619e360428 rebase: support --no-autostash
This is documented as an option but we don't actually accept it.
Support it so that it is possible to override the "rebase.autostash"
config variable.

22946a9426 rebase: silence "git checkout" for noop rebase
When the branch to be rebased is already up to date, we
"git checkout" the branch, print an "up to date" message,
and end the rebase early. However, our checkout may print
"Switched to branch 'foo'" or "Already on 'foo'", even if
the user has asked for "--quiet".

We should avoid printing these messages at all, "--quiet" or
no. Since the rebase is a noop, this checkout can be seen as
optimizing out these other two checkout operations (that
happen in a real rebase):

  1. Moving to the detached HEAD to start the rebase; we
always feed "-q" to checkout there, and instead rely on
our own custom message (which respects --quiet).

  2. Finishing a rebase, where we move to the final branch.
Here we actually use update-ref rather than
     git-checkout, and produce no messages.

1e0dacdbdb rebase: omit patch-identical commits with --fork-point
When the `--fork-point` argument was added to `git rebase`, we changed
the value of $upstream to be the fork point instead of the point from
which we want to rebase. When $orig_head..$upstream is empty this does
not change the behaviour, but when there are new changes in the upstream
we are no longer checking if any of them are patch-identical with
changes in $upstream..$orig_head.

Fix this by introducing a new variable to hold the fork point and using
this to restrict the range as an extra (negative) revision argument so
that the set of desired revisions becomes (in fork-point mode):

	git rev-list --cherry-pick --right-only \
		$upstream...$orig_head ^$fork_point

This allows us to correctly handle the scenario where we have the
following topology:

	    C --- D --- E <- dev
	   /
	  B  <- master@{1}
	 /
	o --- B' --- C* --- D* <- master

where:
- B' is a fixed-up version of B that is not patch-identical with B;
- C* and D* are patch-identical to C and D respectively and conflict
  textually if applied in the wrong order;
- E depends textually on D.

The correct result of `git rebase master dev` is that B is identified as
the fork-point of dev and master, so that C, D, E are the commits that
need to be replayed onto master; but C and D are patch-identical with C*
and D* and so can be dropped, so that the end result is:

	o --- B' --- C* --- D* --- E <- dev

If the fork-point is not identified, then picking B onto a branch
containing B' results in a conflict and if the patch-identical commits
are not correctly identified then picking C onto a branch containing D
(or equivalently D*) results in a conflict.

This change allows us to handle both of these cases, where previously we
either identified the fork-point (with `--fork-point`) but not the
patch-identical commits *or* (with `--no-fork-point`) identified the
patch-identical commits but not the fact that master had been rewritten.

e4244eb395 rebase -i: handle "Nothing to do" case with autostash
When a user invokes

  $ git rebase -i @~3

with dirty files and rebase.autostash turned on, and exits the $EDITOR
with an empty buffer, the autostash fails to apply. Although the primary
focus of rr/rebase-autostash was to get the git-rebase--backend.sh
scripts to return control to git-rebase.sh, it missed this case in
git-rebase--interactive.sh. Since this case is unlike the other cases
which return control for housekeeping, assign it a special return status
and handle that return value explicitly in git-rebase.sh.

728fc79c00 git-rebase.sh: use the $( ... ) construct for command substitution
The Git CodingGuidelines prefer the $(...) construct for command
substitution instead of using the backquotes `...`.

The backquoted form is the traditional method for command
substitution, and is supported by POSIX. However, all but the
simplest uses become complicated quickly. In particular, embedded
command substitutions and/or the use of double quotes require
careful escaping with the backslash character.

The patch was generated by:

for _f in $(find . -name "*.sh")
do
   sed -i 's@`\(.*\)`@$(\1)@g' ${_f}
done

and then carefully proof-read.

8cd65967fe Revert "rebase: fix run_specific_rebase's use of "return" on FreeBSD"
This reverts commit 99855ddf4b.

The workaround 99855ddf introduced to deal with problematic
"return" statements in scripts run by "dot" commands located
inside functions only handles one part of the problem. The
issue has now been addressed by not using "return" statements
in this way in the git-rebase--*.sh scripts.

This workaround is therefore no longer necessary, so clean
up the code by reverting it.

bb3f45838b rebase: fix fork-point with zero arguments
When no arguments are specified, $switch_to is empty so we end up
passing the empty string to "git merge-base --fork-point", which causes
an error. git-rebase carries on at this point, but in fact we have
failed to apply the fork-point operation.

