6a7895fd8a commit: prepare free_commit_buffer and release_commit_memory for any repo
Pass the object pool to free_commit_buffer and release_commit_memory,
such that we can eliminate access to 'the_repository'.

Also remove the TODO in release_commit_memory, as commit->util was
removed in 9d2c97016f (commit.h: delete 'util' field in struct commit,

bbcde41a70 revision.c: put promisor option in specialized struct
Put the allow_exclude_promisor_objects flag in setup_revision_opt. When
it was in rev_info, it was unclear when it was used, since rev_info is
passed to functions that don't use the flag. This resulted in
unnecessary setting of the flag in prune.c, so fix that as well.

Operations on promisor objects make sense in the context of only a
small subset of the commands that internally use the revisions
machinery, but the "--exclude-promisor-objects" option were taken
and led to nonsense results by commands like "log", to which it
didn't make much sense.  This has been corrected.

669b1d2aae exclude-promisor-objects: declare when option is allowed
The --exclude-promisor-objects option causes some funny behavior in at
least two commands: log and blame. It causes a BUG crash:

	$ git log --exclude-promisor-objects
	BUG: revision.c:2143: exclude_promisor_objects can only be used
	when fetch_if_missing is 0
	Aborted
	[134]

Fix this such that the option is treated like any other unknown option.
The commands that must support it are limited, so declare in those
commands that the flag is supported. In particular:

	pack-objects
	prune
	rev-list

The commands were found by searching for logic which parses
--exclude-promisor-objects outside of revision.c. Extra logic outside of
revision.c is needed because fetch_if_missing must be turned on before
revision.c sees the option or it will BUG-crash. The above list is
supported by the fact that no other command is introspectively invoked
by another command passing --exclude-promisor-object.

7c0fe330d5 rev-list: handle missing tree objects properly
Previously, we assumed only blob objects could be missing. This patch
makes rev-list handle missing trees like missing blobs. The --missing=*
and --exclude-promisor-objects flags now work for trees as they already
do for blobs. This is demonstrated in t6112.

a12cbe23ef rev-list: make empty --stdin not an error
When we originally did the series that contains 7ba826290a
(revision: add rev_input_given flag, 2017-08-02) the intent
was that "git rev-list --stdin </dev/null" would similarly
become a successful noop. However, an attempt at the time to
do that did not work[1]. The problem is that rev_input_given
serves two roles:

 - it tells rev-list.c that it should not error out

 - it tells revision.c that it should not have the "default"
   ref kick (e.g., "HEAD" in "git log")

We want to trigger the former, but not the latter. This is
technically possible with a single flag, if we set the flag
only after revision.c's revs->def check. But this introduces
a rather subtle ordering dependency.

Instead, let's keep two flags: one to denote when we got
actual input (which triggers both roles) and one for when we
read stdin (which triggers only the first).

This does mean a caller interested in the first role has to
check both flags, but there's only one such caller. And any
future callers might want to make the distinction anyway
(e.g., if they care less about erroring out, and more about
whether revision.c soaked up our stdin).

In fact, we already keep such a flag internally in
revision.c for this purpose, so this is really just exposing
that to the caller (and the old function-local flag can go
away in favor of our new one).

109cd76dd3 object: add repository argument to parse_object
Add a repository argument to allow the callers of parse_object
to be more specific about which repository to act on. This is a small
mechanical change; it doesn't change the implementation to handle
repositories other than the_repository yet.

As with the previous commits, use a macro to catch callers passing a
repository other than the_repository at compile time.

f3c23db2d7 pack-bitmap: add free function
Add a function to free struct bitmap_index instances, and use it where
needed (except when rebuild_existing_bitmaps() is used, since it creates
references to the bitmaps within the struct bitmap_index passed to it).

Note that the hashes field in struct bitmap_index is not freed because
it points to another field within the same struct. The documentation for
that field has been updated to clarify that.

3ae5fa0768 pack-bitmap: remove bitmap_git global variable
Remove the bitmap_git global variable. Instead, generate on demand an
instance of struct bitmap_index for code that needs to access it.

