b2a51c1b03 mergetool: do not enable hideResolved by default
When 98ea309b3f (mergetool: add hideResolved configuration,
2021-02-09) introduced the mergetool.hideResolved setting to reduce
the clutter in viewing non-conflicted sections of files in a
mergetool, it enabled it by default, explaining:

No adverse effects were noted in a small survey of popular mergetools[1]
so this behavior defaults to `true`.

In practice, alas, adverse effects do appear. A few issues:

1. No indication is shown in the UI that the base, local, and remote
versions shown have been modified by additional resolution. This
is inherent in the design: the idea of mergetool.hideResolved is to
convince a mergetool that expects pristine local, base, and remote
   files to show partially resolved verisons of those files instead;
there is no additional source of information accessible to the
mergetool to see where the resolution has happened.

(By contrast, a mergetool generating the partial resolution from
conflict markers for itself would be able to hilight the resolved
   sections with a different color.)

A user accustomed to seeing the files without partial resolution
gets no indication that this behavior has changed when they upgrade
   Git.

2. If the computed merge did not line up the files correctly (for
example due to repeated sections in the file), the partially
resolved files can be misleading and do not have enough information
to reconstruct what happened and compute the correct merge result.

3. Resolving a conflict can involve information beyond the textual
conflict. For example, if the local and remote versions added
overlapping functionality in different ways, seeing the full
unresolved versions of each alongside the base gives information
about each side's intent that makes it possible to come up with a
resolution that combines those two intents. By contrast, when
starting with partially resolved versions of those files, one can
produce a subtly wrong resolution that includes redundant extra
code added by one side that is not needed in the approach taken
   on the other.

All that said, a user wanting to focus on textual conflicts with
reduced clutter can still benefit from mergetool.hideResolved=true as
a way to deemphasize sections of the code that resolve cleanly without
requiring any changes to the invoked mergetool. The caveats described
above are reduced when the user has explicitly turned this on, because
then the user is aware of them.

Flip the default to 'false'.

702110aac6 commit-graph: use config to specify generation type
We have two established generation number versions:

 1: topological levels
 2: corrected commit dates

The corrected commit dates are enabled by default, but they also write
extra data in the GDAT and GDOV chunks. Services that host Git data
might want to have more control over when this feature rolls out than
just updating the Git binaries.

Add a new "commitGraph.generationVersion" config option that specifies
the intended generation number version. If this value is less than 2,
then the GDAT chunk is never written _or read_ from an existing file.

This can replace our use of the GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH_NO_GDAT
environment variable in the test suite. Remove it.

9d9cf23031 mergetool: add per-tool support and overrides for the hideResolved flag
Add a per-tool override flag so that users may enable the flag for one
tool and disable it for another by setting
`mergetool.<tool>.hideResolved` to `false`.

In addition, the author or maintainer of a mergetool may optionally
override the default `hideResolved` value for that mergetool. If the
`mergetools/<tool>` shell script contains a `hide_resolved_enabled`
function it will be called when the mergetool is invoked and the return
value will be used as the default for the `hideResolved` flag.

    hide_resolved_enabled () {
        return 1
    }

Disabling may be desirable if the mergetool wants or needs access to the
original, unmodified 'LOCAL' and 'REMOTE' versions of the conflicted
file. For example:

- A tool may use a custom conflict resolution algorithm and prefer to
ignore the results of Git's conflict resolution.
- A tool may want to visually compare/constrast the version of the file
from before the merge (saved to 'LOCAL', 'REMOTE', and 'BASE') with
Git's conflict resolution results (saved to 'MERGED').

98ea309b3f mergetool: add hideResolved configuration
The purpose of a mergetool is to help the user resolve any conflicts
that Git cannot automatically resolve. If there is a conflict that must
be resolved manually Git will write a file named MERGED which contains
everything Git was able to resolve by itself and also everything that it
was not able to resolve wrapped in conflict markers.

One way to think of MERGED is as a two- or three-way diff. If each
"side" of the conflict markers is separately extracted an external tool
can represent those conflicts as a side-by-side diff.

However many mergetools instead diff LOCAL and REMOTE both of which
contain versions of the file from before the merge. Since the conflicts
Git resolved automatically are not present it forces the user to
manually re-resolve those conflicts. Some mergetools also show MERGED
but often only for reference and not as the focal point to resolve the
conflicts.

This adds a `mergetool.hideResolved` flag that will overwrite LOCAL and
REMOTE with each corresponding "side" of a conflicted file and thus hide
all conflicts that Git was able to resolve itself. Overwriting these
files will immediately benefit any mergetool that uses them without
requiring any changes to the tool.

No adverse effects were noted in a small survey of popular mergetools[1]
so this behavior defaults to `true`. However it can be globally disabled
by setting `mergetool.hideResolved` to `false`.

4f37d45706 clone: respect remote unborn HEAD
Teach Git to use the "unborn" feature introduced in a previous patch as
follows: Git will always send the "unborn" argument if it is supported
by the server. During "git clone", if cloning an empty repository, Git
will use the new information to determine the local branch to create. In
all other cases, Git will ignore it.

59e1205d16 ls-refs: report unborn targets of symrefs
When cloning, we choose the default branch based on the remote HEAD.
But if there is no remote HEAD reported (which could happen if the
target of the remote HEAD is unborn), we'll fall back to using our local
init.defaultBranch. Traditionally this hasn't been a big deal, because
most repos used "master" as the default. But these days it is likely to
cause confusion if the server and client implementations choose
different values (e.g., if the remote started with "main", we may choose
"master" locally, create commits there, and then the user is surprised
when they push to "master" and not "main").

To solve this, the remote needs to communicate the target of the HEAD
symref, even if it is unborn, and "git clone" needs to use this
information.

Currently, symrefs that have unborn targets (such as in this case) are
not communicated by the protocol. Teach Git to advertise and support the
"unborn" feature in "ls-refs" (by default, this is advertised, but
server administrators may turn this off through the lsrefs.unborn
config). This feature indicates that "ls-refs" supports the "unborn"
argument; when it is specified, "ls-refs" will send the HEAD symref with
the name of its unborn target.

This change is only for protocol v2. A similar change for protocol v0
would require independent protocol design (there being no analogous
position to signal support for "unborn") and client-side plumbing of the
data required, so the scope of this patch set is limited to protocol v2.

The client side will be updated to use this in a subsequent commit.

8ef9312464 diff: do not show submodule with untracked files as "-dirty"
Git diff reports a submodule directory as -dirty even when there are
only untracked files in the submodule directory. This is inconsistent
with what `git describe --dirty` says when run in the submodule
directory in that state.

Make `--ignore-submodules=untracked` the default for `git diff` when
there is no configuration variable or command line option, so that the
command would not give '-dirty' suffix to a submodule whose working
tree has untracked files, to make it consistent with `git
describe --dirty` that is run in the submodule working tree.

And also make `--ignore-submodules=none` the default for `git status`
so that the user doesn't end up deleting a submodule that has
uncommitted (untracked) files.

3baf58bfb4 format-patch: make output filename configurable
For the past 15 years, we've used the hardcoded 64 as the length
limit of the filename of the output from the "git format-patch"
command. Since the value is shorter than the 80-column terminal, it
could grow without line wrapping a bit. At the same time, since the
value is longer than half of the 80-column terminal, we could fit
two or more of them in "ls" output on such a terminal if we allowed
to lower it.

Introduce a new command line option --filename-max-length=<n> and a
new configuration variable format.filenameMaxLength to override the
hardcoded default.

While we are at it, remove a check that the name of output directory
does not exceed PATH_MAX---this check is pointless in that by the
time control reaches the function, the caller would already have
done an equivalent of "mkdir -p", so if the system does not like an
overly long directory name, the control wouldn't have reached here,
and otherwise, we know that the system allowed the output directory
to exist. In the worst case, we will get an error when we try to
open the output file and handle the error correctly anyway.

3abd4a67d9 Documentation: stylistically normalize references to Signed-off-by:
Ted reported an old typo in the git-commit.txt and merge-options.txt.
Namely, the phrase "Signed-off-by line" was used without either a
definite nor indefinite article.

Upon examination, it seems that the documentation (including items in
Documentation/, but also option help strings) have been quite
inconsistent on usage when referring to `Signed-off-by`.

First, very few places used a definite or indefinite article with the
phrase "Signed-off-by line", but that was the initial typo that led
to this investigation. So, normalize using either an indefinite or
definite article consistently.

The original phrasing, in Commit 3f971fc425 (Documentation updates,
2005-08-14), is "Add Signed-off-by line". Commit 6f855371a5 (Add
--signoff, --check, and long option-names. 2005-12-09) switched to
using "Add `Signed-off-by:` line", but didn't normalize the former
commit to match. Later commits seem to have cut and pasted from one
or the other, which is likely how the usage became so inconsistent.