It turns out that the test in t3400 that was meant to test this didn't
actually need the fork-point behaviour, so enhance it to make sure that
the fork-point is applied correctly. The modified test fails without
the change to git-rebase.sh in this patch.

ad8261d212 rebase: use reflog to find common base with upstream
Commit 15a147e (rebase: use @{upstream} if no upstream specified,
2011-02-09) says:

Make it default to 'git rebase @{upstream}'. That is also what
'git pull [--rebase]' defaults to, so it only makes sense that
'git rebase' defaults to the same thing.

but that isn't actually the case. Since commit d44e712 (pull: support
rebased upstream + fetch + pull --rebase, 2009-07-19), pull has actually
chosen the most recent reflog entry which is an ancestor of the current
branch if it can find one.

Add a '--fork-point' argument to git-rebase that can be used to trigger
this behaviour. This option is turned on by default if no non-option
arguments are specified on the command line, otherwise we treat an
upstream specified on the command-line literally.

99855ddf4b rebase: fix run_specific_rebase's use of "return" on FreeBSD
Since a1549e10, git-rebase--am.sh uses the shell's "return" statement, to
mean "return from the current file inclusion", which is POSIXly correct,
but badly interpreted on FreeBSD, which returns from the current
function, hence skips the finish_rebase statement that follows the file
inclusion.

Make the use of "return" portable by using the file inclusion as the last
statement of a function.

587947750b rebase: implement --[no-]autostash and rebase.autostash
This new feature allows a rebase to be executed on a dirty worktree or
index. It works by creating a temporary "dangling merge commit" out
of the worktree and index changes (via 'git stash create'), and
automatically applying it after a successful rebase or abort.

rebase stores the SHA-1 hex of the temporary merge commit, along with
the rest of the rebase state, in either
.git/{rebase-merge,rebase-apply}/autostash depending on the kind of
rebase. Since $state_dir is automatically removed at the end of a
successful rebase or abort, so is the autostash.

The advantage of this approach is that we do not affect the normal
stash's reflogs, making the autostash invisible to the end-user. This
means that you can use 'git stash' during a rebase as usual.

When the autostash application results in a conflict, we push
$state_dir/autostash onto the normal stash and remove $state_dir
ending the rebase. The user can inspect the stash, and pop or drop at
any time.

Most significantly, this feature means that a caller like pull (with
pull.rebase set to true) can easily be patched to remove the
require_clean_work_tree restriction.

f5f758a5df rebase: prepare to do generic housekeeping
On successful completion of a rebase in git-rebase--$backend.sh, the
$backend script cleans up on its own and exits. The cleanup routine
is however, independent of the $backend, and each $backend script
unnecessarily duplicates this work:

    rm -rf "$state_dir"
    git gc --auto

Prepare git-rebase.sh for later patches that return control from each
$backend script back to us, for performing this generic cleanup
routine. The code that this patch adds is currently unreachable, and
will only start to be used when git-rebase--$backend.sh scripts are
taught to return control in later patches.

Another advantage is that git-rebase.sh can implement a generic
finish_rebase() to possibly do additional tasks in addition to the
cleanup.

When we 'git rebase $upstream', git uses 'rev-parse --verify
$current_branch' to find ORIG_HEAD. But if $current_branch
is ambiguous, 'rev-parse --verify' emits a warning and returns
a SHA1 anyway. When the wrong ambiguous choice is used,
git-rebase fails non-gracefully: it emits a warning about
failing to lock $current_branch, an error about being unable to
checkout $current_branch again, and it might even decide the
rebase is a fast-forward when it is not.

In the 'rebase $upstream' case, we already know the unambiguous
spelling of $current_branch is "HEAD". Fix git-rebase to find
$orig_head unambiguously.

c021fbf615 rebase: remove obsolete and unused LONG_USAGE which breaks xgettext
Since there is a modern OPTIONS_SPEC variable in use in this script,

Remove them.

In addition, the obsolete LONG_USAGE variable has the following

Allow --root to be specified to rebase -i without --onto, making it
possible to edit and re-order all commits right back to the root(s).

If there is a conflict to be resolved when applying the first change,
the user will expect a sane index and working tree to get sensible
behaviour from git-diff and friends, so create a sentinel commit with an
empty tree to rebase onto. Automatically squash the sentinel with any
commits rebased directly onto it, so they end up as root commits in
their own right and retain their authorship and commit message.

