7a98d9ab00 revisions API: have release_revisions() release "cmdline"
Extend the the release_revisions() function so that it frees the
"cmdline" in the "struct rev_info". This in combination with a
preceding change to free "commits" and "mailmap" means that we can
whitelist another test under "TEST_PASSES_SANITIZE_LEAK=true".

There was a proposal in [1] to do away with xstrdup()-ing this
add_rev_cmdline(), perhaps that would be worthwhile, but for now let's
just free() it.

We could also make that a "char *" in "struct rev_cmdline_entry"
itself, but since we own it let's expose it as a constant to outside
callers. I proposed that in [2] but have since changed my mind. See
14d30cdfc0 (ref-filter: fix memory leak in `free_array_item()`,
2019-07-10), c514c62a4f (checkout: fix leak of non-existent branch
names, 2020-08-14) and other log history hits for "free((char *)" for
prior art.

This includes the tests we had false-positive passes on before my
6798b08e84 (perl Git.pm: don't ignore signalled failure in
_cmd_close(), 2022-02-01), now they pass for real.

Since there are 66 tests matching t/t[0-9]*git-svn*.sh it's easier to
list those that don't pass than to touch most of those 66. So let's
introduce a "TEST_FAILS_SANITIZE_LEAK=true", which if set in the tests
won't cause lib-git-svn.sh to set "TEST_PASSES_SANITIZE_LEAK=true.

This change also marks all the tests that we removed
"TEST_FAILS_SANITIZE_LEAK=true" from in an earlier commit due to
removing the UNLEAK() from cmd_format_patch(), we can now assert that
its API use doesn't leak any "struct rev_info" memory.

This change also made commit "t5503-tagfollow.sh" pass on current
master, but that would regress when combined with
ps/fetch-atomic-fixup's de004e848a (t5503: simplify setup of test
which exercises failure of backfill, 2022-03-03) (through no fault of
that topic, that change started using "git clone" in the test, which
has an outstanding leak). Let's leave that test out for now to avoid
in-flight semantic conflicts.

5b911a29ff diff tests: don't ignore "git rev-list" exit code
Change a fragile pattern introduced in 2b459b483c (diff: make sure
work tree side is shown as 0{40} when different, 2008-03-02) to check
the exit code of "git rev-list", while we're at it let's get rid of
the needless sub-shell for invoking it in favor of the "-C" option.

Because of this I'd marked these tests as passing under SANITIZE=leak
in 16d4bd4f14 (leak tests: mark some diff tests as passing with
SANITIZE=leak, 2021-10-31), let's remove the
"TEST_PASSES_SANITIZE_LEAK=true" annotation as they no longer do.

8ef9312464 diff: do not show submodule with untracked files as "-dirty"
Git diff reports a submodule directory as -dirty even when there are
only untracked files in the submodule directory. This is inconsistent
with what `git describe --dirty` says when run in the submodule
directory in that state.

Make `--ignore-submodules=untracked` the default for `git diff` when
there is no configuration variable or command line option, so that the
command would not give '-dirty' suffix to a submodule whose working
tree has untracked files, to make it consistent with `git
describe --dirty` that is run in the submodule working tree.

And also make `--ignore-submodules=none` the default for `git status`
so that the user doesn't end up deleting a submodule that has
uncommitted (untracked) files.

1c5e94f459 tests: use 'test_must_be_empty' instead of 'test_cmp <empty> <out>'
Using 'test_must_be_empty' is shorter and more idiomatic than

  >empty &&
  test_cmp empty out

as it saves the creation of an empty file. Furthermore, sometimes the
expected empty file doesn't have such a descriptive name like 'empty',
and its creation is far away from the place where it's finally used
for comparison (e.g. in 't7600-merge.sh', where two expected empty
files are created in the 'setup' test, but are used only about 500
lines later).

These cases were found by instrumenting 'test_cmp' to error out the
test script when it's used to compare empty files, and then converted
manually.

Note that even after this patch there still remain a lot of cases
where we use 'test_cmp' to check empty files:

  - Sometimes the expected output is not hard-coded in the test, but
'test_cmp' is used to ensure that two similar git commands produce
the same output, and that output happens to be empty, e.g. the
test 'submodule update --merge - ignores --merge for new
    submodules' in 't7406-submodule-update.sh'.

  - Repetitive common tasks, including preparing the expected results
and running 'test_cmp', are often extracted into a helper
function, and some of this helper's callsites expect no output.

  - For the same reason as above, the whole 'test_expect_success'
block is within a helper function, e.g. in 't3070-wildmatch.sh'.

  - Or 'test_cmp' is invoked in a loop, e.g. the test 'cvs update
    (-p)' in 't9400-git-cvsserver-server.sh'.

ec10b018e7 tests: use 'test_must_be_empty' instead of '! test -s'
Using 'test_must_be_empty' is preferable to '! test -s', because it
gives a helpful error message if the given file is unexpectedly not
empty, while the latter remains completely silent. Furthermore, it
also catches cases when the given file unexpectedly does not exist at
all.

This patch was basically created by:

  sed -i -e 's/! test -s/test_must_be_empty/' t[0-9]*.sh

with the following notable exceptions:

  - The '! test -s' check in '.gitmodules ignore=dirty suppresses
submodules with untracked content' in 't7508-status.sh' is left
as-is, because it's bogus and, therefore, it's subject of a
    dedicated patch.

