5cf88fd8b0 git-compat-util.h: use "UNUSED", not "UNUSED(var)"
As reported in [1] the "UNUSED(var)" macro introduced in
2174b8c75de (Merge branch 'jk/unused-annotation' into next,
2022-08-24) breaks coccinelle's parsing of our sources in files where
it occurs.

Let's instead partially go with the approach suggested in [2] of
making this not take an argument. As noted in [1] "coccinelle" will
ignore such tokens in argument lists that it doesn't know about, and
it's less of a surprise to syntax highlighters.

This undoes the "help us notice when a parameter marked as unused is
actually use" part of 9b24034754 (git-compat-util: add UNUSED macro,
2022-08-19), a subsequent commit will further tweak the macro to
implement a replacement for that functionality.

63e14ee2d6 refs: mark unused each_ref_fn parameters
Functions used with for_each_ref(), etc, need to conform to the

45a187cc34 lookup_unknown_object(): take a repository argument
All of the other lookup_foo() functions take a repository argument, but
lookup_unknown_object() was never converted, and it uses the_repository
internally. Let's fix that.

We could leave a wrapper that uses the_repository, but there aren't that
many calls, so we'll just convert them all. I looked briefly at each
site to see if we had a repository struct (besides the_repository) we
could pass, but none of them do (so this conversion to pass
the_repository is a pure noop in each case, though it does take us one
step closer to eventually getting rid of the_repository).

7655b4119d remote-curl: show progress for fetches over dumb HTTP
Fetching over dumb HTTP transport doesn't show any progress, even with
the option --progress. If the connection is slow or there is a lot of
data to get then this can take a long time while the user is left to
wonder if git got stuck.

We don't know the number of objects to fetch at the outset, but we can
count the ones we got. Show an open-ended progress indicator based on
that number if the user asked for it.

667b76ec58 walker_fetch(): avoid raw array length computation
We compute the length of an array of object_id's with a raw
multiplication. In theory this could trigger an integer overflow which
would cause an under-allocation (and eventually an out of bounds write).

I doubt this can be triggered in practice, since you'd need to feed it
an enormous number of target objects, which would typically come from
the ref advertisement and be using proportional memory. And even on
64-bit systems, where "int" is much smaller than "size_t", that should
hold: even though "targets" is an int, the multiplication will be done
as a size_t because of the use of sizeof().

But we can easily fix it by using ALLOC_ARRAY(), which uses st_mult()
under the hood.

0ebbcf70e6 object: convert lookup_unknown_object() to use object_id
There are no callers left of lookup_unknown_object() that aren't just
passing us the "hash" member of a "struct object_id". Let's take the
whole struct, which gets us closer to removing all raw sha1 variables.
It also matches the existing conversions of lookup_blob(), etc.

The conversions of callers were done by hand, but they're all mechanical
one-liners.

ea82b2a085 tree-walk: store object_id in a separate member
When parsing a tree, we read the object ID directly out of the tree
buffer. This is normally fine, but such an object ID cannot be used with
oidcpy, which copies GIT_MAX_RAWSZ bytes, because if we are using SHA-1,
there may not be that many bytes to copy.

Instead, store the object ID in a separate struct member. Since we can
no longer efficiently compute the path length, store that information as
well in struct name_entry. Ensure we only copy the object ID into the
new buffer if the path length is nonzero, as some callers will pass us
an empty path with no object ID following it, and we will not want to
read past the end of the buffer.

cbd53a2193 object-store: move object access functions to object-store.h
This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less
overwhelming to read.

In particular, this moves:
- read_object_file
- oid_object_info
- write_object_file

As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h.
In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to
compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever
identifiers from the header are used. That can happen later
when we have better tooling for it.

After the previous commit, both users of `struct walker` set `get_tree`,

Let's hope that any out-of-tree users will not mind this change. They
should notice that the compilation fails as they try to set these

891435d55d treewide: rename tree to maybe_tree
Using the commit-graph file to walk commit history removes the large
cost of parsing commits during the walk. This exposes a performance
issue: lookup_tree() takes a large portion of the computation time,
even when Git never uses those trees.

In anticipation of lazy-loading these trees, rename the 'tree' member
of struct commit to 'maybe_tree'. This serves two purposes: it hints
at the future role of possibly being NULL even if the commit has a
valid tree, and it allows for unambiguous transformation from simple
member access (i.e. commit->maybe_tree) to method access.

bc83266abe Convert lookup_commit* to struct object_id
Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,
lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take
struct object_id arguments.

Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a
struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *,
leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.

parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

8f309aeb82 strbuf: introduce strbuf_getline_{lf,nul}()
The strbuf_getline() interface allows a byte other than LF or NUL as
the line terminator, but this is only because I wrote these
codepaths anticipating that there might be a value other than NUL
and LF that could be useful when I introduced line_termination long
time ago. No useful caller that uses other value has emerged.

By now, it is clear that the interface is overly broad without a
good reason. Many codepaths have hardcoded preference to read
either LF terminated or NUL terminated records from their input, and
then call strbuf_getline() with LF or NUL as the third parameter.

