The commit-graph file is now part of the "files that the runtime
may keep open file descriptors on, all of which would need to be
closed when done with the object store", and the file descriptor to
an existing commit-graph file now is closed before "gc" finalizes a
new instance to replace it.

In --interactive mode, "git am --resolved" will try to generate a patch
based on what is in the index, so that it can prompt "apply this
patch?". To do so it needs the tree of HEAD, which it tries to get with
get_oid_tree(). However, this doesn't yield a tree object; the "tree"
part just means "if you must disambiguate short oids, then prefer trees"
(and we do not need to disambiguate at all, since we are feeding a ref).
Instead, we must parse the oid as a commit (which should always be true
in a non-corrupt repository), and access its tree pointer manually.
This has been broken since the conversion to C in 7ff2683253
(builtin-am: implement -i/--interactive, 2015-08-04), but there was no
test coverage because of interactive-mode's insistence on having a tty.
That was lifted in the previous commit, so we can now add a test for
this case.
Note that before this patch, the test would result in a BUG() which
comes from 3506dc9445 (has_uncommitted_changes(): fall back to empty
tree, 2018-07-11). But before that, we'd have simply segfaulted (and in
fact this is the exact type of case the BUG() added there was trying to
catch!).

We have required that the stdin of "am --interactive" be a tty since
a1451104ac (git-am: interactive should fail gracefully., 2005-10-12).
However, this isn't strictly necessary, and makes the tool harder to
test (and is unlike all of our other --interactive commands).
The goal of that commit was to make sure that somebody does not do:
git am --interactive <mbox
and cause us to read commands from the mbox. But we can simply check
up front for this case and complain before entering the interactive
loop.
Technically this disallows:
git am --interactive </dev/null
where our lack of patches means we would never prompt for anything, and
so the old code would not notice our lack of tty (and now we'd die
early). But since such a command is totally pointless, it's no loss.

In the conversion of git-am from shell script to C, we switched to using
git_prompt(). Unlike the original shell command "read reply", this
doesn't read from stdin at all, but rather from /dev/tty.
In most cases this distinction wouldn't matter. We require (as the shell
script did) that stdin is a tty, so they would generally be the same
thing. But one important exception is our test suite: even with
test_terminal, we cannot test "am --interactive" because it insists on
reading from /dev/tty, not the pseudo-tty we've set up in the test
script.
Fixing this clears the way to adding tests in a future patch.

We'll never see a NULL returned from git_prompt(); if it can't produce
any input for us (e.g., because the terminal got EOF) then it will just
die().
So there's no need for us to handle NULL here. And even if there was, it
doesn't make sense to continue; on a true terminal hangup we'd just loop
infinitely trying to get input that will never come.

After a successful switch, if a merge, cherry-pick or revert is ongoing,
it is canceled. This behavior has been with us from the very early
beginning, soon after git-merge was created but never actually
documented [1]. It may be a good idea to be transparent and tell the
user if some operation is canceled.
I consider this a better way of telling the user than just adding a
sentence or two in git-checkout.txt, which will be mostly ignored
anyway.
PS. Originally I wanted to print more details like
warning: cancelling an in-progress merge from <SHA-1>
which may allow some level of undo if the user wants to. But that seems
a lot more work. Perhaps it can be improved later if people still want
that.

diff_opt_parse() is a heavy hammer to just set diff filter. But it's
the only way because of the diff_status_letters[] mapping. Add a new
API to set diff filter and use it in git-am. diff_opt_parse()'s only
remaining call site in revision.c will be gone soon and having it here
just because of git-am does not make sense.

The author.email, author.name, committer.email and committer.name
settings are analogous to the GIT_AUTHOR_* and GIT_COMMITTER_*
environment variables, but for the git config system. This allows them
to be set separately for each repository.
Git supports setting different authorship and committer
information with environment variables. However, environment variables
are set in the shell, so if different authorship and committer
information is needed for different repositories an external tool is
required.
This adds support to git config for author.email, author.name,
committer.email and committer.name settings so this information
can be set per repository.
Also, it generalizes the fmt_ident function so it can handle author vs
committer identification.