This allows us significant control over the lifetime of instances of
struct bitmap_index. In particular, packs can now be closed without
worrying if an unnecessarily long-lived "pack" field in struct
bitmap_index still points to it.

The bitmap API is also clearer in that we need to first obtain a struct
bitmap_index, then we use it.

This patch raises two potential issues: (1) memory for the struct
bitmap_index is allocated without being freed, and (2)
prepare_bitmap_git() and prepare_bitmap_walk() can reuse a previously
loaded bitmap. For (1), this will be dealt with in a subsequent patch in
this patch set that also deals with freeing the contents of the struct
bitmap_index (which were not freed previously, because they have global
scope). For (2), current bitmap users only load the bitmap once at most
(note that pack-objects can use bitmaps or write bitmaps, but not both
at the same time), so support for reuse has no effect - and future users
can pass around the struct bitmap_index * obtained if they need to do 2
or more things with the same bitmap.

cbd53a2193 object-store: move object access functions to object-store.h
This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less
overwhelming to read.

In particular, this moves:
- read_object_file
- oid_object_info
- write_object_file

As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h.
In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to
compile otherwise.  It would be better to #include wherever
identifiers from the header are used.  That can happen later
when we have better tooling for it.

156e1782a8 -Wuninitialized: remove some 'init-self' workarounds
The 'self-initialised' variables construct (ie <type> var = var;) has
been used to silence gcc '-W[maybe-]uninitialized' warnings. This has,
unfortunately, caused MSVC to issue 'uninitialized variable' warnings.
Also, using clang static analysis causes complaints about an 'Assigned
value is garbage or undefined'.

There are six such constructs in the current codebase. Only one of the
six causes gcc to issue a '-Wmaybe-uninitialized' warning (which will
be addressed elsewhere). The remaining five 'init-self' gcc workarounds
are noted below, along with the commit which introduced them:

  1. builtin/rev-list.c: 'reaches' and 'all', see commit 457f08a030
     ("git-rev-list: add --bisect-vars option.", 2007-03-21).

  2. merge-recursive.c:2064 'mrtree', see commit f120ae2a8e ("merge-
     recursive.c: mrtree in merge() is not used before set", 2007-10-29).

  3. fast-import.c:3023 'oe', see commit 85c62395b1 ("fast-import: let
     importers retrieve blobs", 2010-11-28).

  4. fast-import.c:3006 'oe', see commit 28c7b1f7b7 ("fast-import: add a
     get-mark command", 2015-07-01).

Remove the 'self-initialised' variable constructs noted above.

7fa31b645f commit: drop uses of get_cached_commit_buffer()
The "--show-all" revision option shows UNINTERESTING
commits. Some of these commits may be unparsed when we try
to show them (since we may or may not need to walk their
parents to fulfill the request).

Commit 3131b71301 (Add "--show-all" revision walker flag for
debugging, 2008-02-09) resolved this by just skipping
pretty-printing for commits without their object contents
cached, saying:

  Because we now end up listing commits we may not even have been parsed
  at all "show_log" and "show_commit" need to protect against commits
  that don't have a commit buffer entry.

That was the easy fix to avoid the pretty-printer segfaulting,
but:

  1. It doesn't work for all formats. E.g., --oneline
     prints the oid for each such commit but not a trailing
     newline, leading to jumbled output.

  2. It only affects some commits, depending on whether we
     happened to parse them or not (so if they were at the
     tip of an UNINTERESTING starting point, or if we
     happened to traverse over them, you'd see more data).

  3. It unncessarily ties the decision to show the verbose
     header to whether the commit buffer was cached. That
     makes it harder to change the logic around caching
     (e.g., if we could traverse without actually loading
     the full commit objects).

These days it's safe to feed such a commit to the
pretty-print code. Since be5c9fb904 (logmsg_reencode: lazily
load missing commit buffers, 2013-01-26), we'll load it on
demand in such a case. So let's just always show the verbose
headers.

