The file processed by `git commit-graph` is referred to as the
"commit-graph file", also with a dash. We have a few references to the
"commit graph file", though, without the dash. These occur in
git-commit-graph.txt as well as in Doc/technical/commit-graph.txt. Fix
them.
Do not change the references to the "commit graph" (without "... file")
as a data structure.

A new variant repo_diff_setup() is added that takes 'struct repository *'
and diff_setup() becomes a thin macro around it that is protected by
NO_THE_REPOSITORY_COMPATIBILITY_MACROS, similar to NO_THE_INDEX_....
The plan is these macros will always be defined for all library files
and the macros are only accessible in builtin/

As it exists right now, the commit-graph feature may provide
inconsistent results when combined with commit grafts, replace objects,
and shallow clones. Update the design document to discuss why these
interactions are difficult to reconcile and how we will avoid errors by
preventing updates to and reads from the commit-graph file when these
other features exist.

From a security perspective, it seems that SHA-256, BLAKE2, SHA3-256,
K12, and so on are all believed to have similar security properties.
All are good options from a security point of view.
SHA-256 has a number of advantages:
* It has been around for a while, is widely used, and is supported by
just about every single crypto library (OpenSSL, mbedTLS, CryptoNG,
SecureTransport, etc).
* When you compare against SHA1DC, most vectorized SHA-256
implementations are indeed faster, even without acceleration.
* If we're doing signatures with OpenPGP (or even, I suppose, CMS),
we're going to be using SHA-2, so it doesn't make sense to have our
security depend on two separate algorithms when either one of them
alone could break the security when we could just depend on one.
So SHA-256 it is. Update the hash-function-transition design doc to
say so.
After this patch, there are no remaining instances of the string
"NewHash", except for an unrelated use from 2008 as a variable name in
t/t9700/test.pl.

Currently rerere can't handle nested conflicts and will error out when
it encounters such conflicts. Do that by recursively calling the
'handle_conflict' function to normalize the conflict.
Note that a conflict like this would only be produced if a user
commits a file with conflict markers, and gets a conflict including
that in a susbsequent operation.
The conflict ID calculation here deserves some explanation:
As we are using the same handle_conflict function, the nested conflict
is normalized the same way as for non-nested conflicts, which means
the ancestor in the diff3 case is stripped out, and the parts of the
conflict are ordered alphabetically.
The conflict ID is however is only calculated in the top level
handle_conflict call, so it will include the markers that 'rerere'
adds to the output. e.g. say there's the following conflict:

The changelog embedded in the document pre-dates the addition of the
document to git.git (it used to be a Google Doc), so it only goes up
to 752414ae43 ("technical doc: add a design doc for hash function
transition", 2017-09-27).
Since then I made some small edits to it, which would have been worthy
of including in this changelog (but weren't). Instead of amending it
to include these, just note that future changes will be noted in the
log.

validate the objects it receives from the other side. The server
side has been corrected to send objects that are directly
requested, even if they may match the filtering criteria (e.g. when
doing a "lazy blob" partial clone).

The final pair of chunks for the multi-pack-index file stores the object
offsets. We default to using 32-bit offsets as in the pack-index version
1 format, but if there exists an offset larger than 32-bits, we use a
trick similar to the pack-index version 2 format by storing all offsets
at least 2^31 in a 64-bit table; we use the 32-bit table to point into
that 64-bit table as necessary.
We only store these 64-bit offsets if necessary, so create a test that
manipulates a version 2 pack-index to fake a large offset. This allows
us to test that the large offset table is created, but the data does not
match the actual packfile offsets. The multi-pack-index offset does match
the (corrupted) pack-index offset, so a future feature will compare these
offsets during a 'verify' step.

The multi-pack-index needs to track which packfiles it indexes. Store
these in our first required chunk. Since filenames are not well
structured, add padding to keep good alignment in later chunks.
Modify the 'git multi-pack-index read' subcommand to output the
existence of the pack-file name chunk. Modify t5319-multi-pack-index.sh
to reflect this new output and the new expected number of chunks.
Defense in depth: A pattern we are using in the multi-pack-index feature
is to verify the data as we write it. We want to ensure we never write
invalid data to the multi-pack-index. There are many checks that verify
that the values we are writing fit the format definitions. This mainly
helps developers while working on the feature, but it can also identify
issues that only appear when dealing with very large data sets. These
large sets are hard to encode into test cases.

