6159e7add4 rebase --abort: improve reflog message
When aborting a rebase the reflog message looks like

	rebase (abort): updating HEAD

which is not very informative. Improve the message by mentioning the
branch that we are returning to as we do at the end of a successful
rebase so it looks like.

	rebase (abort): returning to refs/heads/topic

If GIT_REFLOG_ACTION is set in the environment we no longer omit
"(abort)" from the reflog message. We don't omit "(start)" and
"(finish)" when starting and finishing a rebase in that case so we
shouldn't omit "(abort)".

be0d29d301 rebase --apply: make reflog messages match rebase --merge
The apply backend creates slightly different reflog messages to the
merge backend when starting or finishing a rebase and when picking
commits. These differences make it harder than it needs to be to parse
the reflog (I have a script that reads the finishing messages from
rebase and it is a pain to have to accommodate two different message
formats). While it is possible to determine the backend used for a
rebase from the reflog messages, the differences are not designed for
that purpose. c2417d3af7 (rebase: drop '-i' from the reflog for
interactive-based rebases, 2020-02-15) removed the clear distinction
between the reflog messages of the two backends without complaint.

As the merge backend is the default it is likely to be the format most
common in existing reflogs. For that reason the apply backend is changed
to format its reflog messages to match the merge backend as closely as
possible. Note that there is still a difference as when committing a
conflict resolution the apply backend will use "(pick)" rather than
"(continue)" because it is not currently possible to change the message
for a single commit.

In addition to c2417d3af7 we also changed the reflog messages in
68aa495b59 (rebase: implement --merge via the interactive machinery,
2018-12-11) and 2ac0d6273f (rebase: change the default backend from "am"
to "merge", 2020-02-15). This commit makes the same change to "git
rebase --apply" that 2ac0d6273f made to "git rebase" without any backend
specific options. As the messages are changed to use an existing format
any scripts that can parse the reflog messages of the default rebase
backend should be unaffected by this change.

There are existing tests for the messages from both backends which are
adjusted to ensure that they do not get out of sync in the future.

da1d63363f rebase --merge: fix reflog when continuing
The reflog message for a conflict resolution committed by "rebase
--continue" looks like

	rebase (continue): commit subject line

Unfortunately the reflog message each subsequent pick look like

rebase (continue) (pick): commit subject line

Fix this by setting the reflog message for "rebase --continue" in
sequencer_continue() so it does not affect subsequent commits. This
introduces a memory leak similar to the one leaking GIT_REFLOG_ACTION
in pick_commits(). Both of these will be fixed in a future series that
stops the sequencer calling setenv().

If we fail to commit the staged changes then we error out so
GIT_REFLOG_ACTION does not need to be reset in that case.

4e5e1b4b61 t3406: rework rebase reflog tests
Refactor the tests in preparation for adding more tests in the next
few commits. The reworked tests use the same function for testing both
the "merge" and "apply" backends. The test coverage for the "apply"
backend now includes setting GIT_REFLOG_ACTION.

Note that rebasing the "conflicts" branch does not create any
conflicts yet. A commit to do that will be added in the next commit
and the diff ends up smaller if we have don't rename the branch when
it is added.

7700ab087b rebase --apply: fix reflog
move_to_original_branch() passes the message intended for the branch
reflog as `orig_head_msg`. Fix this by adding a `branch_msg` member to
struct reset_head_opts and add a regression test. Note that these
reflog messages do not respect GIT_REFLOG_ACTION. They are not alone
in that and will be fixed in a future series.

The "merge" backend already has tests that check both the branch and
HEAD reflogs.

d162b25f95 tests: remove support for GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON
This removes the ability to inject "poison" gettext() messages via the
GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON special test setup.

I initially added this as a compile-time option in bb946bba76 (i18n:
add GETTEXT_POISON to simulate unfriendly translator, 2011-02-22), and
most recently modified to be toggleable at runtime in
6cdccfce1e (i18n: make GETTEXT_POISON a runtime option, 2018-11-08)..