This does change the behavior of plumbing, but:

  a. The --show-all option was explicitly introduced as a
     debugging aid, and was never documented (and has rarely
     even been mentioned on the list by git devs).

  b. Avoiding the commits was already not deterministic due
     to (2) above. So the caller might have seen full
     headers for these commits anyway, and would need to be
     prepared for it.

df11e19648 rev-list: support termination at promisor objects
Teach rev-list to support termination of an object traversal at any
object from a promisor remote (whether one that the local repo also has,
or one that the local repo knows about because it has another promisor
object that references it).

This will be used subsequently in gc and in the connectivity check used
by fetch.

For efficiency, if an object is referenced by a promisor object, and is
in the local repo only as a non-promisor object, object traversal will
not stop there. This is to avoid building the list of promisor object
references.

(In list-objects.c, the case where obj is NULL in process_blob() and
process_tree() do not need to be changed because those happen only when
there is a conflict between the expected type and the existing object.
If the object doesn't exist, an object will be synthesized, which is
fine.)

caf3827e2f rev-list: add list-objects filtering support
Teach rev-list to use the filtering provided by the
traverse_commit_list_filtered() interface to omit
unwanted objects from the result.

Object filtering is only allowed when one of the "--objects*"
options are used.

When the "--filter-print-omitted" option is used, the omitted
objects are printed at the end.  These are marked with a "~".
This option can be combined with "--quiet" to get a list of
just the omitted objects.

Add t6112 test.

In the future, we will introduce a "partial clone" mechanism
wherein an object in a repo, obtained from a remote, may
reference a missing object that can be dynamically fetched from
that remote once needed.  This "partial clone" mechanism will
have a way, sometimes slow, of determining if a missing link
is one of the links expected to be produced by this mechanism.

This patch introduces handling of missing objects to help
debugging and development of the "partial clone" mechanism,
and once the mechanism is implemented, for a power user to
perform operations that are missing-object aware without
incurring the cost of checking if a missing link is expected.

24d707f636 bisect: change calling-convention of find_bisection()
This function takes a commit list and returns a commit list. The
returned list is built by modifying the original list. Thus the caller
should not use the original list again (and after the next commit fixes
a memory leak, it must not).

Change the function signature so that it takes a **list and has void
return type. That should make it harder to misuse this function.

While we're here, document this function.

We used to expose the full power of the delayed progress API to the
callers, so that they can specify, not just the message to show and
expected total amount of work that is used to compute the percentage
of work performed so far, the percent-threshold parameter P and the
delay-seconds parameter N.  The progress meter starts to show at N
seconds into the operation only if we have not yet completed P per-cent
of the total work.

Most callers used either (0%, 2s) or (50%, 1s) as (P, N), but there
are oddballs that chose more random-looking values like 95%.

For a smoother workload, (50%, 1s) would allow us to start showing
the progress meter earlier than (0%, 2s), while keeping the chance
of not showing progress meter for long running operation the same as
the latter.  For a task that would take 2s or more to complete, it
is likely that less than half of it would complete within the first
second, if the workload is smooth.  But for a spiky workload whose
earlier part is easier, such a setting is likely to fail to show the
progress meter entirely and (0%, 2s) is more appropriate.

But that is merely a theory.  Realistically, it is of dubious value
to ask each codepath to carefully consider smoothness of their
workload and specify their own setting by passing two extra
parameters.  Let's simplify the API by dropping both parameters and
have everybody use (0%, 2s).

Oh, by the way, the percent-threshold parameter and the structure
member were consistently misspelled, which also is now fixed ;-)

d75dfb1089 rev-list: pass diffopt->use_colors through to pretty-print
When rev-list pretty-prints a commit, it creates a new
pretty_print_context and copies items from the rev_info
struct. We don't currently copy the "use_color" field,
though. Nobody seems to have noticed because the only part
of pretty.c that cares is the %C(auto,...) placeholder, and
presumably not many people use that with the rev-list
plumbing (as opposed to with git-log).

It will become more noticeable in a future patch, though,
when we start treating all user-format colors as auto-colors
(in which case it would become impossible to format colors
with rev-list, even with --color=always).

