dd77cf61a1 help: include fsmonitor--daemon feature flag in version info
Add the "feature: fsmonitor--daemon" message to the output of
`git version --build-options`.

The builtin FSMonitor is only available on certain platforms and
even then only when certain Makefile flags are enabled, so print
a message in the verbose version output when it is available.

This can be used by test scripts for prereq testing. Granted, tests
could just try `git fsmonitor--daemon status` and look for a 128 exit
code or grep for a "not supported" message on stderr, but these
methods are rather obscure.

The main advantage is that the feature message will automatically
appear in bug reports and other support requests.

This concept was also used during the development of Scalar for
similar reasons.

93de1b6999 help: don't print "\n" before single-section output
Fix a formatting regression in 1b81d8cb19 (help: use command-list.txt
for the source of guides, 2018-05-20). Adjust the output of "git help
--guides" and any other future single-section commands so that a
newline isn't inserted before the only section being printed.

This changes the output from:

    $ git help --guides

    The Git concept guides are:
    [...]

To:

    $ git help --guides
    The Git concept guides are:
    [...]

That we started printing an extra "\n" in 1b81d8cb19 wasn't intended,
but an emergent effect of moving all of the printing of "git help"
output to code that was ready to handle printing N sections.

With 1b81d8cb19 we started using the "print_cmd_by_category()"
function added earlier in the same series, or in cfb22a02ab (help:
use command-list.h for common command list, 2018-05-10).

Fixing this formatting nit is easy enough. Let's have all of the
output that would like to be "\n"-separated from other lines emit its
own "\n". We then adjust "print_cmd_by_category()" to only print a
"\n" to delimit the sections it's printing out.

1ce590133b help: add --no-[external-commands|aliases] for use with --all
Add the ability to only emit git's own usage information under
--all. This also allows us to extend the "test_section_spacing" tests
added in a preceding commit to test "git help --all"
output.

Previously we could not do that, as the tests might find a git-*
command in the "$PATH", which would make the output differ from one
setup to another.

cd87ce7d0d help.c: use puts() instead of printf{,_ln}() for consistency
Change code in "help.c" that used printf_ln() without format
specifiers to use puts() instead, as other existing code in the file
does. Let's also change related code to use puts() instead of the
equivalent of calling "printf" with a "%s\n" format.

This formatting-only change will make a subsequent functional change
easier to read, as it'll be changing code that's consistently using
the same functions to do the same things.

0fc8ed154c help: make auto-correction prompt more consistent
There are three callsites of git_prompt() helper function that ask a
"yes/no" question to the end user, but one of them in help.c that
asks if the suggested auto-correction is OK, which is given when the
user makes a possible typo in a Git subcommand name, is formatted

06fa4db3f7 help: move column config discovery to help.c library
When a git_config() call was added in dbfae68969 (help: reuse
print_columns() for help -a, 2012-04-13) to read the column config
we'd always use the resulting "colopts" variable.

Then in 63eae83f8f (help: add "-a --verbose" to list all commands
with synopsis, 2018-05-20) we started only using the "colopts" config
under "--all" if "--no-verbose" was also given, but the "git_config()"
call was not moved inside the "verbose" branch of the code.

This change effectively does that, we'll only call list_commands()
under "--all --no-verbose", so let's have it look up the config it
needs. See 26c7d06783 (help -a: improve and make --verbose default, 2018-09-29) for another case in help.c where we look up config.

The get_colopts() function is named for consistency with the existing
get_alias() function added in 26c7d06783.

644bb953ce help.c: help.autocorrect=never means "do not compute suggestions"
While help.autocorrect can be set to 0 to decline auto-execution of
possibly mistyped commands, it still spends cycles to compute the
suggestions, and it wastes screen real estate.

Update help.autocorrect to accept the string "never" to just exit
with error upon mistyped commands to help users who prefer to never
see suggested corrections at all.

While at it, introduce "immediate" as a more readable way to
immediately execute the auto-corrected command, which can be done
with negative value.

722fc37491 help: do not expect built-in commands to be hardlinked
When building with SKIP_DASHED_BUILT_INS=YesPlease, the built-in
commands are no longer present in the `PATH` as hardlinks to `git`.

As a consequence, `load_command_list()` needs to be taught to find the
names of the built-in commands from elsewhere.