The reason for its removal is that the trade-off of maintaining it
v.s. what it's getting us has long since flipped. When gettext was
integrated in 5e9637c629 (i18n: add infrastructure for translating
Git with gettext, 2011-11-18) there was understandable concern on the
Git ML that in marking messages for translation en-masse we'd
inadvertently mark plumbing messages. The GETTEXT_POISON facility was
a way to smoke those out via our test suite.

Nowadays however we're done (or almost entirely done) with any marking
of messages for translation. New messages are usually marked by their
authors, who'll know whether it makes sense to translate them or
not. If not any errors in marking the messages are much more likely to
be spotted in review than in the the initial deluge of i18n patches in
the 2011-2012 era.

So let's just remove this. This leaves the test suite in a state where
we still have a lot of test_i18n, C_LOCALE_OUTPUT
etc. uses. Subsequent commits will remove those too.

The change to t/lib-rebase.sh is a selective revert of the relevant
part of f2d17068fd (i18n: rebase-interactive: mark comments of squash
for translation, 2016-06-17), and the comment in
t/t3406-rebase-message.sh is from c7108bf9ed (i18n: rebase: mark
messages for translation, 2012-07-25).

d1c02d93b3 t34*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"
Carefully excluding t3404, which sees independent development elsewhere
at the time of writing, we use `main` as the default branch name in
t34*. This trick was performed via

	$ (cd t &&
	   sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
		-e 's/Master/Main/g' -- t34*.sh &&
	   git checkout HEAD -- t34\*)

This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

334afbc76f tests: mark tests relying on the current default for init.defaultBranch
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.

To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in

- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,

- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
  initialize the default branch,

- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,

- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
  uses `master`)

This trick was performed by this command:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
	t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh

After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:

	$ git checkout HEAD -- \
		t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
		t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \
		t/t1305-config-include.sh t/t1309-early-config.sh \

		t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
		t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh

We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:

	$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
	GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
	export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
	' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

1f6965f994 sequencer: honor GIT_REFLOG_ACTION
There is a lot of code to honor GIT_REFLOG_ACTION throughout git,
including some in sequencer.c; unfortunately, reflog_message() and its
callers ignored it. Instruct reflog_message() to check the existing
environment variable, and use it when present as an override to
action_name().

Also restructure pick_commits() to only temporarily modify
GIT_REFLOG_ACTION for a short duration and then restore the old value,
so that when we do this setting within a loop we do not keep adding "
(pick)" substrings and end up with a reflog message of the form
rebase (pick) (pick) (pick) (finish): returning to refs/heads/master

10cdb9f38a rebase: rename the two primary rebase backends
Two related changes, with separate rationale for each:

Rename the 'interactive' backend to 'merge' because:
  * 'interactive' as a name caused confusion; this backend has been used
for many kinds of non-interactive rebases, and will probably be used
in the future for more non-interactive rebases than interactive ones
given that we are making it the default.
  * 'interactive' is not the underlying strategy; merging is.
  * the directory where state is stored is not called
    .git/rebase-interactive but .git/rebase-merge.

Rename the 'am' backend to 'apply' because:
  * Few users are familiar with git-am as a reference point.
  * Related to the above, the name 'am' makes sentences in the
documentation harder for users to read and comprehend (they may read
it as the verb from "I am"); avoiding this difficult places a large
burden on anyone writing documentation about this backend to be very
careful with quoting and sentence structure and often forces
annoying redundancy to try to avoid such problems.
  * Users stumble over pronunciation ("am" as in "I am a person not a
backend" or "am" as in "the first and thirteenth letters in the
alphabet in order are "A-M"); this may drive confusion when one user
tries to explain to another what they are doing.
  * While "am" is the tool driving this backend, the tool driving git-am
is git-apply, and since we are driving towards lower-level tools
for the naming of the merge backend we may as well do so here too.
  * The directory where state is stored has never been called
.git/rebase-am, it was always called .git/rebase-apply.

For all the reasons listed above:
  * Modify the documentation to refer to the backends with the new names
  * Provide a brief note in the documentation connecting the new names
to the old names in case users run across the old names anywhere
(e.g. in old release notes or older versions of the documentation)
  * Change the (new) --am command line flag to --apply
  * Rename some enums, variables, and functions to reinforce the new
backend names for us as well.

