of the commit-tree builtin.
However, it is already used by other builtins (like commit,
merge, and notes), and it would be useful to access it from
library code.

The check_valid helper has to come along, too, but is given
a more library-ish name of "assert_sha1_type".

Otherwise, the code is unchanged. There are still a few
rough edges for a library function, like printing the utf8
warning to stderr, but we can address those if and when they
come up as inappropriate.

66b2ed09c2 Fix "log" family not to be too agressive about showing notes
Giving "Notes" information in the default output format of "log" and
"show" is a sensible progress (the user has asked for it by having the
notes), but for some commands (e.g. "format-patch") spewing notes into the
formatted commit log message without being asked is too aggressive.

Enable notes output only for "log", "show", "whatchanged" by default and
only when the user didn't ask any specific --pretty/--format from the
command line; users can explicitly override this default with --show-notes
and --no-notes option.

edace6f02e fetch-pack: Use a strbuf to compose the want list
This change is being offered as a refactoring to make later
commits in the smart HTTP series easier.

By changing the enabled capabilities to be formatted in a strbuf
it is easier to add a new capability to the set of supported
capabilities.

By formatting the want portion of the request into a strbuf and
writing it as a whole block we can later decide to hold onto
the req_buf (instead of releasing it) to recycle in stateless
communications.

8f8f5476cd Introduce new pretty formats %g[sdD] for reflog information
Add three new --pretty=format escapes:

  %gD long reflog descriptor (e.g. refs/stash@{0})
  %gd short reflog descriptor (e.g. stash@{0})
  %gs reflog message

This is achieved by passing down the reflog info, if any, inside the
pretty_print_context struct.

We use the newly refactored get_reflog_selector(), and give it some
extra functionality to extract a shortened ref. The shortening is
cached inside the commit_reflogs struct; the only allocation of it
happens in read_complete_reflog(), where it is initialised to 0. Also
add another helper get_reflog_message() for the message extraction.

Note that the --format="%h %gD: %gs" tests may not work in real
repositories, as the --pretty formatter doesn't know to leave away the
": " on the last commit in an incomplete (because git-gc removed the
old part) reflog. This equivalence is nevertheless the main goal of
this patch.

dd2e794a21 Refactor pretty_print_commit arguments into a struct
pretty_print_commit() has a bunch of rarely-used arguments, and
introducing more of them requires yet another update of all the call
sites. Refactor most of them into a struct to make future extensions
easier.

The ones that stay "plain" arguments were chosen on the grounds that
all callers put real arguments there, whereas some callers have 0/NULL
for all arguments that were factored into the struct.

We declare the struct 'const' to ensure none of the callers are bitten
by the changed (no longer call-by-value) semantics.

Currently git-blame outputs text from the commit messages
(e.g. the author name and the summary string) as-is, without
even providing any information about the encoding used for
the data. It makes interpreting the data in multilingual
environment very difficult.

This commit changes the blame implementation to recode the
messages using the rules used by other commands like git-log.
Namely, the target encoding can be specified through the
i18n.commitEncoding or i18n.logOutputEncoding options, or
directly on the command line using the --encoding parameter.

Converting the encoding before output seems to be more
friendly to the porcelain tools than simply providing the
value of the encoding header, and does not require changing
the output format.

If anybody needs the old behavior, it is possible to
achieve it by specifying --encoding=none.

The new function reduce_heads() is given a list of commits, and removes

The implementation uses the get_merge_bases_many() introduced in the

4da45bef56 log: teach "terminator" vs "separator" mode to "--pretty=format"
This attached patch introduces a single bit "use_terminator" in "struct
rev_info", which is normally false (i.e. most formats use separator
semantics) but by flipping it to true, you can ask for terminator
semantics just like oneline format does.

The function get_commit_format(), which is what parses "--pretty=" option,
now takes a pointer to "struct rev_info" and updates its commit_format and
use_terminator fields. It used to return the value of type "enum
cmit_fmt", but all the callers assigned it to rev->commit_format.

