Change the test for "git tag -l" to not have an associated TODO
comment saying that it should return non-zero if there's no tags.
This was added in commit ef5a6fb597 ("Add test-script for git-tag",
2007-06-28) when the tests for "tag" were initially added, but at this
point changing this would be inconsistent with how "git tag" is a
synonym for "git tag -l", and would needlessly break external code
that relies on this porcelain command.

Change the tag test suite to test for --contains on a tree & blob. It
only accepts commits and will spew out "<object> is a tree, not a
commit".
It's sufficient to test this just for the "tag" and "branch" commands,
because it covers all the machinery shared between "branch" and
"for-each-ref".

There are three issues with the test:
* The syntax of the here-doc was wrong, such that the entire test was
sucked into the here-doc, which is why the test succeeded.
* The variable $submodulesha1 was not expanded as it was inside a quoted
here text. We do not want to quote EOF marker for this.
* The redirection from the git command to the output file for comparison
was wrong as the -C operator from git doesn't apply to the redirect path.
Also we're interested in stderr of that command.

Currently when there are untracked changes in a file "one" and in a file
"two" in the repository and the user uses:
git stash push -k one
all changes in "two" are wiped out completely. That is clearly not the
intended result. Make sure that only the files given in the pathspec
are changed when git stash push -k <pathspec> is used.

For "git stash -p --no-keep-index", the pathspec argument is currently
not passed to "git reset". This means that changes that are staged but
that are excluded from the pathspec still get unstaged by git stash -p.
Make sure that doesn't happen by passing the pathspec argument to the
git reset in question, bringing the behaviour in line with "git stash --
<pathspec>".

git stash push uses other git commands internally. Currently it only
passes the -q flag to those if the -q flag is passed to git stash. when
using 'git stash push -p -q --no-keep-index', it doesn't even pass the
flag on to the internal reset at all.
It really is enough for the user to know that the stash is created,
without bothering them with the internal details of what's happening.
Always pass the -q flag to the internal git clean and git reset
commands, to avoid unnecessary and potentially confusing output.

git-describe tells you the version number you're at, or errors out, e.g.
when you run it outside of a repository, which may happen when downloading
a tar ball instead of using git to obtain the source code.
To keep this property of only erroring out, when not in a repository,
severe (submodule) errors must be downgraded to reporting them gently
instead of having git-describe error out completely.
To achieve that a flag '--broken' is introduced, which is in the same
vein as '--dirty' but uses an actual child process to check for dirtiness.
When that child dies unexpectedly, we'll append '-broken' instead of
'-dirty'.

The configuration file learned a new "includeIf.<condition>.path"
that includes the contents of the given path only when the
condition holds. This allows you to say "include this work-related
bit only in the repositories under my ~/work/ directory".

"git diff --quiet" relies on the size field in diff_filespec to be
correctly populated, but diff_populate_filespec() helper function

Change the behavior of specifying --merged & --no-merged to be an
error, instead of silently picking the option that was provided last.
Subsequent changes of mine add a --no-contains option in addition to
the existing --contains. Providing both of those isn't an error, and
has actual meaning.
Making its cousins have different behavior in this regard would be
confusing to the user, especially since we'd be silently disregarding
some of their command-line input.

The hash-object command uses prefix_filename() without
duplicating its return value. Since that function returns a
static buffer, the value is overwritten by subsequent calls.
This can cause incorrect results when we use --path along
with hashing a file by its relative path, both of which need
to call prefix_filename(). We overwrite the filename
computed for --path, effectively ignoring it.
We can fix this by calling xstrdup on the return value. Note
that we don't bother freeing the "vpath" instance, as it
remains valid until the program exit.

This test case redirects stdout and stderr to output files, but,
unlike the other cases of redirection in the t1400 tests, these files
are not examined downstream. Remove the redirection so that the
output is visible when running the tests verbosely.

A group of update-ref tests verifies that logs are created when either
the log file for the ref already exists or core.logAllRefUpdates is
"true". However, when the default for core.logAllRefUpdates was
changed in 0bee59186 (Enable reflogs by default in any repository with
a working directory., 2006-12-14), the setup for the tests was not
updated. As a result, the "logged by touch" tests would pass even if
the log file did not exist (i.e., if "--create-reflog" was removed
from the first "git update-ref" call).
Update the "logged by touch" tests to disable core.logAllRefUpdates
explicitly so that the behavior does not depend on the default value.
While we're here, update the "logged by config" tests to use
test_config() rather than setting core.logAllRefUpdates to "true"
outside of the tests.

