3275f4e886 t550*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"
This trick was performed via

	$ (cd t &&
	   sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
		-e 's/Master/Main/g' -- t550*.sh)

This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

e4010de9f0 t5503: prepare aligned comment for replacing master with main
In an upcoming commit, we will use `main` as the default branch name in
t5503 instead of `master`. This will require extra padding in ASCII-art
commit graphs, which we hereby add preemptively.

By doing this preemptively rather than after the commit applying the
search-and-replace, it is more obvious that we caught all aligned
comments that are affected by the latter commit.

334afbc76f tests: mark tests relying on the current default for init.defaultBranch
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.

To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in

- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,

- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
  initialize the default branch,

- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,

- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
  uses `master`)

This trick was performed by this command:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
	t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh

After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

	$ git checkout HEAD -- \
		t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
		t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \

		t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
		t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

15ff91aa83 t5503: fix overspecification of trace expectation
In order to extract the wants from a trace, a loop in t5503 currently
breaks if "0000" is found. This works for protocol v0 and v1, but not
v2. Instead, teach t5503 to look specifically for the "want" string,
which is compatible with all protocols.

a6a4a88af0 t: fix &&-chaining issues around setup which might fail
Many tests have an initial setup step that might fail based
on whether earlier tests in the script have succeeded or
not. Using a trick like "|| true" breaks the &&-chain,
missing earlier failures (and fooling --chain-lint).

We can use test_might_fail in some cases, which is correct
and makes the intent more obvious. We can also use
test_unconfig for unsetting config (and which is more
robust, as well).

The case in t9500 is an oddball. It wants to run cmd1 _or_
cmd2, and does it like:

  cmd1 || cmd2 &&
  other_stuff

It's not wrong in this case, but it's a bad habit to get
into, because it breaks the &&-chain if used anywhere except
at the beginning of the test (and we use the correct
solution here, putting it inside a block for precedence).

2ad23273e7 do not use GIT_TRACE_PACKET=3 in tests
Some test scripts use the GIT_TRACE mechanism to dump
debugging information to descriptor 3 (and point it to a
file using the shell). On Windows, however, bash is unable
to set up descriptor 3. We do not write our trace to the
file, and worse, we may interfere with other operations
happening on descriptor 3, causing tests to fail or even
behave inconsistently.

Prior to commit 97a83fa (upload-pack: remove packet debugging
harness), these tests used GIT_DEBUG_SEND_PACK, which only
supported output to a descriptor. The tests in t5503 were
always broken on Windows, and were marked to be skipped via
the NOT_MINGW prerequisite. In t5700, the tests used to pass
prior to 97a83fa, but only because they were not careful
enough; because we only grepped the trace file, an empty
file looked successful to us. But post-97a83fa, the writing
to descriptor 3 causes "git fetch" to hang (presumably
because we are throwing random bytes into the middle of the
protocol).

Now that we are using the GIT_TRACE mechanism, we can
improve both scripts by asking git to write directly to a
file rather than a descriptor. That fixes the hang in t5700,
and should allow t5503 to successfully run on Windows.

In both cases we now also use "test -s" to double-check that
our trace file actually contains output, which should reduce
the possibility of an erroneously passing test.

97a83fa839 upload-pack: remove packet debugging harness
If you set the GIT_DEBUG_SEND_PACK environment variable,
upload-pack will dump lines it receives in the receive_needs
phase to a descriptor. This debugging harness is a strict
subset of what GIT_TRACE_PACKET can do. Let's just drop it
in favor of that.

A few tests used GIT_DEBUG_SEND_PACK to confirm which
objects get sent; we have to adapt them to the new output
format.

3ba9ba8f34 Skip t1300.70 and 71 on msysGit.
These two tests fail on msysGit because /dev/null is an alias for nul on
Windows and when reading the value back from git config the alias does
not match the real filename. Also the HOME environment variable has a
unix-style path but git returns a native equivalent path for '~'. As
these are platform-dependent equivalent results it seems simplest to
skip the test entirely.

Moves the NOT_MINGW prereq from t5503 into the test library.

fadb5156e4 tests: Skip tests in a way that makes sense under TAP
SKIP messages are now part of the TAP plan. A TAP harness now knows
why a particular test was skipped and can report that information. The
non-TAP harness built into Git's test-lib did nothing special with
these messages, and is unaffected by these changes.

8b02c64a3c t5503: GIT_DEBUG_SEND_PACK is not supported on MinGW
The test opens fd 3 and instructs git-upload-pack (via GIT_DEBUG_SEND_PACK)
to log information to that channel.

The way in which new processes are spawned by git on MinGW does not inherit
all file descriptors to the child processes, but only 0, 1, and 2.
The tests in t5503 require that file descriptor 3 is inherited from
git-fetch to git-upload-pack.

A complete implementation is non-trivial and not warranted just to satisfy
this test. Note that the incompleteness applies only to the executables
that use compat/mingw.c; bash and perl (the other important executables
used by git) are complete, of course.

3af828634f tests: do not use implicit "git diff --no-index"
As a general principle, we should not use "git diff" to validate the
results of what git command that is being tested has done. We would not
know if we are testing the command in question, or locating a bug in the
cute hack of "git diff --no-index".

Rather use test_cmp for that purpose.

41fa7d2eae Teach git-fetch to exploit server side automatic tag following
If the remote peer upload-pack process supports the include-tag
protocol extension then we can avoid running a second fetch cycle
on the client side by letting the server send us the annotated tags
along with the objects it is packing for us. In the following graph
we can now fetch both "tag1" and "tag2" on the same connection that
we fetched "master" from the remote when we only have L available
on the local side:

         T - tag1 S - tag2
        / /
   L - o ------ o ------ B
    \ \
     \ \
      origin/master master

The objects for "tag1" are implicitly downloaded without our direct
knowledge. The existing "quickfetch" optimization within git-fetch
discovers that tag1 is complete after the first connection and does
not open a second connection.

cf7f929a10 Teach git-fetch to grab a tag at the same time as a commit
If the situation is the following on the remote and L is the common
base between both sides:

          T - tag1 S - tag2
         / /
    L - A - O - O - B
     \ \
      origin/master master

and we have decided to fetch "master" to acquire the range L..B we
can also nab tag S at the same time during the first connection,
as we can clearly see from the refs advertised by upload-pack that
S^{} = B and master = B.

Unfortunately we still cannot nab T at the same time as we are not
able to see that T^{} will also be in the range implied by L..B.
Such computations must be performed on the remote side (not yet
supported) or on the client side as post-processing (the current
behavior).

This optimization is an extension of the previous one in that it
helps on projects which tend to publish both a new commit and a
new tag, then lay idle for a while before publishing anything else.
Most followers are able to download both the new commit and the new
tag in one connection, rather than two. git.git tends to follow
such patterns with its roughly once-daily updates from Junio.

A protocol extension and additional server side logic would be
necessary to also ensure T is grabbed on the first connection.