Implicitly use rebase -i for non-interactive rebase of --root without

During an interactive rebase session, it is sometimes desirable to
run tests on each commit in the resulting history. This can be done
by adding "exec <test command>" when editing the insn sheet, but the

By passing "--exec <cmd>" from the command line, automatically add
these "exec" lines after each commit in the final history. To work

90e1818f9a git-rebase: add keep_empty flag
Add a command line switch to git-rebase to allow a user the ability to specify
that they want to keep any commits in a series that are empty.

When git-rebase's type is am, then this option will automatically keep any
commit that has a tree object identical to its parent.

This patch changes the default behavior of interactive rebases as well. With
this patch, git-rebase -i will produce a revision set passed to
git-revision-editor, in which empty commits are commented out. Empty commits
may be kept manually by uncommenting them. If the new --keep-empty option is

035b5bf643 pull,rebase: handle GIT_WORK_TREE better
You can't currently run git-pull or git-rebase from outside
of the work tree, even with GIT_WORK_TREE set, due to an
overeager require_work_tree function. Commit e2eb527
documents this problem and provides the infrastructure for a
fix, but left it to later commits to audit and update
individual scripts.

Changing these scripts to use require_work_tree_exists is
easy to verify. We immediately call cd_to_toplevel, anyway.
Therefore no matter which function we use, the state
afterwards is one of:

  1. We have a work tree, and we are at the top level.

  2. We don't have a work tree, and we have died.

The only catch is that we must also make sure no code that
ran before the cd_to_toplevel assumed that we were already
in the working tree.

In this case, we will only have included shell libraries and
called set_reflog_action, neither of which care about the
current working directory at all.

is the the branch that is being rebased (it is the latter)? Although

The error message was introduced recently by 4ac5356c (rebase: give a

acceptable because the usage text was just two lines. But 45e2acf3

because the usage text is now 35 lines.

53f2ffa80c rebase: write a reflog entry when finishing
When we finish a rebase, our detached HEAD is at the final
result. We update the original branch ref with this result,
and then point the HEAD symbolic ref at the updated branch.
We write a reflog for the branch update, but not for the
update of HEAD.

Because we're already at the final result on the detached
HEAD, moving to the branch actually doesn't change our
commit sha1 at all. So in that sense, a reflog entry would
be pointless.

However, humans do read reflogs, and an entry saying "rebase
finished: returning to refs/heads/master" can be helpful in
understanding what is going on.

45e2acf3d3 rebase: define options in OPTIONS_SPEC
Interactive rebase used to have its own command line processing. Since
it used the 'git rev-parse --parseopt' functionality exposed through

command line processing was factored out into git-rebase.sh in cf432ca
(rebase: factor out command line option processing, 2011-02-06), this
flexibility was lost. Give back that flexibility to interactive and

15a147e618 rebase: use @{upstream} if no upstream specified
'git rebase' without arguments is currently not supported. Make it
default to 'git rebase @{upstream}'. That is also what 'git pull
[--rebase]' defaults to, so it only makes sense that 'git rebase'
defaults to the same thing.

Defaulting to @{upstream} will make it possible to run e.g. 'git
rebase -i' without arguments, which is probably a quite common use
case. It also improves the scenario where you have multiple branches
that rebase against a remote-tracking branch, where you currently have
to choose between the extra network delay of 'git pull' or the
slightly awkward keys to enter 'git rebase @{u}'.

The error reporting when no upstream is configured for the current
branch or when no branch is checked out is reused from git-pull.sh. A
function is extracted into git-parse-remote.sh for this purpose.

Note that non-interactive rebase stores the sha1 of the original head

from head instead. This protects users who upgraded git while they had

9765b6abeb rebase: align variable content
Make sure to interpret variables with the same name in the same way in
git-rebase.sh and git-rebase--interactive.sh. This will make it easier
to factor out code from git-rebase.sh to git-rebase--interactive and

6bb4e485cf rebase: align variable names
git-rebase--interactive.sh will soon be sourced from
git-rebase.sh. Align the names of variables used in these scripts to
prepare for that.

Some names in git-rebase--interactive.sh, such as "author_script" and
"amend", are currently used in their upper case form to refer to a
file and in their lower case form to refer to something else. In these
cases, change the name of the existing lower case variable and
downcase the name of the variable that refers to the file.

