17f273ffba git-p4: support explicit sync of arbitrary existing git-p4 refs
With the --branch argument of the "sync" subcommand, git-p4 enables
you to import a perforce branch/path to an arbitrary git ref, using
a full ref path, or to refs/remotes/p4/* or refs/heads/p4/*,
depending on --import-local, using a short ref name.

However, when you later want to explicitly sync such a given ref to
pick up subsequent p4 changes, it only works if the ref was placed
in the p4 path *and* has only one path component (no "/").

This limitation results from a bad assumption in the
existing-branch sync logic, and also means you cannot individually
sync branches detected by --detect-branches, as these also get a
"/" in their names.

Fix "git p4 sync --branch", when called with an existing ref, so
that it works correctly regardless of whether the ref is in the p4
path or not, and (in the case of refs in the p4 path) regardless of
whether it has a "/" in its short name or not.

Also add tests to validate that these branch-specific syncs work
as expected.

0c51d6b4ae t6000-t9999: detect and signal failure within loop
Failures within `for` and `while` loops can go unnoticed if not detected
and signaled manually since the loop itself does not abort when a
contained command fails, nor will a failure necessarily be detected when
the loop finishes since the loop returns the exit code of the last
command it ran on the final iteration, which may not be the command
which failed. Therefore, detect and signal failures manually within
loops using the idiom `|| return 1` (or `|| exit 1` within subshells).

46a29020bb tests(git-p4): transition to the default branch name main
In the previous commits, we adjusted the test suite to use the branch
name `main` for initial branches.

The `git p4`-related tests are a bit harder to adjust because `git p4`
uses the ref `refs/heads/p4/master` to track the remote branches, and
for now, we do not want to change that (this might be the subject of a
future patch series). We only need to adjust for the actual initial
branch name to be changed to `main`.

This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

334afbc76f tests: mark tests relying on the current default for init.defaultBranch
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.

To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in

- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,

- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
  initialize the default branch,

- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,

- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
  uses `master`)

This trick was performed by this command:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
	t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh

After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

	$ git checkout HEAD -- \
		t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
		t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \
		t/t1305-config-include.sh t/t1309-early-config.sh \
		t/t1402-check-ref-format.sh t/t1450-fsck.sh \
		t/t2024-checkout-dwim.sh \

		t/t3040-subprojects-basic.sh t/t3301-notes.sh \
		t/t3308-notes-merge.sh t/t3423-rebase-reword.sh \
		t/t3436-rebase-more-options.sh \
		t/t4015-diff-whitespace.sh t/t4257-am-interactive.sh \
		t/t5323-pack-redundant.sh t/t5401-update-hooks.sh \
		t/t5511-refspec.sh t/t5526-fetch-submodules.sh \
		t/t5529-push-errors.sh t/t5530-upload-pack-error.sh \

		t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
		t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

99e37c2560 git p4 test: use 'test_atexit' to kill p4d and the watchdog process
Use 'test_atexit' to run cleanup commands to stop 'p4d' at the end of
the test script or upon interrupt or failure, as it is shorter,
simpler, and more robust than registering such cleanup commands in the
trap on EXIT in the test scripts.

Note that one of the test scripts, 't9801-git-p4-branch.sh', stops and
then re-starts 'p4d' twice in the middle of the script; take care that
the cleanup functions to stop 'p4d' are only registered once.

Note also that 'git p4' tests invoke different functions in the trap
on EXIT ('cleanup') and in the last test before 'test_done'
('kill_p4d'). Register both of these functions with 'test_atexit' for
now, and a a later patch in this series will then clean up the
redundancy.

9943e5b979 git-p4: fix multi-path changelist empty commits
When importing from multiple perforce paths - we may attempt to
import a changelist that contains files from two (or more) of these
depot paths. Currently, this results in multiple git commits - one
containing the changes, and the other(s) as empty commit(s). This
behavior was introduced in commit 1f90a64891 ("git-p4: reduce number
of server queries for fetches", 2015-12-19).

Reproduction Steps:

  1. Have a git repo cloned from a perforce repo using multiple
     depot paths (e.g. //depot/foo and //depot/bar).

  2. Submit a single change to the perforce repo that makes changes
     in both //depot/foo and //depot/bar.

  3. Run "git p4 sync" to sync the change from #2.

Change is synced as multiple commits, one for each depot path that
was affected.

Using a set, instead of a list inside p4ChangesForPaths() ensures
that each changelist is unique to the returned list, and therefore
only a single commit is generated for each changelist.

00ad6e3182 git-p4: work with a detached head
When submitting, git-p4 finds the current branch in
order to know if it is allowed to submit (configuration
"git-p4.allowSubmit").

On a detached head, detecting the branch would fail, and
git-p4 would report a cryptic error.

This change teaches git-p4 to recognise a detached head and
submit successfully.

41ca19b6a6 tests: fix negated test_i18ngrep calls
The helper function test_i18ngrep pretends that it found the expected
results when it is running under GETTEXT_POISON. For this reason, it must
not be used negated like so

   ! test_i18ngrep foo bar

because the test case would fail under GETTEXT_POISON. The function offers
a special syntax to test that a pattern is *not* found:

   test_i18ngrep ! foo bar

9b6513ac6f git p4 test: split up big t9800 test
The original t9800 test code has a mix of assorted topics, some
of which are big enough to deserve their own homes.
Interdependencies between the topics make it confusing when
trying to study one in isolation. And it takes so long to run
that debugging an individual test is difficult.

Split out three big chunks of tests into their own files:

    t9812-git-p4-wildcards.sh gets the 8 p4 wildcard tests

    t9813-git-p4-preserve-users.sh gets the 4 --preserve-user tests

t9814-git-p4-rename.sh gets the 2 copy and rename tests

Test 9800 execution time drops from 29 sec to 9 sec. The
sequential time to run all tests is a slower due to the three
extra p4d startup/shutdown sequences, but the overall parallel
execution time is about the same, at 52 sec.

9d7d446ae9 git p4: submit files with wildcards
There are four wildcard characters in p4. Files with these
characters can be added to p4 repos using the "-f" option. They
are stored in %xx notation, and when checked out, p4 converts
them back to normal.

When adding files with wildcards in git, the submit path must
be careful to use the encoded names in some places, and it
must use "-f" to add them. All other p4 commands that operate
on the client directory expect encoded filenames as arguments.

Support for wildcards in the clone/sync path was added in
084f630 (git-p4: decode p4 wildcard characters, 2011-02-19),
but that change did not handle the submit path.

There was a problem with wildcards in the sync path too. Commit
084f630 (git-p4: decode p4 wildcard characters, 2011-02-19)
handled files with p4 wildcards that were added or modified in
p4. Do this for deleted files, and also in branch detection