Junio stated on the git mailing list in
<xmqqy2k1dfoh.fsf@gitster.c.googlers.com> a preference to leave off
the colon. Thus, prefer `Signed-off-by` (with backticks) for the
documentation files and Signed-off-by (without backticks) for option
help strings.

Additionally, Junio argued that "trailer" is now the standard term to
refer to `Signed-off-by`, saying that "becomes plenty clear that we
are not talking about any random line in the log message". As such,
prefer "trailer" over "line" anywhere the former word fits.

However, leave alone those few places in documentation that use
Signed-off-by to refer to the process (rather than the specific
trailer), or in places where mail headers are generally discussed in
comparison with Signed-off-by.

a4cb1a2339 maintenance: create maintenance.strategy config
To provide an on-ramp for users to use background maintenance without
several 'git config' commands, create a 'maintenance.strategy' config
option. Currently, the only important value is 'incremental' which
assigns the following schedule:

* gc: never
* prefetch: hourly
* commit-graph: hourly
* loose-objects: daily
* incremental-repack: daily

These tasks are chosen to minimize disruptions to foreground Git
commands and use few compute resources.

The 'maintenance.strategy' is intended as a baseline that can be
customzied further by manually assigning 'maintenance.<task>.enabled'
and 'maintenance.<task>.schedule' config options, which will override
any recommendation from 'maintenance.strategy'. This operates similarly
to config options like 'feature.experimental' which operate as "meta"
config options that change default config values.

This presents a way forward for updating the 'incremental' strategy in
the future or adding new strategies. For example, a potential strategy
could be to include a 'full' strategy that runs the 'gc' task weekly
and no other tasks by default.

7efba5fa39 format-patch: teach format.useAutoBase "whenAble" option
The format.useAutoBase configuration option exists to allow users to
enable '--base=auto' for format-patch by default.

This can sometimes lead to poor workflow, due to unexpected failures
when attempting to format an ancient patch:

    $ git format-patch -1 <an old commit>
fatal: base commit shouldn't be in revision list

This can be very confusing, as it is not necessarily immediately obvious
that the user requested a --base (since this was in the configuration,
not on the command line).

We do want --base=auto to fail when it cannot provide a suitable base,
as it would be equally confusing if a formatted patch did not include
the base information when it was requested.

Teach format.useAutoBase a new mode, "whenAble". This mode will cause
format-patch to attempt to include a base commit when it can. However,
if no valid base commit can be found, then format-patch will continue
formatting the patch without a base commit.

In order to avoid making yet another branch name unusable with --base,
do not teach --base=whenAble or --base=whenable.

Instead, refactor the base_commit option to use a callback, and rely on
the global configuration variable auto_base.

This does mean that a user cannot request this optional base commit
generation from the command line. However, this is likely not too
valuable. If the user requests base information manually, they will be
immediately informed of the failure to acquire a suitable base commit.
This allows the user to make an informed choice about whether to
continue the format.

Add tests to cover the new mode of operation for --base.

eb049759fb protocol: re-enable v2 protocol by default
Protocol v2 became the default in v2.26.0 via 684ceae32d (fetch: default
to protocol version 2, 2019-12-23). More widespread use turned up a
regression in negotiation. That was fixed in v2.27.0 via 4fa3f00abb
(fetch-pack: in protocol v2, in_vain only after ACK, 2020-04-27), but we
also reverted the default to v0 as a precuation in 11c7f2a30b (Revert
"fetch: default to protocol version 2", 2020-04-22).

In v2.28.0, we re-enabled it for experimental users with 3697caf4b9
(config: let feature.experimental imply protocol.version=2, 2020-05-20)
and haven't heard any complaints. v2.28 has only been out for 2 months,
but I'd generally expect people turning on feature.experimental to also
stay pretty up-to-date. So we're not likely to collect much more data by
waiting. In addition, we have no further reports from people running
v2.26.0, and of course some people have been setting protocol.version
manually for ages.

Let's move forward with v2 as the default again. It's possible there are
still lurking bugs, but we won't know until it gets more widespread use.
And we can find and squash them just like any other bug at this point.

b08ff1fee0 maintenance: add --schedule option and config
Maintenance currently triggers when certain data-size thresholds are
met, such as number of pack-files or loose objects. Users may want to
run certain maintenance tasks based on frequency instead. For example,
a user may want to perform a 'prefetch' task every hour, or 'gc' task
every day. To help these users, update the 'git maintenance run' command
to include a '--schedule=<frequency>' option. The allowed frequencies
are 'hourly', 'daily', and 'weekly'. These values are also allowed in a
new config value 'maintenance.<task>.schedule'.

The 'git maintenance run --schedule=<frequency>' checks the '*.schedule'
config value for each enabled task to see if the configured frequency is
at least as frequent as the frequency from the '--schedule' argument. We
use the following order, for full clarity:

	'hourly' > 'daily' > 'weekly'

Use new 'enum schedule_priority' to track these values numerically.

The following cron table would run the scheduled tasks with the correct
frequencies:

  0 1-23 * * * git -C <repo> maintenance run --schedule=hourly
  0 0 * * 1-6 git -C <repo> maintenance run --schedule=daily
  0 0 * * 0 git -C <repo> maintenance run --schedule=weekly

This cron schedule will run --schedule=hourly every hour except at
midnight. This avoids a concurrent run with the --schedule=daily that
runs at midnight every day except the first day of the week. This avoids
a concurrent run with the --schedule=weekly that runs at midnight on
the first day of the week. Since --schedule=daily also runs the
'hourly' tasks and --schedule=weekly runs the 'hourly' and 'daily'
tasks, we will still see all tasks run with the proper frequencies.

1942d48380 maintenance: optionally skip --auto process
Some commands run 'git maintenance run --auto --[no-]quiet' after doing

Currently, users who do not want this maintenance to occur would set the

e841a79a13 maintenance: add incremental-repack auto condition
The incremental-repack task updates the multi-pack-index by deleting pack-
files that have been replaced with new packs, then repacking a batch of
small pack-files into a larger pack-file. This incremental repack is faster
than rewriting all object data, but is slower than some other
maintenance activities.

The 'maintenance.incremental-repack.auto' config option specifies how many
pack-files should exist outside of the multi-pack-index before running
the step. These pack-files could be created by 'git fetch' commands or
by the loose-objects task. The default value is 10.

Setting the option to zero disables the task with the '--auto' option,
and a negative value makes the task run every time.

18e449f86b midx: enable core.multiPackIndex by default
The core.multiPackIndex setting has been around since c4d25228eb
(config: create core.multiPackIndex setting, 2018-07-12), but has been
disabled by default. If a user wishes to use the multi-pack-index
feature, then they must enable this config and run 'git multi-pack-index
write'.

The multi-pack-index feature is relatively stable now, so make the
config option true by default. For users that do not use a
multi-pack-index, the only extra cost will be a file lookup to see if a
multi-pack-index file exists (once per process, per object directory).

Also, this config option will be referenced by an upcoming
"incremental-repack" task in the maintenance builtin, so move the config
option into the repository settings struct. Note that if
GIT_TEST_MULTI_PACK_INDEX=1, then we want to ignore the config option
and treat core.multiPackIndex as enabled.

3e220e6069 maintenance: create auto condition for loose-objects
The loose-objects task deletes loose objects that already exist in a
pack-file, then place the remaining loose objects into a new pack-file.
If this step runs all the time, then we risk creating pack-files with
very few objects with every 'git commit' process. To prevent
overwhelming the packs directory with small pack-files, place a minimum
number of objects to justify the task.

The 'maintenance.loose-objects.auto' config option specifies a minimum
number of loose objects to justify the task to run under the '--auto'
option. This defaults to 100 loose objects. Setting the value to zero
will prevent the step from running under '--auto' while a negative value
will force it to run every time.

4ddc79b2da maintenance: add auto condition for commit-graph task
Instead of writing a new commit-graph in every 'git maintenance run
--auto' process (when maintenance.commit-graph.enalbed is configured to
be true), only write when there are "enough" commits not in a
commit-graph file.

This count is controlled by the maintenance.commit-graph.auto config
option.

To compute the count, use a depth-first search starting at each ref, and
leaving markers using the SEEN flag. If this count reaches the limit,
then terminate early and start the task. Otherwise, this operation will
peel every ref and parse the commit it points to. If these are all in
the commit-graph, then this is typically a very fast operation. Users
with many refs might feel a slow-down, and hence could consider updating
their limit to be very small. A negative value will force the step to
run every time.

b66d84756f commit-graph: respect 'commitGraph.readChangedPaths'
Git uses the 'core.commitGraph' configuration value to control whether
or not the commit graph is used when parsing commits or performing a
traversal.

