ead74601c6 tests: don't assume a .git/info for .git/info/sparse-checkout
Change those tests that assumed that a .git/info directory would be
created for them when writing .git/info/sparse-checkout to explicitly
create the directory by setting "TEST_CREATE_REPO_NO_TEMPLATE=1"
before sourcing test-lib.sh, and using the "--template=" argument to
"git clone".

ecc7c8841d repo_read_index: add config to expect files outside sparse patterns
Typically with sparse checkouts, we expect files outside the sparsity
patterns to be marked as SKIP_WORKTREE and be missing from the working
tree. Sometimes this expectation would be violated however; including
in cases such as:
  * users grabbing files from elsewhere and writing them to the worktree
(perhaps by editing a cached copy in an editor, copying/renaming, or
     even untarring)
  * various git commands having incomplete or no support for the
    SKIP_WORKTREE bit[1,2]
  * users attempting to "abort" a sparse-checkout operation with a
    not-so-early Ctrl+C (updating $GIT_DIR/info/sparse-checkout and the
    working tree is not atomic)[3].
When the SKIP_WORKTREE bit in the index did not reflect the presence of
the file in the working tree, it traditionally caused confusion and was
difficult to detect and recover from. So, in a sparse checkout, since
af6a51875a (repo_read_index: clear SKIP_WORKTREE bit from files present
in worktree, 2022-01-14), Git automatically clears the SKIP_WORKTREE
bit at index read time for entries corresponding to files that are
present in the working tree.

There is another workflow, however, where it is expected that paths
outside the sparsity patterns appear to exist in the working tree and
that they do not lose the SKIP_WORKTREE bit, at least until they get
modified. A Git-aware virtual file system[4] takes advantage of its
position as a file system driver to expose all files in the working
tree, fetch them on demand using partial clone on access, and tell Git
to pay attention to them on demand by updating the sparse checkout
pattern on writes. This means that commands like "git status" only have
to examine files that have potentially been modified, whereas commands
like "ls" are able to show the entire codebase without requiring manual
updates to the sparse checkout pattern.

Thus since af6a51875a, Git with such Git-aware virtual file systems
unsets the SKIP_WORKTREE bit for all files and commands like "git
status" have to fetch and examine them all.

Introduce a configuration setting sparse.expectFilesOutsideOfPatterns to
allow limiting the tracked set of files to a small set once again. A
Git-aware virtual file system or other application that wants to
maintain files outside of the sparse checkout can set this in a
repository to instruct Git not to check for the presence of
SKIP_WORKTREE files. The setting defaults to false, so most users of
sparse checkout will still get the benefit of an automatically updating
index to recover from the variety of difficult issues detailed in
af6a51875a for paths with SKIP_WORKTREE set despite the path being
present.

06d531486e t[01]*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"
Carefully excluding t1309, which sees independent development elsewhere
at the time of writing, we transition above-mentioned tests to the
default branch name `main`. This trick was performed via

	$ (cd t &&
	   sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
		-e 's/Master/Main/g' -e 's/naster/nain/g' -- t[01]*.sh &&
	   git checkout HEAD -- t1309\*)

Note that t5533 contains a variation of the name `master` (`naster`)
that we rename here, too.

This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

334afbc76f tests: mark tests relying on the current default for init.defaultBranch
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.

To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in

- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,

- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
  initialize the default branch,

- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,

- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
  uses `master`)

This trick was performed by this command:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
	t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh

After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

	$ git checkout HEAD -- \
		t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
		t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \
		t/t1305-config-include.sh t/t1309-early-config.sh \
		t/t1402-check-ref-format.sh t/t1450-fsck.sh \
		t/t2024-checkout-dwim.sh \
		t/t2106-update-index-assume-unchanged.sh \
		t/t3040-subprojects-basic.sh t/t3301-notes.sh \
		t/t3308-notes-merge.sh t/t3423-rebase-reword.sh \
		t/t3436-rebase-more-options.sh \

		t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
		t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

01bbbbd9da fetch: allow adding a filter after initial clone
Retroactively adding a filter can be useful for existing shallow clones as
they allow users to see earlier change histories without downloading all
git objects in a regular --unshallow fetch.

Without this patch, users can make a clone partial by editing the
repository configuration to convert the remote into a promisor, like:

  git config core.repositoryFormatVersion 1
  git config extensions.partialClone origin
  git fetch --unshallow --filter=blob:none origin

Since the hard part of making this work is already in place and such
edits can be error-prone, teach Git to perform the required configuration
change automatically instead.

Note that this change does not modify the existing git behavior which
recognizes setting extensions.partialClone without changing
repositoryFormatVersion.

65f099b398 switch: no worktree status unless real branch switch happens
When we switch from one branch to another, it makes sense to show a
summary of local changes since there could be conflicts, or some files
left modified.... When switch is used solely for creating a new
branch (and "switch" to the same commit) or detaching, we don't really
need to show anything.

"git checkout" does it anyway for historical reasons. But we can start
with a clean slate with switch and don't have to.

This essentially reverts fa655d8411 (checkout: optimize "git checkout
-b <new_branch>" - 2018-08-16) and make it default for switch,
but also for -B and --detach. Users of big repos are encouraged to
move to switch.

2f215ff10b cache-tree: skip some blob checks in partial clone
In a partial clone, whenever a sparse checkout occurs, the existence of
all blobs in the index is verified, whether they are included or
excluded by the .git/info/sparse-checkout specification. This
significantly degrades performance because a lazy fetch occurs whenever
the existence of a missing blob is checked.

This is because cache_tree_update() checks the existence of all objects
in the index, whether or not CE_SKIP_WORKTREE is set on them. Teach
cache_tree_update() to skip checking CE_SKIP_WORKTREE objects when the
repository is a partial clone. This improves performance for sparse
checkout and also other operations that use cache_tree_update().

Instead of completely removing the check, an argument could be made that
the check should instead be replaced by a check that the blob is
promised, but for performance reasons, I decided not to do this.
If the user needs to verify the repository, it can be done using fsck
(which will notify if a tree points to a missing and non-promised blob,
whether the blob is included or excluded by the sparse-checkout
specification).

fa655d8411 checkout: optimize "git checkout -b <new_branch>"
Skip merging the commit, updating the index and working directory if and
only if we are creating a new branch via "git checkout -b <new_branch>."
Any other checkout options will still go through the former code path.

If sparse_checkout is on, require the user to manually opt in to this
optimzed behavior by setting the config setting checkout.optimizeNewBranch
to true as we will no longer update the skip-worktree bit in the index, nor
add/remove files in the working directory to reflect the current sparse
checkout settings.

For comparison, running "git checkout -b <new_branch>" on a large repo takes:

14.6 seconds - without this patch
0.3 seconds - with this patch

7d782416cb unpack-trees: don't update files with CE_WT_REMOVE set
Don't update files in the worktree from cache entries which are
flagged with CE_WT_REMOVE.

When a user does a sparse checkout, git removes files that are
marked with CE_WT_REMOVE (because they are out-of-scope for the
sparse checkout). If those files are also marked CE_UPDATE (for
instance, because they differ in the branch that is being checked
out and the outgoing branch), git would previously recreate them.
This patch prevents them from being recreated.

These erroneously-created files would also interfere with merges,
causing pre-merge revisions of out-of-scope files to appear in the
worktree.

apply_sparse_checkout() is the function where all "action"
manipulation (add, delete, update files..) for sparse checkout
occurs; it should not ask to delete and update both at the same
time.