7f97de5ee1 rev-list: check reflog_info before showing usage
When git-rev-list sees no pending commits, it shows a usage
message. This works even when reflog-walking is requested,
because the reflog-walk code currently puts the reflog tips
into the pending queue.

In preparation for refactoring the reflog-walk code, let's
explicitly check whether we have any reflogs to walk. For
now this is a noop, but the existing reflog tests will make
sure that it kicks in after the refactoring. Likewise, we'll
add a test that "rev-list -g" without specifying any reflogs
continues to fail (so that we know our check does not kick
in too aggressively).

Note that the implementation needs to go into its own
sub-function, as the walk code does not expose its innards
outside of reflog-walk.c.

5a88f97cff diff- and log- family: handle "git cmd -h" early
"git $builtin -h" bypasses the usual repository setup and calls the
cmd_$builtin() function, expecting it to show the help text.

Unfortunately the commands in the log- and the diff- family want to
call into the revisions machinery, which by definition needs to have
a repository already discovered.  Strictly speaking, they may not
need a repository only for parsing "-h", but it is a good discipline
to future-proof codepath to ensure that setup_revisions() is called
after we know that a repository is there.

Handle the "git $builtin -h" special case very early in these
commands to work around potential issues.

cb71f8bdb5 PRItime: introduce a new "printf format" for timestamps
Currently, Git's source code treats all timestamps as if they were
unsigned longs. Therefore, it is okay to write "%lu" when printing them.

There is a substantial problem with that, though: at least on Windows,
time_t is *larger* than unsigned long, and hence we will want to switch
away from the ill-specified `unsigned long` data type.

So let's introduce the pseudo format "PRItime" (currently simply being
defined to "lu") to make it easier to change the data type used for
timestamps.

dc01505f7f Convert GIT_SHA1_HEXSZ used for allocation to GIT_MAX_HEXSZ
Since we will likely be introducing a new hash function at some point,
and that hash function might be longer than 40 hex characters, use the
constant GIT_MAX_HEXSZ, which is designed to be suitable for
allocations, instead of GIT_SHA1_HEXSZ.  This will ease the transition
down the line by distinguishing between places where we need to allocate
memory suitable for the largest hash from those where we need to handle
the current hash.

98985c6911 rev-list: use hdr_termination instead of a always using a newline
When adding support for prefixing output of log and other commands using
--line-prefix, commit 660e113ce1 ("graph: add support for
--line-prefix on all graph-aware output", 2016-08-31) accidentally
broke rev-list --header output.

In order to make the output appear with a line-prefix, the flow was
changed to always use the graph subsystem for display. Unfortunately
the graph flow in rev-list did not use info->hdr_termination as it was
assumed that graph output would never need to putput NULs.

Since we now always use the graph code in order to handle the case of
line-prefix, simply replace putchar('\n') with
putchar(info->hdr_termination) which will correct this issue.

Add a test for the --header case to make sure we don't break it in the
future.

660e113ce1 graph: add support for --line-prefix on all graph-aware output
Add an extension to git-diff and git-log (and any other graph-aware
displayable output) such that "--line-prefix=<string>" will print the
additional line-prefix on every line of output.

To make this work, we have to fix a few bugs in the graph API that force
graph_show_commit_msg to be used only when you have a valid graph.
Additionally, we extend the default_diff_output_prefix handler to work
even when no graph is enabled.

This is somewhat of a hack on top of the graph API, but I think it
should be acceptable here.

This will be used by a future extension of submodule display which
displays the submodule diff as the actual diff between the pre and post
commit in the submodule project.

Add some tests for both git-log and git-diff to ensure that the prefix
is honored correctly.

434ea3cdad rev-list: add optional progress reporting
It's easy to ask rev-list to do a traversal that may takes
many seconds (e.g., by calling "--objects --all"). In theory
you can monitor its progress by the output you get to
stdout, but this isn't always easy.

Some operations, like "--count", don't make any output until
the end.

And some callers, like check_everything_connected(), are
using it just for the error-checking of the traversal, and
throw away stdout entirely.

This patch adds a "--progress" option which can be used to
give some eye-candy for a user waiting for a long traversal.
This is just a rev-list option and not a regular traversal
option, because it needs cooperation from the callbacks in
builtin/rev-list.c to do the actual count.