Now that commit-graphs can also contain a section for changed-path Bloom
filters, administrators that already have commit-graphs may find it
convenient to use those graphs without relying on their changed-path
Bloom filters. This can happen, for example, during a staged roll-out,
or in the event of an incident.

Introduce 'commitGraph.readChangedPaths' to control whether or not Bloom
filters are read. Note that this configuration is independent from both:

  - 'core.commitGraph', to allow flexibility in using all parts of a
commit-graph _except_ for its Bloom filters.

  - The '--changed-paths' option for 'git commit-graph write', to allow
reading and writing Bloom filters to be controlled independently.

When the variable is set, pretend as if no Bloom data was specified at
all. This avoids adding additional special-casing outside of the
commit-graph internals.

Add a new multi-valued config variable "receive.procReceiveRefs"
for `receive-pack` command, like the follows:

git config --system --add receive.procReceiveRefs refs/for
git config --system --add receive.procReceiveRefs refs/drafts

If the specific prefix strings given by the config variables match the
reference names of the commands which are sent from git client to
`receive-pack`, these commands will be executed by an external hook
(named "proc-receive"), instead of the internal `execute_commands`
function.

For example, if it is set to "refs/for", pushing to a reference such as
"refs/for/master" will not create or update reference "refs/for/master",
but may create or update a pull request directly by running the hook
"proc-receive".

Optional modifiers can be provided in the beginning of the value to
filter commands for specific actions: create (a), modify (m),
delete (d). A `!` can be included in the modifiers to negate the
reference prefix entry. E.g.:

git config --system --add receive.procReceiveRefs ad:refs/heads

Add a noop fetch negotiator. This is introduced to allow partial clones
to skip the unneeded negotiation step when fetching missing objects
using a "git fetch" subprocess. (The implementation of spawning a "git

be useful for end users, e.g. as a blunt fix for object corruption.

5b01a4e8ff upload-pack.c: introduce 'uploadpackfilter.tree.maxDepth'
In b79cf959b2 (upload-pack.c: allow banning certain object filter(s),
2020-02-26), we introduced functionality to disallow certain object
filters from being chosen from within 'git upload-pack'. Traditionally,
administrators use this functionality to disallow filters that are known
to perform slowly, for e.g., those that do not have bitmap-level
filtering.

In the past, the '--filter=tree:<n>' was one such filter that does not
have bitmap-level filtering support, and so was likely to be banned by
administrators.

However, in the previous couple of commits, we introduced bitmap-level
filtering for the case when 'n' is equal to '0', i.e., as if we had a
'--filter=tree:none' choice.

While it would be sufficient to simply write

  $ git config uploadpackfilter.tree.allow true

(since it would allow all values of 'n'), we would like to be able to
allow this filter for certain values of 'n', i.e., those no greater than
some pre-specified maximum.

In order to do this, introduce a new configuration key, as follows:

  $ git config uploadpackfilter.tree.maxDepth <m>

where '<m>' specifies the maximum allowed value of 'n' in the filter
'tree:n'. Administrators who wish to allow for only the value '0' can
write:

  $ git config uploadpackfilter.tree.allow true
  $ git config uploadpackfilter.tree.maxDepth 0

which allows '--filter=tree:0', but no other values.

6dd3456a8c upload-pack.c: allow banning certain object filter(s)
Git clients may ask the server for a partial set of objects, where the
set of objects being requested is refined by one or more object filters.
Server administrators can configure 'git upload-pack' to allow or ban
these filters by setting the 'uploadpack.allowFilter' variable to
'true' or 'false', respectively.

However, administrators using bitmaps may wish to allow certain kinds of
object filters, but ban others. Specifically, they may wish to allow
object filters that can be optimized by the use of bitmaps, while
rejecting other object filters which aren't and represent a perceived
performance degradation (as well as an increased load factor on the
server).

Allow configuring 'git upload-pack' to support object filters on a
case-by-case basis by introducing two new configuration variables:

  - 'uploadpackfilter.allow'
  - 'uploadpackfilter.<kind>.allow'

where '<kind>' may be one of 'blobNone', 'blobLimit', 'tree', and so on.

Setting the second configuration variable for any valid value of
'<kind>' explicitly allows or disallows restricting that kind of object
filter.

If a client requests the object filter <kind> and the respective
configuration value is not set, 'git upload-pack' will default to the
value of 'uploadpackfilter.allow', which itself defaults to 'true' to
maintain backwards compatibility. Note that this differs from
'uploadpack.allowfilter', which controls whether or not the 'filter'
capability is advertised.

6e6029a82a fmt-merge-msg: allow merge destination to be omitted again
In Git 2.28, we stopped special casing 'master' when producing the
default merge message by just removing the code to squelch "into
'master'" at the end of the message.

Introduce multi-valued merge.suppressDest configuration variable
that gives a set of globs to match against the name of the branch
into which the merge is being made, to let users specify for which
branch fmt-merge-msg's output should be shortened. When it is not
set, 'master' is used as the sole value of the variable by default.

The above move mostly reverts the pre-2.28 default in repositories
that have no relevant configuration.

Add a few tests to protect the behaviour with the new configuration
variable from future regression.

b5651a2092 experimental: default to fetch.writeCommitGraph=false
The fetch.writeCommitGraph feature makes fetches write out a commit
graph file for the newly downloaded pack on fetch. This improves the
performance of various commands that would perform a revision walk and
eventually ought to be the default for everyone. To prepare for that
future, it's enabled by default for users that set
feature.experimental=true to experience such future defaults.

Alas, for --unshallow fetches from a shallow clone it runs into a
snag: by the time Git has fetched the new objects and is writing a
commit graph, it has performed a revision walk and r->parsed_objects
contains information about the shallow boundary from *before* the
fetch. The commit graph writing code is careful to avoid writing a
commit graph file in shallow repositories, but the new state is not
shallow, and the result is that from that point on, commands like "git
log" make use of a newly written commit graph file representing a
fictional history with the old shallow boundary.

We could fix this by making the commit graph writing code more careful
to avoid writing a commit graph that could have used any grafts or
shallow state, but it is possible that there are other pieces of
mutated state that fetch's commit graph writing code may be relying
on. So disable it in the feature.experimental configuration.

Google developers have been running in this configuration (by setting
fetch.writeCommitGraph=false in the system config) to work around this
bug since it was discovered in April. Once the fix lands, we'll
enable fetch.writeCommitGraph=true again to give it some early testing
before rolling out to a wider audience.

In other words:

- this patch only affects behavior with feature.experimental=true

- it makes feature.experimental match the configuration Google has
been using for the last few months, meaning it would leave users in
a better tested state than without it

- this should improve testing for other features guarded by
feature.experimental, by making feature.experimental safer to use

3697caf4b9 config: let feature.experimental imply protocol.version=2
Git 2.26 used protocol v2 as its default protocol, but soon after
release, users noticed that the protocol v2 negotiation code was prone
to fail when fetching from some remotes that are far ahead of others
(such as linux-next.git versus Linus's linux.git). That has been
fixed by 0b07eecf6e (Merge branch 'jt/v2-fetch-nego-fix',
2020-05-01), but to be cautious, we are using protocol v0 as the
default in 2.27 to buy some time for any other unanticipated issues to
surface.

To that end, let's ensure that users requesting the bleeding edge
using the feature.experimental flag *do* get protocol v2. This way,
we can gain experience with a wider audience for the new protocol
version and be more confident when it is time to enable it by default
for all users in some future Git version.

Implementation note: this isn't with the rest of the
feature.experimental options in repo-settings.c because those are tied
to a repository object, whereas this code path is used for operations
like "git ls-remote" that do not require a repository.

a6be5e6764 log: add log.excludeDecoration config option
In 'git log', the --decorate-refs-exclude option appends a pattern
to a string_list. This list is used to prevent showing some refs
in the decoration output, or even by --simplify-by-decoration.

Users may want to use their refs space to store utility refs that
should not appear in the decoration output. For example, Scalar [1]
runs a background fetch but places the "new" refs inside the
refs/scalar/hidden/<remote>/* refspace instead of refs/<remote>/*
to avoid updating remote refs when the user is not looking. However,
these "hidden" refs appear during regular 'git log' queries.

A similar idea to use "hidden" refs is under consideration for core
Git [2].

Add the 'log.excludeDecoration' config option so users can exclude
some refs from decorations by default instead of needing to use
--decorate-refs-exclude manually. The config value is multi-valued
much like the command-line option. The documentation is careful to
point out that the config value can be overridden by the
--decorate-refs option, even though --decorate-refs-exclude would
always "win" over --decorate-refs.