"git difftool --dir-diff" used to die a controlled death giving a
"fatal" message when encountering a locally modified symbolic link,
but it started segfaulting since v2.12. This has been fixed.

'git {log,diff,...} -S<...> --pickaxe-regex' can segfault as a result
of out-of-bounds memory reads.
diffcore-pickaxe.c:contains() looks for all matches of the given regex
in a buffer in a loop, advancing the buffer pointer to the end of the
last match in each iteration. When we switched to REG_STARTEND in
b7d36ffca (regex: use regexec_buf(), 2016-09-21), we started passing
the size of that buffer to the regexp engine, too. Unfortunately,
this buffer size is never updated on subsequent iterations, and as the
buffer pointer advances on each iteration, this "bufptr+bufsize"
points past the end of the buffer. This results in segmentation
fault, if that memory can't be accessed. In case of 'git log' it can
also result in erroneously listed commits, if the memory past the end
of buffer is accessible and happens to contain data matching the
regex.
Reduce the buffer size on each iteration as the buffer pointer is
advanced, thus maintaining the correct end of buffer location.
Furthermore, make sure that the buffer pointer is not dereferenced in
the control flow statements when we already reached the end of the
buffer.
The new test is flaky, I've never seen it fail on my Linux box even
without the fix, but this is expected according to db5dfa3 (regex:
-G<pattern> feeds a non NUL-terminated string to regexec() and fails,
2016-09-21). However, it did fail on Travis CI with the first (and
incomplete) version of the fix, and based on that commit message I
would expect the new test without the fix to fail most of the time on
Windows.

When the 'test_pause' helper function invokes the shell mid-test, it
explicitly redirects the shell's stdout and stderr to file descriptors
3 and 4, which are the stdout and stderr of the tests (i.e. where they
would be connected anyway without those redirections). These file
descriptors are only attached to the terminal in verbose mode, hence
the restriction of 'test_pause' to work only with '-v'.
Redirect the shell's stdout and stderr to the test environment's
original stdout and stderr, allowing it to work properly even in
non-verbose mode, and the restriction can be lifted.

The 'debug' test helper is supposed to facilitate debugging by running
a command of the test suite under gdb. Unfortunately, its usefulness
is severely limited, because that gdb session is not interactive,
since the test's, and thus gdb's standard input is redirected from
/dev/null (for a good reason, see 781f76b15 (test-lib: redirect stdin
of tests, 2011-12-15)).
Redirect gdb's standard file descriptors from/to the test
environment's stdin, stdout and stderr in the 'debug' helper, thus
creating an interactive gdb session (even in non-verbose mode), which
is much, much more useful.

Teach clone --recurse-submodules to optionally take a pathspec argument
which describes which submodules should be recursively initialized and
cloned. If no pathspec is provided, --recurse-submodules will
recursively initialize and clone all submodules by using a default
pathspec of ".". In order to construct more complex pathspecs,
--recurse-submodules can be given multiple times.
This also configures the 'submodule.active' configuration option to be
the given pathspec, such that any future invocation of `git submodule
update` will keep up with the pathspec.
Additionally the switch '--recurse' is removed from the Documentation as
well as marked hidden in the options array, to streamline the options
for submodules. A simple '--recurse' doesn't convey what is being
recursed, e.g. it could mean directories or trees (c.f. ls-tree) In a
lot of other commands we already have '--recurse-submodules' to mean
recursing into submodules, so advertise this spelling here as the
genuine option.

Teach `submodule init` to initialize submodules which have been
configured to be active by setting 'submodule.active' with a pathspec.
Now if no path arguments are given and 'submodule.active' is configured,
`init` will initialize all submodules which have been configured to be
active. If no path arguments are given and 'submodule.active' is not
configured, then `init` will retain the old behavior of initializing all
submodules.
This allows users to record more complex patterns as it saves retyping
them whenever you invoke update.