68aa495b59 rebase: implement --merge via the interactive machinery
As part of an ongoing effort to make rebase have more uniform behavior,
modify the merge backend to behave like the interactive one, by
re-implementing it on top of the latter.

Interactive rebases are implemented in terms of cherry-pick rather than
the merge-recursive builtin, but cherry-pick also calls into the
recursive merge machinery by default and can accept special merge
strategies and/or special strategy options. As such, there really is
not any need for having both git-rebase--merge and
git-rebase--interactive anymore. Delete git-rebase--merge.sh and
instead implement it in builtin/rebase.c.

This results in a few deliberate but small user-visible changes:
  * The progress output is modified (see t3406 and t3420 for examples)
  * A few known test failures are now fixed (see t3421)
  * bash-prompt during a rebase --merge is now REBASE-i instead of
    REBASE-m.  Reason: The prompt is a reflection of the backend in use;
this allows users to report an issue to the git mailing list with
the appropriate backend information, and allows advanced users to
know where to search for relevant control files. (see t9903)

testcase modification notes:
t3406: --interactive and --merge had slightly different progress output
while running; adjust a test to match the new expectation
t3420: these test precise output while running, but rebase--am,
rebase--merge, and rebase--interactive all were built on very
different commands (am, merge-recursive, cherry-pick), so the
tests expected different output for each type. Now we expect
--merge and --interactive to have the same output.
t3421: --interactive fixes some bugs in --merge! Wahoo!
t9903: --merge uses the interactive backend so the prompt expected is
         now REBASE-i.

8797f0f008 rebase --stat: fix when rebasing to an unrelated history
When rebasing to a commit history that has no common commits with the
current branch, there is no merge base. In diffstat mode, this means
that we cannot compare to the merge base, but we have to compare to the
empty tree instead.

Also, if running in verbose diffstat mode, we should not output

	Changes from <merge-base> to <onto>

as that does not make sense without any merge base.

Note: neither scripted nor built-in versoin of `git rebase` were
prepared for this situation well. We use this opportunity not only to
fix the bug(s), but also to make both versions' output consistent in
this instance. And add a regression test to keep this working in all

13a5a9f0fd rebase: fix GIT_REFLOG_ACTION regression
The scripted version of "rebase" honored the `GIT_REFLOG_ACTION`,
and some automation scripts expected the reflog entries to be

This regressed in the reimplementation in C.

Fix that, and add a regression test, both with `GIT_REFLOG_ACTION`
set and unset.

Note: the reflog message for "rebase finished" did *not* honor

It is a good idea to error out early upon seeing, say, `-Cbad`, rather
than starting the rebase only to have the `--am` backend complain later.

Let's do this.

The only options accepting parameters which we pass through to `git am`

`--whitespace`. The other options we pass through do not accept
parameters, so we do not have to validate them here.

6cdccfce1e i18n: make GETTEXT_POISON a runtime option
Change the GETTEXT_POISON compile-time + runtime GIT_GETTEXT_POISON
test parameter to only be a GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=<non-empty?>
runtime parameter, to be consistent with other parameters documented
in "Running tests with special setups" in t/README.

When I added GETTEXT_POISON in bb946bba76 ("i18n: add GETTEXT_POISON
to simulate unfriendly translator", 2011-02-22) I was concerned with
ensuring that the _() function would get constant folded if NO_GETTEXT
was defined, and likewise that GETTEXT_POISON would be compiled out
unless it was defined.

But as the benchmark in my [1] shows doing a one-off runtime
getenv("GIT_TEST_[...]") is trivial, and since GETTEXT_POISON was
originally added the GIT_TEST_* env variables have become the common
idiom for turning on special test setups.

So change GETTEXT_POISON to work the same way. Now the
GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease compile-time option is gone, and running the
tests with GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=[YesPlease|] can be toggled on/off
without recompiling.

This allows for conditionally amending tests to test with/without
poison, similar to what 859fdc0c3c ("commit-graph: define
GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH", 2018-08-29) did for GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH. Do
some of that, now we e.g. always run the t0205-gettext-poison.sh test.