Since the 'log.excludeDecoration' takes lower precedence to
--decorate-refs, and --decorate-refs-exclude takes higher
precedence, the struct decoration_filter needed another field.
This led also to new logic in load_ref_decorations() and
ref_filter_match().

There are several tests in t4202-log.sh that test the
--decorate-refs-(include|exclude) options, so these are extended.
Since the expected output is already stored as a file, most tests
could simply replace a "--decorate-refs-exclude" option with an
in-line config setting. Other tests involve the precedence of
the config option compared to command-line options and needed more
modification.

a03b55530a merge: teach --autostash option
In rebase, one can pass the `--autostash` option to cause the worktree
to be automatically stashed before continuing with the rebase. This
option is missing in merge, however.

Implement the `--autostash` option and corresponding `merge.autoStash`
option in merge which stashes before merging and then pops after.

This option is useful when a developer has some local changes on a topic
branch but they realize that their work depends on another branch.
Previously, they had to run something like

	git fetch ...
	git stash push
	git merge FETCH_HEAD
	git stash pop

but now, that is reduced to

	git fetch ...
	git merge --autostash FETCH_HEAD

When an autostash is generated, it is automatically reapplied to the
worktree only in three explicit situations:

	1. An incomplete merge is commit using `git commit`.
	2. A merge completes successfully.
	3. A merge is aborted using `git merge --abort`.

In all other situations where the merge state is removed using
remove_merge_branch_state() such as aborting a merge via
`git reset --hard`, the autostash is saved into the stash reflog
instead keeping the worktree clean.

3d3adaad91 trace2: teach Git to log environment variables
Via trace2, Git can already log interesting config parameters (see the
trace2_cmd_list_config() function). However, this can grant an
incomplete picture because many config parameters also allow overrides
via environment variables.

To allow for more complete logs, we add a new trace2_cmd_list_env_vars()
function and supporting implementation, modeled after the pre-existing
config param logging implementation.

de3a864114 config: set pack.useSparse=true by default
The pack.useSparse config option was introduced by 3d036eb0
(pack-objects: create pack.useSparse setting, 2019-01-19) and was
first available in v2.21.0. When enabled, the pack-objects process
during 'git push' will use a sparse tree walk when deciding which
trees and blobs to send to the remote. The algorithm was introduced
by d5d2e93 (revision: implement sparse algorithm, 2019-01-16) and
has been in production use by VFS for Git since around that time.
The features.experimental config option also enabled pack.useSparse,
so hopefully that has also increased exposure.

It is worth noting that pack.useSparse has a possibility of
sending more objects across a push, but requires a special
arrangement of exact _copies_ across directories. There is a test
in t5322-pack-objects-sparse.sh that demonstrates this possibility.
This test uses the --sparse option to "git pack-objects" but we
can make it implied by the config value to demonstrate that the
default value has changed.

While updating that test, I noticed that the documentation did not
include an option for --no-sparse, which is now more important than
it was before.

Since the downside is unlikely but the upside is significant, set
the default value of pack.useSparse to true. Remove it from the
set of options implied by features.experimental.

8a2cd3f512 stash: remove the stash.useBuiltin setting
Remove the stash.useBuiltin setting which was added as an escape hatch
to disable the builtin version of stash first released with Git 2.22.

Carrying the legacy version is a maintenance burden, and has in fact
become out of date failing a test since the 2.23 release, without
anyone noticing until now. So users would be getting a hint to fall
back to a potentially buggy version of the tool.

We used to shell out to git config to get the useBuiltin configuration
to avoid changing any global state before spawning legacy-stash.
However that is no longer necessary, so just use the 'git_config'
function to get the setting instead.

Similar to what we've done in d03ebd411c ("rebase: remove the
rebase.useBuiltin setting", 2019-03-18), where we remove the
corresponding setting for rebase, we leave the documentation in place,
so people can refer back to it when searching for it online, and so we
can refer to it in the commit message.

88238e02d5 http: add client cert support for HTTPS proxies
Git supports performing connections to HTTPS proxies, but we don't
support doing mutual authentication with them (through TLS).

Add the necessary options to be able to send a client certificate to
the HTTPS proxy.

A client certificate can provide an alternative way of authentication
instead of using 'ProxyAuthorization' or other more common methods of
authentication. Libcurl supports this functionality already, so changes
are somewhat minimal. The feature is guarded by the first available
libcurl version that supports these options.

4 configuration options are added and documented, cert, key, cert
password protected and CA info. The CA info should be used to specify a
different CA path to validate the HTTPS proxy cert.

10cdb9f38a rebase: rename the two primary rebase backends
Two related changes, with separate rationale for each:

Rename the 'interactive' backend to 'merge' because:
  * 'interactive' as a name caused confusion; this backend has been used
for many kinds of non-interactive rebases, and will probably be used
in the future for more non-interactive rebases than interactive ones
given that we are making it the default.
  * 'interactive' is not the underlying strategy; merging is.
  * the directory where state is stored is not called
    .git/rebase-interactive but .git/rebase-merge.

Rename the 'am' backend to 'apply' because:
  * Few users are familiar with git-am as a reference point.
  * Related to the above, the name 'am' makes sentences in the
documentation harder for users to read and comprehend (they may read
it as the verb from "I am"); avoiding this difficult places a large
burden on anyone writing documentation about this backend to be very
careful with quoting and sentence structure and often forces
annoying redundancy to try to avoid such problems.
  * Users stumble over pronunciation ("am" as in "I am a person not a
backend" or "am" as in "the first and thirteenth letters in the
alphabet in order are "A-M"); this may drive confusion when one user
tries to explain to another what they are doing.
  * While "am" is the tool driving this backend, the tool driving git-am
is git-apply, and since we are driving towards lower-level tools
for the naming of the merge backend we may as well do so here too.
  * The directory where state is stored has never been called
.git/rebase-am, it was always called .git/rebase-apply.

For all the reasons listed above:
  * Modify the documentation to refer to the backends with the new names
  * Provide a brief note in the documentation connecting the new names
to the old names in case users run across the old names anywhere
(e.g. in old release notes or older versions of the documentation)
  * Change the (new) --am command line flag to --apply
  * Rename some enums, variables, and functions to reinforce the new
backend names for us as well.

88f8576eda pull --rebase/remote rename: document and honor single-letter abbreviations rebase types
When 46af44b07d (pull --rebase=<type>: allow single-letter abbreviations
for the type, 2018-08-04) landed in Git, it had the side effect that
not only 'pull --rebase=<type>' accepted the single-letter abbreviations
but also the 'pull.rebase' and 'branch.<name>.rebase' configurations.

However, 'git remote rename' did not honor these single-letter
abbreviations when reading the 'branch.*.rebase' configurations.

We now document the single-letter abbreviations and both code places
share a common function to parse the values of 'git pull --rebase=*',
'pull.rebase', and 'branches.*.rebase'.

The only functional change is the handling of the `branch_info::rebase`
value. Before it was an unsigned enum, thus the truth value could be
checked with `branch_info::rebase != 0`. But `enum rebase_type` is
signed, thus the truth value must now be checked with
`branch_info::rebase >= REBASE_TRUE`

7a2dc95cbc docs: mention when increasing http.postBuffer is valuable
Users in a wide variety of situations find themselves with HTTP push
problems. Oftentimes these issues are due to antivirus software,
filtering proxies, or other man-in-the-middle situations; other times,
they are due to simple unreliability of the network.

However, a common solution to HTTP push problems found online is to
increase http.postBuffer. This works for none of the aforementioned
situations and is only useful in a small, highly restricted number of
cases: essentially, when the connection does not properly support
HTTP/1.1.

Document when raising this value is appropriate and what it actually
does, and discourage people from using it as a general solution for push

Document that the convention is that this variable represents some form

bc94e5862a doc: move author and committer information to git-commit(1)
While at one time it made perfect sense to store information about
configuring author and committer information in the documentation for
git commit-tree, in modern Git that operation is seldom used. Most
users will use git commit and expect to find comprehensive documentation
about its use in the manual page for that command.

Considering that there is significant confusion about how one is to use
the user.name and user.email variables, let's put as much documentation
as possible into an obvious place where users will be more likely to
find it.

In addition, expand the environment variables section to describe their
use more fully. Even though we now describe all of the options there
and in the configuration settings documentation, preserve the existing
text in git-commit.txt so that people can easily reason about the
ordering of the various options they can use. Explain the use of the

856249c62a docs: use "currently" for the present time
In many languages, the adverb with the root "actual" means "at the
present time." However, this usage is considered dated or even archaic
in English, and for referring to events occurring at the present time,
we usually prefer "currently" or "presently". "Actually" is commonly
used in modern English only for the meaning of "in fact" or to express a
contrast with what is expected.

