4173b806c7 ls-files: clarify descriptions of status tags for -t
Much like the file selection options we tweaked in the last commit, the
status tags printed with -t had descriptions that were easy to
misunderstand, and for many of the same reasons. Clarify them.

Also, while at it, remove the "semi-deprecated" comment for "git
ls-files -t". The -t option was marked as semi-deprecated in 5bc0e247c4
("Document ls-files -t as semi-obsolete.", 2010-07-28) because:

"git ls-files -t" is [...] badly documented, hence we point the
    users to superior alternatives.
The feature is marked as "semi-obsolete" but not "scheduled for removal"
since it's a plumbing command, scripts might use it, and Git testsuite
already uses it to test the state of the index.

Marking it as obsolete because it was easily misunderstood, which I
think was primarily due to documentation problems, is one strategy, but
I think fixing the documentation is a better option. Especially since
in the intervening time, "git ls-files -t" has become heavily used by
sparse-checkout users where the same confusion just doesn't apply.

2b02d2df2b ls-files: clarify descriptions of file selection options
The previous descriptions of the file selection options were very easy
to misunderstand. For example:

  * "Show cached files in the output"
This could be interpreted as meaning "show files which have been
modified and git-add'ed, i.e. files which have cached changes
    relative to HEAD".

  * "Show deleted files"
This could be interpreted as meaning "for each `git rm $FILE` we
    ran, show me $FILE"

  * "Show modified files"
This could be interpreted as meaning "show files which have been
modified and git-add'ed" or as "show me files that differ from HEAD"
or as "show me undeleted files different from HEAD" (given that
--deleted is a separate option), none of which are correct.

Further, it's not very clear when some options only modify and/or
override other options, as was the case with --ignored, --directory, and
--unmerged (I've seen folks confused by each of them on the mailing
list, sometimes even fellow git developers.)

Tweak these definitions, and the one for --killed, to try to make them
all a bit more clear. Finally, also clarify early on that duplicate
reports for paths are often expected (both when (a) there are multiple
entries for the file in the index -- i.e. when there are conflicts, and
also (b) when the user specifies options that might pick the same file
multiple times, such as `git ls-files --cached --deleted --modified`
when there is a file with an unstaged deletion).

2a34b3181d ls-files: add missing documentation for --resolve-undo option
ls-files' --resolve-undo option has existed ever since 9d9a2f4aba
("resolve-undo: basic tests", 2009-12-25), but was never documented.
However, the option has been referred to in the ls-files manual itself
ever since ce74de931d ("ls-files: introduce "--format" option",
2022-07-23), making its omission a bit jarring. Document this option.

290eada0ac ls-files: support --recurse-submodules --stage
e77aa336f1 ("ls-files: optionally recurse into submodules", 2016-10-10)
taught ls-files the --recurse-submodules argument, but only in a limited
set of circumstances. In particular, --stage was unsupported, perhaps
because there was no repo_find_unique_abbrev(), which was only
introduced in 8bb95572b0 ("sha1-name.c: add
repo_find_unique_abbrev_r()", 2019-04-16). This function is needed for
using --recurse-submodules with --stage.

Now that we have repo_find_unique_abbrev(), teach support for this
combination of arguments.

78087097b8 ls-files: add --sparse option
Existing callers to 'git ls-files' are expecting file names, not
directories. It is best to expand a sparse index to show all of the
contained files in this case.

However, expert users may want to inspect the contents of the index
itself including which directories are sparse. Add a --sparse option to
allow users to request this information.

During testing, I noticed that options such as --modified did not affect
the output when the files in question were outside the sparse-checkout
definition. Tests are added to document this preexisting behavior and
how it remains unchanged with the sparse index and the --sparse option.

93a7d9835f ls-files.c: add --deduplicate option
During a merge conflict, the name of a file may appear multiple
times in "git ls-files" output, once for each stage. If you use
both `--delete` and `--modify` at the same time, the output may
mention a deleted file twice.

When none of the '-t', '-u', or '-s' options is in use, these
duplicate entries do not add much value to the output.

Introduce a new '--deduplicate' option to suppress them.

cda34e0d0c doc: clarify that --abbrev=<n> is about the minimum length
Early text written in 2006 explains the "--abbrev=<n>" option to
"show only a partial prefix", without saying that the length of the
partial prefix is not necessarily the number given to the option to
ensure that the output names the object uniquely.

Update documentation for the diff family of commands, "blame",
"branch --verbose", "ls-files" and "ls-tree" to stress that the
short prefix must uniquely refer to an object, and <n> is merely
the mininum number of hexdigits used in the prefix.

acbfae32a3 doc: --recurse-submodules mostly applies to active submodules
The documentation refers to "initialized" or "populated" submodules,
to explain which submodules are affected by '--recurse-submodules', but
the real terminology here is 'active' submodules. Update the
documentation accordingly.

Some terminology:
- Active is defined in gitsubmodules(7), it only involves the
  configuration variables 'submodule.active', 'submodule.<name>.active'
  and 'submodule.<name>.url'. The function
submodule.c::is_submodule_active checks that a submodule is active.
- Populated means that the submodule's working tree is present (and the
gitfile correctly points to the submodule repository), i.e. either the
superproject was cloned with ` --recurse-submodules`, or the user ran
`git submodule update --init`, or `git submodule init [<path>]` and
`git submodule update [<path>]` separately which populated the
submodule working tree. This does not involve the 3 configuration
  variables above.
- Initialized (at least in the context of the man pages involved in this
patch) means both "populated" and "active" as defined above, i.e. what
  `git submodule update --init` does.