  - The '! test -s' checks in 't9131-git-svn-empty-symlink.sh' and
    't9135-git-svn-moved-branch-empty-file.sh' are immediately
preceeded by a 'test -f' to ensure that the files exist in the
first place. 'test_must_be_empty' ensures that as well, so those
'test -f' commands are removed as well.

078b75e99b diff: stop allowing diff to have submodules configured in .git/config
Traditionally a submodule is comprised of a gitlink as well as a
corresponding entry in the .gitmodules file. Diff doesn't follow this
paradigm as its config callback routine falls back to populating the
submodule-config if a config entry starts with 'submodule.'.

Remove this behavior in order to be consistent with how the
submodule-config is populated, via calling 'gitmodules_config()' or
'repo_read_gitmodules()'.

302ad7a993 Submodules: Use "ignore" settings from .gitmodules too for diff and status
The .gitmodules file is parsed for "submodule.<name>.ignore" entries
before looking for them in .git/config. Thus settings found in .git/config
will override those from .gitmodules, thereby allowing the local developer
to ignore settings given by the remote side while also letting upstream
set defaults for those users who don't have special needs.

aee9c7d654 Submodules: Add the new "ignore" config option for diff and status
The new "ignore" config option controls the default behavior for "git
status" and the diff family. It specifies under what circumstances they
consider submodules as modified and can be set separately for each
submodule.

The command line option "--ignore-submodules=" has been extended to accept
the new parameter "none" for both status and diff.

Users that chose submodules to get rid of long work tree scanning times
might want to set the "dirty" option for those submodules. This brings
back the pre 1.7.0 behavior, where submodule work trees were never
scanned for modifications. By using "--ignore-submodules=none" on the
command line the status and diff commands can be told to do a full scan.

This option can be set to the following values (which have the same name
and meaning as for the "--ignore-submodules" option of status and diff):

"all": All changes to the submodule will be ignored.

"dirty": Only differences of the commit recorded in the superproject and
the submodules HEAD will be considered modifications, all changes
to the work tree of the submodule will be ignored. When using this
value, the submodule will not be scanned for work tree changes at
all, leading to a performance benefit on large submodules.

"untracked": Only untracked files in the submodules work tree are ignored,
a changed HEAD and/or modified files in the submodule will mark it
	as modified.

"none" (which is the default): Either untracked or modified files in a
submodules work tree or a difference between the subdmodules HEAD
and the commit recorded in the superproject will make it show up
as changed. This value is added as a new parameter for the
"--ignore-submodules" option of the diff family and "git status"
so the user can override the settings in the configuration.

dd44d419d3 Add optional parameters to the diff option "--ignore-submodules"
In some use cases it is not desirable that the diff family considers
submodules that only contain untracked content as dirty. This may happen
e.g. when the submodule is not under the developers control and not all
build generated files have been added to .gitignore by the upstream
developers. Using the "untracked" parameter for the "--ignore-submodules"
option disables checking for untracked content and lets git diff report
them as changed only when they have new commits or modified content.

Sometimes it is not wanted to have submodules show up as changed when they
just contain changes to their work tree. An example for that are scripts
which just want to check for submodule commits while ignoring any changes
to the work tree. Also users having large submodules known not to change
might want to use this option, as the - sometimes substantial - time it
takes to scan the submodule work tree(s) is saved.

8e08b4198c Teach diff that modified submodule directory is dirty
A diff run in superproject only compares the name of the commit object
bound at the submodule paths. When we compare with a work tree and the

bfdbee9810 tests: use $TEST_DIRECTORY to refer to the t/ directory
Many test scripts assumed that they will start in a 'trash' subdirectory
that is a single level down from the t/ directory, and referred to their
test vector files by asking for files like "../t9999/expect". This will
break if we move the 'trash' subdirectory elsewhere.

To solve this, we earlier introduced "$TEST_DIRECTORY" so that they can
refer to t/ directory reliably. This finally makes all the tests use
it to refer to the outside environment.

With this patch, and a one-liner not included here (because it would
contradict with what Dscho really wants to do):

| diff --git a/t/test-lib.sh b/t/test-lib.sh

1392a37721 diff: a submodule not checked out is not modified
948dd34 (diff-index: careful when inspecting work tree items, 2008-03-30)
made the work tree check careful not to be fooled by a new directory that
exists at a place the index expects a blob. For such a change to be a
typechange from blob to submodule, the new directory has to be a
repository.

However, if the index expects a submodule there, we should not insist the
work tree entity to be a repository --- a simple directory that is not a
full fledged repository (even an empty directory would do) should be
considered an unmodified subproject, because that is how a superproject
with a submodule is checked out sparsely by default.

This makes the function check_work_tree_entity() even more careful not to
report a submodule that is not checked out as removed. It fixes the
recently added test in t4027.

82ebb0b6ec add test_cmp function for test scripts
Many scripts compare actual and expected output using
"diff -u". This is nicer than "cmp" because the output shows
how the two differ. However, not all versions of diff
understand -u, leading to unnecessary test failure.

This adds a test_cmp function to the test scripts and
switches all "diff -u" invocations to use it. The function
uses the contents of "$GIT_TEST_CMP" to compare its
arguments; the default is "diff -u".

On systems with a less-capable diff, you can do:

Ping Yin noticed that "git diff-index --raw" shows 0{40} when work tree

There was a mistake in the diffcore_skip_stat_unmatch() that was meant to
clean up the stat-only difference for running diff between the index and
work tree and diff between the tree and the work tree, to cause it re-read
from the submodule repository HEAD. When ce_stat_match() says work tree
is different, we should always say 0{40} on the work tree side.
