f8d510ed0b t/t3NNN: allow local submodules
To prepare for the default value of `protocol.file.allow` to change to
"user", ensure tests that rely on local submodules can initialize them
over the file protocol.

Tests that only need to interact with submodules in a limited capacity
have individual Git commands annotated with the appropriate
configuration via `-c`. Tests that interact with submodules a handful of
times use `test_config_global` instead. Test scripts that rely on
submodules throughout use a `git config --global` during a setup test
towards the beginning of the script.

1d758728fb tests: don't assume a .git/info for .git/info/exclude
Change those tests that assumed that a .git/info directory would be
created for them when writing .git/info/exclude to explicitly create
the directory by setting "TEST_CREATE_REPO_NO_TEMPLATE=1" before
sourcing test-lib.sh, and using the "--template=" argument to "git
clone" and "git init".

In the case of ".git/modules/sub1/info" we deviate from the
established pattern in this and preceding commits of passing a
"--template=" and doing a "mkdir .git/info".

In that case "git checkout" will run the "submodule--helper clone",
and both e.g. "git submodule update --init" and "git checkout" do not
have a way to pass down options to the eventual "git init" or "git
clone". Let's instead assume that the submodule was populated with our
default templates, remove them, and then run the "mkdir".

5b0ac09fb1 lib-submodule-update: pass 'test_must_fail' as an argument
When we run a test helper function in test_submodule_switch_common(), we
sometimes specify a whole helper function as the $command. When we do
this, in some test cases, we just mark the whole function with
`test_must_fail`. However, it's possible that the helper function might
fail earlier or later than expected due to an introduced bug. If this
happens, then the test case will still report as passing but it should
really be marked as failing since it didn't actually display the
intended behaviour.

Instead of invoking `test_must_fail $command`, pass the string
"test_must_fail" as the second argument in case where the git command is
expected to fail.

When $command is a helper function, the parent function calling
test_submodule_switch_common() is test_submodule_switch_func(). For all
test_submodule_switch_func() invocations, increase the granularity of
the argument test helper function by prefixing the git invocation which is
meant to fail with the second argument like this:

	$2 git checkout "$1"

In the other cases, test_submodule_switch() and
test_submodule_forced_switch(), instead of passing in the git command
directly, wrap it using the git_test_func() and pass the git arguments
using the global variable $gitcmd. Unfortunately, since closures aren't
a thing in shell scripts, the global variable is necessary. Another
unfortunate result is that the "git_test_func" will used as the test
case name when $command is printed but it's worth it for the cleaner
code.

Finally, as an added bonus, `test_must_fail` will now only run on git
commands.

aa06180ac9 lib-submodule-update: prepend "git" to $command
Since all invocations of test_submodule_forced_switch() are git
commands, automatically prepend "git" before invoking
test_submodule_switch_common().

Similarly, many invocations of test_submodule_switch() are also git
commands so automatically prepend "git" before invoking
test_submodule_switch_common() as well.

Finally, for invocations of test_submodule_switch() that invoke a custom
function, rename the old function to test_submodule_switch_func().

This is necessary because in a future commit, we will be adding some
logic that needs to distinguish between an invocation of a plain git
comamnd and an invocation of a test helper function.

c6d8ccf3a2 wt-status: actually ignore submodules when requested
Since ff6f1f564 (submodule-config: lazy-load a repository's .gitmodules
file, 2017-08-03) rebase interactive fails if there are any submodules
with unstaged changes which have been configured with a value for
'submodule.<name>.ignore' in the repository's config.

This is due to how configured values of 'submodule.<name>.ignore' are
handled in addition to a change in how the submodule config is loaded.
When the diff machinery hits a submodule (gitlink as well as a
corresponding entry in the submodule subsystem) it will read the value
of 'submodule.<name>.ignore' stored in the repository's config and if
the config is present it will clear the 'IGNORE_SUBMODULES' (which is
the flag explicitly requested by rebase interactive),
'IGNORE_UNTRACKED_IN_SUBMODULES', and 'IGNORE_DIRTY_SUBMODULES' diff
flags and then set one of them based on the configured value.

Historically this wasn't a problem because the submodule subsystem
wasn't initialized because the .gitmodules file wasn't explicitly loaded
by the rebase interactive command. So when the diff machinery hit a
submodule it would skip over reading any configured values of
'submodule.<name>.ignore'.

In order to preserve the behavior of submodules being ignored by rebase
interactive, also set the 'OVERRIDE_SUBMODULE_CONFIG' diff flag when
submodules are requested to be ignored when checking for unstaged
changes.

5423d2e700 submodules: allow empty working-tree dirs in merge/cherry-pick
When a submodule is being merged or cherry-picked into a working
tree that already contains a corresponding empty directory, do not
record a conflict.

One situation where this bug appears is:

- Commit 1 adds a submodule
- Commit 2 removes that submodule and re-adds it into a subdirectory
       (sub1 to sub1/sub1).
- Commit 3 adds an unrelated file.

Now the user checks out commit 1 (first deinitializing the submodule),
and attempts to cherry-pick commit 3. Previously, this would fail,
because the incoming submodule sub1/sub1 would falsely conflict with
the empty sub1 directory.

This patch ignores the empty sub1 directory, fixing the bug. We only
ignore the empty directory if the object being emplaced is a
submodule, which expects an empty directory.

c7e69168cf rebase: add t3426 for submodule updates
Test that the rebase command updates the work tree as expected for
changes which don't result in conflicts. To make that work add two
helper functions that add a commit only touching files and then
revert it. This allows to rebase the target commit over these two
and to compare the result.

Set KNOWN_FAILURE_NOFF_MERGE_DOESNT_CREATE_EMPTY_SUBMODULE_DIR to
document that "replace directory with submodule" fails for an
interactive rebase because a directory "sub1" already exists.