You can ask rev-list to use bitmaps to speed up an --objects
traversal, which should generally give you your answers much
faster.

Likewise, you can ask rev-list to limit such a traversal
with `-n`, in which case we'll show only a limited set of
commits (and only the tree and commit objects directly
reachable from those commits).

But if you do both together, the results are nonsensical. We
end up limiting any fallback traversal we do to _find_ the
bitmaps, but the actual set of objects we output will be
picked arbitrarily from the union of any bitmaps we do find,
and will involve the objects of many more commits.

It's possible that somebody might want this as a "show me
what you can, but limit the amount of work you do" flag.
But as with the prior commit clamping "--count", the results
are basically non-deterministic; you'll get the values from
some commits between `n` and the total number, and you can't
tell which.

And unlike the `--count` case, we can't easily generate the
"real" value from the bitmap values (you can't just walk
back `-n` commits and subtract out the reachable objects
from the boundary commits; the bitmaps for `X` record its
total reachability, so you don't know which objects are
directly from `X` itself, which from `X^`, and so on).

So let's just fallback to the non-bitmap code path in this
case, so we always give a sane answer.

5c9f9bf313 rev-list: "adjust" results of "--count --use-bitmap-index -n"
If you ask rev-list for:

    git rev-list --count --use-bitmap-index HEAD

we optimize out the actual traversal and just give you the
number of bits set in the commit bitmap. This is faster,
which is good.

But if you ask to limit the size of the traversal, like:

    git rev-list --count --use-bitmap-index -n 100 HEAD

we'll still output the full bitmapped number we found. On
the surface, that might even seem OK. You explicitly asked
to use the bitmap index, and it was cheap to compute the
real answer, so we gave it to you.

But there's something much more complicated going on under
the hood. If we don't have a bitmap directly for HEAD, then
we have to actually traverse backwards, looking for a
bitmapped commit. And _that_ traversal is bounded by our
`-n` count.

This is a good thing, because it bounds the work we have to
do, which is probably what the user wanted by asking for
`-n`. But now it makes the output quite confusing. You might
get many values:

  - your `-n` value, if we walked back and never found a
    bitmap (or fewer if there weren't that many commits)

  - the actual full count, if we found a bitmap root for
    every path of our traversal with in the `-n` limit

  - any number in between! We might have walked back and
    found _some_ bitmaps, but then cut off the traversal
    early with some commits not accounted for in the result.

So you cannot even see a value higher than your `-n` and say
"OK, bitmaps kicked in, this must be the real full count".
The only sane thing is for git to just clamp the value to a
maximum of the `-n` value, which means we should output the
exact same results whether bitmaps are in use or not.

The test in t5310 demonstrates this by using `-n 1`.
Without this patch we fail in the full-bitmap case (where we
do not have to traverse at all) but _not_ in the
partial-bitmap case (where we have to walk down to find an
actual bitmap). With this patch, both cases just work.

I didn't implement the crazy in-between case, just because
it's complicated to set up, and is really a subset of the
full-count case, which we do cover.

simply append "c" to it temporarily, then roll back the
length, without creating a new copy.

So we could improve this by teaching the callsites of
path_name() this trick (and there are only 3). But we can
also notice that no callback actually cares about the
broken-down representation, and simply pass each callback
the full path "a/b/c" as a string. The callback code becomes
even simpler, then, as we do not have to worry about freeing
an allocated buffer, nor rolling back our modification to
the strbuf.

This is theoretically less efficient, as some callbacks
would not bother to format the final path component. But in
practice this is not measurable. Since we use the same
strbuf over and over, our work to grow it is amortized, and
we really only pay to memcpy a few bytes.

broken-down representation, and simply pass each callback
the full path "a/b/c" as a string. The callback code becomes
even simpler, then, as we do not have to worry about freeing
an allocated buffer, nor rolling back our modification to
the strbuf.