Currently the submodule.<name>.url config option is used to determine if
a given submodule is of interest to the user. This ends up being
cumbersome in a world where we want to have different submodules checked
out in different worktrees or a more generalized mechanism to select
which submodules are of interest.
In a future with worktree support for submodules, there will be multiple
working trees, each of which may only need a subset of the submodules
checked out. The URL (which is where the submodule repository can be
obtained) should not differ between different working trees.
It may also be convenient for users to more easily specify groups of
submodules they are interested in as opposed to running "git submodule
init <path>" on each submodule they want checked out in their working
tree.
To this end two config options are introduced, submodule.active and
submodule.<name>.active. The submodule.active config holds a pathspec
that specifies which submodules should exist in the working tree. The
submodule.<name>.active config is a boolean flag used to indicate if
that particular submodule should exist in the working tree.
Its important to note that submodule.active functions differently than
the other configuration options since it takes a pathspec. This allows
users to adopt at least two new workflows:
1. Submodules can be grouped with a leading directory, such that a
pathspec e.g. 'lib/' would cover all library-ish modules to allow
those who are interested in library-ish modules to set
"submodule.active = lib/" just once to say any and all modules in
'lib/' are interesting.
2. Once the pathspec-attribute feature is invented, users can label
submodules with attributes to group them, so that a broad pathspec
with attribute requirements, e.g. ':(attr:lib)', can be used to say
any and all modules with the 'lib' attribute are interesting.
Since the .gitattributes file, just like the .gitmodules file, is
tracked by the superproject, when a submodule moves in the
superproject tree, the project can adjust which path gets the
attribute in .gitattributes, just like it can adjust which path has
the submodule in .gitmodules.
Neither of these two additional configuration options solve the problem
of wanting different submodules checked out in different worktrees
because multiple worktrees share .git/config. Only once per-worktree
configurations become a reality can this be solved, but this is a
necessary preparatory step for that future.
Given these multiple ways to check if a submodule is of interest, the
more fine-grained submodule.<name>.active option has the highest order
of precedence followed by the pathspec check against submodule.active.
To ensure backwards compatibility, if neither of these options are set,
git falls back to checking the submodule.<name>.url option to determine
if a submodule is interesting.

needs to say relative to which parent the reversion needs to
happen, as if "-m 0" weren't given. The correct diagnosis is that
"-m 0" does not refer to the first parent ("-m 1" does). This has
been fixed.

"git add -p <pathspec>" unnecessarily expanded the pathspec to a
list of individual files that matches the pathspec by running "git
ls-files <pathspec>", before feeding it to "git diff-index" to see
which paths have changes, because historically the pathspec
language supported by "diff-index" was weaker. These days they are
equivalent and there is no reason to internally expand it. This
helps both performance and avoids command line argument limit on
some platforms.

submodule. When creating the pathspec struct in the child, the ".." is
interpreted to mean "go up a directory" which causes an error stating that the
path ".." is outside of the repository.
While it is true that ".." is outside the scope of the submodule, it is
confusing to a user who originally invoked the command where ".." was indeed
still inside the scope of the superproject. Since the child process launched
for the submodule has some context that it is operating underneath a
superproject, this error could be avoided.
This patch fixes the bug by passing the 'prefix' to the child process. Now
each child process that works on a submodule has two points of reference to the
superproject: (1) the 'super_prefix' which is the path from the root of the
superproject down to root of the submodule and (2) the 'prefix' which is the
path from the root of the superproject down to the directory where the user
invoked the git command.
With these two pieces of information a child process can correctly interpret
the pathspecs provided by the user as well as being able to properly format its
output relative to the directory the user invoked the original command from.

The definition of which submodules are of interest by the user
is tied to the configuration submodule.<name>.url; when it is
set to a non-empty string, it is of interest. We'd want to be
able to later change this definition, but there are many places
that explicitly check this condition in the scripted Porcelain.
Introduce the "is-active" subcommand to "submodule--helper", so
that the exact definition of what submodule is of interest can
be centrally defined (and changed in later steps). In a few
patches that follow, this helper is used to replace the explicit
checks of the configuration variable in scripts.

We don't actually have a Git-object collision, so the best
we can do is to run one of the shattered PDFs through
test-sha1. This should trigger the collision check and die.
In a sense this isn't really checking anything that the
upstream sha1collisiondetection project doesn't cover
already. But it at least makes sure that our build correctly
uses the library.

A new known failure mode is introduced[1], which is actually not
a failure but a feature in read-tree. Unlike checkout for which
the recursive submodule tests were originally written, read-tree does
warn about ignored untracked files that would be overwritten.
For the sake of keeping the test library for submodules generic, just
mark the test as a failure.

This exposes a flag to recurse into submodules
in builtin/checkout making use of the code implemented
in prior patches.
A new failure mode is introduced in the submodule
update library, as the directory/submodule conflict
is not solved in prior patches.

Git v2.12 was shipped with an embarrassing breakage where various
operations that verify paths given from the user stopped dying when
seeing an issue, and instead later triggering segfault.