This only affected the output of `git --list-cmds=main`, but not the
output of `git help -a` because the latter includes the built-in
commands by virtue of them being listed in command-list.txt.

The bug was detected via a patch series that turns the merge strategies
included in Git into built-in commands: `git merge -s help` relies on
`load_command_list()` to determine the list of available merge
strategies.

f1de981e8b config: fix leaks from git_config_get_string_const()
There are two functions to get a single config string:

  - git_config_get_string()

  - git_config_get_string_const()

One might naively think that the first one allocates a new string and
the second one just points us to the internal configset storage. But
in fact they both allocate a new copy; the second one exists only to
avoid having to cast when using it with a const global which we never
intend to free.

The documentation for the function explains that clearly, but it seems
I'm not alone in being surprised by this. Of 17 calls to the function,
13 of them leak the resulting value.

We could obviously fix these by adding the appropriate free(). But it
would be simpler still if we actually had a non-allocating way to get
the string. There's git_config_get_value() but that doesn't quite do
what we want. If the config key is present but is a boolean with no
value (e.g., "[foo]bar" in the file), then we'll get NULL (whereas the
string versions will print an error and die).

So let's introduce a new variant, git_config_get_string_tmp(), that
behaves as these callers expect. We need a new name because we have new
semantics but the same function signature (so even if we converted the
four remaining callers, topics in flight might be surprised). The "tmp"
is because this value should only be held onto for a short time. In
practice it's rare for us to clear and refresh the configset,
invalidating the pointer, but hopefully the "tmp" makes callers think
about the lifetime. In each of the converted cases here the value only
needs to last within the local function or its immediate caller.

0371a764d2 help: drop usage of 'common' and 'useful' for guides
Since 1b81d8cb19 (help: use command-list.txt for the source of guides,
2018-05-20), all man5/man7 guides listed in command-list.txt appear in
the output of 'git help -g'.

However, 'git help -g' still prefixes this list with "The common Git
guides are:", which makes one wonder if there are others!

In the same spirit, the man page for 'git help' describes the '--guides'
option as listing 'useful' guides, which is not false per se but can
also be taken to mean that there are other guides that exist but are not
useful.

Instead of 'common' and 'useful', use 'Git concept guides' in both
places. To keep the code in line with this change, rename
help.c::list_common_guides_help to list_guides_help.

39f4919dc5 help: add shell-path to --build-options
It may be useful to know which shell Git was built to try to point to,
in the event that shell-based Git commands are failing. $SHELL_PATH is
set during the build and used to launch the manpage viewer, as well as
by git-compat-util.h, and it's used during tests. 'git version

617d57195a bugreport: gather git version and build info
Knowing which version of Git a user has and how it was built allows us
to more precisely pin down the circumstances when a certain issue
occurs, so teach bugreport how to tell us the same output as 'git
version --build-options'.

It's not ideal to directly call 'git version --build-options' because
that output goes to stdout. Instead, wrap the version string in a helper
within help.[ch] library, and call that helper from within the bugreport
library.

709df95b78 help: move list_config_help to builtin/help
Starting in 3ac68a93fd, help.o began to depend on builtin/branch.o,
builtin/clean.o, and builtin/config.o. This meant that help.o was
unusable outside of the context of the main Git executable.

To make help.o usable by other commands again, move list_config_help()
into builtin/help.c (where it makes sense to assume other builtin libraries
are present).

When command-list.h is included but a member is not used, we start to
hear a compiler warning. Since the config list is generated in a fairly
different way than the command list, and since commands and config
options are semantically different, move the config list into its own
header and move the generator into its own script and build rule.

For reasons explained in 976aaedc (msvc: add a Makefile target to
pre-generate the Visual Studio solution, 2019-07-29), some build
artifacts we consider non-source files cannot be generated in the
Visual Studio environment, and we already have some Makefile tweaks
to help Visual Studio to use generated command-list.h header file.
Do the same to a new generated file, config-list.h, introduced by
this change.

2ed2e19958 help_unknown_ref(): check for refname ambiguity
When the user asks to merge "foo" and we suggest "origin/foo" instead,
we do so by simply chopping off "refs/remotes/" from the front of the
suggested ref. This is usually fine, but it's possible that the
resulting name is ambiguous (e.g., you have "refs/heads/origin/foo",
too).

Let's use shorten_unambiguous_ref() to do this the right way, which
should usually yield the same "origin/foo", but "remotes/origin/foo" if
necessary.