This is theoretically less efficient, as some callbacks
would not bother to format the final path component. But in
practice this is not measurable. Since we use the same
strbuf over and over, our work to grow it is amortized, and
we really only pay to memcpy a few bytes.

bd64516aca list-objects: drop name_path entirely
In the previous commit, we left name_path as a thin wrapper
around a strbuf. This patch drops it entirely. As a result,
every show_object_fn callback needs to be adjusted. However,
none of their code needs to be changed at all, because the
only use was to pass it to path_name(), which now handles
the bare strbuf.

d59f765ac9 use sha1_to_hex_r() instead of strcpy
Before sha1_to_hex_r() existed, a simple way to get hex
sha1 into a buffer was with:

  strcpy(buf, sha1_to_hex(sha1));

This isn't wrong (assuming the buf is 41 characters), but it
makes auditing the code base for bad strcpy() calls harder,
as these become false positives.

Let's convert them to sha1_to_hex_r(), and likewise for
some calls to find_unique_abbrev(). While we're here, we'll
double-check that all of the buffers are correctly sized,
and use the more obvious GIT_SHA1_HEXSZ constant.

2aea7a51a1 rev-list: make it obvious that we do not support notes
The rev-list command does not have the internal
infrastructure to display notes. Running:

  git rev-list --notes HEAD

will silently ignore the "--notes" option. Running:

  git rev-list --notes --grep=. HEAD

will crash on an assert. Running:

  git rev-list --format=%N HEAD

will place a literal "%N" in the output (it does not even
expand to an empty string).

Let's have rev-list tell the user that it cannot fill the
user's request, rather than silently producing wrong data.
Likewise, let's remove mention of the notes options from the
rev-list documentation.

c8a70d3509 rev-list: disable --use-bitmap-index when pruning commits
The reachability bitmaps do not have enough information to
tell us which commits might have changed path "foo", so the
current code produces wrong answers for:

  git rev-list --use-bitmap-index --count HEAD -- foo

(it silently ignores the "foo" limiter). Instead, we should
fall back to doing a normal traversal (it is OK to fall
back rather than complain, because --use-bitmap-index is a
pure optimization, and might not kick in for other reasons,
such as there being no bitmaps in the repository).

8597ea3afe commit: record buffer length in cache
Most callsites which use the commit buffer try to use the
cached version attached to the commit, rather than
re-reading from disk. Unfortunately, that interface provides
only a pointer to the NUL-terminated buffer, with no
indication of the original length.

For the most part, this doesn't matter. People do not put
NULs in their commit messages, and the log code is happy to
treat it all as a NUL-terminated string. However, some code
paths do care. For example, when checking signatures, we
want to be very careful that we verify all the bytes to
avoid malicious trickery.

This patch just adds an optional "size" out-pointer to
get_commit_buffer and friends. The existing callers all pass
NULL (there did not seem to be any obvious sites where we
could avoid an immediate strlen() call, though perhaps with
some further refactoring we could).

0fb370da9c provide a helper to free commit buffer
This converts two lines into one at each caller. But more
importantly, it abstracts the concept of freeing the buffer,
which will make it easier to change later.

Note that we also need to provide a "detach" mechanism for a
tricky case in index-pack. We are passed a buffer for the
object generated by processing the incoming pack. If we are
not using --strict, we just calculate the sha1 on that
buffer and return, leaving the caller to free it.  But if we
are using --strict, we actually attach that buffer to an
object, pass the object to the fsck functions, and then
detach the buffer from the object again (so that the caller
can free it as usual).  In this case, we don't want to free
the buffer ourselves, but just make sure it is no longer
associated with the commit.

Note that we are making the assumption here that the
attach/detach process does not impact the buffer at all
(e.g., it is never reallocated or modified). That holds true
now, and we have no plans to change that. However, as we
abstract the commit_buffer code, this dependency becomes
less obvious. So when we detach, let's also make sure that
we get back the same buffer that we gave to the
commit_buffer code.

aa32939fea rev-list: add bitmap mode to speed up object lists
The bitmap reachability index used to speed up the counting objects
phase during `pack-objects` can also be used to optimize a normal
rev-list if the only thing required are the SHA1s of the objects during
the list (i.e., not the path names at which trees and blobs were found).