The code to parse "git log -L..." command line was buggy when there

Currently lib-submodule-update.sh provides 2 functions
test_submodule_switch and test_submodule_forced_switch that are used by a
variety of tests to ensure that submodules behave as expected. The current
expected behavior is that submodules are not touched at all (see
42639d2317 for the exact setup).
In the future we want to teach all these commands to recurse
into submodules. To do that, we'll add two testing functions to
submodule-update-lib.sh: test_submodule_switch_recursing and
test_submodule_forced_switch_recursing.
These two functions behave in analogy to the already existing functions
just with a different expectation on submodule behavior. The submodule
in the working tree is expected to be updated to the recorded submodule
version. The behavior is analogous to e.g. the behavior of files in a
nested directory in the working tree, where a change to the working tree
handles any arising directory/file conflicts just fine.

Adding the repository itself as a submodule does not make sense in the
real world. In our test suite we used to do that out of convenience in
some tests as the current repository has easiest access for setting up
'just a submodule'.
However this doesn't quite test the real world, so let's do not follow
this pattern any further and actually create an independent repository
that we can use as a submodule.
When using './.' as the remote the superproject and submodule share the
same objects, such that testing if a given sha1 is a valid commit works
in either repository. As running commands in an unpopulated submodule
fall back to the superproject, this happens in `reset_work_tree_to`
to determine if we need to populate the submodule. Fix this bug by
checking in the actual remote now.

Redraw the ASCII art describing the setup using more space, such that
it is easier to understand. The leaf commits are now ordered the same
way the actual code is ordered.
Add empty lines to the setup code separating each of the leaf commits,
each starting with a "checkout -b".

The cherry-pick and revert commands use OPT_INTEGER() to
parse --mainline. The stock parser is smart enough to reject
non-numeric nonsense, but it doesn't know that parent
counting starts at 1.
Worse, the value "0" is indistinguishable from the unset
case, so a user who assumes the counting is 0-based will get
a confusing message:
$ git cherry-pick -m 0 $merge
error: commit ... is a merge but no -m option was given.
Let's use a custom callback that enforces our range.

Detect the null object ID for symlinks in dir-diff so that difftool can
detect when symlinks are modified in the worktree.
Previously, a null symlink object ID would crash difftool.
Handle null object IDs as unknown content that must be read from
the worktree.

"git branch --list" takes the "--abbrev" and "--no-abbrev" options
to control the output of the object name in its "-v"(erbose)
output, but a recent update started ignoring them; this fixes it
before the breakage reaches to any released version.

Earlier, we punted and simply assumed that we are in the top-level
directory of the project, and that there is no .git file but a .git/
directory so that we can read directly from .git/config.
However, that is not necessarily true. We may be in a subdirectory. Or
.git may be a gitfile. Or the environment variable GIT_DIR may be set.
To remedy this situation, we just refactored the way
setup_git_directory() discovers the .git/ directory, to make it
reusable, and more importantly, to leave all global variables and the
current working directory alone.
Let's discover the .git/ directory correctly in read_early_config() by
using that new function.
This fixes 4 known breakages in t7006.

When we want to get the list of modified files, we first
expand any user-provided pathspecs with "ls-files", and then
feed the resulting list of paths as arguments to
"diff-index" and "diff-files". If your pathspec expands into
a large number of paths, you may run into one of two
problems:
1. The OS may complain about the size of the argument
list, and refuse to run. For example:
$ (ulimit -s 128 && git add -p drivers)
Can't exec "git": Argument list too long at .../git-add--interactive line 177.
Died at .../git-add--interactive line 177.
That's on the linux.git repository, which has about 20K
files in the "drivers" directory (none of them modified
in this case). The "ulimit -s" trick is necessary to
show the problem on Linux even for such a gigantic set
of paths. Other operating systems have much smaller
limits (e.g., a real-world case was seen with only 5K
files on OS X).
2. Even when it does work, it's really slow. The pathspec
code is not optimized for huge numbers of paths. Here's
the same case without the ulimit:
$ time git add -p drivers
No changes.
real 0m16.559s
user 0m53.140s
sys 0m0.220s
We can improve this by skipping "ls-files" completely, and
just feeding the original pathspecs to the diff commands.
This solution was discussed in 2010:

but at the time the diff code's pathspecs were more
primitive than those used by ls-files (e.g., they did not
support globs). Making the change would have caused a
user-visible regression, so we didn't.
Since then, the pathspec code has been unified, and the diff
commands natively understand pathspecs like '*.c'.
This patch implements that solution. That skips the
argument-list limits, and the result runs much faster:
$ time git add -p drivers
No changes.
real 0m0.149s
user 0m0.116s
sys 0m0.080s
There are two new tests. The first just exercises the
globbing behavior to confirm that we are not causing a
regression there. The second checks the actual argument
behavior using GIT_TRACE. We _could_ do it with the "ulimit
-s" trick, as above. But that would mean the test could only
run where "ulimit -s" works. And tests of that sort are
expensive, because we have to come up with enough files to
actually bust the limit (we can't just shrink the "128" down
infinitely, since it is also the in-program stack size).
Finally, two caveats and possibilities for future work:
a. This fixes one argument-list expansion, but there may
be others. In fact, it's very likely that if you run
"git add -i" and select a large number of modified
files that the script would try to feed them all to a
single git command.
In practice this is probably fine. The real issue here
is that the argument list was growing with the _total_
number of files, not the number of modified or selected
files.
b. If the repository contains filenames with literal wildcard
characters (e.g., "foo*"), the original code expanded
them via "ls-files" and then fed those wildcard names
to "diff-index", which would have treated them as
wildcards. This was a bug, which is now fixed (though
unless you really go through some contortions with
":(literal)", it's likely that your original pathspec
would match whatever the accidentally-expanded wildcard
would anyway).
So this takes us one step closer to working correctly
with files whose names contain wildcard characters, but
it's likely that others remain (e.g., if "git add -i"
feeds the selected paths to "git add").

In our own .gitattributes file we have attributes such as:
*.[ch] whitespace=indent,trail,space
When querying for attributes we want to be able to ask for the exact
value, i.e.
git ls-files :(attr:whitespace=indent,trail,space)
should work, but the commas are used in the attr magic to introduce
the next attr, such that this query currently fails with
fatal: Invalid pathspec magic 'trail' in ':(attr:whitespace=indent,trail,space)'
This change allows escaping characters by a backslash, such that the query
git ls-files :(attr:whitespace=indent\,trail\,space)
will match all path that have the value "indent,trail,space" for the
whitespace attribute. To accomplish this, we need to modify two places.
First `parse_long_magic` needs to not stop early upon seeing a comma or
closing paren that is escaped. As a second step we need to remove any
escaping from the attr value.

The pathspec mechanism is extended via the new
":(attr:eol=input)pattern/to/match" syntax to filter paths so that it
requires paths to not just match the given pattern but also have the
specified attrs attached for them to be chosen.

"git diff --quiet" relies on the size field in diff_filespec to be
correctly populated, but diff_populate_filespec() helper function
made an incorrect short-cut when asked only to populate the size
field for paths that need to go through convert_to_git() (e.g. CRLF
conversion).

Sometimes a set of repositories want to share configuration settings
among themselves that are distinct from other such sets of repositories.
A user may work on two projects, each of which have multiple
repositories, and use one user.email for one project while using another
for the other.
Setting $GIT_DIR/.config works, but if the penalty of forgetting to
update $GIT_DIR/.config is high (especially when you end up cloning
often), it may not be the best way to go. Having the settings in
~/.gitconfig, which would work for just one set of repositories, would
not well in such a situation. Having separate ${HOME}s may add more
problems than it solves.
Extend the include.path mechanism that lets a config file include
another config file, so that the inclusion can be done only when some
conditions hold. Then ~/.gitconfig can say "include config-project-A
only when working on project-A" for each project A the user works on.
In this patch, the only supported grouping is based on $GIT_DIR (in
absolute path), so you would need to group repositories by directory, or
something like that to take advantage of it.
We already have include.path for unconditional includes. This patch goes
with includeIf.<condition>.path to make it clearer that a condition is
required. The new config has the same backward compatibility approach as
include.path: older git versions that don't understand includeIf will
simply ignore them.

This test just checks that old clients can clone and fetch
from a newer git-daemon. The opposite should also be true,
but it's hard to test ancient versions of git-daemon because
they lack basic options like "--listen".
Note that we have to make a slight tweak to the
lib-git-daemon helper from the regular tests, so that it
starts the daemon with our correct git.a version.

The current test suite is good at letting you test a
particular version of Git. But it's not very good at letting
you test _two_ versions and seeing how they interact (e.g.,
one cloning from the other).
This commit adds a test harness that will build two
arbitrary versions of git and make it easy to call them from
inside your tests. See the README and the example script for
details.

stashed away only partially.