The multi-pack-index feature generalizes the existing pack-index
feature by indexing objects across multiple pack-files.
Describe the basic file format, using a 12-byte header followed by
a lookup table for a list of "chunks" which will be described later.
The file ends with a footer containing a checksum using the hash
algorithm.
The header allows later versions to create breaking changes by
advancing the version number. We can also change the hash algorithm
using a different version value.
We will add the individual chunk format information as we introduce
the code that writes that information.

A filter line in a request to upload-pack filters out objects regardless
of whether they are directly referenced by a "want" line or not. This
means that cloning with "--filter=blob:none" (or another filter that
excludes blobs) from a repository with at least one ref pointing to a
blob (for example, the Git repository itself) results in output like the
following:
error: missing object referenced by 'refs/tags/junio-gpg-pub'
and if that particular blob is not referenced by a fetched tree, the
resulting clone fails fsck because there is no object from the remote to
vouch that the missing object is a promisor object.
Update both the protocol and the upload-pack implementation to include
all explicitly specified "want" objects in the packfile regardless of
the filter specification.

The commit-graph feature shipped in Git 2.18 has some inconsistencies in
the constants used by the implementation and specified by the format
document.
The commit data chunk uses the key "CDAT" in the file format, but was
previously documented to say "CGET".
The commit data chunk stores commit parents using two 32-bit fields that
typically store the integer position of the parent in the list of commit
ids within the commit-graph file. When a parent does not exist, we had
documented the value 0xffffffff, but implemented the value 0x70000000.
This swap is easy to correct in the documentation, but unfortunately
reduces the number of commits that we can store in the commit-graph.
Update that estimate, too.

Currently, while performing packfile negotiation, clients are only
allowed to specify their desired objects using object ids. This causes
a vulnerability to failure when an object turns non-existent during
negotiation, which may happen if, for example, the desired repository is
provided by multiple Git servers in a load-balancing arrangement and
there exists replication delay.
In order to eliminate this vulnerability, implement the ref-in-want
feature for the 'fetch' command in protocol version 2. This feature
enables the 'fetch' command to support requests in the form of ref names
through a new "want-ref <ref>" parameter. At the conclusion of
negotiation, the server will send a list of all of the wanted references
(as provided by "want-ref" lines) in addition to the generated packfile.

aspects varies in ways that could surprise users. (In fact, it's not

When a short hexadecimal string is used to name an object but there
are multiple objects that share the string as the prefix of their
names, the code lists these ambiguous candidates in a help message.
These object names are now sorted according to their types for
easier eyeballing.

The current document mentions OBJ_* constants without their actual
values. A git developer would know these are from cache.h but that's
not very friendly to a person who wants to read this file to implement
a pack file parser.
Similarly, the deltified representation is not documented at all (the
"document" is basically patch-delta.c). Translate that C code to
English with a bit more about what ofs-delta and ref-delta mean.

Change the output emitted when an ambiguous object is encountered so
that we show tags first, then commits, followed by trees, and finally
blobs. Within each type we show objects in hashcmp() order. Before
this change the objects were only ordered by hashcmp().
The reason for doing this is that the output looks better as a result,
e.g. the v2.17.0 tag before this change on "git show e8f2" would
display:

Since we show the commit data in the output that's nicely aligned once
we sort by object type. The decision to show tags before commits is
pretty arbitrary. I don't want to order by object_type since there
tags come last after blobs, which doesn't make sense if we want to
show the most important things first.
I could display them after commits, but it's much less likely that
we'll display a tag, so if there is one it makes sense to show it
prominently at the top.
A note on the implementation: Derrick rightly pointed out[1] that
we're bending over backwards here in get_short_oid() to first
de-duplicate the list, and then emit it, but could simply do it in one
step.
The reason for that is that oid_array_for_each_unique() doesn't
actually require that the array be sorted by oid_array_sort(), it just
needs to be sorted in some order that guarantees that all objects with
the same ID are adjacent to one another, which (barring a hash
collision, which'll be someone else's problem) the sort_ambiguous()
function does.
I agree that would be simpler for this code, and had forgotten why I
initially wrote it like this[2]. But on further reflection I think
it's better to do more work here just so we're not underhandedly using
the oid-array API where we lie about the list being sorted. That would
break any subsequent use of oid_array_lookup() in subtle ways.
I could get around that by hacking the API itself to support this
use-case and documenting it, which I did as a WIP patch in [3], but I
think it's too much code smell just for this one call site. It's
simpler for the API to just introduce a oid_array_for_each() function
to eagerly spew out the list without sorting or de-duplication, and
then do the de-duplication and sorting in two passes.