Since the documentation refers to the available options at the present
time (that is, at the time of writing) instead of drawing a contrast,
let's switch to "currently," which both is commonly used and sounds less
formal than "presently."

54887b4689 gpg-interface: add minTrustLevel as a configuration option
Previously, signature verification for merge and pull operations checked
if the key had a trust-level of either TRUST_NEVER or TRUST_UNDEFINED in
verify_merge_signature(). If that was the case, the process die()d.

The other code paths that did signature verification relied entirely on
the return code from check_commit_signature(). And signatures made with
a good key, irregardless of its trust level, was considered valid by
check_commit_signature().

This difference in behavior might induce users to erroneously assume
that the trust level of a key in their keyring is always considered by
Git, even for operations where it is not (e.g. during a verify-commit or
verify-tag).

The way it worked was by gpg-interface.c storing the result from the
key/signature status *and* the lowest-two trust levels in the `result`
member of the signature_check structure (the last of these status lines
that were encountered got written to `result`). These are documented in
GPG under the subsection `General status codes` and `Key related`,
respectively [1].

The GPG documentation says the following on the TRUST_ status codes [1]:

    """
These are several similar status codes:

    - TRUST_UNDEFINED <error_token>
    - TRUST_NEVER <error_token>
    - TRUST_MARGINAL [0 [<validation_model>]]
    - TRUST_FULLY [0 [<validation_model>]]
    - TRUST_ULTIMATE [0 [<validation_model>]]

For good signatures one of these status lines are emitted to
indicate the validity of the key used to create the signature.
The error token values are currently only emitted by gpgsm.
    """

My interpretation is that the trust level is conceptionally different
from the validity of the key and/or signature. That seems to also have
been the assumption of the old code in check_signature() where a result
of 'G' (as in GOODSIG) and 'U' (as in TRUST_NEVER or TRUST_UNDEFINED)
were both considered a success.

The two cases where a result of 'U' had special meaning were in
verify_merge_signature() (where this caused git to die()) and in
format_commit_one() (where it affected the output of the %G? format
specifier).

I think it makes sense to refactor the processing of TRUST_ status lines
such that users can configure a minimum trust level that is enforced
globally, rather than have individual parts of git (e.g. merge) do it
themselves (except for a grace period with backward compatibility).

I also think it makes sense to not store the trust level in the same
struct member as the key/signature status. While the presence of a
TRUST_ status code does imply that the signature is good (see the first
paragraph in the included snippet above), as far as I can tell, the
order of the status lines from GPG isn't well-defined; thus it would
seem plausible that the trust level could be overwritten with the
key/signature status if they were stored in the same member of the
signature_check structure.

This patch introduces a new configuration option: gpg.minTrustLevel. It
consolidates trust-level verification to gpg-interface.c and adds a new
`trust_level` member to the signature_check structure.

Backward-compatibility is maintained by introducing a special case in
verify_merge_signature() such that if no user-configurable
gpg.minTrustLevel is set, then the old behavior of rejecting
TRUST_UNDEFINED and TRUST_NEVER is enforced. If, on the other hand,
gpg.minTrustLevel is set, then that value overrides the old behavior.

Similarly, the %G? format specifier will continue show 'U' for
signatures made with a key that has a trust level of TRUST_UNDEFINED or
TRUST_NEVER, even though the 'U' character no longer exist in the
`result` member of the signature_check structure. A new format
specifier, %GT, is also introduced for users that want to show all
possible trust levels for a signature.

Another approach would have been to simply drop the trust-level
requirement in verify_merge_signature(). This would also have made the
behavior consistent with other parts of git that perform signature
verification. However, requiring a minimum trust level for signing keys
does seem to have a real-world use-case. For example, the build system
used by the Qubes OS project currently parses the raw output from
verify-tag in order to assert a minimum trust level for keys used to
sign git tags [2].

684ceae32d fetch: default to protocol version 2
The Git users at $DAYJOB have been using protocol v2 as a default for
~1.5 years now and others have been also reporting good experiences
with it, so it seems like a good time to bump the default version. It
produces a significant performance improvement when fetching from
repositories with many refs, such as
https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src.

This only affects the client, not the server. (The server already
defaults to supporting protocol v2.) The protocol change is backward
compatible, so this should produce no significant effect when
contacting servers that only speak protocol v0.

4f3e57ef13 submodule--helper: advise on fatal alternate error
When recursively cloning a superproject with some shallow modules
defined in its .gitmodules, then recloning with "--reference=<path>", an
error occurs. For example:

  git clone --recurse-submodules --branch=master -j8 \
    https://android.googlesource.com/platform/superproject \
    master
  git clone --recurse-submodules --branch=master -j8 \
    https://android.googlesource.com/platform/superproject \

fails with:

10c64a0b3c Doc: explain submodule.alternateErrorStrategy
Commit 31224cbdc7 ("clone: recursive and reference option triggers
submodule alternates", 2016-08-17) taught Git to support the
configuration options "submodule.alternateLocation" and
"submodule.alternateErrorStrategy" on a superproject.

If "submodule.alternateLocation" is configured to "superproject" on a
superproject, whenever a submodule of that superproject is cloned, it
instead computes the analogous alternate path for that submodule from
$GIT_DIR/objects/info/alternates of the superproject, and references it.

The "submodule.alternateErrorStrategy" option determines what happens
if that alternate cannot be referenced. However, it is not clear that
the clone proceeds as if no alternate was specified when that option is
not set to "die" (as can be seen in the tests in 31224cbdc7). Therefore,
document it accordingly.

ac33519ddf mingw: restrict file handle inheritance only on Windows 7 and later
Turns out that it don't work so well on Vista, see
https://github.com/git-for-windows/git/issues/1742 for details.

According to https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/?p=8873, it
*should* work on Windows Vista and later.

But apparently there are issues on Windows Vista when pipes are
involved. Given that Windows Vista is past its end of life (official

this issue and just disable the file handle inheritance restriction on

Create a new Boolean config option, core.sparseCheckoutCone, to

f83dff60a7 Start to implement a built-in version of git add --interactive
Unlike previous conversions to C, where we started with a built-in
helper, we start this conversion by adding an interception in the
`run_add_interactive()` function when the new opt-in
`add.interactive.useBuiltin` config knob is turned on (or the
corresponding environment variable `GIT_TEST_ADD_I_USE_BUILTIN`), and
calling the new internal API function `run_add_i()` that is implemented
directly in libgit.a.

At this point, the built-in version of `git add -i` only states that it
cannot do anything yet. In subsequent patches/patch series, the
`run_add_i()` function will gain more and more functionality, until it
is feature complete. The whole arc of the conversion can be found in the
PRs #170-175 at https://github.com/gitgitgadget/git.

The "--helper approach" can unfortunately not be used here: on Windows
we face the very specific problem that a `system()` call in
Perl seems to close `stdin` in the parent process when the spawned
process consumes even one character from `stdin`. Which prevents us from
implementing the main loop in C and still trying to hand off to the Perl
script.

The very real downside of the approach we have to take here is that the
test suite won't pass with `GIT_TEST_ADD_I_USE_BUILTIN=true` until the
conversion is complete (the `--helper` approach would have let it pass,
even at each of the incremental conversion steps).

d54dea77db fetch: let --jobs=<n> parallelize --multiple, too
So far, `--jobs=<n>` only parallelizes submodule fetches/clones, not
`--multiple` fetches, which is unintuitive, given that the option's name
does not say anything about submodules in particular.

Let's change that. With this patch, also fetches from multiple remotes
are parallelized.

For backwards-compatibility (and to prepare for a use case where
submodule and multiple-remote fetches may need different parallelization
limits), the config setting `submodule.fetchJobs` still only controls
the submodule part of `git fetch`, while the newly-introduced setting
`fetch.parallel` controls both (but can be overridden for submodules

83e57b04e6 trace2: discard new traces if target directory has too many files
trace2 can write files into a target directory. With heavy usage, this
directory can fill up with files, causing difficulty for
trace-processing systems.

This patch adds a config option (trace2.maxFiles) to set a maximum
number of files that trace2 will write to a target directory. The
following behavior is enabled when the maxFiles is set to a positive
integer:
When trace2 would write a file to a target directory, first check
whether or not the traces should be discarded. Traces should be
  discarded if:
    * there is a sentinel file declaring that there are too many files
    * OR, the number of files exceeds trace2.maxFiles.
In the latter case, we create a sentinel file named git-trace2-discard
  to speed up future checks.

The assumption is that a separate trace-processing system is dealing
with the generated traces; once it processes and removes the sentinel
file, it should be safe to generate new trace files again.

