93e02b6e1e tests: don't assume a .git/info for .git/info/grafts
Change those tests that assumed that a .git/info directory would be
created for them when writing .git/info/grafts to explicitly create
the directory.

Do this using the new "TEST_CREATE_REPO_NO_TEMPLATE" facility, and use
"mkdir" instead of "mkdir -p" to assert that we don't have the
.git/info already. An exception to this is the "with grafts" test in
"t6001-rev-list-graft.sh". There we're modifying our ".git" state in a
for-loop, in lieu of refactoring that more extensively let's use
"mkdir -p" there.

1550bb6ed0 t6[0-3]*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"
Carefully excluding t6300, which sees independent development elsewhere
at the time of writing, we use `main` as the default branch name in
t6[0-3]*. This trick was performed via

	$ (cd t &&
	   sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
		-e 's/Master/Main/g' -- t6[0-3]*.sh &&
	   git checkout HEAD -- t6300\*)

This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

334afbc76f tests: mark tests relying on the current default for init.defaultBranch
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.

To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in

- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,

- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
  initialize the default branch,

- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,

- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
  uses `master`)

This trick was performed by this command:

After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

f9f99b3f7d Deprecate support for .git/info/grafts
The grafts feature was a convenient way to "stitch together" ancient
history to the fresh start of linux.git.

Its implementation is, however, not up to Git's standards, as there are
too many ways where it can lead to surprising and unwelcome behavior.

For example, when pushing from a repository with active grafts, it is
possible to miss commits that have been "grafted out", resulting in a
broken state on the other side.

Also, the grafts feature is limited to "rewriting" commits' list of
parents, it cannot replace anything else.

The much younger feature implemented as `git replace` set out to remedy
those limitations and dangerous bugs.

Seeing as `git replace` is pretty mature by now (since 4228e8bc98
(replace: add --graft option, 2014-07-19) it can perform the graft
file's duties), it is time to deprecate support for the graft file, and
to retire it eventually.

11da571a2f t/t6001-rev-list-graft.sh: use the $( ... ) construct for command substitution
The Git CodingGuidelines prefer the $(...) construct for command
substitution instead of using the backquotes `...`.

The backquoted form is the traditional method for command
substitution, and is supported by POSIX.  However, all but the
simplest uses become complicated quickly.  In particular, embedded
command substitutions and/or the use of double quotes require
careful escaping with the backslash character.

The patch was generated by:

for _f in $(find . -name "*.sh")
do
	perl -i -pe 'BEGIN{undef $/;} s/`(.+?)`/\$(\1)/smg'  "${_f}"
done

and then carefully proof-read.

a48fcd8369 tests: add missing &&
Breaks in a test assertion's && chain can potentially hide
failures from earlier commands in the chain.

Commands intended to fail should be marked with !, test_must_fail, or
test_might_fail.  The examples in this patch do not require that.

4fdf71be1c tests: use "test_cmp", not "diff", when verifying the result
In tests, call test_cmp rather than raw diff where possible (i.e. if
the output does not go to a pipe), to allow the use of, say, 'cmp'
when the default 'diff -u' is not compatible with a vendor diff.

When that is not possible, use $DIFF, as set in GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS.

16652170bf An illustration of rev-list --parents --pretty=raw
This script creates two separate histories, A and B, each of
which does:

      (A0, B0): create fileA and subdir/fileB
      (A1, B1): modify fileA
      (A2, B2): modify subdir/fileB

and then grafts them together to make B0 a child of A2.  So
the final history looks like (time flows from top to bottom):

		true parent	touches subdir?

	A0	none		yes (creates it)
        A1      A0		no
        A2	A1		yes
        B0	none		yes (different from what's in A2)
        B1	B0		no
        B2	B1		yes

"git rev-list --parents --pretty=raw B2" would give "fake"
parents on the "commit " header lines while "parent " header
lines show the parent as recorded in the commit object (i.e. B0
appears to have A2 as its parent on "commit " header but there
is no "parent A2" header line in it).

When you have path limiters, we simplify history to omit
commits that do not affect the specified paths.

So "git rev-list --parents --pretty=raw B2 subdir" would return
"B2 B0 A2 A0" (because B1 and A1 do not touch the path).  When
it does so, the "commit " header lines have "fake" parents
(i.e. B2 appears to have B0 as its parent on "commit " header),
but you can still get the true parents by looking at "parent "
header.