There are only two cases the code turns use_terminator on. Obviously, the
traditional oneline format (--pretty=oneline) is one of them, and the new
case is --pretty=tformat:... that acts like --pretty=format:... but flips
the bit on.

With this, "--pretty=tformat:%H %s" acts like --pretty=oneline.

6bf4f1b4c9 format-patch: generate MIME header as needed even when there is format.header
Earlier, the callchain from pretty_print_commit() down to pp_title_line()
had an unwarranted assumption that the presense of "after_subject"
parameter, means the caller has already output MIME headers for
attachments. The parameter's primary purpose is to give extra header
lines the caller wants to place after pp_title_line() generates the
"Subject: " line.

This assumption does not hold when the user used the format.header
configuration variable to pass extra headers, and caused a message with
non-ASCII character to lack proper MIME headers (e.g. 8-bit CTE header).
The earlier logic also failed to suppress duplicated MIME headers when
"format-patch -s --attach" is asked for and the signer's name demanded
8-bit clean transport.

This patch fixes the logic by introducing a separate need_8bit_cte
parameter passed down the callchain. This can have one of these values:

-1 : we've already done MIME crap and we do not want to add extra header
      to say this is 8bit in pp_title_line();

  0 : we haven't done MIME and we have not seen anything that is 8bit yet;

  1 : we haven't done MIME and we have seen something that is 8bit;
      pp_title_line() must add MIME header.

It adds two tests by Jeff King who independently diagnosed this issue.

b6ec1d619f Fix add_files_to_cache() to take pathspec, not user specified list of files
This separates the logic to limit the extent of change to the
index by where you are (controlled by "prefix") and what you
specify from the command line (controlled by "pathspec").

53b2c823f6 revision walker: mini clean-up
This removes the unnecessary indirection of "revs->prune_fn",
since that function is always the same one (or NULL), and there
is in fact not even an abstraction reason to make it a function
(i.e. its not called from some other file and doesn't allow us
to keep the function itself static or anything like that).

It then just replaces it with a bit that says "prune or not",
and if not pruning, every commit gets TREECHANGE.

That in turn means that

 - if (!revs->prune_fn || (flags & TREECHANGE))
 - if (revs->prune_fn && !(flags & TREECHANGE))

just become

 - if (flags & TREECHANGE)
 - if (!(flags & TREECHANGE))

respectively.

Together with adding the "single_parent()" helper function, the "complex"
conditional now becomes

	if (!(flags & TREECHANGE) && rev->dense && single_parent(commit))
		continue;

Also indirection of "revs->dense" checking is thrown away the
same way, because TREECHANGE bit is set appropriately now.

23c17d4a4a Simplify topo-sort logic
.. by not using quite so much indirection.

This currently grows the "struct commit" a bit, which could be avoided by
using a union for "util" and "indegree" (the topo-sort used to use "util"
anyway, so you cannot use them together), but for now the goal of this was
to simplify, not optimize.

4593fb8405 format-patch -s: add MIME encoding header if signer's name requires so
When the body of the commit log message contains a non-ASCII character,
format-patch correctly emitted the encoding header to mark the resulting
message as such. However, if the original message was fully ASCII, the
command line switch "-s" was given to add a new sign-off, and
the signer's name was not ASCII only, the resulting message would have
contained non-ASCII character but was not marked as such.

5868016508 Introduce entry point add_interactive and add_files_to_cache
This refactors builtin-add.c a little to provide a unique entry point
for launching git add --interactive, which will be used by
builtin-commit too. If we later want to make add --interactive a
builtin or change how it is launched, we just start from this function.

It also exports the private function update() which is used to
add all modified paths to the index as add_files_to_cache().