The post-rewrite hook is supposed to be invoked for each rewritten
commit. The fact that a commit was selected and processed by the rebase
operation (even though when we hit an error a user said it had no more
useful changes), suggests we should write an entry for it. In
particular, let's treat it as an empty commit trivially squashed into
its parent.
This brings the rebase--am and rebase--merge backends in sync with the
behavior of the interactive rebase backend.

If there are errors in a user edited author-script there was no
indication of what was wrong. This commit adds some specific error messages
depending on the problem. It also relaxes the requirement that the
variables appear in a specific order in the file to match the behavior
of 'rebase --interactive'.

The reason rerere(), rerere_forget() and rerere_remaining() take a
struct repository instead of struct index_state is not obvious from
the patch:
Deep in update_paths() and find_conflict(), hold_locked_index() and
read_index() are called. These functions assumes the index path at
$GIT_DIR/index which is not always true when you take an arbitrary
index state. Taking a repository will allow us to point to the right
index path later when we replace them with repo_ versions.

Refreshing the index is usually very fast, but it can still take a
long time sometimes. Cold cache is one. Or copying a repo to a new
place (*). It's good to show something to let the user know "git
status" is not hanging, it's just busy doing something.
(*) In this case, all stat info in the index becomes invalid and git
falls back to rehashing all file content to see if there's any
difference between updating stat info in the index. This is quite
expensive. Even with a repo as small as git.git, it takes 3
seconds.

Recent addition of "directory rename" heuristics to the
merge-recursive backend makes the command susceptible to false
positives and false negatives. In the context of "git am -3",
which does not know about surrounding unmodified paths and thus
cannot inform the merge machinery about the full trees involved,
this risk is particularly severe. As such, the heuristic is
disabled for "git am -3" to keep the machinery "more stupid but
predictable".

Let's say you have the following three trees, where Base is from one commit
behind either master or branch:
Base : bar_v1, foo/{file1, file2, file3}
branch: bar_v2, foo/{file1, file2}, goo/file3
master: bar_v3, foo/{file1, file2, file3}
Using git-am (or am-based rebase) to apply the changes from branch onto
master results in the following tree:
Result: bar_merged, goo/{file1, file2, file3}
This is not what users want; they did not rename foo/ -> goo/, they only
renamed one file within that directory. The reason this happens is am
constructs fake trees (via build_fake_ancestor()) of the following form:
Base_bfa : bar_v1, foo/file3
branch_bfa: bar_v2, goo/file3
Combining these two trees with master's tree:
master: bar_v3, foo/{file1, file2, file3},
You can see that merge_recursive_generic() would see branch_bfa as renaming
foo/ -> goo/, and master as just adding both foo/file1 and foo/file2. As
such, it ends up with goo/{file1, file2, file3}
The core problem is that am does not have access to the original trees; it
can only construct trees using the blobs involved in the patch. As such,
it is not safe to perform directory rename detection within am -3.

Add best-effort support for patches sent using format=flowed (RFC 3676).
Remove leading spaces ("unstuff"), remove soft line breaks (indicated
by space + newline), but leave the signature separator (dash dash space
newline) alone.
Warn in git am when encountering a format=flowed patch, because any
trailing spaces would most probably be lost, as the sending MUA is
encouraged to remove them when preparing the email.
Provide a test patch formatted by Mozilla Thunderbird 60 using its
default configuration. It reuses the contents of the file mailinfo.c
before and after this patch.

Using the more restrictive oideq() should, in the long run,
give the compiler more opportunities to optimize these
callsites. For now, this conversion should be a complete
noop with respect to the generated code.
The result is also perhaps a little more readable, as it
avoids the "zero is equal" idiom. Since it's so prevalent in
C, I think seasoned programmers tend not to even notice it
anymore, but it can sometimes make for awkward double
negations (e.g., we can drop a few !!oidcmp() instances
here).
This patch was generated almost entirely by the included
coccinelle patch. This mechanical conversion should be
completely safe, because we check explicitly for cases where
oidcmp() is compared to 0, which is what oideq() is doing
under the hood. Note that we don't have to catch "!oidcmp()"
separately; coccinelle's standard isomorphisms make sure the
two are treated equivalently.
I say "almost" because I did hand-edit the coccinelle output
to fix up a few style violations (it mostly keeps the
original formatting, but sometimes unwraps long lines).