Calling `git rev-list --objects --use-bitmap-index [committish]` will
perform an object iteration based on a bitmap result instead of actually
walking the object graph.

These are some example timings for `torvalds/linux` (warm cache,
best-of-five):

    $ time git rev-list --objects master > /dev/null

    real    0m34.191s
    user    0m33.904s
    sys     0m0.268s

    $ time git rev-list --objects --use-bitmap-index master > /dev/null

    real    0m1.041s
    user    0m0.976s
    sys     0m0.064s

Likewise, using `git rev-list --count --use-bitmap-index` will speed up
the counting operation by building the resulting bitmap and performing a
fast popcount (number of bits set on the bitmap) on the result.

Here are some sample timings of different ways to count commits in
`torvalds/linux`:

    $ time git rev-list master | wc -l
        399882

        real    0m6.524s
        user    0m6.060s
        sys     0m3.284s

    $ time git rev-list --count master
        399882

        real    0m4.318s
        user    0m4.236s
        sys     0m0.076s

    $ time git rev-list --use-bitmap-index --count master
        399882

        real    0m0.217s
        user    0m0.176s
        sys     0m0.040s

This also respects negative refs, so you can use it to count
a slice of history:

        $ time git rev-list --count v3.0..master
        144843

        real    0m1.971s
        user    0m1.932s
        sys     0m0.036s

        $ time git rev-list --use-bitmap-index --count v3.0..master
        real    0m0.280s
        user    0m0.220s
        sys     0m0.056s

Though note that the closer the endpoints, the less it helps. In the
traversal case, we have fewer commits to cross, so we take less time.
But the bitmap time is dominated by generating the pack revindex, which
is constant with respect to the refs given.

Note that you cannot yet get a fast --left-right count of a symmetric
difference (e.g., "--count --left-right master...topic"). The slow part
of that walk actually happens during the merge-base determination when
we parse "master...topic". Even though a count does not actually need to
know the real merge base (it only needs to take the symmetric difference
of the bitmaps), the revision code would require some refactoring to
handle this case.

Additionally, a `--test-bitmap` flag has been added that will perform
the same rev-list manually (i.e. using a normal revwalk) and using
bitmaps, and verify that the results are the same. This can be used to
exercise the bitmap code, and also to verify that the contents of the
.bitmap file are sane.

c01499ef69 C: have space around && and || operators
Correct all hits from

    git grep -e '\(&&\|||\)[^ ]' -e '[^	 ]\(&&\|||\)' -- '*.c'

i.e. && or || operators that are followed by anything but a SP,
or that follow something other than a SP or a HT, so that these
operators have a SP around it when necessary.

We usually refrain from making this kind of a tree-wide change in
order to avoid unnecessary conflicts with other "real work" patches,
but in this case, the end result does not have a potentially
cumbersome tree-wide impact, while this is a tree-wide cleanup.

Fixes to compat/regex/regcomp.c and xdiff/xemit.c are to replace a
HT immediately after && with a SP.

This is based on Felipe's patch to bultin/symbolic-ref.c; I did all
the finding out what other files in the whole tree need to be fixed
and did the fix and also the log message while reviewing that single
liner, so any screw-ups in this version are mine.

ecaee8050c pretty: --format output should honor logOutputEncoding
One can set an alias
	$ git config [--global] alias.lg "log --graph --pretty=format:'%Cred%h%Creset
	-%C(yellow)%d%Creset %s %Cgreen(%cd) %C(bold blue)<%an>%Creset'
	--abbrev-commit --date=local"

to see the log as a pretty tree (like *gitk* but in a terminal).

However, log messages written in an encoding i18n.commitEncoding which differs
from terminal encoding are shown corrupted even when i18n.logOutputEncoding
and terminal encoding are the same (e.g. log messages committed on a Cygwin box
with Windows-1251 encoding seen on a Linux box with a UTF-8 encoding and vice versa).

To simplify an example we can say the following two commands are expected
to give the same output to a terminal:

	$ git log --oneline --no-color
	$ git log --pretty=format:'%h %s'

However, the former pays attention to i18n.logOutputEncoding
configuration, while the latter does not when it formats "%s".

