`git difftool` only allow us to select file to view in turn.
If there is a commit with many files and we exit in the middle,
we will have to traverse list again to get the file diff which
we want to see. Therefore,teach the command an option
`--skip-to=<path>` to allow the user to say that diffs for earlier
paths are not interesting (because they were already seen in an
earlier session) and start this session with the named path.

In a bunch of test cases in 't7800-difftool.sh' we 'grep' for specific
filenames in 'git difftool's output, and those test cases are prone to
occasional failures because those filenames might be part of the name
of difftool's temporary directory as well, e.g.:

In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.
To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in
- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,
- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
initialize the default branch,
- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,
- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
uses `master`)
This trick was performed by this command:

aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

Commit 3aef54e8b8 ("diff: munmap() file contents before running external
diff") introduced calls to diff_free_filespec_data in
run_external_diff, which may pass NULL pointers.
Fix this and prevent any such bugs in the future by making
`diff_free_filespec_data(NULL)` a no-op.

In https://github.com/git-for-windows/git/issues/2677, a `git difftool
-d` problem was reported. The underlying cause was a bug in `git
diff-files --raw` that we just fixed: it reported intent-to-add files
with the empty _tree_ as the post-image OID, when we need to show
an all-zero (or, "null") OID instead, to indicate to the caller that
they have to look at the worktree file.
The symptom of that problem shown by `git difftool` was this:
error: unable to read sha1 file of <path> (<empty-tree-OID>)
error: could not write '<filename>'
Make sure that the reported `difftool` problem stays fixed.

A test in t7800 tries to make sure that when git-difftool runs an
external tool that fails, it stops looking at files. Our fake failing
tool prints the file name it was asked to diff before exiting non-zero,
and then we confirm the output contains only that file.
However, this subtly relies on our internal reuse_worktree_file().
Because we're diffing between branches, the command run by difftool
might see:
- the git-stored filename (e.g., "file"), if we decided that the
working tree contents were up-to-date with the object in the index
and HEAD, and we could reuse them
- a temporary filename (e.g. "/tmp/abc123_file") if we had to dump the
contents from the object database
If the latter case happens, then the test fails, because it's expecting
the string "file". I discovered this when debugging something unrelated
with reuse_worktree_file(). I _thought_ it should be able to be
triggered by a racy-git situation, but running:
./t7800-difftool.sh --stress --run=2,13
never seems to fail. However, by my reading of reuse_worktree_file(),
this would probably always fail under Cygwin, because it sets
NO_FAST_WORKING_DIRECTORY. At any rate, since reuse_worktree_file()
is meant to be an optimization that may or may not trigger, our test
should be robust either way.
Instead of checking the filename, let's just make sure we got a single
line of output (which would not be true if we continued after the first
failure).

anything. Make git-difftool fallback to `merge.guitool` when `diff.guitool` is
missing.

As far as this developer can tell, the conversion from a Perl script to
a built-in caused the regression in the difftool that it no longer runs
outside of a Git worktree (with `--no-index`, of course).
It is a bit embarrassing that it took over two years after retiring the
Perl version to discover this regression, but at least we now know, and
can do something, about it.

parse-options can unambiguously find an abbreviation only if it sees
all available options. This is usually the case when you use
parse_options(). But there are other callers like blame or shortlog
which uses parse_options_start() in combination with a custom option
parser, like rev-list. parse-options cannot see all options in this
case and will get abbrev detection wrong. Disable it.
t7800 needs update because --symlink no longer expands to --symlinks
and will be passed down to git-diff, which will not recognize it. I
still think this is the correct thing to do. But if --symlink has been
actually used in the wild, we would just add an option alias for it.

When passing a command-line to call an external diff command to the
difftool, we must be prepared for paths containing special characters,
e.g. backslashes in the temporary directory's path on Windows.
This patch is needed in preparation for the next commit, which will
make the MinGW version of Git *not* rewrite TMP to use forward slashes
instead of backslashes.

The GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease compile-time testing option added in my
bb946bba76 ("i18n: add GETTEXT_POISON to simulate unfriendly
translator", 2011-02-22) has been slowly bitrotting as strings have
been marked for translation, and new tests have been added without
running it.
I brought this up on the list ("[BUG] test suite broken with
GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease", [1]) asking whether this mode was useful at
all anymore. At least one person occasionally uses it, and Lars
Schneider offered to change one of the the Travis builds to run in
this mode, so fix up the failing ones.
My test setup runs most of the tests, with the notable exception of
skipping all the p4 tests, so it's possible that there's still some
lurking regressions I haven't fixed.

The left and right base directories were pointed to the buf field of
two strbufs, which were subject to change.
A contrived test case shows the problem where a file with a long enough
name to force the strbuf to grow is up-to-date (hence the code path is
used where the work tree's version of the file is reused), and then a
file that is not up-to-date needs to be written (hence the code path is
used where checkout_entry() uses the previously recorded base_dir that
is invalid by now).
Let's just copy the base_dir strings for use with checkout_entry(),
never touch them until the end, and release them then. This is an easily
verifiable fix (as opposed to the next-obvious alternative: to re-set
base_dir after every loop iteration).

Detect the null object ID for symlinks in dir-diff so that difftool can
detect when symlinks are modified in the worktree.
Previously, a null symlink object ID would crash difftool.
Handle null object IDs as unknown content that must be read from
the worktree.

This adds a builtin difftool that still falls back to the legacy Perl
version, which has been renamed to `legacy-difftool`.
The idea is that the new, experimental, builtin difftool immediately hands
off to the legacy difftool for now, unless the config variable
difftool.useBuiltin is set to true.
This feature flag will be used in the upcoming Git for Windows v2.11.0
release, to allow early testers to opt-in to use the builtin difftool and
flesh out any bugs.