In commit dc8441fdb ("config: don't implicitly use gitdir or commondir",
2017-06-14) the function git_config_with_options was renamed to
config_with_options to better reflect the fact that it does not access
the git global config or the repo config by default.
However Documentation/technical/api-config.txt still refers to the
previous name, fix that.
While at it also update the documentation about the extra parameters,
because they too changed since the initial definition.

The fetch-pack/upload-pack protocol v2 was developed independently of
the filter parameter (used in partial fetches), thus it did not include
support for it. Add support for the filter parameter.
Like in the legacy protocol, the server advertises and supports "filter"
only if uploadpack.allowfilter is configured.
Like in the legacy protocol, the client continues with a warning if
"--filter" is specified, but the server does not advertise it.

It is tempting to do away with commit_graft altogether (in the long
haul), now that grafts are deprecated.
However, the shallow feature needs a couple of things that the replace

Add document specifying the binary format for commit graphs. This
format allows for:
* New versions.
* New hash functions and hash lengths.
* Optional extensions.
Basic header information is followed by a binary table of contents
into "chunks" that include:
* An ordered list of commit object IDs.
* A 256-entry fanout into that list of OIDs.
* A list of metadata for the commits.
* A list of "large edges" to enable octopus merges.
The format automatically includes two parent positions for every
commit. This favors speed over space, since using only one position
per commit would cause an extra level of indirection for every merge
commit. (Octopus merges suffer from this indirection, but they are
very rare.)

Attempt to clarify what the SHAttered attack means in practice for
Git. The previous version of the text made no mention whatsoever of
Git already having a mitigation for this specific attack, which the
SHAttered researchers claim will detect cryptanalytic collision
attacks.
I may have gotten some of the nuances wrong, but as far as I know this
new text accurately summarizes the current situation with SHA-1 in
git. I.e. git doesn't really use SHA-1 anymore, it uses
Hardened-SHA-1 (they just so happen to produce the same outputs
99.99999999999...% of the time).
Thus the previous text was incorrect in asserting that:
[...]As a result [of SHAttered], SHA-1 cannot be considered
cryptographically secure any more[...]
That's not the case. We have a mitigation against SHAttered, *however*
we consider it prudent to move to work towards a NewHash should future
vulnerabilities in either SHA-1 or Hardened-SHA-1 emerge.

Change the "Repository format extension" to accurately describe what
happens with different versions of Git when they encounter NewHash
repositories, instead of only saying what happens with versions v2.7.0
and later.
See ab9cb76f66 ("Repository format version check.", 2005-11-25) and
00a09d57eb ("introduce "extensions" form of
core.repositoryformatversion", 2015-06-23) for the relevant changes to
the setup code where these variables are checked.

Introduce the ls-refs server command. In protocol v2, the ls-refs
command is used to request the ref advertisement from the server. Since
it is a command which can be requested (as opposed to mandatory in v1),
a client can sent a number of parameters in its request to limit the ref
advertisement based on provided ref-prefixes.

Introduce git-serve, the base server for protocol version 2.
Protocol version 2 is intended to be a replacement for Git's current
wire protocol. The intention is that it will be a simpler, less
wasteful protocol which can evolve over time.
Protocol version 2 improves upon version 1 by eliminating the initial
ref advertisement. In its place a server will export a list of
capabilities and commands which it supports in a capability
advertisement. A client can then request that a particular command be
executed by providing a number of capabilities and command specific
parameters. At the completion of a command, a client can request that
another command be executed or can terminate the connection by sending a
flush packet.

The http-protocol.txt spec fails to mention that a flush packet
comes in the smart server response after sending the "service"
header.
Technically the client code is actually ready to receive an
arbitrary number of headers here, but since we haven't
introduced any other headers in the past decade (and the
client would just throw them away), let's not mention it in
the spec.
This fixes both BNF and the example. While we're fixing the
latter, let's also add the missing flush after the ref list.