The --recurse-submodules option mostly affects active submodules. An
exception is `git fetch` where the option affects populated submodules.
As a consequence, in `git pull --recurse-submodules` the fetch affects
populated submodules, but the resulting working tree update only affects
active submodules.

In the documentation of `git-pull`, let's distinguish between the
fetching part which affects populated submodules, and the updating of
worktrees, which only affects active submodules.

da9ca955a7 doc/ls-files: put nested list for "-t" option into block
The description for the "-t" option contains a sub-list of all of the
possible file status outputs. But because of the newline separating that
list from the description paragraph, asciidoc treats the sub-list
entries as a continuation of the overall options list, rather than as
children of the "-t" description.

We could fix it by adding a "+" before the sub-list to connect it to the
rest of the "-t" text. But using a pair of "--" to delimit the block is
perhaps more readable, and may have better compatibility with
asciidoctor, as in 39a869b2f2 (Documentation/rev-list-options: wrap
--date=<format> block with "--", 2019-03-30).

The extra blank line comes from 5bc0e247c4 (Document ls-files -t as
semi-obsolete., 2010-07-28), but the problem actually seems older than
that. Before then, we did:

  -t:: some text...
    H:: cached
    M:: unmerged
    etc...

but asciidoc also treats that as one big list. So this problem seems to
have been around forever.

76a8788c14 doc: keep first level section header in upper case
When formatted as a man page, 1st section header is always in upper
case even if we write it otherwise. Make all 1st section headers
uppercase to keep it close to the final output.

This does affect html since case is kept there, but I still think it's
a good idea to maintain a consistent style for 1st section headers.

Some sections perhaps should become second sections instead, where
case is kept, and for better organization. I will update if anyone has
suggestions about this.

While at there I also make some header more consistent (e.g. examples

75a6315f74 ls-files: add pathspec matching for submodules
Pathspecs can be a bit tricky when trying to apply them to submodules.
The main challenge is that the pathspecs will be with respect to the
superproject and not with respect to paths in the submodule. The
approach this patch takes is to pass in the identical pathspec from the
superproject to the submodule in addition to the submodule-prefix, which
is the path from the root of the superproject to the submodule, and then
we can compare an entry in the submodule prepended with the
submodule-prefix to the pathspec in order to determine if there is a
match.

This patch also permits the pathspec logic to perform a prefix match against
submodules since a pathspec could refer to a file inside of a submodule.
Due to limitations in the wildmatch logic, a prefix match is only done
literally. If any wildcard character is encountered we'll simply punt
and produce a false positive match. More accurate matching will be done
once inside the submodule. This is due to the superproject not knowing
what files could exist in the submodule.

a7630bd427 ls-files: add eol diagnostics
When working in a cross-platform environment, a user may want to
check if text files are stored normalized in the repository and
if .gitattributes are set appropriately.

Make it possible to let Git show the line endings in the index and
in the working tree and the effective text/eol attributes.

The end of line ("eolinfo") are shown like this:

"-text" binary (or with bare CR) file
"none" text file without any EOL
    "lf" text file with LF
    "crlf" text file with CRLF
"mixed" text file with mixed line endings.

The effective text/eol attribute is one of these:

    "", "-text", "text", "text=auto", "text eol=lf", "text eol=crlf"

git ls-files --eol gives an output like this:

    i/none w/none attr/text=auto t/t5100/empty
    i/-text w/-text attr/-text t/test-binary-2.png
    i/lf w/lf attr/text eol=lf t/t5100/rfc2047-info-0007
    i/lf w/crlf attr/text eol=crlf doit.bat
    i/mixed w/mixed attr/ locale/XX.po

to show what eol convention is used in the data in the index ('i'),
and in the working tree ('w'), and what attribute is in effect,
for each path that is shown.

Add test cases in t0027.

48bb914ed6 doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pages
The point of these sections is generally to:

  1. Give credit where it is due.

  2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or
     file bug reports.

But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they
are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer
can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the
correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you
wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and
incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody
useless.

So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except
git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list
for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section
to give credit to the major contributors and point to
shortlog and blame for more information.

Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can
follow that to the main git manpage.

4fdff3d210 Documentation: show-files is now called git-ls-files
Amazingly, a reference to 'show files' survived from the core command
documentation introduced in c64b9b8 (Reference documentation for the
core git commands., 2005-05-05)!

However, the tool is now called git-ls-files.

0b444cdb19 Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughout
The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it
only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax:
both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist.

The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent
in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands.,
2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants.

Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell,
git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and
git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the
$PATH.

500348aa68 ls-files: unbreak "ls-files -i"
Commit b5227d8 changed the behavior of "ls-files" with
respect to includes, but accidentally broke the "-i" option
The original behavior was:

  1. if no "-i" is given, cull all results according to --exclude*
  2. if "-i" is given, show the inverse of (1)

The broken behavior was:

  1. if no "-i" is given:
     a. for "-o", cull results according to --exclude*
     b. for index files, always show all
  2. if "-i" is given:
     a. for "-o", shows the inverse of (1a)
     b. for index files, always show all

The fixed behavior keeps the new (1b) behavior introduced
by b5227d8, but fixes the (2b) behavior to show only ignored
files, not all files.

This patch also tweaks the documentation. The original text
was somewhat obscure in the first place, but it is also now
inaccurate (the relationship between (1b) and (2b) is not
quite a "reverse").

ba020ef5eb manpages: italicize git command names (which were in teletype font)
The names of git commands are not meant to be entered at the