Note that in this situation there may be other options (e.g., we could
suggest "heads/origin/foo" as well). I'll leave that up for debate; the
focus here is just to avoid giving advice that does not actually do what
we expect.

8ed51b0666 help_unknown_ref(): duplicate collected refnames
When "git merge" sees an unknown refname, we iterate through the refs to
try to suggest some possible alternates. We do so with for_each_ref(),
and in the callback we add some of the refnames we get to a
string_list that is declared with NODUP, directly adding a pointer into
the refname string our callback received.

But the for_each_ref() machinery does not promise that the refname
string will remain valid, and as a result we may print garbage memory.

The code in question dates back to its inception in e56181060e (help:
add help_unknown_ref(), 2013-05-04). But back then, the refname strings
generally did remain stable, at least immediately after the
for_each_ref() call. Later, in d1cf15516f (packed_ref_iterator_begin():
iterate using `mmapped_ref_iterator`, 2017-09-25), we started
consistently re-using a separate buffer for packed refs.

The fix is simple: duplicate the strings we intend to collect. We
already call string_list_clear(), so the memory is correctly freed.

057ab54b66 completion: fix multiple command removals
Commit 6532f3740b ("completion: allow to customize the completable
command list", 2018-05-20) tried to allow multiple space-separated
entries in completion.commands. To do this, it copies each parsed token
into a strbuf so that the result is NUL-terminated.

However, for tokens starting with "-", it accidentally passes the
original non-terminated string, meaning that only the final one worked.
Switch to using the strbuf.

83b0ecf333 git: read local config in --list-cmds
Normally code that is checking config before we've decided to do
setup_git_directory() would use read_early_config(), which uses
discover_git_directory() to tentatively see if we're in a repo,
and if so to add it to the config sequence.

But list_cmds() uses the caching configset mechanism which
rightly does not use read_early_config(), because it has no
idea if it's being called early.

Call setup_git_directory_gently() so we can pick up repo-level
config (like completion.commands).

1c4b985965 help -a: handle aliases with long names gracefully
We take pains to determine the longest command beforehand, so that we
can align the category column after printing the command names.

However, then we re-use that value when printing the aliases. If any

to add a negative number of spaces (but `mput_char()` does not expect
any negative values and simply decrements until the value is 0, i.e.
it tries to add close to 2**31 spaces).

Let's fix this by adjusting the `longest` variable before printing the

bf1a11f0a1 sideband: highlight keywords in remote sideband output
The colorization is controlled with the config setting "color.remote".

Supported keywords are "error", "warning", "hint" and "success". They
are highlighted if they appear at the start of the line, which is
common in error messages, eg.

   ERROR: commit is missing Change-Id

The Git push process itself prints lots of non-actionable messages
(eg. bandwidth statistics, object counters for different phases of the
process). This obscures actionable error messages that servers may
send back. Highlighting keywords in the sideband draws more attention
to those messages.

The background for this change is that Gerrit does server-side
processing to create or update code reviews, and actionable error
messages (eg. missing Change-Id) must be communicated back to the user
during the push. User research has shown that new users have trouble
seeing these messages.

The highlighting is done on the client rather than server side, so
servers don't have to grow capabilities to understand terminal escape
codes and terminal state. It also consistent with the current state
where Git is control of the local display (eg. prefixing messages with
"remote: ").

The highlighting can be configured using color.remote.<KEYWORD>
configuration settings. Since the keys are matched case insensitively,
we match the keywords case insensitively too.

Finally, this solution is backwards compatible: many servers already
prefix their messages with "error", and they will benefit from this
change without requiring a server update. By contrast, a server-side
solution would likely require plumbing the TERM variable through the
git protocol, so it would require changes to both server and client.

https://public-inbox.org/git/20171129032214.GB32345@sigill.intra.peff.net/

As it gets complicated to correctly track the data length, instead transfer
the data through parent process and cut the pipe as the specified length is
reached. Do it only when CONTENT_LENGTH is set, otherwise pass the input
directly to the forked commands.

Add tests for cases:

* CONTENT_LENGTH is set, script's stdin has more data, with all combinations
of variations: fetch or push, plain or compressed body, correct or truncated
  input.