Teach upload-pack to negotiate object filtering over the protocol and
to send filter parameters to pack-objects. This is intended for partial
clone and fetch.
The idea to make upload-pack configurable using uploadpack.allowFilter

Follow the Oxford style, which says to use "up-to-date" before the noun,
but "up to date" after it. Don't change plumbing (specifically
send-pack.c, but transport.c (git push) also has the same string).
This was produced by grepping for "up-to-date" and "up to date". It
turned out we only had to edit in one direction, removing the hyphens.
Fix a typo in Documentation/git-diff-index.txt while we're there.

The "tag.pager" configuration variable was useless for those who
actually create tag objects, as it interfered with the use of an
editor. A new mechanism has been introduced for commands to enable
pager depending on what operation is being carried out to fix this,
and then "git tag -l" is made to run pager by default.

into builtin.h. Format it as a comment. Remove a '+' which was needed
when the information was formatted for AsciiDoc. Similarly, change

even though the command should not lose ignored ones without "-x".
"git status --ignored" did not list ignored and untracked files
without "-uall". These have been corrected.

The receive-pack program now makes sure that the push certificate
records the same set of push options used for pushing.

When we taught read_directory_recursive() to recurse into untracked
directories in search of ignored files given DIR_SHOW_IGNORED_TOO, that
had the side effect of teaching it to collect the untracked contents of
untracked directories. It doesn't always make sense to return these,
though (we do need them for `clean -d`), so we introduce a flag
(DIR_KEEP_UNTRACKED_CONTENTS) to control whether or not read_directory()
strips dir->entries of the untracked contents of untracked dirs.
We also introduce check_contains() to check if one dir_entry corresponds
to a path which contains the path corresponding to another dir_entry.
This also fixes known breakages in t7061, since status --ignored now
searches untracked directories for ignored files.

Some platforms have ulong that is smaller than time_t, and our
historical use of ulong for timestamp would mean they cannot
represent some timestamp that the platform allows. Invent a
separate and dedicated timestamp_t (so that we can distingiuish
timestamps and a vanilla ulongs, which along is already a good
move), and then declare uintmax_t is the type to be used as the
timestamp_t.

In commit f6a4e61 ("push: accept push options", 2016-07-14), send-pack
was taught to include push options both within the signed cert (if the
push is a signed push) and outside the signed cert; however,
receive-pack ignores push options within the cert, only handling push
options outside the cert.
Teach receive-pack, in the case that push options are provided for a
signed push, to verify that the push options both within the cert and
outside the cert are consistent.
This sets in stone the requirement that send-pack redundantly send its
push options in 2 places, but I think that this is better than the
alternatives. Sending push options only within the cert is
backwards-incompatible with existing Git servers (which read push
options only from outside the cert), and sending push options only
outside the cert means that the push options are not signed for.

Git's source code assumes that unsigned long is at least as precise as
time_t. Which is incorrect, and causes a lot of problems, in particular
where unsigned long is only 32-bit (notably on Windows, even in 64-bit
versions).
So let's just use a more appropriate data type instead. In preparation
for this, we introduce the new `timestamp_t` data type.
By necessity, this is a very, very large patch, as it has to replace all
timestamps' data type in one go.
As we will use a data type that is not necessarily identical to `time_t`,
we need to be very careful to use `time_t` whenever we interact with the
system functions, and `timestamp_t` everywhere else.

"git fetch-pack" was not prepared to accept ERR packet that the
upload-pack can send with a human-readable error message. It
showed the packet contents with ERR prefix, so there was no data
loss, but it was redundant to say "ERR" in an error message.

Currently, fetch-pack prints a confusing error message ("expected
ACK/NAK") when the server it's communicating with sends a pkt-line
starting with "ERR". Replace it with a less confusing error message.
Also update the documentation describing the fetch-pack/upload-pack
protocol (pack-protocol.txt) to indicate that "ERR" can be sent in the
place of "ACK" or "NAK". In practice, this has been done for quite some
time by other Git implementations (e.g. JGit sends "want $id not valid")
and by Git itself (since commit bdb31ea: "upload-pack: report "not our
ref" to client", 2017-02-23) whenever a "want" line references an object
that it does not have. (This is uncommon, but can happen if a repository
is garbage-collected during a negotiation.)

When looking for documentation for a specific function, you may be tempted
to run
git -C Documentation grep index_name_pos
only to find the file technical/api-in-core-index.txt, which doesn't
help for understanding the given function. It would be better to not find
these functions in the documentation, such that people directly dive into
the code instead.