The default value for trace2.maxFiles is zero, which disables the file
count check.

The config can also be overridden with a new environment variable:
GIT_TRACE2_MAX_FILES.

50f26bd035 fetch: add fetch.writeCommitGraph config setting
The commit-graph feature is now on by default, and is being
written during 'git gc' by default. Typically, Git only writes
a commit-graph when a 'git gc --auto' command passes the gc.auto
setting to actualy do work. This means that a commit-graph will
typically fall behind the commits that are being used every day.

To stay updated with the latest commits, add a step to 'git
fetch' to write a commit-graph after fetching new objects. The
fetch.writeCommitGraph config setting enables writing a split
commit-graph, so on average the cost of writing this file is
very small. Occasionally, the commit-graph chain will collapse
to a single level, and this could be slow for very large repos.

For additional use, adjust the default to be true when
feature.experimental is enabled.

Update the following config settings to take new defaults, and to
use the repo_settings struct if not already using them:

* 'pack.useSparse=true'

In the case of fetch.negotiationAlgorithm, the existing logic
would load the config option only when about to use the setting,
so had a die() statement on an unknown string value. This is
removed as now the config is parsed under prepare_repo_settings().
In general, this die() is probably misplaced and not valuable.

c6cc4c5afd repo-settings: create feature.manyFiles setting
The feature.manyFiles setting is suitable for repos with many
files in the working directory. By setting index.version=4 and
core.untrackedCache=true, commands such as 'git status' should
improve.

While adding this setting, modify the index version precedence
tests to check how this setting overrides the default for
index.version is unset.

31b1de6a09 commit-graph: turn on commit-graph by default
The commit-graph feature has seen a lot of activity in the past
year or so since it was introduced. The feature is a critical
performance enhancement for medium- to large-sized repos, and
does not significantly hurt small repos.

Change the defaults for core.commitGraph and gc.writeCommitGraph
to true so users benefit from this feature by default.

There are several places in the test suite where the environment
variable GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH is disabled to avoid reading a
commit-graph, if it exists. The config option overrides the
environment, so swap these. Some GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH assignments
remain, and those are to avoid writing a commit-graph when a new
commit is created.

24966cd982 doc: fix repeated words
Inspired by 21416f0a07 ("restore: fix typo in docs", 2019-08-03), I ran
"git grep -E '(\b[a-zA-Z]+) \1\b' -- Documentation/" to find other cases
where words were duplicated, e.g. "the the", and in most cases removed
one of the repeated words.

There were many false positives by this grep command, including
deliberate repeated words like "really really" or valid uses of "that
that" which I left alone, of course.

I also did not correct any of the legitimate, accidentally repeated
words in old RelNotes.

"Can not" suggests one has the option to not do something, whereas
"cannot" more strongly suggests something is disallowed or impossible.

Noticed "can not", mistakenly used instead of "cannot" in git help
glossary, then ran git grep 'can not' and found many other instances.
Only files in the Documentation folder were modified.

'Can not' also occurs in some source code comments and some test
assertion messages, and there is an error message and translation "can
not move directory into itself" which I may fix and submit separately
from the documentation change.

Also noticed and fixed "is does" in git help fetch, but there are no

cdbd70c437 fetch: add --[no-]show-forced-updates argument
After updating a set of remove refs during a 'git fetch', we walk the
commits in the new ref value and not in the old ref value to discover
if the update was a forced update. This results in two things happening
during the command:

 1. The line including the ref update has an additional "(forced-update)"
    marker at the end.

 2. The ref log for that remote branch includes a bit saying that update
    is a forced update.

For many situations, this forced-update message happens infrequently, or
is a small bit of information among many ref updates. Many users ignore
these messages, but the calculation required here slows down their fetches
significantly. Keep in mind that they do not have the opportunity to
calculate a commit-graph file containing the newly-fetched commits, so
these comparisons can be very slow.

Add a '--[no-]show-forced-updates' option that allows a user to skip this
calculation. The only permanent result is dropping the forced-update bit
in the reflog.

Include a new fetch.showForcedUpdates config setting that allows this
behavior without including the argument in every command. The config
setting is overridden by the command-line arguments.

e4b75d6a1d trace2: rename environment variables to GIT_TRACE2*
For an environment variable that is supposed to be set by users, the
GIT_TR2* env vars are just too unclear, inconsistent, and ugly.

Most of the established GIT_* environment variables don't use
abbreviations, and in case of the few that do (GIT_DIR,
GIT_COMMON_DIR, GIT_DIFF_OPTS) it's quite obvious what the
abbreviations (DIR and OPTS) stand for. But what does TR stand for?
Track, traditional, trailer, transaction, transfer, transformation,
transition, translation, transplant, transport, traversal, tree,
trigger, truncate, trust, or ...?!

The trace2 facility, as the '2' suffix in its name suggests, is
supposed to eventually supercede Git's original trace facility. It's
reasonable to expect that the corresponding environment variables
follow suit, and after the original GIT_TRACE variables they are
called GIT_TRACE2; there is no such thing is 'GIT_TR'.

All trace2-specific config variables are, very sensibly, in the
'trace2' section, not in 'tr2'.

OTOH, we don't gain anything at all by omitting the last three
characters of "trace" from the names of these environment variables.

So let's rename all GIT_TR2* environment variables to GIT_TRACE2*,
before they make their way into a stable release.

13cdf78094 format-patch: teach format.notes config option
In git-format-patch, notes can be appended with the `--notes` option.
However, this must be specified by the user on an

Teach git-format-patch the `format.notes` config option. Its value is a

"standard" can be used to specify the standard notes. This option is
overridable with the `--no-notes` option in case a user wishes not to

8934ac8c92 blame: add config options for the output of ignored or unblamable lines
When ignoring commits, the commit that is blamed might not be
responsible for the change, due to the inaccuracy of our heuristic.
Users might want to know when a particular line has a potentially
inaccurate blame.

Furthermore, guess_line_blames() may fail to find any parent commit for
a given line touched by an ignored commit. Those 'unblamable' lines
remain blamed on an ignored commit. Users might want to know if a line
is unblamable so that they do not spend time investigating a commit they
know is uninteresting.

This patch adds two config options to mark these two types of lines in
the output of blame.

The first option can identify ignored lines by specifying
blame.markIgnoredLines. When this option is set, each blame line that
was blamed on a commit other than the ignored commit is marked with a
'?'.

For example:
	278b6158d6fdb (Barret Rhoden 2016-04-11 13:57:54 -0400 26)
appears as:
	?278b6158d6fd (Barret Rhoden 2016-04-11 13:57:54 -0400 26)

where the '?' is placed before the commit, and the hash has one fewer
characters.

Sometimes we are unable to even guess at what ancestor commit touched a
line. These lines are 'unblamable.' The second option,
blame.markUnblamableLines, will mark the line with '*'.

For example, say we ignore e5e8d36d04cbe, yet we are unable to blame
this line on another commit:
	e5e8d36d04cbe (Barret Rhoden 2016-04-11 13:57:54 -0400 26)
appears as:
	*e5e8d36d04cb (Barret Rhoden 2016-04-11 13:57:54 -0400 26)

When these config options are used together, every line touched by an
ignored commit will be marked with either a '?' or a '*'.

ae3f36dea1 blame: add the ability to ignore commits and their changes
Commits that make formatting changes or function renames are often not
interesting when blaming a file. A user may deem such a commit as 'not
interesting' and want to ignore and its changes it when assigning blame.

For example, say a file has the following git history / rev-list:

---O---A---X---B---C---D---Y---E---F

Commits X and Y both touch a particular line, and the other commits do
not:

X: "Take a third parameter"
-MyFunc(1, 2);
+MyFunc(1, 2, 3);

Y: "Remove camelcase"
-MyFunc(1, 2, 3);
+my_func(1, 2, 3);

git-blame will blame Y for the change. I'd like to be able to ignore Y:
both the existence of the commit as well as any changes it made. This
differs from -S rev-list, which specifies the list of commits to
process for the blame. We would still process Y, but just don't let the
blame 'stick.'

This patch adds the ability for users to ignore a revision with
--ignore-rev=rev, which may be repeated. They can specify a set of
files of full object names of revs, e.g. SHA-1 hashes, one per line. A
single file may be specified with the blame.ignoreRevFile config option
or with --ignore-rev-file=file. Both the config option and the command
line option may be repeated multiple times. An empty file name "" will
clear the list of revs from previously processed files. Config options
are processed before command line options.

For a typical use case, projects will maintain the file containing
revisions for commits that perform mass reformatting, and their users
have the option to ignore all of the commits in that file.

