Reimplement the `bisect_state()` shell functions in C and also add a
subcommand `--bisect-state` to `git-bisect--helper` to call them from
git-bisect.sh .
Using `--bisect-state` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell
function to C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand will be retired and will be called by some
other methods.
`bisect_head()` is only called from `bisect_state()`, thus it is not
required to introduce another subcommand.
Note that the `eval` in the changed line of `git-bisect.sh` cannot be
dropped: it is necessary because the `rev` and the `tail`
variables may contain multiple, quoted arguments that need to be
passed to `bisect--helper` (without the quotes, naturally).

Add the subcommand to `git bisect--helper` and call it from
git-bisect.sh.
With the conversion of `bisect_auto_next()` from shell to C in a
previous commit, `bisect_start()` can now be fully ported to C.
So let's complete the `--bisect-start` subcommand of
`git bisect--helper` so that it fully implements `bisect_start()`,
and let's use this subcommand in `git-bisect.sh` instead of
`bisect_start()`.

In case of an invalid "arg" when "has_double_dash" is false, the old
code would "break" out of the argument loop.
In the new C code though, `oid_to_hex(&oid)` is unconditonally
appended to "revs". This is wrong first because "oid" is junk as
`get_oid(commit_id, &oid)` failed and second because it doesn't break
out of the argument loop.
Not breaking out of the argument loop means that "arg" is then not
treated as a path restriction (which is wrong).

bisect_auto_next() function returns an enum bisect_error type as whole
`git bisect` can exit with an error code when bisect_next() does.

that opens a file for writing a message and closes it and a

The argv_array API is useful for not just managing argv but any
"vector" (NULL-terminated array) of strings, and has seen adoption
to a certain degree. It has been renamed to "strvec" to reduce the
barrier to adoption.

Upon seeing a merge commit when bisecting, this option may be used to
follow only the first parent.
In detecting regressions introduced through the merging of a branch, the
merge commit will be identified as introduction of the bug and its
ancestors will be ignored.
This option is particularly useful in avoiding false positives when a
merged branch contained broken or non-buildable commits, but the merge
itself was OK.

cmd_bisect__helper() is intended as a temporary shim layer serving as an
interface for git-bisect.sh. This function and git-bisect.sh should
eventually be replaced by a C implementation, cmd_bisect(), serving as
an entrypoint for all "git bisect ..." shell commands: cmd_bisect() will
only parse the first token following "git bisect", and dispatch the
remaining args to the appropriate function ["bisect_start()",
"bisect_next()", etc.].
Thus, cmd_bisect__helper() should not be responsible for parsing flags
like --no-checkout. Instead, let the --no-checkout flag remain in the
argv array, so it may be evaluated alongside the other options already
parsed by bisect_start().

The "argc" and "argv" names made sense when the struct was argv_array,
but now they're just confusing. Let's rename them to "nr" (which we use
for counts elsewhere) and "v" (which is rather terse, but reads well
when combined with typical variable names like "args.v").
Note that we have to update all of the callers immediately. Playing
tricks with the preprocessor is hard here, because we wouldn't want to
rewrite unrelated tokens.

Code which split an argv_array call across multiple lines, like:
argv_array_pushl(&args, "one argument",
"another argument", "and more",
NULL);
was recently mechanically renamed to use strvec, which results in
mis-matched indentation like:
strvec_pushl(&args, "one argument",
"another argument", "and more",
NULL);
Let's fix these up to align the arguments with the opening paren. I did
this manually by sifting through the results of:
git jump grep 'strvec_.*,$'
and liberally applying my editor's auto-format. Most of the changes are
of the form shown above, though I also normalized a few that had
originally used a single-tab indentation (rather than our usual style of
aligning with the open paren). I also rewrapped a couple of obvious
cases (e.g., where previously too-long lines became short enough to fit
on one), but I wasn't aggressive about it. In cases broken to three or
more lines, the grouping of arguments is sometimes meaningful, and it
wasn't worth my time or reviewer time to ponder each case individually.

We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec
consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once,
or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits.
Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable
to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different
names is OK).
This patch converts all of the files in builtin/ to keep the diff to a
manageable size.
The conversion was done purely mechanically with:

s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g;

and then selectively staging files with "git add builtin/". We'll deal

The code to parse "git bisect start" command line was lax in
validating the arguments.

06f5608c14 (bisect--helper: `bisect_start` shell function partially in C,
2019-01-02) adds a lax parser for `git bisect start` which could result
in a segfault under a bad syntax call for start with custom terms.
Detect if there are enough arguments left in the command line to use for
--term-{old,good,new,bad} and abort with the same syntax error the original
implementation will show if not.
While at it, remove an unnecessary (and incomplete) check for unknown
arguments and make sure to add a test to avoid regressions.

Since we want to get rid of git-bisect.sh, it would be necessary to
convert those exit() calls to return statements so that errors can be
reported.
Emulate try catch in C by converting `exit(<positive-value>)` to
`return <negative-value>`. Follow POSIX conventions to return
<negative-value> to indicate error.
Code that turns BISECT_INTERNAL_SUCCESS_MERGE_BASE (-11)
to BISECT_OK (0) from `check_good_are_ancestors_of_bad()` has been moved to
`cmd_bisect__helper()`.
Update all callers to handle the error returns.

Since we want to get rid of git-bisect.sh, it would be necessary
to convert bisect.c exit() calls to return statements so
that errors can be reported. Let's prepare for that by making
it possible to return different error codes than just 0 or 1.
Different error codes might enable a bisecting script calling the
bisect command that uses this function to do different things
depending on the exit status of the bisect command.

decide_next() helper function.
This removes some goto statements and makes the code simpler,
clearer and easier to understand.
While at it `bad_ref` and `good_glob` are not const any more

In 5e82c3dd22 (bisect--helper: `bisect_reset` shell function in C,
2019-01-02), the `git bisect reset` subcommand was ported to C. When the
call to `git checkout` failed, an error message was reported to the
user.
However, this error message used the `strbuf` that had just been
released already. Let's switch that around: first use it, then release
it.

strict argc checks already.

Reimplement `bisect_next_check` shell function in C and add
`bisect-next-check` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from
git-bisect.sh .
`bisect_voc` shell function is no longer useful now and is replaced by
using a char *[] of "new|bad" and "good|old" values.
Using `--bisect-next-check` is a temporary measure to port shell
function to C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will
be called by some other methods.

`check-and-set-terms` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from

Using `--check-and-set-terms` subcommand is a temporary measure to port
shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more
functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its
implementation will be called by some other methods.
check_and_set_terms() sets and receives two global variables namely
TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD in the shell script. Luckily the file BISECT_TERMS
also contains the value of those variables so its appropriate to evoke the
method get_terms() after calling the subcommand so that it retrieves the
value of TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD from the file BISECT_TERMS. The two
global variables are passed as arguments to the subcommand.

Using `--bisect-write` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell
function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will
be called by some other methods.
Note: bisect_write() uses two variables namely TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD
from the global shell script thus we need to pass it to the subcommand
using the arguments. We then store them in a struct bisect_terms and
pass the memory address around functions.
Add a log_commit() helper function to write the contents of the commit message
header to a file which will be re-used in future parts of the code as
well.
Also introduce a function free_terms() to free the memory of `struct
bisect_terms` and set_terms() to set the values of members in `struct
bisect_terms`.