Subject: clear_delta_base_cache(): don't modify hashmap while iterating
Removing entries while iterating causes fast-import to
access an already-freed `struct packed_git`, leading to
various confusing errors.
What happens is that clear_delta_base_cache() drops the
whole contents of the cache by iterating over the hashmap,
calling release_delta_base_cache() on each entry. That
function removes the item from the hashmap. The hashmap code
may then shrink the table, but the hashmap_iter struct
retains an offset from the old table.
As a result, the next call to hashmap_iter_next() may claim
that the iteration is done, even though some items haven't
been visited.
The only caller of clear_delta_base_cache() is fast-import,
which wants to clear the cache because it is discarding the
packed_git struct for its temporary pack. So by failing to
remove all of the entries, we still have references to the
freed packed_git.
To make things even more confusing, this doesn't seem to
trigger with the test suite, because it depends on
complexities like the size of the hash table, which entries
got cleared, whether we try to access them before they're
evicted from the cache, etc.
So I've been able to identify the problem with large
imports like freebsd's svn import, or a fast-export of
linux.git. But nothing that would be reasonable to run as
part of the normal test suite.
We can fix this easily by iterating over the lru linked list
instead of the hashmap. They both contain the same entries,
and we can use the "safe" variant of the list iterator,
which exists for exactly this case.
Let's also add a warning to the hashmap API documentation to
reduce the chances of getting bit by this again.

Now that all callers of the old 'get_pathspec' interface have been
migrated to use the new pathspec struct interface it can be removed
from the codebase.
Since there are no more users of the '_raw' field in the pathspec struct
it can also be removed. This patch also removes the old functionality
of modifying the const char **argv array that was passed into
parse_pathspec. Instead the constructed 'match' string (which is a
pathspec element with the prefix prepended) is only stored in its
corresponding pathspec_item entry.

The existing "git fetch --depth=<n>" option was hard to use
correctly when making the history of an existing shallow clone
deeper. A new option, "--deepen=<n>", has been added to make this
easier to use. "git clone" also learned "--shallow-since=<date>"
and "--shallow-exclude=<tag>" options to make it easier to specify
"I am interested only in the recent N months worth of history" and
"Give me only the history since that version".

The callbacks for iterating a sha1_array must have a void
return. This is unlike our usual for_each semantics, where
a callback may interrupt iteration and have its value
propagated. Let's switch it to the usual form, which will
enable its use in more places (e.g., where we are replacing
an existing iteration with a different data structure).

The API documentation for hashmap was unclear if hashmap_entry
can be safely discarded without any other consideration. State
that it is safe to do so.

embedded in the caller's structure is to be treated as opaque, which
left the reader wondering if it can safely be discarded when it no

descriptor, merely free(3)ing the containing structure (when the
caller's structure is on the heap) or letting it go out of scope
(when it is on the stack) would end up leaking the external
resource.
Document that there is no need for hashmap_entry_clear() that
corresponds to hashmap_entry_init() to give the API users a little
bit of peace of mind.

In the transport protocol we use NAK to signal the non existence of a
common base, so fix the documentation. This helps readers of the document,
as they don't have to wonder about the difference between NAK and NACK.
As NACK is used in git archive and upload-archive, this is easy to get
wrong.

The pre/post receive hook may be interested in more information from the
user. This information can be transmitted when both client and server
support the "push-options" capability, which when used is a phase directly
after update commands ended by a flush pkt.
Similar to the atomic option, the server capability can be disabled via
the `receive.advertisePushOptions` config variable. While documenting
this, fix a nit in the `receive.advertiseAtomic` wording.

In git-fetch, --depth argument is always relative with the latest
remote refs. This makes it a bit difficult to cover this use case,
where the user wants to make the shallow history, say 3 levels
deeper. It would work if remote refs have not moved yet, but nobody
can guarantee that, especially when that use case is performed a
couple months after the last clone or "git fetch --depth". Also,
modifying shallow boundary using --depth does not work well with
clones created by --since or --not.
This patch fixes that. A new argument --deepen=<N> will add <N> more (*)
parent commits to the current history regardless of where remote refs
are.
Have/Want negotiation is still respected. So if remote refs move, the
server will send two chunks: one between "have" and "want" and another
to extend shallow history. In theory, the client could send no "want"s
in order to get the second chunk only. But the protocol does not allow
that. Either you send no want lines, which means ls-remote; or you
have to send at least one want line that carries deep-relative to the
server..
The main work was done by Dongcan Jiang. I fixed it up here and there.
And of course all the bugs belong to me.
(*) We could even support --deepen=<N> where <N> is negative. In that
case we can cut some history from the shallow clone. This operation
(and --depth=<shorter depth>) does not require interaction with remote
side (and more complicated to implement as a result).