Additionally, a user can use the --ignore-rev option for one-off
investigation. To go back to the example above, X was a substantive
change to the function, but not the change the user is interested in.
The user inspected X, but wanted to find the previous change to that
line - perhaps a commit that introduced that function call.

To make this work, we can't simply remove all ignored commits from the
rev-list. We need to diff the changes introduced by Y so that we can
ignore them. We let the blames get passed to Y, just like when
processing normally. When Y is the target, we make sure that Y does not
*keep* any blames. Any changes that Y is responsible for get passed to
its parent. Note we make one pass through all of the scapegoats
(parents) to attempt to pass blame normally; we don't know if we *need*
to ignore the commit until we've checked all of the parents.

The blame_entry will get passed up the tree until we find a commit that
has a diff chunk that affects those lines.

One issue is that the ignored commit *did* make some change, and there is
no general solution to finding the line in the parent commit that
corresponds to a given line in the ignored commit. That makes it hard
to attribute a particular line within an ignored commit's diff
correctly.

For example, the parent of an ignored commit has this, say at line 11:

commit-a 11) #include "a.h"
commit-b 12) #include "b.h"

Commit X, which we will ignore, swaps these lines:

commit-X 11) #include "b.h"
commit-X 12) #include "a.h"

We can pass that blame entry to the parent, but line 11 will be
attributed to commit A, even though "include b.h" came from commit B.
The blame mechanism will be looking at the parent's view of the file at
line number 11.

ignore_blame_entry() is set up to allow alternative algorithms for
guessing per-line blames. Any line that is not attributed to the parent
will continue to be blamed on the ignored commit as if that commit was
not ignored. Upcoming patches have the ability to detect these lines
and mark them in the blame output.

The existing algorithm is simple: blame each line on the corresponding
line in the parent's diff chunk. Any lines beyond that stay with the
target.

For example, the parent of an ignored commit has this, say at line 11:

commit-a 11) void new_func_1(void *x, void *y);
commit-b 12) void new_func_2(void *x, void *y);
commit-c 13) some_line_c
commit-d 14) some_line_d

After a commit 'X', we have:

commit-X 11) void new_func_1(void *x,
commit-X 12)                 void *y);
commit-X 13) void new_func_2(void *x,
commit-X 14)                 void *y);
commit-c 15) some_line_c
commit-d 16) some_line_d

Commit X nets two additionally lines: 13 and 14. The current
guess_line_blames() algorithm will not attribute these to the parent,
whose diff chunk is only two lines - not four.

When we ignore with the current algorithm, we get:

commit-a 11) void new_func_1(void *x,
commit-b 12)                 void *y);
commit-X 13) void new_func_2(void *x,
commit-X 14)                 void *y);
commit-c 15) some_line_c
commit-d 16) some_line_d

Note that line 12 was blamed on B, though B was the commit for
new_func_2(), not new_func_1().  Even when guess_line_blames() finds a
line in the parent, it may still be incorrect.

46e91b663b checkout: split part of it to new command 'restore'
Previously the switching branch business of 'git checkout' becomes a
new command 'switch'. This adds the restore command for the checking
out paths path.

Similar to git-switch, a new man page is added to describe what the
command will become. The implementation will be updated shortly to
match the man page.

A couple main differences from 'git checkout <paths>':

- 'restore' by default will only update worktree. This matters more
when --source is specified ('checkout <tree> <paths>' updates both
  worktree and index).

- 'restore --staged' can be used to restore the index. This command
  overlaps with 'git reset <paths>'.

- both worktree and index could also be restored at the same time
(from a tree) when both --staged and --worktree are specified. This
overlaps with 'git checkout <tree> <paths>'

- default source for restoring worktree and index is the index and
HEAD respectively. A different (tree) source could be specified as
  with --source (*).

- when both index and worktree are restored, --source must be
specified since the default source for these two individual targets
  are different (**)

- --no-overlay is enabled by default, if an entry is missing in the
source, restoring means deleting the entry

(*) I originally went with --from instead of --source. I still think
--from is a better name. The short option -f however is already
taken by force. And I do think short option is good to have, e.g. to
  write -s@ or -s@^ instead of --source=HEAD.

(**) If you sit down and think about it, moving worktree's source from
the index to HEAD makes sense, but nobody is really thinking it
through when they type the commands.

eea9c1e78f tag: advise on nested tags
Robert Dailey reported confusion on the mailing list about a nested
tag which was most likely created by mistake. Jeff King noted that
this isn't a very common case and creating a tag-to-a-tag can be a
user-error.

Suggest that it may be a mistake with an advice message when
creating such a tag. Those who do want to create a tag that point
at another tag regularly can turn it off with the usual advice
mechanism.

080a4480a0 gc docs: note how --aggressive impacts --window & --depth
Since 07e7dbf0db (gc: default aggressive depth to 50, 2016-08-11) we
somewhat confusingly use the same depth under --aggressive as we do by
default.

As noted in that commit that makes sense, it was wrong to make more
depth the default for "aggressive", and thus save disk space at the
expense of runtime performance, which is usually the opposite of
someone who'd like "aggressive gc" wants.

But that's left us with a mostly-redundant configuration variable, so
let's clearly note in its documentation that it doesn't change the
default.

8c8e5bd6eb merge-recursive: switch directory rename detection default
When all of x/a, x/b, and x/c have moved to z/a, z/b, and z/c on one
branch, there is a question about whether x/d added on a different
branch should remain at x/d or appear at z/d when the two branches are
merged. There are different possible viewpoints here:

  A) The file was placed at x/d; it's unrelated to the other files in
x/ so it doesn't matter that all the files from x/ moved to z/ on
one branch; x/d should still remain at x/d.

  B) x/d is related to the other files in x/, and x/ was renamed to z/;
therefore x/d should be moved to z/d.

Since there was no ability to detect directory renames prior to
git-2.18, users experienced (A) regardless of context. Choice (B) was
implemented in git-2.18, with no option to go back to (A), and has been
in use since. However, one user reported that the merge results did not
match their expectations, making the change of default problematic,
especially since there was no notice printed when directory rename
detection moved files.

Note that there is also a third possibility here:

  C) There are different answers depending on the context and content
that cannot be determined by git, so this is a conflict. Use a
higher stage in the index to record the conflict and notify the
user of the potential issue instead of silently selecting a
     resolution for them.

Add an option for users to specify their preference for whether to use
directory rename detection, and default to (C). Even when directory
rename detection is on, add notice messages about files moved into new
directories.

As a sidenote, x/d did not have to be a new file here; it could have
already existed at some other path and been renamed to x/d, with
directory rename detection just renaming it again to z/d. Thus, it's
not just new files, but also a modification to all rename types (normal
renames, rename/add, rename/delete, rename/rename(1to1),
rename/rename(1to2), and rename/rename(2to1)).

65f099b398 switch: no worktree status unless real branch switch happens
When we switch from one branch to another, it makes sense to show a
summary of local changes since there could be conflicts, or some files
left modified.... When switch is used solely for creating a new
branch (and "switch" to the same commit) or detaching, we don't really
need to show anything.

"git checkout" does it anyway for historical reasons. But we can start
with a clean slate with switch and don't have to.

This essentially reverts fa655d8411 (checkout: optimize "git checkout
-b <new_branch>" - 2018-08-16) and make it default for switch,
but also for -B and --detach. Users of big repos are encouraged to

d787d311db checkout: split part of it to new command 'switch'
"git checkout" doing too many things is a source of confusion for many
users (and it even bites old timers sometimes). To remedy that, the
command will be split into two new ones: switch and restore. The good
old "git checkout" command is still here and will be until all (or most
of users) are sick of it.

See the new man page for the final design of switch. The actual
implementation though is still pretty much the same as "git checkout"
and not completely aligned with the man page. Following patches will
adjust their behavior to match the man page.

d03ebd411c rebase: remove the rebase.useBuiltin setting
Remove the rebase.useBuiltin setting, which was added as an escape
hatch to disable the builtin version of rebase first released with Git
2.20.

See [1] for the initial implementation of rebase.useBuiltin, and [2]
and [3] for the documentation and corresponding
GIT_TEST_REBASE_USE_BUILTIN option.

Carrying the legacy version is a maintenance burden as seen in
7e097e27d3 ("legacy-rebase: backport -C<n> and --whitespace=<option>
checks", 2018-11-20) and 9aea5e9286 ("rebase: fix regression in
rebase.useBuiltin=false test mode", 2019-02-13). Since the built-in
version has been shown to be stable enough let's remove the legacy
version.

As noted in [3] having use_builtin_rebase() shell out to get its
config doesn't make any sense anymore, that was done for the purposes
of spawning the legacy rebase without having modified any global
state. Let's instead handle this case in rebase_config().