674d172730 Rework pretty_print_commit to use strbufs instead of custom buffers.
Also remove the "len" parameter, as:
  (1) it was used as a max boundary, and every caller used ~0u
  (2) we check for final NUL no matter what, so it doesn't help for speed.

As a result most of the pp_* function takes 3 arguments less, and we need
a lot less local variables, this makes the code way more readable, and
easier to extend if needed.

This patch also fixes some spacing and cosmetic issues.

This patch also fixes (as a side effect) a memory leak intoruced in

80583c0ef6 Lift 16kB limit of log message output
Traditionally we had 16kB limit when formatting log messages for
output, because it was easier to arrange for the caller to have
a reasonably big buffer and pass it down without ever worrying
about reallocating.

This changes the calling convention of pretty_print_commit() to
lift this limit. Instead of the buffer and remaining length, it
now takes a pointer to the pointer that points at the allocated
buffer, and another pointer to the location that stores the
allocated length, and reallocates the buffer as necessary.

To support the user format, the error return of interpolate()
needed to be changed. It used to return a bool telling "Ok the
result fits", or "Sorry, I had to truncate it". Now it returns
0 on success, and returns the size of the buffer it wants in
order to fit the whole result.

ed09aef06f support fetching into a shallow repository
A shallow commit is a commit which has parents, which in turn are
"grafted away", i.e. the commit appears as if it were a root.

Since these shallow commits should not be edited by the user, but
only by core git, they are recorded in the file $GIT_DIR/shallow.

A repository containing shallow commits is called shallow.

The advantage of a shallow repository is that even if the upstream
contains lots of history, your local (shallow) repository needs not
occupy much disk space.

The disadvantage is that you might miss a merge base when pulling
some remote branch.

60ab26de99 [PATCH] Avoid wasting memory in git-rev-list
As pointed out on the list, git-rev-list can use a lot of memory.

One low-hanging fruit is to free the commit buffer for commits that we
parse. By default, parse_commit() will save away the buffer, since a lot
of cases do want it, and re-reading it continually would be unnecessary.
However, in many cases the buffer isn't actually necessary and saving it
just wastes memory.

We could just free the buffer ourselves, but especially in git-rev-list,
we actually end up using the helper functions that automatically add
parent commits to the commit lists, so we don't actually control the
commit parsing directly.

Instead, just make this behaviour of "parse_commit()" a global flag.
Maybe this is a bit tasteless, but it's very simple, and it makes a
noticable difference in memory usage.

Before the change:

	[torvalds@g5 linux]$ /usr/bin/time git-rev-list v2.6.12..HEAD > /dev/null
	0.26user 0.02system 0:00.28elapsed 99%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k
	0inputs+0outputs (0major+3714minor)pagefaults 0swaps

after the change:

	[torvalds@g5 linux]$ /usr/bin/time git-rev-list v2.6.12..HEAD > /dev/null

	0inputs+0outputs (0major+2433minor)pagefaults 0swaps

note how the minor faults have decreased from 3714 pages to 2433 pages.
That's all due to the fewer anonymous pages allocated to hold the comment
buffers and their metadata.

f76412ed6d [PATCH] Add 'git show-branch'.
The 'git show-branches' command turns out to be reasonably useful,
but painfully slow. So rewrite it in C, using ideas from merge-base
while enhancing it a bit more.

 - Unlike show-branches, it can take --heads (show me all my
heads), --tags (show me all my tags), or --all (both).

 - It can take --more=<number> to show beyond the merge-base.

 - It shows the short name for each commit in the extended SHA1
   syntax.

 - It can find merge-base for more than two heads.

Examples:

    $ git show-branch --more=6 HEAD

is almost the same as "git log --pretty=oneline --max-count=6".

    $ git show-branch --merge-base master mhf misc

finds the merge base of the three given heads.

$ git show-branch master mhf misc

shows logs from the top of these three branch heads, up to their
    common ancestor commit is shown.