The same corruption is true for
	$ git diff --submodule=log
and
	$ git rev-list --pretty=format:%s HEAD
and
	$ git reset --hard

This patch makes pretty --format honor logOutputEncoding when it formats
log message.

When we show a reflog selector (e.g., via "git log -g"), we
perform some DWIM magic: while we normally show the entry's
index (e.g., HEAD@{1}), if the user has given us a date
with "--date", then we show a date-based select (e.g.,
HEAD@{yesterday}).

However, we don't want to trigger this magic if the
alternate date format we got was from the "log.date"
configuration; that is not sufficiently strong context for
us to invoke this particular magic. To fix this, commit
f4ea32f (improve reflog date/number heuristic, 2009-09-24)
introduced a "date_mode_explicit" flag in rev_info. This
flag is set only when we see a "--date" option on the
command line, and we a vanilla date to the reflog code if
the date was not explicit.

Later, commit 8f8f547 (Introduce new pretty formats %g[sdD]
for reflog information, 2009-10-19) added another way to
show selectors, and it did not respect the date_mode_explicit
flag from f4ea32f.

This patch propagates the date_mode_explicit flag to the
pretty-print code, which can then use it to pass the
appropriate date field to the reflog code. This brings the
behavior of "%gd" in line with the other formats, and means
that its output is independent of any user configuration.

Often we want to verify everything reachable from a given set of commits
are present in our repository and connected without a gap to the tips of
our refs. We used to do this for this purpose:

    $ rev-list --objects $commits_to_be_tested --not --all

Even though this is good enough for catching missing commits and trees,
we show the object name but do not verify their existence, let alone their
well-formedness, for the blob objects at the leaf level.

Add a new "--verify-object" option so that we can catch missing and broken
blobs as well.

6bf139440c clean up calling conventions for pretty.c functions
We have a pretty_print_context representing the parameters
for a pretty-print session, but we did not use it uniformly.
As a result, functions kept growing more and more arguments.

Let's clean this up in a few ways:

  1. All pretty-print pp_* functions now take a context.
     This lets us reduce the number of arguments to these
     functions, since we were just passing around the
     context values separately.

  2. The context argument now has a cmit_fmt field, which
     was passed around separately. That's one less argument
     per function.

  3. The context argument always comes first, which makes
     calling a little more uniform.

This drops lines from some callers, and adds lines in a few
places (because we need an extra line to set the context's
fmt field). Overall, we don't save many lines, but the lines
that are there are a lot simpler and more readable.

ad5aeeded3 revision.c: introduce --min-parents and --max-parents options
Introduce --min-parents and --max-parents options which limit the
revisions to those commits which have at least (or at most) that many
commits, where negative arguments for --max-parents= denote infinity
(i.e. no upper limit).

In particular:

  --max-parents=1 is the same as --no-merges;
  --min-parents=2 is the same as --merges;
  --max-parents=0 shows only roots; and
  --min-parents=3 shows only octopus merges

Using --min-parents=n and --max-parents=m with n>m gives you what you ask
for (i.e. nothing) for obvious reasons, just like when you give --merges
(show only merge commits) and --no-merges (show only non-merge commits) at
the same time.

Also, introduce --no-min-parents and --no-max-parents to do the obvious
thing for convenience.

We compute the number of parents only when we limit by that, so there
is no performance impact when there are no limiters.

rev-list --graph" correctly handle embedded NULs by looking
only at the resulting strbuf's length, and never treating it
as a C string. The code path for regular rev-list, however,
used printf("%s"), which resulted in truncated output. This
patch uses fwrite instead, like the --graph code path.

f69c501832 rev-list: introduce --count option
Add a --count option that, instead of actually listing the commits,
merely counts them.

This is mostly geared towards script use, and to this end it acts
specially when used with --left-right: it outputs the left and right
counts separately.  Previously, scripts would have to run a shell loop
or small inline script over to achieve the same.  (Without
--left-right, a simple |wc -l does the job.)