There's still a bunch of references to git-legacy-rebase in po/*.po,
but those will be dealt with in time by the i18n effort.

Even though this configuration variable only existed two releases
let's not entirely delete the entry from the docs, but note its
absence. Individual versions of git tend to be around for a while due
to distro packaging timelines, so e.g. if we're "lucky" a given
version like 2.21 might be installed on say OSX for half a decade.

That'll mean some people probably setting this in config, and then
when they later wonder if it's needed they can Google search the
config option name or check it in git-config. It also allows us to
refer to the docs from the warning for details.

d4316604f8 pack-objects: default to writing bitmap hash-cache
Enabling pack.writebitmaphashcache should always be a performance win.
It costs only 4 bytes per object on disk, and the timings in ae4f07fbcc
(pack-bitmap: implement optional name_hash cache, 2013-12-21) show it
improving fetch and partial-bitmap clone times by 40-50%.

The only reason we didn't enable it by default at the time is that early
versions of JGit's bitmap reader complained about the presence of
optional header bits it didn't understand. But that was changed in
JGit's d2fa3987a (Use bitcheck to check for presence of OPT_FULL option,
2013-10-30), which made it into JGit v3.5.0 in late 2014.

So let's turn this option on by default. It's backwards-compatible with
all versions of Git, and if you are also using JGit on the same
repository, you'd only run into problems using a version that's almost 5
years old.

We'll drop the manual setting from all of our test scripts, including
perf tests. This isn't strictly necessary, but it has two advantages:

  1. If the hash-cache ever stops being enabled by default, our perf
     regression tests will notice.

  2. We can use the modified perf tests to show off the behavior of an
otherwise unconfigured repo, as shown below.

These are the results of a few of a perf tests against linux.git that
showed interesting results. You can see the expected speedup in 5310.4,
which was noted in ae4f07fbcc. Curiously, 5310.8 did not improve (and
actually got slower), despite seeing the opposite in ae4f07fbcc.
I don't have an explanation for that.

The tests from p5311 did not exist back then, but do show improvements
(a smaller pack due to better deltas, which we found in less time).

  Test HEAD^ HEAD

39ab4d0951 config: allow giving separate author and committer idents
The author.email, author.name, committer.email and committer.name
settings are analogous to the GIT_AUTHOR_* and GIT_COMMITTER_*
environment variables, but for the git config system. This allows them
to be set separately for each repository.

Git supports setting different authorship and committer
information with environment variables. However, environment variables
are set in the shell, so if different authorship and committer
information is needed for different repositories an external tool is
required.

This adds support to git config for author.email, author.name,
committer.email and committer.name settings so this information
can be set per repository.

Also, it generalizes the fmt_ident function so it can handle author vs
committer identification.

c9446f0504 docs/config: clarify "text property" in core.eol
The word "property" is vague here. Let's spell out that we mean the path
must be marked with the text attribute.

While we're here, let's make the paragraph a little easier to read by
de-emphasizing the "when core.autocrlf is false" bit. Putting it in the
first sentence obscures the main content, and many readers won't care
about autocrlf (i.e., anyone who is just following the gitattributes(7)
advice, which mainly discusses "text" and "core.eol").

3d036eb0d2 pack-objects: create pack.useSparse setting
The '--sparse' flag in 'git pack-objects' changes the algorithm
used to enumerate objects to one that is faster for individual
users pushing new objects that change only a small cone of the
working directory. The sparse algorithm is not recommended for a
server, which likely sends new objects that appear across the
entire working directory.

Create a 'pack.useSparse' setting that enables this new algorithm.
This allows 'git push' to use this algorithm without passing a
'--sparse' flag all the way through four levels of run_command()
calls.

If the '--no-sparse' flag is set, then this config setting is
overridden.

b4583d5595 doc/config: do a better job of introducing 'worktree.guessRemote'
The documentation for this option jumps right in with "With `add`",
without explaining that `add` is a sub-command of "git worktree".
Together with rather odd grammatical structure of the remainder of the
sentence, the description can be difficult for newcomers to understand.
Clarify by improving the grammar and mentioning "git worktree add"
explicitly.

969de3ff0e rebase: add a config option to default to --reschedule-failed-exec
It would be cumbersome to type out that option all the time, so let's
offer the convenience of a config setting: rebase.rescheduleFailedExec.

Besides, this opens the door to changing the default in a future version
of Git: it does make some sense to reschedule failed `exec` commands by
default (and if we could go back in time when the `exec` command was
invented, we probably would change that default right from the start).

2a9dedef2e index: make index.threads=true enable ieot and eoie
If a user explicitly sets

	[index]
		threads = true

to read the index using multiple threads, ensure that index writes
include the offset table by default to make that possible. This
ensures that the user's intent of turning on threading is respected.

In other words, permit the following configurations:

- index.threads and index.recordOffsetTable unspecified: do not write
the offset table yet (to avoid alarming the user with "ignoring IEOT
extension" messages when an older version of Git accesses the
repository) but do make use of multiple threads to read the index if
the supporting offset table is present.

This can also be requested explicitly by setting index.threads=true,
  0, or >1 and index.recordOffsetTable=false.

- index.threads=false or 1: do not write the offset table, and do not
make use of the offset table.

One can set index.recordOffsetTable=false as well, to be more
  explicit.

- index.threads=true, 0, or >1 and index.recordOffsetTable unspecified:
write the offset table and make use of threads at read time.

This can also be requested by setting index.threads=true, 0, >1, or
  unspecified and index.recordOffsetTable=true.

Fortunately the complication is temporary: once most Git installations
have upgraded to a version with support for the IEOT and EOIE
extensions, we can flip the defaults for index.recordEndOfIndexEntries
and index.recordOffsetTable to true and eliminate the settings.

429160544d ieot: default to not writing IEOT section
As with EOIE, popular versions of Git do not support the new IEOT
extension yet. When accessing a Git repository written by a more
modern version of Git, they correctly ignore the unrecognized section,
but in the process they loudly warn

	ignoring IEOT extension

resulting in confusion for users. Introduce the index extension more
gently by not writing it yet in this first version with support for
it. Soon, once sufficiently many users are running a modern version
of Git, we can flip the default so users benefit from this index
extension by default.

Introduce a '[index] recordOffsetTable' configuration variable to
control whether the new index extension is written.

d8465500c3 eoie: default to not writing EOIE section
Since 3b1d9e04 (eoie: add End of Index Entry (EOIE) extension,
2018-10-10) Git defaults to writing the new EOIE section when writing
out an index file. Usually that is a good thing because it improves
threaded performance, but when a Git repository is shared with older
versions of Git, it produces a confusing warning:

  $ git status
  ignoring EOIE extension
  HEAD detached at 371ed0defa
nothing to commit, working tree clean

Let's introduce the new index extension more gently. First we'll roll
out the new version of Git that understands it, and then once
sufficiently many users are using such a version, we can flip the
default to writing it by default.

Introduce a '[index] recordEndOfIndexEntries' configuration variable
to allow interested users to benefit from this index extension early.

The rebase.useBuiltin variable introduced in 55071ea248 ("rebase:

default in 5541bd5b8f ("rebase: default to using the builtin rebase",
2018-08-08), but had no documentation.

Let's document it so that users who run into any stability issues with
the C rewrite know there's an escape hatch[1], and make it clear that
needing to turn off builtin rebase means you've found a bug in git.

dd8dd300c6 push: add an advice on unqualified <dst> push
Add an advice to the recently improved error message added in
f8aae12034 ("push: allow unqualified dest refspecs to DWIM",
2008-04-23).

Now with advice.pushUnqualifiedRefName=true (on by default) we show a
hint about how to proceed:

    $ ./git-push avar v2.19.0^{commit}:newbranch -n
error: The destination you provided is not a full refname (i.e.,
starting with "refs/"). We tried to guess what you meant by:

    - Looking for a ref that matches 'newbranch' on the remote side.
    - Checking if the <src> being pushed ('v2.19.0^{commit}')
is a ref in "refs/{heads,tags}/". If so we add a corresponding
refs/{heads,tags}/ prefix on the remote side.

Neither worked, so we gave up. You must fully qualify the ref.
hint: The <src> part of the refspec is a commit object.
hint: Did you mean to create a new branch by pushing to
    hint: 'v2.19.0^{commit}:refs/heads/newbranch'?
error: failed to push some refs to 'git@github.com:avar/git.git'

When trying to push a tag, tree or a blob we suggest that perhaps the
user meant to push them to refs/tags/ instead.

The if/else duplication for all of OBJ_{COMMIT,TAG,TREE,BLOB} is
unfortunate, but is required to correctly mark the messages for
translation. See the discussion in