I did enough there to remove the GETTEXT_POISON prerequisite, but its
inverse C_LOCALE_OUTPUT is still around, and surely some tests using
it can be converted to e.g. always set GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=.

Notes on the implementation:

 * We still compile a dedicated GETTEXT_POISON build in Travis
CI. Perhaps this should be revisited and integrated into the
"linux-gcc" build, see ae59a4e44f ("travis: run tests with
GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX", 2018-01-07) for prior art in that area. Then
   again maybe not, see [2].

 * We now skip a test in t0000-basic.sh under
GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease that wasn't skipped before. This
test relies on C locale output, but due to an edge case in how the
previous implementation of GETTEXT_POISON worked (reading it from
GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS) wasn't enabling poison correctly. Now it does,
   and needs to be skipped.

 * The getenv() function is not reentrant, so out of paranoia about
   code of the form:

       printf(_("%s"), getenv("some-env"));

call use_gettext_poison() in our early setup in git_setup_gettext()
so we populate the "poison_requested" variable in a codepath that's
won't suffer from that race condition.

 * We error out in the Makefile if you're still saying
GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease to prompt users to change their
   invocation.

 * We should not print out poisoned messages during the test
initialization itself to keep it more readable, so the test library
hides the variable if set in $GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON_ORIG during
   setup. See [3].

c9581cc800 tests: move test for rebase messages from t3400 to t3406
t3406 is supposed to test "messages from rebase operation", so let's
move tests in t3400 that fit that description into 3406. Most of the
functionality they tested, except for the messages, has now been
subsumed by t3420.

c7108bf9ed i18n: rebase: mark messages for translation
Mark messages in git-rebase.sh for translation. While doing this
Jonathan noticed that the comma usage and sentence structure of the
resolvemsg was not quite right, so correct that and its cousins in
git-am.sh and t/t0201-gettext-fallbacks.sh at the same time.

Some tests would start to fail with GETTEXT_POISON turned on after
this update. Use test_i18ncmp and test_i18ngrep where appropriate
to mark strings that should only be checked in the C locale output
to avoid such issues.

9180feafbc rebase: report invalid commit correctly
In 9765b6a (rebase: align variable content, 2011-02-06), the code
to error out was moved up one level. Unfortunately, one reference
to a function parameter wasn't rewritten as it should, leading to
the wrong parameter being errored on.

This error was propagated by 71786f5 (rebase: factor out reference
parsing, 2011-02-06) and merged in 78c6e0f (Merge branch
'mz/rebase', 2011-04-28).

Correct this by reporting $onto_name istead.

a48fcd8369 tests: add missing &&
Breaks in a test assertion's && chain can potentially hide
failures from earlier commands in the chain.

Commands intended to fail should be marked with !, test_must_fail, or
test_might_fail. The examples in this patch do not require that.

a9c3821ca2 git-rebase: Add --stat and --no-stat for producing diffstat on rebase
The behavior of --verbose is unchanged, but uses a different state
variable internally, so that the meaning of verbose output may be
expanded without affecting the diffstat. This is also reflected in
the documentation.

The configuration option rebase.stat works the same was as merg.stat,
but the default is currently false.

82ebb0b6ec add test_cmp function for test scripts
Many scripts compare actual and expected output using
"diff -u". This is nicer than "cmp" because the output shows
how the two differ. However, not all versions of diff
understand -u, leading to unnecessary test failure.

This adds a test_cmp function to the test scripts and
switches all "diff -u" invocations to use it. The function
uses the contents of "$GIT_TEST_CMP" to compare its
arguments; the default is "diff -u".

On systems with a less-capable diff, you can do:

  GIT_TEST_CMP=cmp make test

7afa845edc rebase -m: Fix incorrect short-logs of already applied commits.
When a topic branch is rebased, some of whose commits are already
cherry-picked upstream:

    o--X--A--B--Y <- master
     \
      A--B--Z <- topic

then 'git rebase -m master' would report:

    Already applied: 0001 Y
    Already applied: 0002 Y

With this fix it reports the expected:

    Already applied: 0001 A
    Already applied: 0002 B

As an added bonus, this change also avoids 'echo' of a commit message,
which might contain escapements.