* CONTENT_LENGTH is specified to a value which does not fit into ssize_t.

e17ca92637 completion: drop the hard coded list of config vars
The new help option --config-for-completion is a machine friendlier
version of --config where all the placeholders and wildcards are
dropped, leaving only the good, completable prefixes for
git-completion.bash to consume.

3ac68a93fd help: add --config to list all available config
Sometimes it helps to list all available config vars so the user can
search for something they want. The config man page can also be used
but it's harder to search if you want to focus on the variable name,
for example.

This is not the best way to collect the available config since it's
not precise. Ideally we should have a centralized list of config in C
code (pretty much like 'struct option'), but that's a lot more work.
This will do for now.

1b81d8cb19 help: use command-list.txt for the source of guides
The help command currently hard codes the list of guides and their
summary in C. Let's move this list to command-list.txt. This lets us
extract summary lines from Documentation/git*.txt. This also
potentially lets us list guides in git.txt, but I'll leave that for
now.

63eae83f8f help: add "-a --verbose" to list all commands with synopsis
This lists all recognized commands [1] by category. The group order
follows closely git.txt.

[1] We may actually show commands that are not built (e.g. if you set
NO_PERL you don't have git-instaweb but it's still listed here). I
ignore the problem because on Linux a git package could be split
anyway. The "git-core" package may not contain git-instaweb even if
it's built because it may end up in a separate package. We can't know
anyway.

3c7777672b git: support --list-cmds=list-<category>
This allows us to select any group of commands by a category defined
in command-list.txt. This is an internal/hidden option so we don't
have to be picky about the category name or worried about exposing too
much.

This will be used later by git-completion.bash to retrieve certain
command groups.

6bb2dc0b94 completion: implement and use --list-cmds=main,others
This is part of the effort to break down and provide commands by
category in machine-readable form. This could be helpful later on when
completion script switches to use --list-cmds for selecting
completable commands. It would be much easier for the user to choose
to complete _all_ commands instead of the default selection by passing
different values to --list-cmds in git-completino.bash.

While at there, replace "git help -a" in git-completion.bash with
--list-cmds since it's better suited for this task.

cfb22a02ab help: use command-list.h for common command list
The previous commit added code generation for all_cmd_desc[] which
includes almost everything we need to generate common command list.
Convert help code to use that array instead and drop common_cmds[] array.

The description of each common command group is removed from
command-list.txt. This keeps this file format simpler. common-cmds.h
will not be generated correctly after this change due to the
command-list.txt format change. But it does not matter and
common-cmds.h will be removed.

ed32b788c0 version --build-options: report commit, too, if possible
In particular when local tags are used (or tags that are pushed to some
fork) to build Git, it is very hard to figure out from which particular
revision a particular Git executable was built. It gets worse when those
tags are deleted, or even updated.

Let's just report an exact, unabbreviated commit name in our build
options.

We need to be careful, though, to report when the current commit cannot
be determined, e.g. when building from a tarball without any associated
Git repository. This could be the case also when extracting Git's source
code into an unrelated Git worktree.

b22894049f version --build-options: also report host CPU
It can be helpful for bug reports to include information about the
environment in which the bug occurs. "git version --build-options" can
help to supplement this information. In addition to the size of 'long'
already reported by --build-options, also report the host's CPU type.
Example output:

   $ git version --build-options
   git version 2.9.3.windows.2.826.g06c0f2f
   cpu: x86_64
   sizeof-long: 4

New Makefile variable HOST_CPU supports cross-compiling.

968b1fe263 auto-correct: tweak phrasing
When help.autoCorrect is enabled, an invalid git command prints a
warning and a continuation message, which differs depending on
whether or not the value of help.autoCorrect is positive or
negative.

With help.autoCorrect = 15:

WARNING: You called a Git command named 'lgo', which does not exist.
Continuing under the assumption that you meant 'log'
   in 1.5 seconds automatically...

With help.autoCorrect < 0:

WARNING: You called a Git command named 'lgo', which does not exist.
Continuing under the assumption that you meant 'log'

The continuation message's phrasing is awkward. This commit cleans it up.
As a bonus, we now use full-sentence strings which make translation easier.

With help.autoCorrect = 15:

WARNING: You called a Git command named 'lgo', which does not exist.
Continuing in 1.5 seconds, assuming that you meant 'log'.

With help.autoCorrect < 0:

WARNING: You called a Git command named 'lgo', which does not exist.