9ec26e7977 (difftool: fix argument handling in subdirs, 2016-07-18)
corrected how path arguments are handled in a subdirectory, but
it introduced a regression in how entries outside of the
subdirectory are handled by dir-diff.
When preparing the right-side of the diff we only include the
changed paths in the temporary area.
The left side of the diff is constructed from a temporary
index that is built from the same set of changed files, but it
was being constructed from within the subdirectory. This is a
problem because the indexed paths are toplevel-relative, and
thus they were not getting added to the index.
Teach difftool to chdir to the toplevel of the repository before
preparing its temporary indexes. This ensures that all of the
toplevel-relative paths are valid.
Add test cases to more thoroughly exercise this scenario.

At the moment difftool's "trust exit code" logic always suppresses the
exit status of the diff utility we invoke. This is useful because we
don't want to exit just because diff returned "1" because the files
differ, but it's confusing if the shell returns an error because the
selected diff utility is not found.
POSIX specifies 127 as the exit status for "command not found", 126 for
"command found but is not executable" and values greater than 128 if the
command terminated because it received a signal [1] and at least bash
and dash follow this specification, while diff utilities generally use
"1" for the exit status we want to ignore.
Handle any value of 126 or greater as a special value indicating that
some form of fatal error occurred.

One among four invocations of readlink(1) in our test suite has
been rewritten so that the test can run on systems without the
command (others are in valgrind test framework and t9802).

When files are unmerged they can show up as both unmerged and
modified in the output of `git diff --raw`. This causes
difftool's dir-diff to create filesystem entries for the same
path twice, which fails when it encounters a duplicate path.
Ensure that each worktree path is only processed once.
Add a test to demonstrate the breakage.

In Git for Windows' SDK, the tests are run using a Bash that relies on
the POSIX emulation layer MSYS2 (itself a friendly fork of Cygwin). As
such, paths in tests can be POSIX paths. As soon as those paths are
passed to git.exe (which does *not* use the POSIX emulation layer),
those paths are converted into Windows paths, though. This happens
for command-line parameters, but not when reading, say, config variables.
To help with that, the `pwd` command is overridden to return the Windows
path of the current working directory when testing Git on Windows.
However, when talking to anything using the POSIX emulation layer, it is
really much better to use POSIX paths because Windows paths contain a
colon after the drive letter that will easily be mistaken for the common
separator in path lists.
So let's just use the $PWD variable when the POSIX path is needed.
This lets t7800-difftool.sh, t9400-git-cvsserver-server.sh,
t9402-git-cvsserver-refs.sh and t9401-git-cvsserver-crlf.sh pass in Git
for Windows' SDK.
Note: the cvsserver tests require not only the `cvs` package (install
it into Git for Windows' SDK via `pacman -S cvs`) but also the Perl
SQLite bindings (install them into Git for Windows' SDK via
`cpan DBD::SQLite`).

Because "test_when_finished" in our test framework queues the
clean-up tasks to be done in a shell variable, it should not be
used inside a subshell. Add a mechanism to allow 'bash' to catch
such uses, and fix the ones that were found.

The code to prepare the working tree side of temporary directory
for the "dir-diff" feature forgot that symbolic links need not be
copied (or symlinked) to the temporary area, as the code already
special cases and overwrites them. Besides, it was wrong to try
computing the object name of the target of symbolic link, which may
not even exist or may be a directory.

difftool: ignore symbolic links in use_wt_file
The caller is preparing a narrowed-down copy of the working tree and
this function is asked if the path should be included in that copy.
If we say yes, the path from the working tree will be either symlinked
or copied into the narrowed-down copy.
For any path that is a symbolic link, the caller later fixes up the
narrowed-down copy by unlinking the path and replacing it with a
regular file it writes out that mimics the way how "git diff"
compares symbolic links.
Let's answer "no, you do not want to copy/symlink the working tree
file" for all symbolic links from this function, as we know the
result will not be used because it will be overwritten anyway.
Incidentally, this also stops the function from feeding a symbolic
link in the working tree to hash-object, which is a wrong thing to
do to begin with. The link may be pointing at a directory, or worse
may be dangling (both would be noticed as an error). Even if the
link points at a regular file, hashing the contents of a file that
is pointed at by the link is not correct (Git hashes the contents of
the link itself, not the pointee).

An attempt to quit difftool by hitting Ctrl-D (EOF) at its prompt does
not quit it, but is treated as if 'yes' was answered to the prompt and
all following prompts, which is contrary to the user's intent. Fix the

When the external diff reports an error, we try to clean up
and die. However, we can make this process a bit simpler:
1. We do not need to bother freeing memory, since we are
about to exit. Nor do we need to clean up our
tempfiles, since the atexit() handler will do it for
us. So we can die as soon as we see the error.
3. We can just call die() rather than fprintf/exit. This
does technically change our exit code, but the exit
code of "1" is not meaningful here. In fact, it is
probably wrong, since "1" from diff usually means
"completed successfully, but there were differences".
And while we're there, we can mark the error message for
translation, and drop the full stop at the end to make it
more like our other messages.

The temporary directory prepared by "difftool --dir-diff" to
show the result of a change can be modified by the user via
the tree diff program, and we try hard not to lose changes
to them after tree diff program returns to us.
However, the set of files to be copied back is computed
differently between --symlinks and --no-symlinks modes. The
former checks all paths that start out as identical to the
working tree file, while the latter checks paths that
already had a local modification in the working tree,
allowing changes made in the tree diff program to paths that
did not have any local change to be lost.

Commit 02c5631 (difftool --dir-diff: symlink all files matching the
working tree, 2013-03-14) does not handle the case where a file that is
being compared does not exist in the working tree. Fix this by checking
