d43b99322b convert trivial uses of strncmp() to skip_prefix()
As with the previous patch, using skip_prefix() is more readable and
less error-prone than a raw strncmp(), because it avoids a
manually-computed length. These cases differ from the previous patch
that uses starts_with() because they care about the value after the
matched prefix.

We can convert these to use skip_prefix() by introducing an extra
variable to hold the out-pointer.

Note in the case in ws.c that to get rid of the magic number "9"
completely, we also switch out "len" for recomputing the pointer
difference. These are equivalent because "len" is always "ep - string".

22f9b7f3f5 strvec: convert builtin/ callers away from argv_array name
We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec
consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once,
or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits.
Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable
to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different
names is OK).

This patch converts all of the files in builtin/ to keep the diff to a
manageable size.

The conversion was done purely mechanically with:

  git ls-files '*.c' '*.h' |
  xargs perl -i -pe '
    s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g;
    s/argv_array/strvec/g;
  '

and then selectively staging files with "git add builtin/". We'll deal
with any indentation/style fallouts separately.

1cf01a34ea consistently use "fallthrough" comments in switches
Gcc 7 adds -Wimplicit-fallthrough, which can warn when a
switch case falls through to the next case. The general idea
is that the compiler can't tell if this was intentional or
not, so you should annotate any intentional fall-throughs as
such, leaving it to complain about any unannotated ones.

There's a GNU __attribute__ which can be used for
annotation, but of course we'd have to #ifdef it away on
non-gcc compilers. Gcc will also recognize
specially-formatted comments, which matches our current
practice. Let's extend that practice to all of the
unannotated sites (which I did look over and verify that
they were behaving as intended).

Ideally in each case we'd actually give some reasons in the
comment about why we're falling through, or what we're
falling through to. And gcc does support that with
-Wimplicit-fallthrough=2, which relaxes the comment pattern
matching to anything that contains "fallthrough" (or a
variety of spelling variants). However, this isn't the
default for -Wimplicit-fallthrough, nor for -Wextra. In the
name of simplicity, it's probably better for us to support
the default level, which requires "fallthrough" to be the
only thing in the comment (modulo some window dressing like
"else" and some punctuation; see the gcc manual for the
complete set of patterns).

This patch suppresses all warnings due to
-Wimplicit-fallthrough. We might eventually want to add that
to the DEVELOPER Makefile knob, but we should probably wait
until gcc 7 is more widely adopted (since earlier versions
will complain about the unknown warning type).

bb246590a1 remote-{ext,fd}: print usage message on invalid arguments
We just say "Expected two arguments" when we get a different
number of arguments, but we can be slightly friendlier.
People shouldn't generally be running remote helpers
themselves, but curious users might say "git remote-ext -h".

81c634e94f pkt-line: rename packet_write() to packet_write_fmt()
packet_write() should be called packet_write_fmt() because it is a
printf-like function that takes a format string as first parameter.

packet_write_fmt() should be used for text strings only. Arbitrary
binary data should use a new packet_write() function that is introduced
in a subsequent patch.

850d2fec53 convert manual allocations to argv_array
There are many manual argv allocations that predate the
argv_array API. Switching to that API brings a few
advantages:

  1. We no longer have to manually compute the correct final
array size (so it's one less thing we can screw up).

  2. In many cases we had to make a separate pass to count,
then allocate, then fill in the array. Now we can do it
in one pass, making the code shorter and easier to
     follow.

  3. argv_array handles memory ownership for us, making it
more obvious when things should be free()d and and when
     not.

Most of these cases are pretty straightforward. In some, we
switch from "run_command_v" to "run_command" which lets us
directly use the argv_array embedded in "struct
child_process".

df1ed03a6f remote-ext: simplify git pkt-line generation
We format a pkt-line into a heap buffer, which requires
manual computation of the required size, and uses some bare
sprintf calls. We could use a strbuf instead, which would
take care of the computation for us. But it's even easier
still to use packet_write(). Besides handling the formatting
and writing for us, it fixes two things:

  1. Our manual max-size check used 0xFFFF, while technically
LARGE_PACKET_MAX is slightly smaller than this.

  2. Our packet will now be output as part of
     GIT_TRACE_PACKET debugging.

Unfortunately packet_write() does not let us build up the
buffer progressively, so we do have to repeat ourselves a
little depending on the "vhost" setting, but the end result
is still far more readable than the original.

Since there were no tests covering this feature at all,
we'll add a few into t5802.

d318027932 run-command: introduce CHILD_PROCESS_INIT
Most struct child_process variables are cleared using memset first after
declaration. Provide a macro, CHILD_PROCESS_INIT, that can be used to
initialize them statically instead. That's shorter, doesn't require a
function call and is slightly more readable (especially given that we
already have STRBUF_INIT, ARGV_ARRAY_INIT etc.).

60a2e3320f remote-ext: do not segfault for blank lines
Instead of stripping space characters past the beginning of the
line and overflowing a buffer, stop at the beginning of the line
(mimicking the corresponding fix in remote-fd).

The argument to isspace does not need to be cast explicitly because
git isspace takes care of that already.

7851b1e60f remote-fd/ext: finishing touches after code review
When compiling with pthread support, transport-helper.c needs to include
necessary header files. Also fix a few error messages in remote-ext and
remote-fd programs, and a potential buffer underrun in remote-fd.

In the documentation, clarify how %G and %V are used; the old description
looked as if they take repository/vhost parameters, which was wrong.

Also fix AsciiDoc markup for the page title of remote-fd/remote-ext manpages,
and tweak the way how section headers are shown.