    $ git show-branch --all --more=10

is poor-man's gitk, showing all the tags and heads, and
going back 10 commits beyond the merge base of those refs.

ab580acea4 [PATCH] Add a topological sort procedure to commit.c
This introduces an in-place topological sort procedure to commit.c.

Given a list of commits, sort_in_topological_order() will perform an in-place
topological sort of that list.

The invariant that applies to the resulting list is:

       a reachable from b => ord(b) < ord(a)

This invariant is weaker than the --merge-order invariant, but is cheaper
to calculate (assuming the list has been identified) and will serve any
purpose where only a minimal topological order guarantee is required.

The linearisation produced by this patch is superior in an objective sense
to that produced by the existing git-rev-list implementation in that
the linearisation produced is guaranteed to have the minimum number of
discontinuities, where a discontinuity is defined as an adjacent pair of
commits in the output list which are not related in a direct child-parent
relationship.

With this patch a graph like this:

	a4 ---
	| \ \
	| b4 |
	|/ | |
	a3 | |
	| | |
	a2 | |
	| | c3
	| | |
	| | c2
	| b3 |
	| | /|
	| b2 |
	| | c1
	| | /
	| b1
	a1 |
	| |
	a0 |
	| /
	root

Sorts like this:

	= a4
	| c3
	| c2
	| c1
	^ b4
	| b3
	| b2
	| b1
	^ a3
	| a2
	| a1
	| a0
	= root

Instead of this:

	= a4
	| c3
	^ b4
	| a3
	^ c2
	^ b3
	^ a2
	^ b2
	^ c1
	^ a1
	^ b1
	^ a0
	= root

A test script, t/t6000-rev-list.sh, includes a test which demonstrates
that the linearisation produced by --merge-order has less discontinuities
than the linearisation produced by git-rev-list without the --merge-order
flag specified. To see this, do the following:

	cd t
	./t6000-rev-list.sh
	cd trash
	cat actual-default-order
	cat actual-merge-order

The existing behaviour of git-rev-list is preserved, by default. To obtain
the modified behaviour, specify --merge-order or --merge-order --show-breaks
on the command line.

This version of the patch has been tested on the git repository and also on the linux-2.6
repository and has reasonable performance on both - ~50-100% slower than the original algorithm.

This version of the patch has incorporated a functional equivalent of the Linus' output limiting
algorithm into the merge-order algorithm itself. This operates per the notes associated
with Linus' commit 337cb3fb8d.

This version has incorporated Linus' feedback regarding proposed changes to rev-list.c.
(see: [PATCH] Factor out filtering in rev-list.c)

This version has improved the way sort_first_epoch marks commits as uninteresting.

For more details about this change, refer to Documentation/git-rev-list.txt
and http://blackcubes.dyndns.org/epoch/.

000182eacf pretty_print_commit: add different formats
You can ask to print out "raw" format (full headers, full body),
"medium" format (author and date, full body) or "short" format
(author only, condensed body).

Use "git-rev-list --pretty=short HEAD | less -S" for an example.

3ff1fbbb94 commit: save the commit buffer off when parsing a commit
object.

A fair number of the users potentially want to look at the
commit objects more closely, and if you worry about memory
leaking in certain applications, you can always do a

	free(commit->buffer);
	commit->buffer = NULL;

by hand after parsing them.

bd2c39f58f [PATCH] don't load and decompress objects twice with parse_object()
It turns out that parse_object() is loading and decompressing given
object to free it just before calling the specific object parsing
function which does mmap and decompress the same object again. This
patch introduces the ability to parse specific objects directly from a
memory buffer.

Without this patch, running git-fsck-cache on the kernel repositorytake:

	real 0m13.006s
	user 0m11.421s
	sys 0m1.218s

With this patch applied:

	real 0m8.060s
	user 0m7.071s
	sys 0m0.710s

The performance increase is significant, and this is kind of a
prerequisite for sane delta object support with fsck.