This step introduces two thin wrappers around strbuf_getline(),
namely, strbuf_getline_lf() and strbuf_getline_nul(), and
mechanically rewrites these call sites to call either one of
them. The changes contained in this patch are:

 * introduction of these two functions in strbuf.[ch]

 * mechanical conversion of all callers to strbuf_getline() with
either '\n' or '\0' as the third parameter to instead call the
   respective thin wrapper.

After this step, output from "git grep 'strbuf_getline('" would
become a lot smaller. An interim goal of this series is to make
this an empty set, so that we can have strbuf_getline_crlf() take
over the shorter name strbuf_getline().

2b87d3a896 drop strcpy in favor of raw sha1_to_hex
In some cases where we strcpy() the result of sha1_to_hex(),
there's no need; the result goes directly into a printf
statement, and we can simply pass the return value from
sha1_to_hex() directly.

When this code was originally written, sha1_to_hex used a
single buffer, and it was not safe to use it twice within a
single expression. That changed as of dcb3450 (sha1_to_hex()
usage cleanup, 2006-05-03), but this code was never updated.

2b2a5be394 each_ref_fn: change to take an object_id parameter
Change typedef each_ref_fn to take a "const struct object_id *oid"
parameter instead of "const unsigned char *sha1".

To aid this transition, implement an adapter that can be used to wrap
old-style functions matching the old typedef, which is now called
"each_ref_sha1_fn"), and make such functions callable via the new
interface. This requires the old function and its cb_data to be
wrapped in a "struct each_ref_fn_sha1_adapter", and that object to be
used as the cb_data for an adapter function, each_ref_fn_adapter().

This is an enormous diff, but most of it consists of simple,
mechanical changes to the sites that call any of the "for_each_ref"
family of functions. Subsequent to this change, the call sites can be
rewritten one by one to use the new interface.

1d147bdff0 ref_transaction_update(): remove "have_old" parameter
Instead, verify the reference's old value if and only if old_sha1 is
non-NULL.

ref_transaction_delete() will get the same treatment in a moment.

8c53f0719b use xstrdup_or_null to replace ternary conditionals
This replaces "x ? xstrdup(x) : NULL" with xstrdup_or_null(x).
The change is fairly mechanical, with the exception of
resolve_refdup, which can eliminate a temporary variable.

There are still a few hits grepping for "?.*xstrdup", but
these are of slightly different forms and cannot be
converted (e.g., "x ? xstrdup(x->foo) : NULL").

db7516ab9f refs.c: pass the ref log message to _create/delete/update instead of _commit
Change the ref transaction API so that we pass the reflog message to the
create/delete/update functions instead of to ref_transaction_commit.
This allows different reflog messages for each ref update in a multi-ref
transaction.

b6b10bb44c walker.c: use ref transaction for ref updates
Switch to using ref transactions in walker_fetch(). As part of the refactoring
to use ref transactions we also fix a potential memory leak where in the
original code if write_ref_sha1() would fail we would end up returning from
the function without free()ing the msg string.

Note that this function is only called when fetching from a remote HTTP
repository onto the local (most of the time single-user) repository which
likely means that the type of collisions that the previous locking would
protect against and cause the fetch to fail for are even more rare.

Similar to 16445242 (fetch-pack: avoid quadratic list insertion in

inserting. The result is the same, but it's more efficient that way.
The difference will only be measurable in repositories with a large
number of refs.

f33206992d walker_fetch: fix minor memory leak
We sometimes allocate "msg" on the heap, but will fail to
free it if we hit the failure code path. We can instead keep
a separate variable that is safe to be freed no matter how
we get to the failure code path.

While we're here, we can also do two readability
improvements:

  1. Use xstrfmt instead of a manual malloc/sprintf

  2. Due to the "maybe we allocate msg, maybe we don't"
strategy, the logic for deciding which message to show
was split into two parts. Since the deallocation is now
pushed onto a separate variable, this is no longer a
concern, and we can keep all of the logic in the same
     place.

6e454b9a31 clear parsed flag when we free tree buffers
Many code paths will free a tree object's buffer and set it
to NULL after finishing with it in order to keep memory
usage down during a traversal. However, out of 8 sites that
do this, only one actually unsets the "parsed" flag back.
Those sites that don't are setting a trap for later users of
the tree object; even after calling parse_tree, the buffer
will remain NULL, causing potential segfaults.

It is not known whether this is triggerable in the current
code. Most commands do not do an in-memory traversal
followed by actually using the objects again. However, it
does not hurt to be safe for future callers.

In most cases, we can abstract this out to a
"free_tree_buffer" helper. However, there are two
exceptions:

  1. The fsck code relies on the parsed flag to know that we
were able to parse the object at one point. We can
switch this to using a flag in the "flags" field.

  2. The index-pack code sets the buffer to NULL but does
not free it (it is freed by a caller). We should still
unset the parsed flag here, but we cannot use our
helper, as we do not want to free the buffer.

8d9c50105f Change check_ref_format() to take a flags argument
Change check_ref_format() to take a flags argument that indicates what
is acceptable in the reference name (analogous to "git
check-ref-format"'s "--allow-onelevel" and "--refspec-pattern"). This
is more convenient for callers and also fixes a failure in the test
suite (and likely elsewhere in the code) by enabling "onelevel" and
"refspec-pattern" to be allowed independently of each other.

Also rename check_ref_format() to check_refname_format() to make it
obvious that it deals with refnames rather than references themselves.