This should allow the user to say "create a shallow clone of this branch
after version <some-tag>".
Short refs are accepted and expanded at the server side with expand_ref()
because we cannot expand (unknown) refs from the client side.
Like deepen-since, deepen-not cannot be used with deepen. But deepen-not
can be mixed with deepen-since. The result is exactly how you do the
command "git rev-list --since=... --not ref".

This should allow the user to say "create a shallow clone containing the
work from last year" (once the client side is fixed up, of course).
In theory deepen-since and deepen (aka --depth) can be used together to
draw the shallow boundary (whether it's intersection or union is up to
discussion, but if rev-list is used, it's likely intersection). However,
because deepen goes with a custom commit walker, we can't mix the two
yet.

OPT_COUNTUP() merely increments the counter upon --option, and resets it
to 0 upon --no-option, which means that there is no "unspecified" value
with which a client can initialize the counter to determine whether or
not --[no]-option was seen at all.
Make OPT_COUNTUP() treat any negative number as an "unspecified" value
to address this shortcoming. In particular, if a client initializes the
counter to -1, then if it is still -1 after parse_options(), then
neither --option nor --no-option was seen; if it is 0, then --no-option
was seen last, and if it is 1 or greater, than --option was seen last.
This change does not affect the behavior of existing clients because
they all use the initial value of 0 (or more).
Note that builtin/clean.c initializes the variable used with
OPT__FORCE (which uses OPT_COUNTUP()) to a negative value, but it is set
to either 0 or 1 by reading the configuration before the code calls
parse_options(), i.e. as far as parse_options() is concerned, the
initial value of the variable is not negative.
To test this behavior, in test-parse-options.c, "verbose" is set to
"unspecified" while quiet is set to 0 which will test the new behavior
with all sets of values.

The usual pattern for an argv array is to initialize it,
push in some strings, and then clear it when done. Very
occasionally, though, we must do other exotic things with
the memory, like freeing the list but keeping the strings.
Let's provide a detach function so that callers can make use

CURLAUTH_ANY does not work with proxies which answer unauthenticated requests
with a 307 redirect to an error page instead of a 407 listing supported
authentication methods. Therefore, allow the authentication method to be set
using the environment variable GIT_HTTP_PROXY_AUTHMETHOD or configuration
variables http.proxyAuthmethod and remote.<name>.proxyAuthmethod (in analogy
to http.proxy and remote.<name>.proxy).
The following values are supported:
* anyauth (default)
* basic
* digest
* negotiate
* ntlm

Again, we do not usually process release notes with AsciiDoc, but it
is better to be consistent.
This incidentally reveals breakages left by an ancient 5e00439f
(Documentation: build html for all files in technical and howto,
2012-10-23). The index-format documentation was originally written
to be read as straight text without formatting and when the commit
forced everything in Documentation/ to go through AsciiDoc, it did
not do any adjustment--hence the double-dashes will be seen in the
resulting text that is rendered as preformatted fixed-width without
converted into em-dashes.

The spec is very inconsistent about which PKT-LINE() parts
of the grammar include a LF. On top of that, the code is not
consistent, either (e.g., send-pack does not put newlines
into the ref-update commands it sends).
Let's make explicit the long-standing expectation that we
generally expect pkt-lines to end in a newline, but that
receivers should be lenient. This makes the spec consistent,
and matches what git already does (though it does not always
fulfill the SHOULD).
We do make an exception for the push-cert, where the
receiving code is currently a bit pickier. This is a
reasonable way to be, as the data needs to be byte-for-byte
compatible with what was signed. We _could_ make up some
rules about signing a canonicalized version including
newlines, but that would require a code change, and is out
of scope for this patch.