Currently, git-rebase.sh uses mostly lower case variable names, while
git-rebase--interactive.sh uses mostly upper case variable names. For
consistency, downcase all variables, not just the ones that will be
shared between the two script files.

95135b06fe rebase: stricter check of standalone sub command
The sub commands '--continue', '--skip' or '--abort' may only be used
standalone according to the documentation. Other options following the
sub command are currently not accepted, but options preceeding them
are. For example, 'git rebase --continue -v' is not accepted, while
'git rebase -v --continue' is. Tighten up the check and allow no other
options when one of these sub commands are used.

Only check that it is standalone for non-interactive rebase for
now. Once the command line processing for interactive rebase has been
replaced by the command line processing in git-rebase.sh, this check
will also apply to interactive rebase.

99de0640f2 rebase: improve detection of rebase in progress
Detect early on if a rebase is in progress and what type of rebase it
is (interactive, merge-based or am-based). This prepares for further
refactoring where am-based rebase will be dispatched to
git-rebase--am.sh and merge-based rebase will be dispatched to
git-rebase--merge.sh.

The idea is to use the same variables whether the type of rebase was
detected from rebase-apply/ or rebase-merge/ directories or from the
command line options. This will make the code more readable and will
later also make it easier to dispatch to the type-specific scripts.

Also show a consistent error message independent of the type of rebase
that was in progress and remove the obsolete wording about being in
the middle of a 'patch application', since that (an existing
"$GIT_DIR"/rebase-apply/applying) aborts 'git rebase' at an earlier
stage.

10ffca7db2 rebase: read state outside loop
The 'onto_name' state used in 'git rebase --merge' is currently read
once for each commit that need to be applied. It doesn't change
between each iteration, however, so it should be moved out of the
loop. This also makes the code more readable. Also remove the unused
variable 'end'.

02ac45fa62 rebase: refactor reading of state
The code reading the state saved in $merge_dir or $rebase_dir is
currently spread out in many places, making it harder to read and to
introduce additional state. Extract this code into one method that
reads the state. Only extract the code associated with the state that
is written when the rebase is initiated. Leave the state that changes
for each commmit, at least for now.

Currently, when resuming a merge-based rebase using --continue or
--skip, move_to_original_branch (via finish_rb_merge) will be called
without head_name and orig_head set. These variables are then lazily
read in move_to_original_branch if head_name is not set (together with
onto, which is unnecessarily read again). Change this by always
eagerly reading the state, for both am-based and merge-based rebase,
in the --continue and --skip cases. Note that this does not change the
behavior for am-based rebase, which read the state eagerly even before
this commit.

Reading the state eagerly means that part of the state will sometimes
be read unnecessarily. One example is when the rebase is continued,
but stops again at another merge conflict. Another example is when the
rebase is aborted. However, since both of these cases involve user
interaction, the delay is hopefully not noticeable. The
call_merge/continue_merge loop is not affected.

4ac5356c62 rebase: give a better error message for bogus branch
When you give a non-existent branch to git-rebase, it spits
out the usage. This can be confusing, since you may
understand the usage just fine, but simply have made a
mistake in the branch name.

Before:

  $ git rebase origin bogus
  Usage: git rebase ...

After:

  $ git rebase origin bogus
  fatal: no such branch: bogus
  Usage: git rebase ...

3b21a438c9 rebase: use explicit "--" with checkout
In the case of a ref/pathname conflict, checkout will
already do the right thing and checkout the ref. However,
for a non-existant ref, this has two advantages:

  1. If a file with that pathname exists, rebase will
refresh the file from the index and then rebase the
current branch instead of producing an error.

  2. If no such file exists, the error message using an
     explicit "--" is better:

       # before
$ git rebase -i origin bogus
error: pathspec 'bogus' did not match any file(s) known to git.
       Could not checkout bogus

       # after
$ git rebase -i origin bogus
       fatal: invalid reference: bogus
       Could not checkout bogus

The problems seem to be trigger-able only through "git
rebase -i", as regular git-rebase checks the validity of the
branch parameter as a ref very early on. However, it doesn't
hurt to be defensive.

If rebase.stat is set to true, a diffstat should be displayed. If it is
not set, it should default to false. However, if it is explicitly set to
false (or other value), a diffstat is still displayed, which is probably
not what most users would expect. Show diffstat only if it is set