When a redirected http transport gets an error during the
redirected request, we ignored the error we got from the server,
and ended up giving a not-so-useful error message.

unlike in the e-mail header. "git send-email" has been updated to

In some situations it is useful to know if the given repository
is a submodule of another repository.
Add the flag --show-superproject-working-tree to git-rev-parse
to make it easy to find out if there is a superproject. When no
superproject exists, the output will be empty.

In 4ac9006f83 (real_path: have callers use real_pathdup and
strbuf_realpath, 2016-12-12), we changed the xstrdup(real_path())
pattern to use real_pathdup() directly.
The problem with this change is that real_path() calls
strbuf_realpath() with die_on_error = 1 while real_pathdup() calls
it with die_on_error = 0. Meaning that in cases where real_path()
causes Git to die() with an error message, real_pathdup() is silent
and returns NULL instead.
The callers, however, are ill-prepared for that change, as they expect
the return value to be non-NULL (and otherwise the function died
with an appropriate error message).
Fix this by extending real_pathdup()'s signature to accept the
die_on_error flag and simply pass it through to strbuf_realpath(),
and then adjust all callers after a careful audit whether they would
handle NULLs well.

This way a share index file will not be garbage collected if
we still read from an index it is based from.
As we need to read the current index before creating a new
one, the tests have to be adjusted, so that we don't expect
an old shared index file to be deleted right away when we
create a new one.

The idea of the test case "git -p - core.pager is not used from
subdirectory" was to verify that the setup_git_directory() function had
not been called just to obtain the core.pager setting.
However, we are about to fix the early config machinery so that it
*does* work, without messing up the global state.
Once that is done, the core.pager setting *will* be used, even when
running from a subdirectory, and that is a Good Thing.
The intention of that test case, however, was to verify that the
setup_git_directory() function has not run, because it changes global
state such as the current working directory.
To keep that spirit, but fix the incorrect assumption, this patch
replaces that test case by a new one that verifies that the pager is
run in the subdirectory, i.e. that the current working directory has
not been changed at the time the pager is configured and launched, even
if the `rev-parse` command requires a .git/ directory and *will* change
the working directory.

Previously, the git_commit_non_empty_tree function would always pass any
commit with no parents to git-commit-tree, regardless of whether the
tree was nonempty. The new commit would then be recorded in the
filter-branch revision map, and subsequent commits which leave the tree
untouched would be correctly filtered.
With this change, parentless commits with an empty tree are correctly
pruned, and an empty file is recorded in the revision map, signifying
that it was rewritten to "no commits." This works naturally with the
parent mapping for subsequent commits.

New test to expose a bug in filter-branch whereby the root commit is
never pruned, even though its tree is empty and --prune-empty is given.
The setup isn't exactly pretty, but I couldn't think of a simpler way to
create a parallel commit graph sans the first commit.

The existing implementation of range_set_union does not correctly
reallocate memory, leading to a heap overflow when it attempts to union
more than 24 separate line ranges.
For struct range_set *out to grow correctly it must have out->nr set to
the current size of the buffer when it is passed to range_set_grow.
However, the existing implementation of range_set_union only updates
out->nr at the end of the function, meaning that it is always zero
before this. This results in range_set_grow never growing the buffer, as
well as some of the union logic itself being incorrect as !out->nr is
always true.
The reason why 24 is the limit is that the first allocation of size 1
ends up allocating a buffer of size 24 (due to the call to alloc_nr in
ALLOC_GROW). This goes some way to explain why this hasn't been
caught before.
Fix the problem by correctly updating out->nr after reallocating the
range_set. As this results in out->nr containing the same value as the
variable o, replace o with out->nr as well.
Finally, add a new test to help prevent the problem reoccurring in the
future. Thanks to Vegard Nossum for writing the test.

It's tempting to say:
./run v1.0.0 HEAD
to see how we've sped up Git over the years. Unfortunately,
this doesn't quite work because versions of Git prior to
v1.7.0 lack bin-wrappers, so our "run" script doesn't
correctly put them in the PATH.
Worse, it means we silently find whatever other "git" is in
the PATH, and produce test results that have no bearing on
what we asked for.
Let's fallback to the main git directory when bin-wrappers
isn't present. Many modern perf scripts won't run with such
an antique version of Git, of course, but at least those
failures are detected and reported (and you're free to write
a limited perf script that works across many versions).