In a superproject some commands need to interact with submodules. They
need to query values from the .gitmodules file either from the worktree
of from certain revisions. At the moment this is quite hard since a
caller would need to read the .gitmodules file from the history and then
parse the values. We want to provide an API for this so we have one
place to get values from .gitmodules from any revision (including the
worktree).
The API is realized as a cache which allows us to lazily read
.gitmodules configurations by commit into a runtime cache which can then
be used to easily lookup values from it. Currently only the values for
path or name are stored but it can be extended for any value needed.
It is expected that .gitmodules files do not change often between
commits. Thats why we lookup the .gitmodules sha1 from a commit and then
either lookup an already parsed configuration or parse and cache an
unknown one for each sha1. The cache is lazily build on demand for each
requested commit.
This cache can be used for all purposes which need knowledge about
submodule configurations. Example use cases are:
* Recursive submodule checkout needs to lookup a submodule name from
its path when a submodule first appears. This needs be done before
this configuration exists in the worktree.
* The implementation of submodule support for 'git archive' needs to
lookup the submodule name to generate the archive when given a
revision that is not checked out.
* 'git fetch' when given the --recurse-submodules=on-demand option (or
configuration) needs to lookup submodule names by path from the
database rather than reading from the worktree. For new submodule it
needs to lookup the name from its path to allow cloning new
submodules into the .git folder so they can be checked out without
any network interaction when the user does a checkout of that
revision.

Move machinery to parse human-readable scaled numbers like 1k, 4M,
and 2G as an option parameter's value from pack-objects to
parse-options API, to make it available to other codepaths.

If this extension is used in a repository, then no
operations should run which may drop objects from the object
storage. This can be useful if you are sharing that storage
with other repositories whose refs you cannot see.
For instance, if you do:
$ git clone -s parent child
$ git -C parent config extensions.preciousObjects true
$ git -C parent config core.repositoryformatversion 1
you now have additional safety when running git in the
parent repository. Prunes and repacks will bail with an
error, and `git gc` will skip those operations (it will
continue to pack refs and do other non-object operations).
Older versions of git, when run in the repository, will
fail on every operation.
Note that we do not set the preciousObjects extension by
default when doing a "clone -s", as doing so breaks
backwards compatibility. It is a decision the user should
make explicitly.

Normally we try to avoid bumps of the whole-repository
core.repositoryformatversion field. However, it is
unavoidable if we want to safely change certain aspects of
git in a backwards-incompatible way (e.g., modifying the set
of ref tips that we must traverse to generate a list of
unreachable, safe-to-prune objects).
If we were to bump the repository version for every such
change, then any implementation understanding version `X`
would also have to understand `X-1`, `X-2`, and so forth,
even though the incompatibilities may be in orthogonal parts
of the system, and there is otherwise no reason we cannot
implement one without the other (or more importantly, that
the user cannot choose to use one feature without the other,
weighing the tradeoff in compatibility only for that
particular feature).
This patch documents the existing repositoryformatversion
strategy and introduces a new format, "1", which lets a
repository specify that it must run with an arbitrary set of
extensions. This can be used, for example:
- to inform git that the objects should not be pruned based
only on the reachability of the ref tips (e.g, because it
has "clone --shared" children)
- that the refs are stored in a format besides the usual
"refs" and "packed-refs" directories
Because we bump to format "1", and because format "1"
requires that a running git knows about any extensions
mentioned, we know that older versions of the code will not
do something dangerous when confronted with these new
formats.
For example, if the user chooses to use database storage for
refs, they may set the "extensions.refbackend" config to
"db". Older versions of git will not understand format "1"
and bail. Versions of git which understand "1" but do not
know about "refbackend", or which know about "refbackend"
but not about the "db" backend, will refuse to run. This is
annoying, of course, but much better than the alternative of
claiming that there are no refs in the repository, or
writing to a location that other implementations will not
read.
Note that we are only defining the rules for format 1 here.
We do not ever write format 1 ourselves; it is a tool that
is meant to be used by users and future extensions to
provide safety with older implementations.

The unsigned long option parsing (including 'k'/'m'/'g' suffix
parsing) is more widely applicable. Add support for OPT_MAGNITUDE
to parse-options.h and change pack-objects.c use this support.
The error behavior on parse errors follows that of OPT_INTEGER. The
name of the option that failed to parse is reported with a brief
message describing the expect format for the option argument and
then the full usage message for the command invoked.
This differs from the previous behavior for OPT_ULONG used in
pack-objects for --max-pack-size and --window-memory which used to
display the value supplied in the error message and did not display
the full usage message.

When we have a null-terminated array, it would be useful to convert it
or append it to an argv_array for further manipulation.
Implement argv_array_pushv() which will push a null-terminated array of
strings on to an argv_array.
